MESSAGE from the POTENTATE Illustrious Sir, Ed Stolze

Wow, it’s already May and we’re getting ready to move into the summer months. This is a prime opportunity to thank all of you for a great first half of the year. The Easter Brunch, Golf Classic, Cigar Night, and Spring Ceremonial, were all very successful and it’s all because of the hard work and dedication of our Nobles and Ladies. El Zaribah had a great showing at the Western Shrine Association meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico with over 20 Nobles in the Parade. Our Clowns were represented very well by B.B., Lucky, and Z-Klown. All three of them placed well in the competitions, and really showed everyone what El Zaribah Clowns are made of. Great Job! As far as attendance, we had the strongest showing of any other Temple in WSA outside of the host, Temple Ballut Abyad. We had the opportunity to meet with Imperial Officers Al Madsen and Doug Maxwell to get information on the Fraternity and Hospitals and we were able to meet the Candidates for Imperial Outer Guard, Illustrious Sirs Kenny Craven and Joe Savaglio.

As we move into the summer months and the Temple slows down a little bit, please focus on our goal of Membership. Our Spring Ceremonial was very successful, and we brought in 19 New Nobles. The Fall Ceremonial is coming up in October in Lake Havasu and we need to work hard to get new members in for the fall. This year we will be having a joint Ceremonial with Al Malaikah Shrine from Los Angeles. El Zaribah will be staying at the London Bridge Resort, and Al Malaikah will be staying at the Nautical Inn. Our ceremonies will be joint and we look forward to having a large number of Novices to bring in to both Temples. Please get the word out and make your plans to attend. Through membership we can continue to grow our Fraternity and support our children and hospitals.

Please have a safe summer, great experiences, and remember that each of you is a “Shining Ray of Hope” for the future of our fraternity and hospitals. God Bless each of you, and God Bless our Children.

We have found several great articles from the International Shrine . Check out the story on Red Skelton and the research work that is being done by our Shrine Hospitals. The name Pat Tillman comes up with a story on the player at the last East-West Shrine game who was awarded the Pat Tillman award.

What Makes an Onion a Vidalia? Surprisingly, it is not the particular type of onion- it's the law. According to both Georgia and federal law, only onions produced within the designated 20- county Vidalia growing region can be called Vidalia onions.

How to Store Vidalia Onions - • Wrap the onions separately in foil and place them in the refrigerator. • Hang the onions in the legs of sheer pantyhose, tying a knot between each onion, store in a cool,

dry, well ventilated area. Cut the hose below the knot when you want to use one. • Place the onions on elevated racks or screens in a cool place with no onions touching. • Chop the onions and dry them in the oven on a low setting. Remove them when they are

Shrine History

We get asked quite a few questions about El Zaribah and our past. In this series we will share our past information as found in the Arabian Tales archives. As we share the information, if you have old pictures and/or stories, let us know. Since Arizona as a state was 100 years old last year, there is a lot of data out there and it makes this series a lot of fun to write.

Last month we wrote about our buildings and how we moved from one location to the next location. This month the subject covers our Units and Clubs. As El Zaribah grew in size it kept adding more Units and Clubs. By the late 1980’s all the county seats in our area had their own Shrine Clubs. Some

were bigger than others but they were out there to support our many Nobles across our area.

Each Club had its own special events and that brought the many Nobles with their ladies from Phoenix to support the outlying Clubs. Special bus trips were planned. One of the most significant trips was to the Clubs on “The River.” The first stop was Parker. We then moved up the Colorado River to Lake Havasu, on to Bullhead City, and finally ended in Kingman before returning to Phoenix with a stop in Wickenburg for ice cream. It was a three-day trip that usually had two busloads plus several cars making the trip.

Other trips were to the Verde Valley, Flagstaff, Winslow, Payson, Prescott, Casa Grande, Scottsdale, Yuma and Show Low. With each of these trips the Shrine Clubs in the area were visited and old relationships renewed. These trips continued into the 90’s but by then the

outlying Shrine Clubs had started to be smaller in size and as that occurred the trips started to diminish.

Today, Parker, Globe, Flagstaff, Bradshaw Mountain, Lake Powell, Prescott, Mingus Mountain, Scottsdale, WestMar, Sun City and Wickenburg Shrine Clubs have either merged or gone away. Several new Shrine Clubs were formed such as West Valley and Yavapai County to support the Shriners from ever increasing areas.

The changes for the Units were not quite as dramatic as the Clubs. The Units’ problems also centered on the loss of members. An example is the Director’s Staff. In the 1980’s the Director’s Staff had a limit on the number of active members allowed and they seemed to always have a waiting list of people wanting to join. Over the past decade many of the Units have worked hard to restructure and get new members. Where in the past the Units had large fundraising events with many participants, the activities became smaller and moved from the auditorium that holds up to 800 to the Fiesta and Red Fez Room that will hold 200. The large fundraising events became Temple level activities such as Vidalia Onions and the Cornfest.

Some Units that required special abilities have had problems staying active such as the Chanters is gone, however there are still have a couple of guys who try to hold up the traditional roles of the Chanters. The band is still providing music but their size is a lot smaller and they draw upon members from across other Units to provide their music at events like the Shrine Circus and Shrine Stated meetings.

When El Zaribah moved into the new building, the roles of the Boosters and the El Mukaddyn disappeared. The Boosters was a fun group who enjoyed meeting people and sold meal and drink tickets at Shrine functions. They also had a great popcorn machine that everyone enjoyed. The drink tickets were taken to the El Mukaddyn members who served the drinks. When we moved to the new building El Mukaddyn’s mission went away. The last few members of El Mukaddyn merged with the Culinary unit.

In the next issue, we’ll take a closer look at the fundraising events of the past.

(TAMPA, Fla.) Keith Pough, linebacker for Howard University, was awarded the Pat Tillman Award at the East-West Shrine Game® banquet Friday evening. The award is presented annually to the player who demonstrates courage, perseverance and talent throughout the week leading up to the game and recognizes his overall achievements and conduct.

"Keith exemplifies the qualities we look for in the award winner," said East-West Shrine Game executive director, Harold Richardson. “From the hospital visit through practice, he has conducted himself in a way we believe Pat Tillman would be proud.”

“He first caught our attention at the visit to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Tampa. You could see that he had a great time coloring, dancing and playing with the kids,” said West team

manager, Andy Strickland. “From day one at practice, he’s

been a very vocal leader, encouraging and supporting his teammates on both defense and offense,” said West team head coach, Leeman Bennett. “He gives tremendous effort on every play and has shown great toughness. He’s the kind of player coaches like to have on the field.”

Pough, a 6’3”, 235-pound linebacker, finished his career at Howard as the all-time career leader in tackles for losses for in the FCS. For his efforts, he earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Year. Pough is the first player in Bison history to be selected to participate in the East-West Shrine Game, the oldest college football all-star game, showcasing his skills for NFL scouts.

Pough also earned the Pigskin Club of Washington College Player of the Year and the Frank. P. Bolden Award.

Howard University head coach, Gary Harrell, said, "His leadership had a strong impact on our team. He is an outstanding man, both on and off the field."

"It's a blessing and an honor to win this award that holds Pat Tillman’s name. He stood for honor, integrity, and sacrifice; those things mean everything to me," said Pough. "The visit to Shriners Hospitals for Children showed me why this is more than just a game and really motivated me to work harder this week. This has been an unforgettable experience."

The year 2013 marks the 100th birthday of fellow Mason and Shriner of 58 years, Richard “Red” Skelton. Red was a member of both the Vincennes Blue Lodge in Vincennes, Ind. and Al Malaikah Shriners in Los Angeles.

A tribute to Red – who was often

celebrated as the “world’s greatest clown” – will be held at the Red Skelton Museum Clown School – on the campus of Vincennes University in Vincennes, Ind., June 4-9, 2013. All Shrine clowns and fraternity members are invited to take part in the commemoration of the life and legacy of Red Skelton. The Legacy of Red Skelton

Born the son of a circus clown in 1913, Richard “Red” Skelton was destined to entertain the world. By age 15, Red was employed as a full-time entertainer, with

assignments ranging from vaudeville to circus performances. It was not long until Red’s slapstick comedic parodies

captured the American public’s attention. In 1941, Red premiered his own radio show, The Raleigh Cigarette Program. Ten years later, CBS adapted the popular program for television, with Red as their first host televised in color.

By the 1950s, Red had expanded his performances and appeared in more than 30 MGM films, which included Having a Wonderful Time and Bathing Beauty. In addition to being a television and radio entertainer, Red was also a famed interpretive clown and, in 1989, was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Near the end of his life, Red enjoyed the fine arts of writing, music and painting. Some of his best work is displayed at the Red Skelton Museum, including scrapbooks and photos of his eclectic life. Brother Red is buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Canada is the first to identify the genetic defect underlying a painful bone disease that causes an unusual series of symptoms including severe tooth decay, osteoporosis, and spine fractures in teenagers. Led by Frank Rauch, M.D., a pediatrician, and Pierre Moffatt, Ph.D., a basic scientist, at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Canada, the team discovered that a part of the RUNX2 gene was duplicated, and therefore caused a disease called metaphyseal dysplasia with maxillary hypoplasia and brachydactyly or MDMHB. They were able to link the unusual series of symptoms observed in patients to the changes in observed in the RUNX2 gene, which is essential for creating bone forming cells. In doing so, they established that these changes in the RUNX2 gene result in disordered bone cell production, which is the cause of MDMHB. The discovery is published in The American Journal of Human Genetics in February 2013. What does this disease look like?

MDMHB was first named and described over 30 years ago by The Montreal Children's Hospital's Fahed Halal, M.D. In 1982, he published his findings, which included the physical characteristics of 12 children and their family members who all had the same unusual series of symptoms: fractures of the spinal column (without

accident), very low bone density, crumbling teeth and large collarbones. Bones in the arms, legs and pelvis also looked unusually large on x-rays and sometimes scoliosis was present. The outcome of this disease for patients is a life in pain. Their teeth break easily and can be so painful that they have them pulled by the age of 20. As they grow, many have breaks in their back bones, similar to what occurs in elderly people with osteoporosis. Research to find the cause of MDMHB

In 2003, Dr. Rauch saw a new teenage patient in the Metabolic Bone Clinic at Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Canada. He went on to examine relatives and found that three other teens and two of the adults were affected in the same way.

"We obtained x-rays, performed bone density tests and took samples for DNA analysis," says Dr. Rauch. Two years ago, a consortium was set up for finding rare disease genes in Canada. With their support we could get the samples analyzed at the Genome Centres in Montreal and Toronto.”

There is another group that continues on a strong pace through the summer and that is your Outreach Clinic Staff. We have three Outreach Clinics scheduled through the summer – May 10, 2013, July 12, 2013 and September 6, 2013. Please remember these dates and, if you have a chance, come on down to the Maricopa County Medical Center and see our Shrine kids. Thanks to all who participated during the Ceremonial Parade in April from Virgil in the front with the Legion of Honor to Illustrious Sir Monty Fox riding with the Greetermobile.

Great ground was broken as Illustrious Sir Jack Garrett showcased the maiden run of Illustrious Sir Hut Hutson. There was a very private review at the west end of the parking lot with animated advice being offered to the rookie. All of us were very blessed to have witnessed such a great moment in parade history.

The Temple's parade in Prescott Valley will be Saturday, June 15, 2013 stepping off at 9am. All of us should line-up at 8am. Last year, three radio stations were stationed along the parade route. Please consider journeying to Prescott Valley and help El Zaribah be its best.

All new Nobles should consider joining their Temple in Prescott Valley on the 15th of June. There is always lots of room for Nobles to walk or ride in every parade. The Ladies are always present on the sidelines and support the Nobles during every parade. All Shriners in the Parade must wear their Fez except for the clowns and motorcycles... obviously, some connection.

The Character Clown is just that, a character of a real life person. This category will utilize one of the make-up categories of White Face, Auguste, or Tramp/Hobo for the facial features.

Beyond the facial design lies the Character. This could be something such as a Policeman, FireFighter, Band Director, Baseball Player, Skydiver, Racecar Driver, Hockey Player, etc. The only “requirement” is to have a distinct clown face and the character be recognizable.

Some people have the misconception that a character clown is copying a person in history such as Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, etc. However, many have discussed it and in just about every clown group or organization, the definition states the character must have a clown face from one of the three other categories.

might throw the competition to win! I remember one time I squeezed an ear too hard with my tongs and the thing shot straight up in the air and came down with a splash in the serving tray of butter, what a mess that was.

I have noticed that Illustrious Sir Ed and his Lady Cheryl like their mixed veggies sans carrots. It seems they like their orange things cold and crunchy, not hot and dripping. Don’t hesitate to give us your requests as you pass through our line. Though if it is too much, or you are too finicky you night only get a partial serving and possibly a nasty comment. So consider yourselves forewarned.

We are still trying to sell our 2 mini-parade vehicles and accompanying trailer. If there might be any interested units or individuals out there, contact Hal or Mike Fenno for more details.

We have had meetings on Saturday mornings to help plan our new activities and keep the unit moving forward. Jim had to step in at the last minute to take over as

President and is doing an outstanding job and needs all of our support.

We participate at the Ceremonials and would like volunteers to help set up, tear down, and assist with the ceremony as needed. We will be working with the Shrine in Los Angeles at Lake Havasu to put on a joint Ceremonial. This will be a lot of fun and I encourage you to join us to make sure El Zaribah has a good turnout.

Clowns April was busy for a few of

us. My Lady Teresa and I went to the Potentate’s Ball in Atlanta. We had a great time

with our Yaarab friends at a costume ball on Friday and the actual ball at the Fox Theater (the original Yaarab temple) on Saturday with a red carpet across Peach Street where the reception for the original Gone with the Wind was held. Ill. Sir Chuck Pittman presented me with an Honorary Life time membership to Yaarab Temple.

Welcome to the new Shriners from our Sprng Ceremonial. Hopefully, some of them will want to become Clowns.

As I write this, BB, Z Clown, and I are getting ready to go to WSA for Clown competition. We will advise if we bring home some hardware.

The Brothers of the Spoon are still dipping and spilling from behind the line. We saw Noble Gary Gemmell dribble gravy on his

foot and our Esteemed President Hal Resnikoff had a near miss with sauce on his. Both were wearing approved protective gear, so no injuries were recorded. Though things were hot in both instances, and I’m not talking about just the gravy and sauce.

We are looking forward to the Cornfest at the end of August, where we will be serving 2 days of butter-dripping corn. Stop by and see who is wearing the most butter or beans on his apron. I think we should have a pool as to which member wears the most home, but I have a terrible feeling that some of our members

The Legion of Honor honored long time member Chuck Hudson, 95 years young (PC 1973) as a Life Member for his contributions to our Unit

finances and his Shrine support for many years. He misses very few Shrine functions and has made substantial donations to El Zaribah over the years.

Noble Douglas Lee Holbert, Yuma, was welcomed as a new member at our most recent meeting.

To be a member of the Legion of Honor a Noble must have been or currently is a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or its Allies and served honorably.

Transportation Your Transportation Unit has

been promoting the Shrine. Besides parading with El Zaribah we have been at several other

events. We have taken our little trucks to Shepherd of the Valley School for a transportation day event and to Gold Canyon United Methodist Church for an Easter fun day filled with egg hunts and games. The kids really enjoy seeing the trucks and they get a chance to sit in the driver’s seat and get their photo taken. We have also been to Roadrunner Park for a short parade. Please let us know if you would like to join us at any of these events. We have some invitations for other upcoming activities.

We have been working hard to get our 2nd pin table for the Fiesta Room finished this year, as it has been in the working stage for almost 3 years now.

Temple Guard

During April, the Temple Guard’s annual picnic and Hillbilly Degree had slightly over 100 friends and family attending at El Dorado Park in

Scottsdale. The weather was perfect for food, drink and fun. We thank everyone who joined us for a very successful day.

The Guardsmen are pleased to announce the recent addition of Lenny Williams and Woody Wiedmeyer to our membership. We look forward to their help and humor in the future as we move forward.

Congratulations to the latest Nobles to join El Zaribah during the April Ceremonial. We invite every new Noble to join us for our meeting. We would be happy to buy your dinner and have you as a guest for the meeting.

Our annual Munds Park Weekend is scheduled for July 26 and 27, which is the last weekend of July. We have had some great crowds and many good times in the mountains every year. Bring you Lady, kids and the dog for a great weekend.

de’ Orleans Restaurant in downtown Mesa to show the club’s appreciation, for all the Nobles who work the aluminum can project, Everyone enjoyed a great evening of food and fellowship.

Longtime member and secretary, Noble Clancy Stouffer and Lady Mary, may not return next fall as they plan to move to a new residence. Our sincere thanks go out to the Stouffers for all the support, dedication, and work they have contributed over the years to our Club

Many of us have dinner together in the Red Fez Room prior to our meetings. We spend most of the time talking about or

working with computers. If you have a computer problem that requires bringing in your computer do not hesitate to do that.

Recently we discussed how to install a new hard drive, how to use Windows 8, how to disable an anti-virus to use a program, what to do if a computer freezes, how to fix a slow computer, link computers together, and load Skype. Drum and Bugle

Yuma Shrine Club Well, May is here and having

finished with the Yuma County Fair, we have some summer parades coming up to get us out

of the desert heat. To all Nobles and Ladies that worked

the fair food booth from both Yuma and Yuma Foothills clubs, a big Thank You! It's a long week with a lot of hard work and we cannot do it without your help and support. We all raised a lot of money for a great cause.

Some of our Nobles have left for their summer homes and we wish them safe travels, and hope to see them next fall.

On May 14 Yuma Shrine Club will have its last stated meeting, before we go dark for the summer. Our next stated meeting is scheduled for 7pm Tuesday September 10, 2013.

Zane Grey Shrine Club

Zane Grey Shrine Club has a busy schedule for the next couple of months. We have taken

orders for 350 bags of onions and are continuing to sell more. Our usual meetings are held on the 3rd Wed. of every month at Tiny’s Restaurant. Our golf tournament is planned and ready to go for Aug 16th. Come enjoy the coolness of the Rim Country and stay the night to attend the Rodeo Parade and the OV after the Parade. Hope to see many of you there.

We’re all getting ready for WAOUM in Tucson in September but before that

again this year and we are counting on him to do another BIG job. PP Noble Doug is putting together the circus in September. We are working with Aztlan Lodge #1 on a picnic after the Prescott Valley Parade June 15, 2013. Noble Sherwin White is our Chair for this event and we all are looking forward to a great event.

Hillbilly Clan #156 had a conclave on March 17 at the newlyweds Lee and Bobbie’s shack. Everyone showed up dressed reel nice as Hillbillies. After the Degree the Rev. Monsees hitched Illustrious Larry Peterson, Past Potentate of Algeria Temple to Lady Sue. We moved to the patio where a band played Irish ballads. Their “Old Danny Boy” brought a tear to me eye.

Job’s Daughters Greetings from Arizona Job’s

Daughters! We held a “Hike for H.I.K.E.”

at Roadrunner Park and we raised $300 for the Hearing Impaired Kids Endowment fund, the charity of Job’s Daughters International. We walked around the park and enjoyed an egg toss and a water balloon fight, followed by a tasty lunch. Thank you to all who made the day successful!

In June, we’ll gather for our annual statewide sessions, now called Royal Retreat. Ritual competition will be included. Individual competition will be held on Friday, and group ritual will take place on Saturday morning. We are all excited for the opportunity to regroup and focus on growing our bethels, while still coming together as a large group and rekindling our friendships. Our formal banquet at Royal Retreat will take place Saturday night, June 22nd, and your attendance is welcome and appreciated. Please contact Alan Dye for information regarding reservations. We will enjoy good company, remarks from the leaders of our appendent bodies, celebrate the winners of ritual competition and various other activities, as well as witness the coronation of our incoming Arizona State Honored Queen.
