    PETE’S PLACE

If you think that you will help with children, youth, or a mis-sion event at First UMC, we’re inviting you to be a part of the MinistrySafe process NOW!!! The MinistrySafe program helps FUMC provide a safe environment for children, youth, and adults. All our volunteers are required to do the Minis-trySafe online training and have a background check. Talk with Adrienne (children), Jason (youth), or Debbie (mission and outreach) about connecting with MinistrySafe. For the training, we’ll need an email address. For the background check, there is an application. Yes, each person needs to do the online training AND have a background check! Thanks for helping us make First UMC a safe place for all God’s chil-dren.

VBS, SULPHUR SPRINGS WORK CAMP, AND SUMMER ACTIVITIES ARE COMING!

So let yourself be bathed in God’s grace by going on a Walk to Em-maus or a Chrysalis flight for youth 15-18.

Things and such, that's what this is about. As you know we have several things going on at our church. We are busy - always looking ahead and planning for growth and new and exciting things. Sometimes it seems like we have too many things going on at one time. So many that we just can't keep up. At least that's how it seems to me. A friend and mentor once told me that if I knew about everything that was going on [in the bank I was involved in at the time] then there weren't enough things happening. I don't know if I buy into that philosophy but that sure seems like the cur-rent situation here and now - lots of things going on.

The one thing that I want to spend some time on in this article is the alternative service I mentioned last Sunday. We will have a planning meeting on Sunday, May 5, at noon (Cinco de Mayo). This is an important meeting if you are interested in a different type of worship service than we cur-rently have. We will order pizza for everyone and there will be child care provided.

This will be a time to offer suggestions and direction for the service. We will begin to formulate the structure of the ser-vice. We'll talk about what, when, where, and how to do what we want to do. I'll have some suggestions and will want to hear everything you have to offer.

If you are interested in something different please put May 5 on your calendar. Bring your thoughts and ideas - I'll bring lunch.

    Grace and Peace Pete

I’m looking forward to the birth of a new granddaughter in August. Her name will be Arden Anne and I’m honored that she has my middle name which means “full of grace”. I’ve found that I’ve already started praying for her and loving her. I hope that she will know and experience how much she is loved. I have no doubt that my love for her will continue to grow just as my love for my other granddaughters, Chloe and Katie continues to bloom. Isn’t it amazing how love grows?

As you know, love that grows doesn’t happen in isolation but in a trusting relationship. This is true even in our spir-itual journey. The journey of love begins when we first ex-perience and realize that we are loved—really loved uncon-ditionally by God. If we don’t know and feel deep inside our being that we are loved, we end up living in fear. The next step is to really surrender to God’s love for us—to give our hearts and our lives over to God. We know in our hearts whether we’ve moved beyond believing to surrendering. We let God’s love and grace dwell in us and work in us. We let God nurture us in love. The final step is what we do with the love we receive. We learn to love. We grow in loving—loving God, loving others, and loving ourselves. We live that loving in the world—even with people whom we do not know or may be hard to love. That’s the journey of loving that Christ came to show us in his teaching, his actions, his death and resurrection, and his self-giving love for us. Where are you in the journey of love? Who is God calling you to love?

Let’s grow in God’s love and loving, Debbie

Having a tough time? Do you know someone who is? If you would like

someone to talk with and to walk with you or with someone else on the difficult

journey, why don’t you give Debbie Riggsby a call at 903-885-2185 to find out how a Stephen Minister might help.

In the parable of the Good Samaritan, a person in need is helped by a traveler. Cancer patients in our community also sometimes find themselves in need and now, they too can get help from travelers through the American Cancer Socie-ty’s Road to Recovery program. Road to Recovery is coming to Hopkins County and volunteers are needed to drive our local patients to treatment. If you would like to make a dif-ference in the life of a cancer patient, then consider becom-ing an American Cancer Society patient driver. Upcoming trainings will show you how to help a patient get on the Road to Recovery.

Please call Courtney Hickey at 903-280-4107 for more information.

VBS, June 24-28 We are heading to Athens where we'll meet Paul and hear about what it was like to tell early Christians about Jesus! We need YOU to make the "trip" with us! Okay, so we don't really go any-where, but we will transform the gym and show the children what it was like for Paul over 2000 years ago. Mark your calen-dars and sign up to help us make it all happen! We need tribe leaders, actors, song leaders, marketplace shopkeepers, and more! Contact Adrienne or Debbie Stinson to sign up or if you have any questions. It's going to be an awesome Athenian ad-venture!

In a recent sermon, entitled "Have You Been Changed", Pete spoke about the transformative power of an encounter with Jesus. The message was very simply this: seek the Savior, meet the Savior, and be changed.

The closing hymn on that Sunday was "I Then Shall Live". It is sung to the hymn tune, Finlandia. Another perhaps more familiar hymn, "Be Still My Soul" is also sung to this hymn tune. The melody is from a symphony by Jean Sibelius. This hymn was chosen because it is a beautiful expression of praise by one whose life has been redeemed…changed. I wished then that the text to the hymn might have been included in the bulletin, but alas, space is at a premium. This is my chance to print them for you.

These are lyrics that bear closer reflection. Gloria Gaither wrote these stirring words:

I then shall live as one who’s been forgiven. I'll walk with joy to know my debts are paid. I know my name is clear before my Father; I am his child and I am not afraid. So greatly pardoned, I'll forgive my brother; the law of love I gladly will obey.

I then shall live as one who’s learned compassion; I've been so loved that I'll risk loving, too. I know how fear builds walls instead of bridges; I dare to see another's point of view. And when relationships demand commitment, then I'll be there to care and follow through.

Your kingdom come around and through and in me. Your power and glory- let them shine through me. Your Hallowed Name, O may I bear with honor, and may your living Kingdom come in me. The Bread of Life, O may I share with honor, and may you feed a hungry world through me.

NORTH EAST TEXAS CHORAL SOCIETY SPRING CONCERT

Please join the men and women of NETCS (95 strong this semester) as we pre-sent "Sing to me of Heaven". This will be the third time in our fifteen years that we have performed our Spring Concert in the sanctuary at FUMC. It is an amazing place to sing! Sacred songs, gospel, spirituals and some wonderful solo work will be on the agenda. Perhaps this concert will be just the thing you need to lift your spirit after a time that seems to be full of news that is heartbreaking. Come let us sing you into a place of joy and peace and high praise! You'll be ever so glad you came!

Nancy, in the church office, has tickets. Choral Society members and all the banks have tickets. Make your plans to be with us. Tim Marks will lead the opening of this concert with this musical question: "Will the circle be unbroken?" Do you know the answer?

Sing To Me of Heaven Friday, May 3 at 7:00 pm, Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 pm Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm First United Methodist Church Sanctuary Seating is limited. Tickets purchased in advance:

    $10 adults/$5 children 12 and under. Tickets

available from NETCS members or the FUMC church office.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME

His ability to live with all these qualities we’ve seen, in such a way that no one quality dominates—as is so often the case in our personalities—eclipsing the richness of the others. To live in such a way that there is always something of an element of surprise, and yet, however he acts turns out to be exactly what was needed in the moment. Oh, his brilliance shines through, but never blinding, never overbearing. He is not glistening white marble. He is the playfulness of creation, scandal and utter goodness, the generosity of the ocean and the ferocity of a thunderstorm; he is cunning as a snake and gentle as a whisper; the gladness of sunshine and the humility of a thirty-mile walk by foot on a dirt road. Reclining at a meal, laughing with friends, and then going to the cross. That is what we mean when we say that Jesus is beautiful.

But most of all, it is the way he loves. In all these stories, every encounter, we have watched love in action. Love as strong as death; a blood, sweat, and tears love, not a get-well card. You learn a great a deal about the true nature of a person in the way they love, why they love, and, in what they love.

But it takes a beautiful heart to recognize the beauty in a scandalous act, and to love it as he does. This is why we say Jesus is beautiful. A Beau-tiful Outlaw.

John Eldredge (an excerpt from Beautiful Outlaw)

    LOVE IN ACTION

SULPHUR SPRING WORK CAMP 2013 Sulphur Springs Work Camp 2013 will be here before we know and it takes a lot of support to make Work Camp a success.

SSWC is a mission opportunity for junior and senior high students to serve in their community. Each year we spend 3 days scraping and painting houses and worshipping together. Workcamp will be held June 9-12 and our goal for this year is to paint 20 houses.

It takes great adult volunteers to make Sulphur Springs Workcamp a huge success. There are many opportunities to serve. Volunteer registration forms are available on the SSWC table in the Educa-tion Building and in the church office.

    Camp Anakainoo— Let’s Start Registering!

The on-line registration for our Jr. & Sr. High Camp Anakainoo is up and running on the church website. I am so excited for this year’s camp (July 9-13), which will be held in a new location at the Shepherd of the Ozarks (soto.com) encampment in Ar-kansas. You can begin to make payments for the camp ($365) now to spread out the payments or you can just pay the full amount up front. We hope to do some fundraisers in the com-ing months to help offset some of the expense for those in need of scholarships. We do need some money to begin to come in for covering our installment payments to the camp, so anything you can do now is appreciated.

So if you are planning to go, please go ahead and register on-line, there is limited space. More information will come on the specifics, but please don’t hesitate to call if you have any ques-tions.

SSWC in Full Swing Sulphur Springs Work Camp is in full swing. Camp will be June 9-12 and we will need lots of volunteers in lots of areas. There is a place for you!

STUDENTS: You need to register and turn in your $50 as soon as possible! Forms are online at the church website and are on the SSWC table outside the Fellowship Hall. The price goes up to $75 after May 5th.

Youth Sunday What an amazing job guys! What a blessing to our church family to have such great and amazing students. A huge thank you must go out to Jeb Brooks, Lane Doughtie, Jenna Davis, Jennifer Philo and Jim Rooks for helping pull it all together. But the hug-est of thanks to our students for their passion and energy in leading our family in a wonderful day of worship. We are really going to miss our Seniors and their leadership.
