Field Trip to Africa? The end of the school year always includes
field trips, and what better place for our young scholars than a
trip to the Childrens Museum of Northeast Montana? Irle Schools
kindergarten students had the place to themselves on Tuesday
afternoon with one of the delightful attractions being the World
Wildlife Experience. This exhibit is divided into eight different
regions of the world and contains over 100 animal species including
fish, birds and even reptiles from around the globe. Pictured with
part
of the African Safari display including a white lion are (left
to right) Jensina Tweten, Paityn Britzman, Aubrey Farrar, Karsyn
Page, Alex Earll, Kinley Strommen, Chezney Olson and Katelynn
Watkins. The Childrens Museum has been a hot spot for school field
trips the past few weeks with bus loads of children from
neighboring towns. Established in 2005, the Childrens Museum of
Northeast Montana is a non-profit 501c3 organization with a mission
to offer hands-on learning in a fun way.

New name, new mascot new colors So long, Penguins, Panthers and
Raiders. How sad is that? But being optimistic, the basketball
cooperative agreement between District 3C high schools in Saco,
Whitewater and Hinsdale has decided on he name North Country
Mavericks. What hasnt been decided is the co-op colors. Its down to
navy blue and lime green or black and gold. Thanks for the
memories, Raiders Panthers and Penguins. It is sad, but thats the
sign of the times for many of our small communities. Now its time
to say, Go Mavericks!

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is developing a statewide
management plan for mountain lions and is seeking the publics help
identifying issues of concern. FWPs last statewide look at mountain
lion management was completed about 20 years ago. The updated plan
will summarize the latest science and monitoring data, describe
conservation and harvest strategies, and compile policies in a
single document. Management plans provide guidance to wildlife
biologists and Fish and Wildlife Commissioners and they provide the
public information on how and why specific decisions are made, said
Jay Kolbe, FWPs wildlife biologist tasked with updating Montanas
mountain lion management plan. Anyone with an interest in how
Montana manages mountain lions can provide information and comment
online by visiting FWPs website at fwp.mt.gov; then click Mountain
Lion Plan. The deadline to comment is July 22 at 5 p.m. Mountain
lion research and population monitoring techniques have come a long
way over the past 20 years, Kolbe said. Today were better equipped
to build a plan that will help conserve healthy lion populations
while ensuring continued public hunting opportunities for both
lions and their prey. For more information, call Kolbe at
406-499-2356 or contact him via e-mail at [email protected]. FWP
expects to have a draft mountain lion management plan ready for
public review by the end of the year.

AIS checks taking place at Fort Peck Reservoir and surrounding
waters Memorial Day weekend kicks off the 2015 boating season on
area waters. As a result, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will
begin conducting Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) checks on Fort Peck
Reservoir and other waters across Northeastern Montana. Aquatic
Invasive Species (AIS), such as Eurasian watermilfoil, have become
established throughout Fort Peck Reservoir and the Dredge Cuts
below Fort Peck Dam. Eurasian watermilfoil can, in nutrient-rich
lakes, develop thick underwater mats of vegetation at the waters
surface. In shallow areas, the plant can interfere with water
activities such as boating, fishing and swimming. Now that this
invasive plant is established in some areas, the intent is to stop
the spread of this or other invasive species in waters across the
region. The recreating public is asked to help prevent the movement
of AIS by ensuring that all watercraft and trailers are clean and
dry when they leave the reservoir and other areas. Beginning on
Saturday, May 23, and ending Labor Day weekend, there will be an
AIS check station at the information booth on Highway 24 near Fort
Peck, located at the turnoff to the Fort Peck Marina and cabin
areas. All watercraft, including boats, canoes, kayaks, and jet
skis, must stop at the inspection station as directed by the
designated signs. One additional inspection station will be located
in Culbertson, at the Department of Transportation weigh station.
In addition and new for 2015 will be random inspections of
watercraft at access points on Fort Peck Reservoir, the Missouri
River, Tiber Reservoir, Fresno Reservoir, Nelson Reservoir,
Medicine Lake, Box Elder Reservoir, and other areas in Northeastern
Montana. This effort will assist boaters with self inspection
procedures and will educate them about the importance of cleaning
watercraft, checking live wells, and to ensure that any watercraft
moving to another body of water is completely dry and clean of AIS.
Inspections on watercraft include hulls, engine and motor areas,
live wells, and any other places where AIS might exist. Inspections
on trailers include rollers, bunks, lights, and other areas as
necessary. Remember: INSPECT. CLEAN. DRY.
