OPENING PRAYER

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, we can be so full of fear at times - afraid of the unknown; afraid of what is beyond our control; afraid of what is strange to us. And we know that fear stops us in our tracks, hinders our action, and gives excuse for not doing what you call us to do and what you empower us to do. So we pray that you will give us courage, O God. Give us strong hearts and open hands that we may set aside our fear and walk confidently into this world you have made. In Jesus’ name we pray. (Silence for personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

RESPONSIVE SONG NO. 472 “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

SERMON “The Followers of Christ: Saints” Rev. Emily Riley Campbell

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Excerpts from A Brief Statement of Faith, PC(USA)

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries

Page 3: May 28, 2017 Memorial Weekend Summer Services Beginfpcp.net/wp-content/uploads/05.28.2017.pdf · 5/28/2017  · youth in foster care, and we celebrate all those who make a meaningful

in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Do you have a talent for tech? An ear for sound? A love of audio? A desire to serve? We are looking for some new people to join the Sound System Team! The commitment is for one Sunday each month in the Sanctuary, with occasional sub or special service opportunities. Local Mission Dear Friends of Kids in Foster Care,

May is National Foster Care Month, a month set aside to acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors, policymakers, child welfare professionals, and other members of the community who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections. During National Foster Care Month, we renew our commitment to ensure a bright future for the more than 400,000 children and youth in foster care, and we celebrate all those who make a meaningful difference in their lives. Won't you join us in connecting with others to support our 12,000 and more Michigan children and youth in the foster care system?

“We are so grateful for all of our Kids Hope Mentors; they are doing amazing things in the lives of our students.”

Catherine Williams, Principal, Bird Elementary

One way our church provides direct help to our community is through Kids Hope USA at Bird Elementary and

West Middle School. Local Mission and Presbyterian Women support our church’s Kids Hope partnership. Members of our church family serve as mentors to high-risk students at these two schools, faithfully showing

up each week of the school year to provide encouragement, love and support.

Bird Elementary proudly posted a certificate near their office, recognizing their partnership with our church.

On June 2, our elementary school program will wrap up their second year at Bird. We celebrate 19 mentor-student relationships formed over this school year: 19 young lives shown the love of

Christ through the love of an FPCP member/mentor. Each relationship is also supported behind the scenes by a prayer partner.

Elementary program Mentors for 2016-2017 Connie Adams, Linda Baric, Jim Bernard, Kris Black, Tom Brady, Denny Devine, Kiki Farrow, Bev Girard, Evan Johnson, Susan Johnson, Lily Jones, Craig Lee, Rob Leist, Amy Marmaduke, Grant Marmaduke, Kari Rhea, Janet Sibbold, Jane Weaver, Bob White.

Prayer Support: Darlene Maginley, Prayer Partner Coordinator Prayer Partners: Sarah Anthony, Nancy Brady, Patti Devine, Tina Francis, Susan Johnson, Sue Kage, Cecelia Lark, Susan Lee, Judy Morgan, Joann Oldham, Karen Thiele, Marie McCubbrey, Tom Weaver, Tina Fitzgerald, Tami Rager, Sue Stanley, Beth Walsh, Nancy White.

If you would like more information about this program, (we will need more mentors next school year!) please contact Susan Johnson, Kids Hope Director, Bird Elementary or 734.751.9334 or Marie McCubbrey, Kids Hope Director, West Middle School.

Local Mission

National/International Mission

Help Feed Needy Children with “Cereal for Summer”

Kids who rely on free or reduced-priced breakfast at school often go without enough to eat during the summer months. Here is your chance to help food insecure families with a simple donation of a box of

cereal or other non-perishable breakfast items. The Presbytery of Detroit’s Hunger Ministries Program hopes to distribute 1,000 boxes of cereal this summer.

Let’s do our part to help! Donations may be placed in the marked bin in the collection area from now until June 11.

Thank you!!

“For I was hungry and you gave me food…” Matthew 25:35

After many months of praying for a pastor, our partners at Mtenthera CCAP welcomed Rev. Mark Kaligande as their new pastor on May 21st. There was a standing room only crowd of church members, Synod leadership, government officials and local community leaders on hand to welcome Rev. Kaligande. Anji Martin of our church was present for the service. She was able to convey a letter of greeting from Rev. Campbell and also got to enjoy the five hour service of installation! There was lots of food and fellowship after the service to celebrate this joyous occasion. Please keep Rev. Kaligande in your prayers for a fruitful term of service at Mtenthera.

THRIFT SHOP NEWS Our tool sale was even better than expected! We DOUBLED the amount of money we took in this year, all thanks to you for donating so many tools, big and small. With praise and thanksgiving we received $1900.00 for all that we sold in one day! And there is still more to purchase, so if you didn't come on Saturday, there is still time to shop! We owe a BIG thank you to Ray Stella, Bob Markley, Fred Bertsch, Mike Mincher and Rick Shingledecker who assisted John Roose in making our SECOND ANNUAL TOOL SALE the best yet!
