Reviewed by County Attorney’s Office: _______________________________ County Board Meeting – June 14, 2003 TO: The County Board of Arlington County, Virginia FROM: Ron Carlee, County Manager SUBJECT: Authorization to Accept a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service and a License from the Department of the Army for the Construction of a Sidewalk and Retaining Wall as part of a Department of Public Works Improvement Project (“Project”) located at North Meade Street and North Marshall Drive. RECOMMENDATION : Adopt the Motion attached to this Report, dated May 27, 2003, designated as Exhibit 1, approving the attached Special Use Permit from the National Park Service, designated as Exhibit 3, and a License from the Department of the Army, designated as Exhibit 4, and authorizing execution of both. ISSUE: None. SUMMARY: Approval of a Special Use Permit and License with the National Park Service and the Department of the Army, respectively, to construct approximately 75 feet of sidewalk and retaining wall on the west side of North Meade Street at the intersection of North Meade Street and North Marshall Drive. DISCUSSION : The Special Use Permit and License will allow for the construction of a sidewalk and retaining wall near the entrance to Fort Myer. The total length of the proposed sidewalk and retaining wall is approximately 75 feet. The construction of the retaining wall and sidewalk will allow pedestrians to walk safely from Rosslyn to the entrance of Fort Myer, along the west side of North Meade Street. The License and Special Use Permit must be accepted by, or on behalf of, the County Board in order to be valid. In order to expedite the acceptance process and allow construction to move forward, the County Board’s authorization for the Director of the Department of Public Works to execute the Special Use Permit and License, as shown on Exhibits 3 and 4, is being requested for this project.
