Dear Readers,

We have an intense and exciting time ahead of us. In the next few months STEAG Power Minerals will face extensive technical and logistic challenges, because at a total of five locations in Germany newly constructed hard coal-fired power plants will be going on stream – and almost simultaneously. After many years of intense efforts, we were able to secure the by-product utili-zation and exploitation rights for all of these power plants and hence access to modern, long-term raw material sources. How STEAG Power Minerals has positioned itself for the new tasks and how our customers benefit directly from our success, we would like to show you starting from page 6.

Also in Blasting Abrasives and Industrial Minerals business units we have worked hard to position ourselves optimally for future. One and a half years after the merger of ASIKOS with the pa-rent company we were able to secure raw material sources, to optimize sales structures and took additional competences on board. We will inform you about the latest developments star-ting from page 14.

Also during these work-intensive months it is part of STEAG Power Minerals’ self-conception that we allow our team the ne-cessary space for private hobbies and passions and in particu-lar for commitment to voluntary service. Starting on page 20 we will present to you three employees who, after the day’s work, engage themselves in a particular way and commit themselves to helping others free of charge.

As always we wish you, dear readers, lots of enjoyment reading this and look forward to your feedback on this edition of our SEGMENT.

We signed the agreement with Trianel for the takeover of the fly ash from Lünen as early as 2008. Now the agreement is finally being filled with life, since on December 21, 2012 – 3 days before christmas – the Trianel Power Plant had its first coal fire for a more extended period. The requi-rement was naturally to immediate-ly start on transporting byproducts away – and STEAG Power Minerals managed to do that reliably and on schedule in spite of holidays, week-ends and the New Year.

As we initially had no indications of the quality of the ash accumulating, we collected the ash in containers on the holidays and transported it away

on the few work days at the end of the year. In this case Trianel and the municipal enterprises deserve spe-cial praise because they brought containers to the power plant, filled and stored them over christmas, the New Year and also on Sundays.

At the moment possible applications of the fresh ash from the new power plant are being tested – the first im-pression made by the ash is good. containers are no longer needed since in the meantime the internal silo with a capacity of 2,400 metric tons can be used. Moreover, currently the first quantities are being stored in the external silo that has ten times the capacity of the internal silo.

Full Power –Naturally also between Christmas and New Year

Shortly the new STEAG/EVN unit in Duisburg-Walsum will be fired with coal for the first time, and also in the Trianel Power Plant in Lünen the first coal has already been used.

In the Wilhelmshaven power plant of GDF Suez the turbines will run for the first time in the middle of this year. The same goes for the first unit of the Vat-tenfall Group’s Moorburg Power Plant in Hamburg. And the new unit in Karls-ruhe Rhine Harbor Steam Power Plant (Rheinhafen-Dampfkraftwerk - RDK 8), will also go on stream before the end of the year. As the new units are environ-mentally friendly and show high efficien-cies, use of them will probably be given

preference. For us this means that the uti-lization of the residual materials accumu-lating will start and that the new quantities of FGD gypsum, hard coal fly ash and boi-ler ash from wet or from dry ash removal processes are available for marketing.

For many years, STEAG Power Minerals has been intensely occupied with the newly constructed power plants and, as a partner of the power industry, has bid for contracts for residual material utiliza-tion. That included developing convincing marketing concepts and making conside-rable investments in storage capacity – since the purposeful supplying of our con-struction material customers is insepa-rably linked with reliable by-product ma-

by land and water routes. Particularly in the start-up phase for the incoming ash consignments the Nottenkämper clay quarry will be at our disposal.

Unit 10 of the Duisburg-Walsum Power PlantLocated directly by the Rhine and equip-ped with its own harbor, our parent company’s new 750-MW unit is predes-tined for by-product removal via ship. The FGD gypsum is transported away by the gypsum industry almost exclusi-vely by ship. The fly ash will reach our customers by truck and on board con-ventional as well as silo ships.

Wilhelmshaven Power Plant of GDF SuezThe 800-MW unit is approaching com-pletion – STEAG Power Minerals won the competition for the utilization of the residual materials and will in future mar-ket FGD gypsum and fly ash from the power plant. At an early stage we were able to sign large-volume contracts with key clients. Already during the start-up phase, the Holcim cement plant in Lä-gerdorf will recycle the fly ash as a raw material. At that location by-product re-moval from the site will be carried out exclusively by truck.

nagement services for the power plants. The challenges at the individual locations vary widely – we would like to present some of them to you in greater detail:

The Trianel Power Plant in LünenThe new 750-megawatt unit in the eas-tern part of the Ruhr region is embedded in a park of further coal-fired power plants of this region. STEAG Power Minerals is responsible for the marketing of the fly ash – because we were able to decide the invitation for bids in our favor long before putting into operation, marketing has al-ready been in preparation for a long time.

The fly ash is transported to our customers in Germany and neighboring countries

New Power from Fresh Sources The year 2013 faces the STEAG Power Minerals Group with exciting challenges. Putting new, ultramodern hard coal-fired power plants into operation at several locations is imminent – fol-lowing delays in the completion of practically all newly constructed plants, this year the time has now finally come. And naturally this also means that the utilization of the residual materials accu-mulating begins and that valuable new raw material sources open up for STEAG Power Minerals.

the use and exploitation rights for the by-products of this modern plant.

Improved national and international supplyAfter the unit goes on stream we will, as a function of the workload and the coals used, each year have 1.2 million metric tons of fly ash, 200 kilotons of FGD gyp-sum and 100 kilotons of bottom ash to market. We assume that with these newly constructed power plants the supply si-tuation for our customers at home and abroad will be markedly improved. Also with our storage strategy we have posi-tioned ourselves in such a way that the reliable by-product management services for the power plants and the supplying of our customers in line with demand can be exactly balanced.

The marketing strategy comprises as in the past the broadest possible application mix. The predominant share of the later certified fly ash will be used in the areas of concrete, prefabricated parts, concrete goods and mortar. For this the cement industry is an important national and international part-ner for us. There, part of the fly ash is used for the production of M-cements or also as

Moorburg Power Plant of Vattenfall Europe Generation AGNear the metropolis on the River Elbe, Hamburg, 2 units with an output of 827 MW each are being constructed which will go on stream with a staggered time schedule. STEAG Power Minerals there won the bidding for the utilization rights for fly ash and bottom ash. Removal of fly ash will be mainly carried out there with ocean-going ships in future. For interim storage of fly ash, two large silos with a capacity of 30,000 m² each will be availa-ble on the power plant site.

The International Sales department has signed appropriate marketing contracts with major clients; for example in Scandi-navia (in our last edition we already repor-ted on the use of fly ash in national and international construction projects). This location near deep water provides excel-lent logistic conditions for easily supplying to construction projects abroad.

Rhine Harbor Steam Power Plant 8 of EnBWIIn Karlsruhe, with the RDK 8 a new 912 MW power plant is being constructed. Our subsidiary Powerment has secured

a raw meal component. The fly ash in this performs a wide range of functions: it lo-wers the clinker share and hence helps to save cO2. It conserves natural resources and provides decisive technological ad-vantages by counteracting sulfate attack or the problems regarding alkali/silicic acid reactivity.

Particularly in the start-up phase, signifi-cant quantities of fly ash will accumulate which do not yet have any certificate for concrete applications. By means of our broadly positioned range of applications the reliable utilization, in conformity with the law, of the power plant by-products is assured at all times.

Reliable access to raw materials improvement of the supply situation: even if the turnaround in energy policy still en-tails a lot of imponderables it will not be possible without electricity generation from hard coal. We assume that hard coal will still be of great importance for the energy supply for very many years.

Should hard coal-fired power plants have a temporarily lower workload or due to an absence of load requirement be comple-tely disconnected from the grid for a time, we have also prepared ourselves for that situation. In exactly the same way we are preparing ourselves for the cases in which all of the available hard coal-fired units are operated at full load and markedly more fly ash will accumulate than the market can take. A unique selling point of STEAG Power Minerals: we will be able to keep these quantities in the market by interim storage of the fly ash in our hired silo units or, however, moistened in the raw material storage facility of our drying plant.

In the Neubeckum silo facility alone we currently have 9 silos with a total capacity of approx. 40,000 m³ at our disposal. This also provides us with the opportunity of separate storing of various types of care-fully sorted certified ash.

Further large facilities in Gelsenkirchen by the water, in Hanover or in Greater Berlin are available for accommodating excess quantities arising during the win-

ter season, and as an additional dispatch center for meeting the requirements of our customers in the construction season. The storage strategy is rounded off by our dry-ing plant: a large storage area for the moist flue ash and a high-performance dryer that is operated according to requirements are at our disposal for supplying our clients.

Assuring reliable management of by-products 365 days a year and 24 hours a day is our obligation. In order to be able to supply to our customers 365 days a year and round the clock, we have firmly re-solved to expand our storage capacities and to continuously improve the situation at source. With the newly constructed po-wer plants we will again come a lot closer to this goal.

STEAG Power Minerals has won more bids for the utilization of resi-dues than any other competitor – so what gives the company its compe-titive edge?We occupied ourselves at a very early stage with the newly constructed power plants and developed possible scena-rios. While we were doing so it very

quickly became clear that for different quantities and qualities we require com-prehensive and viable solutions. We worked at that and developed an „All-round carefree package“ for the power plants. This utilization portfolio finally gave us the certainty to put together clear bid packages which are econo-mical and reliable for the power plants. That convinced power plant operators in many cases.

How has STEAG Power Minerals prepared for the technical and lo-gistic challenges of the new con-tracts?On this I would like to mention the ex-ample of the Moorburg Power Plant. As a result of the setting up of our Interna-tional Sales department at an early sta-

ge we have been moving considerable quantities of fly ash through Europe for a few years now. The partnerships de-veloped in the process, especially with the cement industry, are used by us in order to reliably meet the bidding requi-rements and take off large quantities of fly ash from these power plant units.

What quite specific customer bene-fits result from the new contracts?Quite clearly more supply reliability. It was a sore point in the last few years that there was temporarily little or even no product available. Every new power plant will yield new quantities and, in conjunction with our storage strategy, this will significantly improve the supply situation. Our customers will apprecia-te that!

The year 2013 began with manifold new challenges for Powerment. Powerment now must handle new utilization con-tracts simultaneously at five power plant locations. These are the EnBW power plant sites Altbach, Heilbronn, Karlsruhe and Walheim as well as the Grosskraftwerk Mannheim power plant.

In detail, Powerment managed to con-tract the following power plant bypro-ducts: In Altbach the fly ash and boiler sand from units 1 and 2 are commercially exploited, in Heilbronn it‘s fly ash, FGD gypsum, boiler sand and in a few weeks also slag-tap granulate. In Karlsruhe we initially take care of the fly ash, boiler sand and dry gypsum from the flue gas desulfurizing unit – either in powder form or as briquettes – from the RDK 7 unit. In a few weeks, a completely new unit, RDK 8, will take up operation – from then on Powerment also will market the fly ash, FGD gypsum and boiler sand from this unit. In addition, in Walheim the slag-tap granulate is marketed.

Due to the variety of the by-products and the sheer size of the power station, the units of GKM Mannheim present a spe-cial challenge. currently in operation in Mannheim are the wet-bottom units 3 and 4 and the dry-bottom boilers 6, 7 and 8. Soon to be completed is the new unit 9, which Powerment also has contracted for the long term and from which it will take the fly ash, boiler sand and granulate.

Long-term marketing conceptLast year was used to acquire customers at the national and international levels – with the experience gained from this, Powerment was able to further refine the existing marketing concept. Along with customer acquisition, the procurement of storage and handling capacities was a special concern. Fortunately, Powerment was able to contract a number of silo units to use them for winter storage of fly ash. An exception is the storage of dry fly ash in push lighters. Three of these lighters,

each with a capacity of 2,500 cubic me-ters, have meanwhile been filled.

Powerment‘s customers use the deli-vered fly ash in very different ways and for fascinating purposes. Hauraton GmbH & co. KG in Rastatt supplied the new Moscow Raceway with innovative products (for example, fiber-reinforced concrete drainage channels). The fiber concrete channels for the only Russian high-speed racetrack with an internati-onal license were manufactured in Ötig-heim, Germany, with fly ash as a raw material component (according to DIN EN 450).

Developing new networksTo improve its own network further, Powerment has joined Industrieverband Steine Erden, the German association of the non-metallic minerals industry. Many of our customers, too, are members of this association. And the company was suc-cessfully audited last year as a specialist in the recovery and recycling of by-products – Powerment is now a certified waste ma-nagement company.

Last but not least, Powerment has star-ted work to connect its material flow

management system MSE Enwis with the new power plants at the IT level – in future the entire process chain starting with the reports on visits to the customer all the way to invoicing for the customer can be mapped in the system. This is an important building block enabling spee-dy and efficient visualization of daily busi-ness – and for the dedicated employees

of Powerment in Ettlingen a great suc-cess since they had a major share in its development and the system‘s processes and functionalities were configured accor-ding to their specifications.

“In 2005 we got the unique opportunity to extend our waste ma-nagement concept that was successfully introduced at STEAG, DSK and Rütgers to the chemical locations of what was then Degussa AG”, remembers Albert Schmitter, Evonik account ma-nager at MINERALplus. The aim was to optimize the established disposal and recycling structures at the individual locations and to improve the economic efficiency of many disposal and recy-cling modes.

And in May 2011, MINERALplus was again faced by a major challenge: Evonik resolved to issue a new call for bids for all of the disposal and recycling services at its German chemical loca-tions. Evonik’s aim was in fact to allow for several disposal and recycling companies at each location, but to restrict the number of partners active at each location.

After passing the prequalification tests in which nearly one hund-red applicants participated, it was necessary to process 13 ex-tensive specifications with more than 3000 individual items and about 150,000 metric tons of waste accumulating each year.

“Our strong points were, on the one hand, the detailed knowledge of the waste flows and their formation processes that we have been able to acquire in the course of the last 5 years, and, on the other hand, our good knowledge of the waste management industry”, says Dieter Binder, who as the head of the Karlsruhe

branch office together with Peter Suck is responsible for the ser-vices to the southern locations. “Our endeavors were rewarded with a basic agreement on extensive disposal and recycling ser-vices at 10 of Evonik’s chemical locations for a further 5 years.”

Today, roughly a year after the conclusion of the framework con-tract, MINERALplus has already taken over more than 100,000 tons of waste at Evonik’s chemical sites and disposed of it cor-rectly. “We have got to know MINERALplus as a competent and reliable partner on all issues relating to waste disposal and re-cycling in the course of many years and are looking forward to further cooperation”, confirms Dr. Herrmann-Josef Korte, head of the Supply and Disposal business line at Evonik and spokesman of the management of Infracor GmbH.

This year the special focus is on Evonik’s largest German loca-tion, the chemical park in Marl, which this year is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Also at the RAG locations by the rivers Rhine and Ruhr, MINERALplus won against the competitors within the scope of a Europe-wide call for bids and will probably carry out the waste management until the shutdown of the plants.

Grown with the challenges

MINERALplus

Since late 2005 MINERALplus has been active as a disposal and recycling partner at Evonik Industries‘ chemical locations throughout Germany. A quite demanding challenge, since as a result of the part-nership with Evonik the field of activity for MINERALplus was widened by about 16 production facilities – from Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt to Rheinfelden on the Swiss border. Yet also in the following years STEAG Power Minerals GmbH’s subsidiary in Gladbeck succeeded in continuing to grow dynamically.

Fuel analysis in the new Fuel LaboratoryOnly recently STEAG Power Minerals took over the accredi-ted coal laboratory of STEAG GmbH. currently it is being ac-credited together with the construction Materials Laboratory as STEAG construction Materials and Fuel Laboratory. Here power generators and other industrial customers can have their solid fuels examined and draw on many additional ana-lytical services. Many years‘ experience enables the labora-tory assistants to gain valuable insights in their daily work about the effect of various fuels on the properties of ash pro-ducts. „Relocation is complete: at the Gladbeck facility we are now optimally linked up with the other laboratories and can enter into an even more intense exchange as a result,“ Marion Neumann, Discipline Leader Fuel Analysis, explains.

Quality assurance for high-gradeconstruction materialsThe tasks arising every day in the accredited construction Materials Laboratory of STEAG Power Minerals are many and varied. Here our products are regularly and carefully in-spected by our experienced staff to ensure they meet the high quality standards of our customers. In addition, new projects continually get under way aimed at developing new products, applications and concrete formulations. „In these projects we often work directly together with our customers so that we can make allowance for their requests from the start,“ Laboratory Manager Fine Eck explains.

The MINERALplus Laboratory for Waste AnalysisOur subsidiary MINERALplus also has a laboratory of its own in Gladbeck, the Laboratory for Waste Analysis, which mainly serves to assure the quality of the construction materials pro-duced in Gladbeck. The laboratory team assists our plants and group companies to assess wastes and raw materials and to assure the quality of the manufactured construction materials. The accredited laboratory also performs chemical analyses which help the construction Materials Laboratory to check the quality of hard coal fly ashes.

Since the laboratories are all aggregated under the same roof ...

The new Fuel Laboratory offers various additional analytical services

Concentrated expertise, compactly bundled

The laboratories of the STEAG Power Minerals Group

... the different lab teams can interlink their projects

At its Gladbeck facility the STEAG Power Minerals Group makes the complete technical know-how relating to all power plant byproducts available to its customers in a compact unit. And with the newly opened Fuel Laboratory the range of services is now even broader – reason enough for us to take you along on a brief tour and to present the three different laboratory units in a little more detail.

The Emscher River, a tributary of the Rhine, flows through the Ruhr region over a distance of 85 kilometers. For more than a hundred years it has served as the central drainage system for one of the most densely populated regions of Germany. This was the only way to properly discharge the wastewaters from the region‘s mines. As the structure of the Ruhr region changes, so too does the Emscher region change: In a major long-term project the entire region between Holzwickede and Dinslaken is getting a new face. In future, wastewater will be drained in covered canals. Up-to-date construction materials are required for them: for instance the concrete with enhan-ced acid resistance developed by Elskes for the pump station in Gelsenkirchen.

The pump station in Gelsenkirchen will be one of three pump stations along the wastewater channel. Sixteen pumps then will convey a maximum of one billion liters of water daily. For the construction of the station Elskes is supplying some 14,000 cubic meters of concrete with enhanced acid resistance. Spe-cifically for this project Elskes developed two concrete formu-lations for different temperature ranges („summer and winter formulations“) employing steament® fly ash. The formulations were tested and approved by Kiwa MPA Bautest GmbH NL Berlin-Brandenburg.

„Our customers have ambitious plans which only can be ac-complished with efficient and reliable partners. Intensive custo-mer-oriented service is the beginning and end for us,“ stresses Guido Hübener, Managing Director at Melius Baustofftechnik GmbH, which is the Heinrich Elskes company‘s construction materials laboratory. STEAG Power Minerals currently is sup-plying 24 Elskes ready-mixed concrete plants in North Rhine-Westphalia with hard coal fly ash, as Type II concrete admixture, from the Walsum, Voerde, Bergkamen, Lünen and Herne power plants. The fly ash supplied complies with DIN EN 450.

Higher demands on concretesToday‘s quality standards for concretes can be met only with the most up-to-date technology and selected raw materials. In the central construction materials laboratory of Melius Baustofftechnik GmbH in Duisburg the concrete technologists work continuously to develop and improve special concretes to meet individual cus-tomer requirements.

The use of hard coal fly ash plays a major role in this work. Fly ash has a favorable and decisive influence on concrete proper-ties such as workability, strength development, hydration heat generation and durability. „For many years the use of fly ash has enabled concrete technologists to optimize concrete from a technical and economic point of view,“ explains Dr. Michael

Lichtmann, Deputy Manager Purchasing and Sales Power Plant Byproducts, STEAG Power Minerals.

And so apart from the concretes with enhanced acid resistance specially developed for the Emscher conversion project, the Elskes technologists have realized many more projects invol-ving special requirements by making use of hard coal fly ash.

Following confirmation by the indepen-dent Hygiene Institute in the Ruhr regi-on of the fact that the blasting abrasives based on slag tap granulate can be safely used if the usual industrial health and sa-fety requirements are observed, STEAG Power Minerals continued to consistently pursue its strategy of raw material secu-ring. As slag tap granulate is now only available to a limited extent in Germany, STEAG Power Minerals has secured ex-tensive quantities of slag tap granulate by means of long-term contracts with power plant operators in order to continuously and reliably supply to its own production plant for blasting abrasives and industrial minerals also in the coming years.

Secure raw material sources Besides the securing of the sources, new storage capacities for slag tap gra-nulate were also consistently built up in order to be able to supply to the blasting abrasives plant also during times of high demand. Moreover, during the last few months new warehouses for finished products were built so as to ensure the optimal supply of blasting abrasives and industrial minerals to the customers at any time.

Sales with additional competence A restructuring of Sales was necessary because within the scope of the merger process personnel changes became ne-cessary. In addition, a reaction to chan-ging markets and the planned expansi-on of business activities to new regions was required.

Marco David, previously a producer of blasting abrasives and most recently active as an agent for STEAG PowerMinerals, was recruited as the new de-puty head of Sales. He has additionally taken over Sales Territory West. Wolfgang David, who brings 40 years’ experience of the blasting abrasives business with him, has been supporting STEAG Pow-er Minerals, moreover, as an advisor for special projects since 2012.

For the planned expansion of our sales activities, STEAG Power Minerals as of February 1, 2013 found a reinforcement in Günter Weisenburger, who likewise has gained extensive expertise over many ye-ars in production, distribution and sales of blasting abrasives. In future, Weisen-burger and his team through their agency Rotosoft will be distributing blasting ab-rasives and industrial minerals in South Germany, Austria and Switzerland for STEAG Power Minerals.

Sales Territory North has been looked af-ter by the long-serving STEAG Power Minerals employee Norbert Lauterbach since early 2012. In order to take ac-count of the personnel changes and the strengthening of sales in the south, the existing sales territories have been slightly adjusted – you can see details from the overview map.

At internal sales service the contacts have remained unchanged. With Markus Kohn, Detlef Lettgen, Manja Reichel, Melanie Rentmeister and Michael Schwarz STEAG Power Minerals has an experienced team all around order handling. Additionally, the internal sales service will be reinforced by Ann-christine Baues and Bastian Brücker who are likewise experienced employees of STEAG Power Minerals.

Proven product portfolio commodities such as garnet sand, metal-lic shot, corundum, glass beads etc., will remain integral parts of the portfolio also in the future. By means of consistent use of the STEAG Power Minerals network and thanks to the expertise of the new ex-perts from the blasting abrasives industry, STEAG Power Minerals was already able to achieve success in the purchasing of various commodities – success that also benefits the customers.

Tests with alternate raw materials Slag tap granulate is an ideal raw material for the production of disposable blasting abrasives, and STEAG Power Minerals has secured this raw material for its pro-duction for the coming years. Neverthe-less, as seen from the present day, the availability of slag tap granulate is finite. Hard coal-fired power plants, in which slag tap granulate is obtained as a by-pro-duct, have a limited remaining life span.

In order to be able to offer our customers an efficient blasting abrasive also in the future, STEAG Power Minerals has alrea-dy for some years now been occupied with the development of blasting abrasi-ves based on alternate raw materials.

For the construction of our ultramodern blasting abrasives production plant in Lünen, at the plant end the use of alter-nate raw materials for the production of blasting abrasives was already allowed for. STEAG Power Minerals has already examined various alternate raw materials on a natural or synthetic basis to ensure their suitability as blasting abrasives.

The results of these investigations make us very optimistic that, for the time after the availability of slag tap granulate, we will be able to offer a high-grade alternative.

The trend for this forum at Essen‘s Grugapark, which draws an international audience, clearly points upward. With 50,000 square meters the exhibition area was 16 percent bigger than the year before. With 610 exhibitors taking part, significantly more industry representatives were on hand, and the number of visitors also increased by seven percent to 22,000. As in the past year, the „energy turnaround“ was the overriding topic at E-world.

STEAG provides technical expertiseThe STEAG stand, occupying the same place it did in 2012, im-pressed visitors and guests with its open and inviting concept. The contacts and discussions at the stand were on a good le-vel and their number matched the previous year. Three STEAG speakers even could be placed in the supporting program:

- Andreas Brandt (Mingas-Power GmbH/Minegas GmbH/ ELE-Scholven-Wind GmbH) presented a report on the topic „Location tailings heap: planning and ope-rating wind power plants on the Scholven heap“.

- Dr. Stephan Nahrath (STEAG New Energies GmbH) reported to the trade audience about the potentials for energy efficiency and renewable energies.

- Udo Wichert (STEAG Fernwärme GmbH) presented a specific energy turnaround project, the linkage of the Lower Rhine and Ruhr district heating networks.

Important contacts deepenedThe STEAG stand was a stopping place on the guided tours of mayors and consulate officials. udo Paschedag, State Secretary in the NRW climate Protection Ministry, had udo Wichert tell him about the progress made extending the district heating networks on Rhine and Ruhr.

The STEAG fair team gave a positive summary after E-world: The hopes placed in the appearance at the show were fully met. The team had the opportunity to present STEAG as company with its complete spectrum of divisions and was able to deepen important customer contacts especially in the fields of renewa-ble energy sources and energy efficiency.

Europe‘s big playersunder one roof

STEAG at E-world

In 2013 all big-name representatives of the European energy industry again came together at the E-world energy & water trade fair in Essen. Having gained good experience with its appearance at last year‘s event, in February STEAG took part in the industry‘s leading trade fair with a stand of its own for the second time.

610 exhibitors, 22,000 visitors: The E-world at Essen‘s Grugapark has established itself as Europe‘s leading trade fair for the energy industry

It‘s now half a century ago that Romuald Kremer set up a short-distance haulage company in the peaceful little Lower Franconian town of Zeil am Main. From easily manageable beginnings, however, the company soon developed into more: over the decades, Kremer Baustoffe und Transporte GmbH managed to transform into an up-to-date service provider for the removal of by-products from hard-coal-fired power plants and a reliable partner for the supply of the construction materials industry. The enterprise, in which STEAG Power Minerals and Schwenk Zement KG each hold stakes of 50 percent, now celebrated its fiftieth birthday. We present a brief portrait of the tradition-steeped com-pany and wish them a happy birthday.

The doers from the Main river region

The Kremer story begins in the year 1963, when Romuald Kremer started up his company in the Hassberge district of rural Lower Franconia. At first, business focused on the transport of powdery materials. Later the company founder expanded the activities to include trading in bulk construction materials. In 1978 the senior director con-verted his firm into a limited liability company (GmbH). In the years that followed the trading and transport activi-ties were steadily expanded, enabling continuous growth of the business.

under the new managing director Bernd czoske the company profile changed starting in 1989: Kremer turned from a haulage company into an up-to-date provider of utilization and recycling services for the power sector and an important partner of the construction materials indus-try. A short time later, first talks were held with STEAG Power Minerals (then still called STEAG Entsorgungs GmbH) concerning the establishment of a joint sales com-pany, and at the beginning of 1992 STEAG Entsorgungs GmbH acquired 50 percent of the company shares. Market leader in three German statesToday Kremer is thae market leader for power plant by-products in Bavaria, Thuringia and Saxony, and the biggest trading partner for such products from the czech Republic. More than 30 carriers transport up to 100 truckloads daily on behalf of Kremer. More than 400 concrete factories trust in the reliability and efficiency of the experienced service provider, who commands large silo storage facilities with a capacity of more than 50,000 tons and consequently can ensure punctual, reliable de-livery at any time.

In 2011 Kremer GmbH was able to generate sales re-venues of more than ten million euros for the first time. And managing director Bernd czoske is confident about the future: „With our compact team of only six employees we have achieved so much already, and I am optimistic that we can continue to move forward also during the years to come!“

certification to ISO 9001

Werner Krohm, Project Manager Engineering at STEAG Power Minerals, has long been racking his brains over new, higher-quality applications for products based on fly ash. His many years of groundwork in the laboratory and field testing with custo-mers have now paid off. In October, together with the KRONOS company STEAG Power Minerals launched a project aimed at the joint development and future marketing of Photoment®, an innovative concrete admixture. KRONOS is an internationally operating chemical company with head office in Leverkusen and the world‘s leading manufacturer of titanium dioxide (TiO2). A cooperation agreement between STEAG Power Minerals and KRONOS was signed at the beginning of the year.

Breakdown of pollutants by photocatalysisAs a photocatalyst, under the influence of light Photoment® brings about the decomposition of atmospheric pollutants. Mainly so-called nitrogen oxides (NOx) are rendered harmless by a chemical reaction and converted into nitrate. As a result, Photoment® can help improve the quality of the air and thus the quality of life in heavily polluted conurbations, for example. Throughout the Eu, since 2010 new, more stringent limits for ni-trogen oxides are in effect – a hurdle that cities often fail to clear.

Photoment® is mainly made up of the same constituents as hard coal fly ash. The active substance proper, a special titanium dioxide (TiO2), is contributed by KRONOS. Titanium dioxide has been seeing use for many years as a white pigment in paints,

foods or cosmetics, for example. Though its photocatalytic pro-perty has been known fairly long, it has hardly been put to use so far.

Possible uses many and variedThe possible applications of Photoment® in construction mate-rials and components are manifold, but the resources for the project are limited. consequently, the initial focus is on the appli-cation as admixture for concrete paving blocks and slabs. This is a market in which STEAG Power Minerals, through its marketing of fly ash, already has excellent access to potential customers and a longstanding knowledge of market and customers.

Other applications such as mineral plasters, screen walls or noise protection walls as well as roofing tiles could follow if the market launch is successful. According to the current plans, the market launch of Photoment® is scheduled for 2014.

New roads to attractive marketsWith Photoment®, STEAG Power Minerals treads new paths, stepping out for the first time as manufacturer of an innovative ecological building material. „With Photoment® we add to our product portfolio an innovative element that opens up paths for us to additional attractive markets,“, explains Andreas Hugot, Managing Director of STEAG Power Minerals GmbH. „We are happy to have found in KRONOS a renowned and reliable partner who will generate new growth impulses together with us.“

Clean air with Photoment®

Innovative concrete admixture from STEAG Power Minerals and KRONOS

The cleanliness of the air we breathe is crucial to our health and quality of life. Particularly in cities we are exposed to pollutants, mainly the so-called nitrogen oxides of road traffic and industry. Parti-cularly in warm temperatures these oxides of nitrogen conduce to the formation of harmful ozone in layers of the atmosphere near ground level. STEAG Power Minerals and KRONOS now have jointly developed an innovative concrete admixture which can help improve the quality of the air and life‘s quality: Photoment®.

Short news

Where a professional response to customers’ wishes is concerned, STEAG Power Minerals has more experience than any other competi-tor. Nevertheless we are constantly in search of new ways to enhance our service quality and for our plants have therefore prepared for certifi-cation to DIN ISO 9001. In the next step, STEAG Power Minerals GmbH in its entirety is then to be certified according to ISO 9001.

The quality management standard ISO 90a01 is probably the most recognized and widespread certification in Germa-ny. It stipulates standards for procedu-res and processes within a company that guarantee that all customers re-ceive qualitatively high-class, reliable products and services. This system of control and regulating mechanisms is regularly checked by an independent certification body.

Objective assessment by neutral inspectors „With the new quality management sys-tem, we guarantee for our customers and partners that we will do everything to sustainably meet the demands made on the quality of our services and pro-ducts,“ emphasizes Managing Director

uwe Rath. The new system includes, among other things, the effective re-structuring of existing processes and clear stipulations of how individual work sequences are planned, implemented, monitored and improved.

For this, external experts analyze the work flows in the plants so as to make sure that the quality level once defined is reliably and constantly reached. The certifiers provide regular, well-founded feedback on the effectiveness of the QM systems and hence contribute to the measures being consistently upgraded.

Optimizing work flows, assuring quality After the completion of certification all employees can view the new stipulations on an internal platform. They are then obliged, in connection with all activities relevant to the environment, quality and safety, to act in accordance with the sti-pulations of the new manual and the QM documents. This will then apply all the more so when the whole of STEAG Power Minerals GmbH has been certified.

The QM system officer for the STEAG Power Minerals plants is the plant ma-nager of the blasting abrasives plant in Lünen. He bears the responsibility for

planning, monitoring, correcting and improving the new quality management system.

With passion for the good cause It is only all too human to look forward, after the well-earned end of a working day, above all to switching off, to the family or also the television armchair at home. At STEAG Power Minerals there are, however, also those who in their leisure time commit themselves in their very own way to their region, their club or their sporting passion. In this edition you can get to know three members of staff for whom after the end of a working day, the day’s work has not yet ended by any means.

Meditation meets MineralsDetlef FischerWith us since 1990

Detlef Fischer can easily match up to most globetrotters – he covers more than 40,000 kilometers a

year as a field service person for STEAG Power Minerals, to support customers, to visit construction

sites and to handle orders smoothly. And also in his spare time, Detlef Fischer travels one or two kilome-

ters – in his local club he plays football and volleyball and has also supported some teams as a trainer.

He hence indirectly found his way to his probably greatest passion, “I wanted, in search of new training

techniques, to take a look at the bigger picture. Fortunately our regional sports association in the state

of Saxony offers a lot of different further training courses. In that I first made contact with Qi Gong, later

then with Hui chun Gong – and there I immediately got the feeling that it could be my thing.”

Hui chun Gong (HcG) is a system of movement and relaxation exercises based on Traditional chinese

Medicine. Detlef Fischer was immediately enthusiastic about the effect of the exercises, “You are more

relaxed, calmer, more balanced, you strengthen your joints, circulation and immune system – you

simply feel so much better.” That is why he even took the one and a half year training to become a Hui

chun Gong instructor upon himself – from the end of the year he wants to give courses himself so as

to help make the far-eastern relaxation techniques better known in Germany.

Freedom for full flow Mike HarkeWith us since 2010

“It is sometimes funny when, during night-time call-outs, the terrycloth pajamas peep out from

under the firemen’s clothing”. Mike Harke likes talking about what he experiences after the end of

his working day. During everyday work he looks after a large number of shareholdings and projects

of STEAG Power Minerals from the commercial point of view from Dinslaken. But when others end

their working day, the stress sometimes only then really starts for him – at the voluntary fire service

in his home town of Heiden in the Münsterland region Harke changes from a Diplom-Kaufmann (FH)

(roughly Master of business administration) to a Deputy Fire chief. He is present at about 25 call-

outs a year, must be at the scene of the incident within eight minutes – and that often also in the

middle of the night and on the weekend, when other people are enjoying themselves.

Your most striking call-out? “The most exciting time was in any case the snow chaos in 2005. Our

region was without electricity for days, in the first 24 hours we were called out 60 times– as often

as normally in one year! With our generating sets and technical equipment we travelled from farm to

farm, from incident scene to incident scene – we were the good spirit of the village“. He is grateful

to his employer for allowing him the necessary freedom for his commitment, “For a lot of companies

it is not something to be taken for granted that employees are released for voluntary services – at

STEAG Power Minerals that was never a problem!”

The troubleshooter Andreas BertlingWith us since 1995

Actually Andreas Bertling has more than enough to do in his job at MINERALplus:

the trained logistics manager has to look after other tasks each day during the or-

ganization of waste management and account management, has to communica-

te a lot and to react at short notice. “Here fast solutions are needed and naturally

experience and a bit of improvisation talent help you to always find the best way.”

Yet, in spite of the demanding everyday work, Andreas Bertling still finds time to

engage in voluntary work for the local Duisburg Group of the DLRG (German Life-

guard Association). He even sacrificed some weekends in order to be trained as

a paramedic. At major events on the Duisburg regatta course such as the World

Rowing Masters he is one of the important first aiders for exhausted sports(wo)

men and visitors requiring help – no matter whether on the water or on land. And

his enthusiasm seems to be infectious. Smiling he tells us, “I have already infected

almost the whole family – my two daughters are involved in the Youth Task Team

and children’s swimming training and provide vigorous help.” He would like to

express particular praise for the younger volunteers, “At present we have fewer

worries about finding young people to help us than other local groups – it is great

to see that the young people who help as volunteers are all extremely responsible

and take their duties absolutely seriously.”

There I am already raring to go and then an attentive reader sends me a book tip: “In the Mood for concrete – 27 Smart Projects for Do-it-yourself “. Damn. Been there before. Old hat. Pity, so I suppose nothing will come of my rocket-like career as a new star of modern interior design.

But they really thought up some great things in the book. candle holders, bird baths, garden benches – everything cast in finest concrete. Got me really inspired. And as the queen of my heart has wanted a new kitchen for ages, there will now be one with a hand-cast and blasted countertop. And additionally fruit bowls, plates, salad dishes from the mold – hygienic, practical, and good. And an acid–resistant salad drier with 3,000 revolutions per minute – the walls will shake. >7,000Did you know that during the construction of the hard coal-fired power plants Walsum 10 and Trianel Lünen in each case more than 7,000 metric tons of fly ash was used? During the construction of new modern hard coal-fired power plants fly ash is used. Since fly ash according to DIN EN 450 generally assures the improvement of the green concrete and hardened concrete characteristics. It ensures among other things that the heat development of the concrete is reduced and makes the concrete more resistant to acid attack which is of great importance in particular in power plant construction.
