As an audience member, you've felt the very special energy that can be generated between musicians and their audience during a live concert. The musicians want to be able to do a great job for you, but they can be as easily distracted by what they see and hear in the audience as can fellow audience members. Good concert etiquette both helps the audience have a wonderful musical experience and helps the musicians per-form to the best of their ability. If you're new to the symphony, the guidelines below are intended to enhance your musical experience.

Concert Etiquette - Enhancing the Musical Experience

Before the concert starts

• Turn off your cell phone or pager or put it on vibrate. Turn off your cell phone alarm if you have one set. Hooray for technology, but some of it just doesn't enhance the musical experience!

During the concert • Enter and exit your seat only between selections. If possible, wait until the audience is applauding before moving. • Don’t talk or whisper during a performance. Concert halls have excellent acoustics, and even a whisper can be heard a row or two away.

To applaud or not to applaud ... that is the question ... • Always clap for the soloists and the concertmaster. • It is customary to applaud when the conductor first comes out on the stage. He or she will bow to acknowledge your applause and the con-cert will begin. • Some classical works are broken down into parts called "movements." In between these movements the music will stop for a few seconds. Wait until the conductor has dropped his hands and has turned around to acknowledge the audience before applauding. • Whistling, yelling, or otherwise congratulating the performers is gener-ally not appropriate for classical music concerts. If you think the perfor-mance deserving, standing ovations are greatly appreciated.

ABOUT THE ORCHESTRAS

HS CONCERT STRINGS (CS) – Comprised of freshman-senior students, this is BBHHS’s primary orchestral performing ensemble. Concert Strings focuses heavily on the development of tech-nique, tone, theory, and musicianship. Students will have the opportunity to participate in all con-certs, contests, and workshops. Every Member of this ensemble is encouraged participate in OMEA Solo and Ensemble. The level of music ranges from ME, M, and MA or Music Level Grades 2.5 - 4.

HS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (CH) – (AUDITIONED ENSEMBLE) Comprised of students chosen based on previous excellence in orchestra. This group is expected to dedicate a portion of their home time to practice and proficiency of the music that has been assigned. Students must audi-tion with the directors in order to be accepted into the program and are strongly encouraged to study with a private teacher as well. Chamber orchestra has the possibility of playing special events and will be required to attend OMEA Solo & Ensemble. This ensemble will perform at the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) Large Group Adjudication in February. The level of music ranges from M, MA, to College level and beyond or Music Level Grades 3 - 6.

HS SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA (SO) – Symphonic Orchestra is an extracurricular group of high school students who practice after school during special sessions for several weeks before sched-uled school performances. Members include all Chamber Orchestra students and the top chairs of Concert Strings, along with various wind and percussion students.

MS Intermezzo Orchestra (7th and 8th grade) The purpose of the Intermezzo Orchestra is to develop the fundamentals of group playing: tone quality, tuning, phrasing, musical style, balance of parts, bowing, intonation and listening. The music played and material learned is designed to fulfill the Ohio Department of Education Com-mon Core Standards for music and prepare the student for advanced orchestra. Orchestra is a performing group and will perform in scheduled assemblies, evening concerts, and other out of school festivals and contests. Orchestra members are required to participate in these perfor-mances as part of the course.

MS Sinfonia Orchestra – (7th and 8th grade AUDITIONED ENSEMBLE) Students will perform more challenging repertoire and abide by a higher degree of expectations. Sinfonia Orchestra students will demonstrate - leadership within their sections and in Middle School Orchestra, attentive and respectful behavior during rehearsal, and preparedness prior to and during rehearsal. Students who participate in other after school sports or activities are still encouraged to participate. The Middle School staff is accustomed to sharing students between practices and rehearsals. Sinfonia Orchestra provides an opportunity to perform music more challenging than presented in class and to perform music at an advanced level. The Sinfonia Or-chestra perform at school concerts as well as other special events as time and preparation allows.

Welcome to the PASSPORT Series of Concerts for the 2018-2019 season. Each performance will take our musicians on a musical journey and transport our listeners to other locations throughout the year. All of the program notes have been written by our students in Chamber Orchestra who have elected to take the course for honors credit. Thank you to all of our Family Sponsors, and to our Community Sponsors for the season. With your generous support, you allow the students to maintain the heritage of excellent quality strings education.

Steven Cocchiola, Orchestra Director

ABOUT TONIGHT’S CONCERT

This is the first time in over 15 years that we have had every orchestra in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District together on the stage at the same time for one perfor-mance. In the past, these ‘All City” concerts were a regular tradition, and then with all of the programs growing in size, they stopped happening. Mrs. O’Neal and I planned to host this at the end of the 2017-2018 year and wanted to theme it around music that all ages would love, and we came up with the music from Star Wars. When searching for a date, we began to look at weekends so the evening would not be so long for our younger players and happened to see that May 4th was on a Saturday. May 4th is the unofficial “Star Wars Holiday” since it sounds like May the Force Be With You. Tonight performance is very symbolic as it represents the first time our 4th grade students perform on a stage, and the last time that our 12th grade students will perform on the BBHHS stage.
