Pastor’s Corner
Beloved, It is such a joy and a privilege to be your pas-
tor. I don’t know if I can express how proud I am to
be connected with you at Guardian Angels and Our
Lady of Hope. Last weekend was our first public
mass in weeks. How wonderful to see so many in the
pews. As time goes on and restrictions and cautions
ease, more parishioners will be able to return.
As we move beyond the strict shelter-in-place
and begin to move about a bit, we will have some
catching up to do. First, of course, is visiting person
to person with one another! Baptisms, First Com-
munions, and Weddings that had been scheduled for
the Spring have been moved into the Summer. And
we face other challenges. For, though you have been
very faithful in your giving to the Church during this
difficult season, the parish finances have still fallen a
little behind, and our biggest fundraiser, the Westport
Community Festival had to be cancelled.
There are some challenges ahead of us to be
sure, but our community has faced challenges before
and has never shrunk from them.
Summer is typically a time in parish life
when things slow down. People go on vacation. At-
tendance is low. Not many meetings and events hap-
pen. Please pray with me that this summer will be
different. We need to come out of lock down with
determination and a burning desire to build the King-
dom of God in Westport. It is a time to be strong. A
time to be courageous.
Thank you for being the faith-filled people of
God that you are.

Thanks to Brigid Duffy. You may or may not be aware that Brigid moved to Dallas. Regardless, she sent hand sanitizer, disposable gloves and disposable masks for the Guardian Angels community. Our talented quilters, Mary Stanton, Mary O’Shea and Mary Montgomery have continued to make cloth masks for our Guardian Angels community, our food pantry patrons and many more individuals. Your kindness, sensitivity and selfless actions are incredi-bly appreciated. We love you. John Kenny Rodricks has been instrumental in the effort to reopen Guardian Angels Parish. He has pur-chased materials, assisted with streaming masses and really shown himself to be a leader. Linda Parkinson is another parishioner who has been selfless in cleaning the church, the Sacristy and the parish office. We thank her for her time and dedica-tion. Thanks so much to Mark Masciovecchio, Darren Walrod and Patrick Riha for unloading the Harvest-er's truck. This is no easy feat and it helps many!

Reprint of Father Ed’s All-Parish Letter of May 13 Regarding New Attendance Guidelines
Beloved,
I so look forward to seeing you back at Mass. We have been unable to meet for Mass for eight weeks. It feels like much longer, to be sure. Thanks to some very hard working and tech-savvy volunteers, we are grateful to have been able to live stream Mass to all of you. But only these few volunteers have been able to receive our beloved Eucharist on their committed Sunday. At last, begin-ning this weekend, May 16 and 17, we will resume public masses. To say we are thankful is a gross understatement. However, attendance is limited to 10% of occupancy. For Guardian Angels, only 42 people can attend each Mass. Fortu-nately, we can still offer livestream of the 11 am Mass for those who cannot or should not join in public worship. I know everyone has a lot of questions, so I will try to answer them here. Mass Schedule Saturday Sunday
4pm 8am, 9:30 am (Divine Worship Missal), 11 am The pews and other areas will be disinfected between masses. Note new time for the Divine Worship Missal Mass to allow for that. Directions for Attending Mass
• National health directives forbid anyone who is ill or symptomatic (fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc.) from attending any public gathering, including Mass.
• Acting with public health guidelines, the diocese has recommended that those who are considered “at risk” (over age 60, under 5, immune compromised for any number of reasons, diabetic, asthmatic, or history of other respiratory illness such as bronchitis or pneumonia) should not attend public gatherings, including Mass. Please take this recommendation seriously.
• Bishop Johnston has dispensed all from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass.
• If you are ill, vulnerable to COVID-19, or are concerned about being in public, please do not come to Mass. We encourage you to participate in Mass via the live stream offered of the 11 am Mass.
• Everyone is directed to observe social/physical distancing – staying at least six feet from people not in your household, includ-ing in the communion line. While receiving Holy Communion from the Priest or Communion Minister that social distance is not enforced because, obviously, the people and minister cannot be six feet apart. In other words, only people who live together in one house should be together in a pew, but each entire ‘household’ is to remain six feet away from other households and indi-viduals. To ensure this, some pews have been marked off. Please sit in an open pew.
• Hand sanitizer should be used when entering and leaving the church.
• Everyone should enter the church either from the west facing door on the north side of the church (by the main parking lot), or the east facing main doors at the front of the church. Please allow an assistant to open the doors for you. This helps to prevent disease transference.
• Masks should be worn when entering or leaving the church or in line for communion. They may be removed when sitting in the pew due to social distance adherence. The priest will not wear a mask while saying Mass. However, he will consume all ex-posed elements himself and only distribute the host from a covered ciborium. He will wear a full face shield when distributing communion. The Precious Blood will not be offered to the faithful at this time.
• When you come forward to receive Holy Communion, please stay six feet away from the person in front of you. When you ap-proach the priest or minister of Holy Communion, please stretch your arm out to present one hand, open and as flat as possible, resting on the palm of the other. After receiving the Most Precious Body, please step aside to remove your mask and then con-sume the Precious Host. Next, immediately replace your mask. These instructions are in keeping with the United States Catholic Bishops’ directives for reception of Holy Communion in the hand. There will be no communion distributed on the tongue.
• Unfortunately, singing by the parishioners is discouraged during Mass at this time. Singing extends the social distance require-ment from six feet to 20 feet. Therefore, only the cantor will sing during Mass. The faithful are encouraged to recite the respons-es either mentally or spoken softly, unless the mask is worn at that time.
Volunteers Needed This time of transition involves the need for many volunteers.
• At the least, we need two healthy people under the age of 60 at each Mass to assist by performing the following functions: Hold the door open for those coming to and leaving Mass so they don’t have to touch door handles. Assist the faithful in finding safe seats that maintain proper social distance. Assist the faithful in maintaining a safe distance in the communion line. Disinfect the pews, bathrooms, hallways, etc. following each Mass.
We must soldier through this together. We are not out of the woods yet, and probably won’t be for quite some time. I real-ize that many should not or cannot attend. The most important thing is to stay healthy. For those who cannot attend, we will continue to live stream the 11 am Mass and offer the Act of Spiritual Communion. I pray for every parishioner daily.
Many of you are out of work during this time. Please contact the church office if you are in need of financial assistance or if there is anything else you need from the church or me, personally. I am here to serve you.
Yours in Christ, Father Ed

For her entire life, Mother Teresa of Calcutta looked to Our Lady for guidance, strength, and hope. Here are some of her thoughts and prayers of Mary, in her own words. All Things are Possible “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” When Mary heard this greeting of the angel, she was troubled and wondered what it might mean. Even Mary, sinless and perfect, was troubled and wondered. She was not a statue without human feelings but was like you and me in many ways. And then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, for nothing is impossible with God. You shall bear a son and name him Jesus.” And Mary said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word.” A Call and a Mission Mary had a call and a mission, and she went through a process of discernment to accept them. She responded to the angel in obedience and rejoiced, saying “yes.” All mankind rejoices with her in her “yes.” She had been chosen as the Queen of Heaven and Earth, yet she did not go in search of glory or even to tell Joseph. The first thing she did as the Mother of God was to go in haste to serve her cousin Elizabeth. Total Surrender Our lives are founded on Jesus and Mary and so we ask ourselves: What was their total surrender? Scripture tells us that Jesus, though he was God, “did not count equality with God something to be grasped at. Rather, he emptied himself and took the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men.” This was complete surrender, but it can be difficult to understand Jesus because he is God. Mary, however, is completely one of us. She loved, she surrendered, she emptied herself. For the Love of Souls Mary, Mother of Jesus, and my Mother, you were the first one to hear Jesus cry, “I Thirst.” You know how real, how deep is his longing for me and for the poor. I am yours. Mother Mary, teach me, bring me face to face with the love in the heart of Jesus crucified. With your help, I will listen to Jesus’s thirst and it will be for me a Word of life. Standing near you, I will give him my love, and I will give him the chance to love me, and so be the cause of your joy and so to satiate Jesus’s thirst for love of souls. Amen.
