Hooray, The Sun’s Shining…… well at least it is whilst I amwriting this, and THE weddingis just about to happen or hasjust happened all depending onwhen you get your “Web.”We have public holidays andthe thoughts of summerwarmth, strawberries andcream, Wimbledon and aBritish winner, well we candream at least!Yet we also have the ongoing conflict in Libya, Afghanistan and manyother places in the world. The aftermath of the massive earthquake andTsunami in Japan is horrific and yet the spirit of the Japanese people hasbeen truly inspiring. They have been ordered with no panic and yetdespite what is happening around them they have kept amazinglycheerful; they seemed to have found hope even in what appears to be avery dark situation. We have just celebrated Easter, which for the disciples at least was a timeof darkness and seeming hopelessness, the winter of their lives, whichsuddenly turned into hope for the future as they discovered the emptytomb and the Risen Lord..What looked like the impossible had happened and Jesus was alive andthat is the amazing, exciting, yet scary thing about being on a journeywith Jesus, you can never be sure about what is going to happen next as Ihave personally discovered. I began my Christian life in a Baptist Church and the Baptist way ofdoing things was all that I knew until I sensed a call to move. Life is verydifferent now. No single church as in the past, but rather four churchesworking with different denominations, Methodist, Anglican and URC. Until I became involved with Clavering LEP I always thought 1662 wasa musical work, but no, I discovered it is a Communion Service and onethat I have grown to like; you never know where journeying with Jesusleads you.

Perhaps the most important part of our Christian lives is being open tothe Holy Spirit’s leading, but it is so easy to close doors on God justbecause something is different. The problem when we take the closeddoor route is that we go off the road and therefore the journey the Lordhas mapped out for us. The wonderful thing about Jesus is that evenwhen we end up going in the wrong direction He doesn’t give up on us.He loves us even as we are, but He loves us so much He doesn’t want toleave us as we are; He wants the best for each and every one of us.So is journeying with Jesus a comfy drive on a gentle country route or isit like an F1 drive, 180 miles an hour on the straight and slowing down toa snails pace in the chicane before accelerating away again? My experience has been a bit of both. But I am beginning to recognisethat the comfy country meander with Jesus is far more about me ignoringeverything going on around me so that I feel safe. Being on a journeywith Jesus that is exciting, but at times scary has turned out to be a timegrowth for me, even at my great age!!Where am I trying to go with all of this?None of us knows what tomorrow will bring. It might be brilliant, itmight be challenging and yes it might even be scary, but we worship aRisen Lord who has gone through more than any of us can begin toimagine. He was a radical in His day and He still is. He was on a journeyfrom the moment he began His earthly life and I doubt it was ever astraightforward one. Through it all he trusted Father God to lead andguide, to show Him the way home. As we enjoy the late spring/early summer weather, the Royal Weddingand the extra day off because of it, let us thank God for all we have andfor His guiding hand on our lives.I would like to finish with a prayer of St Patrick.“May the strength of God pilot us. May the power of God preserve us.May the wisdom of God instruct us. May the hand of God direct us. Maythe shield of God defend us. May the host of God guard us against thesnares of the evil one and the temptations of the world. May Christ bewith us, Christ above us, Christ in us Christ before us. May thy salvationO Lord, be always ours this day and for evermore. Amen.”Every blessing, David Keeble.

Bye Bye ‘Puppy Love’– Hello Grown up Guide Dog!!

Zandra (Zanni to everyone in ourParish though!) is now 14 months oldand is very ready to move on to hernext stage in Guide Dog Training.I haven’t written a blog for a coupleof months, because being a little girlpuppy, she had a three week season, and then had to be at the vets forspaying – so we were ‘out of action’for a while. As soon as she wasbetter we were up and working incities and towns, mixing with largecrowds and going along to clubs, schools, halls, giving talks andraising monies for Guide Dogs for theBlind and generally getting her use tothe noises of everyday life in busybuildings. To experience, laughter, singing and clapping, floor surfaces, people and crowds. All this ashumans, we take for granted, but forcertain puppies it can be ‘frightening’

and makes them a nervous puppy –but not for Zanni, she takes this all inher stride now, and occasionally, ifwe are giving a talk in a large hall, she will just raise her head slightly, when the clapping begins, and goback to sleep on the floor, until theclapping stops. We will miss her terribly, she hasbeen the most affectionate of puppies, and has been a big part of our familylife for one whole year. Now she willgo back to our Centre at WoodfordGreen and share a kennel and runwith another Labrador, of the sameage, for approximately 4 months. Hertrainer will work both puppies andthey will also play together. After approximately 4 months Zanniwill be allocated to a MobilityInstructor, who will then take her intoher own home, and work alongsidethe prospective owner. This is a verygradual process and the MobilityInstructors work with the blindpeople extremely carefully andclosely and familiarise the puppywith the blind persons every dayprocedure and needs. And hopefully Zandra (Zanni) willrespond well and qualify, when she isapproximately 2 years old.I am sure, that there are a lot ofpeople in our villages who will joinme in wishing Zanni ‘Good Luck’.Hazel Mander-Callaby

I was flattered to be asked to speak in Hadleigh church at the service for theWomen’s World Day of Prayer: I had never done anything like this before. Then, immediately, I started feeling anxious. I had never done anything likethis before, what if I was incapable of doing it? Would I feel so nervous that Iwould only be capable of embarrassing myself? How many people would bepresent? Who? Why was I being asked? The answer to the last question wassimple: the service had been put together this year by the women of Chile andI have visited Chile twice. My brief was to speak on anything I liked for 10minutes, linking something about Christianity/the Bible, the theme of theservice (“Sharing our loaves”) and Chile.Over the next few weeks I prayed that God would help me with this talk, Iasked friends to pray for me, and I read and thought a lot about it. I decidedthat the bible reading from Mark’s gospel about Jesus feeding 5000 men wasthe topic I would go for. The “Sharing our loaves” theme had obviously beentaken from this account. I was not sure how Chile would weave into this. Iwrote to my friend in Chile asking her about the needs of women in Chile, Iread a book about Mark’s gospel, I listened to several sermons on the passage, Icontinued to think and pray about it. Still not sure where Chile came into it all.The day came when I just had to sit down and write my talk. Would I be ableto do it? Lots of ideas were mulling around in my mind. I prayed that Godwould help me. I started to type. Two hours later I stood up. I had finished. Ihad done it. I could do it. What is more, I felt exhilarated by the experience.I had just written a talk about Jesus feeding the 5000 that answered twofundamental questions, “Who is Jesus?” and “What is our greatest need?”(The answers, in a nutshell, are “Jesus is God” and “Our greatest need isknowledge of God”.) My exhilaration was because I knew that I had onlybeen able to do it because God had helped me do it, and – here is the amazingpart – I had written that sharing knowledge of God is a miracle ministry. our own strength we do not have the resources to do the work. God gives usall we need. I had just shown that this was true in my own experience. Now I was quite looking forward actually to giving the talk. I had beenassured that very few people were likely to be present. Surely I could copewith that? I turn up at Hadleigh church. It is an enormous building; it feelsmore like a cathedral than a church. The “very few people” turn out to beabout 50. Someone asks me about my qualifications to speak. Everythingappears to be conspiring to make me feel nervous, but I remind myself, “Thisis a miracle ministry. Not my strength but yours, God. Or in God’s words,‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”Waves of nervousness affect me from time to time during the service, but Istand up. I feel calm. I enjoy it even. Not surprisingly, God is true to hispromises. I have had the joy of taking part in a miracle ministry.Afterwards, I felt very relieved, but privileged to have had the opportunity.People say nice things to me, and I can’t tell whether they are just being polite, but I hope some are true. I’m sure I had heard one elderly lady snoring, butevidently she needed the sleep. Did Chile feature in my talk? Well, not really, except that Jesus is God in Chile too. Chileans too have knowledge of God astheir greatest need. As my friend in Chile said, “Make sure you make Jesusshine like the light that he is.” I played my part; God always does his.Sarah Brock

Oh No! Not Sprouts Again –AgainLast month I described some vegetables that were a little more unusual than youraverage sprout; this time, I’d like to suggest some delicious veg that will require abit more thought and planning than the annual varieties previously described.

Asparagus is not particularly difficultto grow, but some people feel it takes alot of space for a short season ofproduction and the plants can take 2 – 3years before you can crop them fully. Idon’t think that 6 weeks yield is a shortseason, but it is a perennial plant, so thesoil cannot be used for following onwith other veg. An asparagus bed canbe productive for 20 years, so thegreatest challenges are maintaininggood soil condition and keepingperennial weeds at bay. There isnothing better than getting the waterboiling, going out to cut your asparagus spears, then sitting down to eat them withsoftened butter running down your fingers (or if you must hollandaise sauce),within just 10 minutes: “keep it local” I say. Once you’ve finally got bored withthis, perhaps towards the endof the 6 weeks, you can usethem in quiches, salads orwrapped in ham with acheese sauce.Globe Artichokes (not to beconfused with JerusalemArtichokes) are quite largeperennial plants related tothistles that will provideseveral large and spinyflower ‘buds’ each year tocook in boiling water an dthen st rip the fleshy bases

from the ‘leaves’ with your teeth (this is a nicer experience than it sounds) and eatthe heart with a hollandaise sauce or mayonnaise as a starter. The hearts are oftenfound in olive oil or in tins in the supermarket and make an excellent pizza toppingwith Red Peppers. The main problem is that the plants are not reliably hardy andDecember’s sudden intensely cold period has very nearly seen mine off after theystruggled back from the previous winter: better protection obviously required.Another vegetable that is becoming increasingly available in supermarkets is theJerusalem Artichoke. It isrelated to the sunflower, easy togrow (just replant a tuber inFeb/Mar), requires noprotection and can provide auseful windbreak in theallotment. With a nutty, earthyflavour I think the tubers arevery tasty in soups and stews, roasted to a fudgy-soft centre,or even sliced very thinly into asalad where they have acrunchy texture. The mainproblem with JerusalemArtichokes is the dramaticeffect on your digestive system– they’re not known as‘fartichokes’ for nothing.

If you grow onionssuccessfully, you might tryshallots and garlic, which enjoymuch the same conditions, butstore for a lot longer – up to 9months for shallots, 6 – 12months for garlic. However, make sure that you grow thesoft-necked type of garlic as the hard-necked forms do not keep well, planting inOctober or November, along with the overwintering onions and shallots. You canthen of course plant further onion bulbs in the spring. I hope that this has given you food for thought and that you will enjoy your newrange of ingredients.Happy planting,Rose Madder

Local Walks…from Duddenhoe End to Clavering Lakes

Begin your walk from Duddenhoe End village hall by turning right down themain street (with properties either side), to the junction at the bottom wheretake a right turn signposted toward ‘Arkesdon’ and ‘Clavering’.

After 1/2 mile you will see ‘The Old Farmhouse‘ on your right, immediatelypast this house take a right turn signposted toward ‘Cosh Farm Only’.After 1/2 mile you will see‘Cosh Farm’ set back on the right, do not turn rightinto their drive but continue onto an unmade track for about 200 yards untilreaching a small ford (sometimes dry). Immediately before this ford take a leftturn, clearly signposted ‘footpath’, along the side of a hedge keeping to the leftof the hedge at all times.

Follow the path along the side of the hedge with open field on left and bearright at the end of the hedge going under some very low trees until eventuallyreaching a wooden stile, which climb over. Cross the corner of the field untilreaching the next stile, which climb over.

Then crossing a small wooden bridge onto ‘the island’, follow the trackthrough the woods ensuring that you keep the ponds on your right. Eventuallyyou will cross another small wooden bridge off ‘the island’ which leads youinto a large equestrian centre, which bearing to the left walk through, andcontinue straight on past greenhouses on your left and paddocks on both sidesuntil after about 1/4 mile, finally reaching your destination on the leftClavering Lakes.

You may wish at this stage to treat yourselves to a well deserved coffee orperhaps a full blown meal sitting on the terraces overlooking the fivepicturesque lakes before making your return journey. Their full Englishbreakfast is to die for!!

See their website www.clavering-lakes.co.uk. for opening times etc.

Duration of walk, approximately 45 minutes each way.

Have lots of fun!John McAdams

They arequestions we can ask ourselves asGod’s church as we seek todiscover what God is calling us tobecome. Andy Colebrooke

Children at Heydon. 1950's

This is a photo of children in Heydon, taken on my old Box Brownie in themid 1950's. You will notice no designer gear here! They are from the LH Side, Bob Barnes, Alan Barnes, young girl who was agranddaughter of the Stigwood family (the Stigwoods were farmers who livedin Fowlmere Road). The girl with the plaits is Isabel Cranwell (I think thatwas her surname) from Chrishall. Rear behind Bob Barnes is Terry Flack. Then, Maurice Sutton, my late cousin, and then Janet Flack. The 2 Barnes were brothers, and I think the 2 Flackswere cousins. Terry had had a sister, Sylvia, who had died at a very early age. They were mostly the children of farm workers, apart from Maurice, his fatherwas Len Sutton, and he was a gamekeeper. Let me know what you think of thephoto. Vic Arnold

Anglicans in Europe When you take your holiday on the Continent do you manage to get tochurch? Did you know that there are around 275 Anglican chaplainciesscattered around Europe. They come under the Anglican Diocese inEurope, whose current diocesan bishop is Bishop Geoffrey Rowell, whowas enthroned in Gibraltar Cathedral on 1st November 2001. Thisdiocese is the largest in the Church of England and serves the Anglicancommunity throughout Europe as well as in Morocco, Turkey and thewhole of the former Soviet Union. It has been a special pleasure to worship abroad in English, in Paris,Brussels and Barcelona. You meet some fascinating people. I have hadthe privilege of doing holiday chaplaincies in Switzerland, France andSpain. The first one was at Davos back in 1985. Further chaplaincieshave followed in Interlaken, Zermatt and Wengen. Wengen is myfavourite with its car-free streets, and its own English Church of StBernard. Whilst in Wengen I conducted a marriage blessing for twoEnglish members of the Downhill Only Club. The Club gets its namefrom the British pioneers of Alpine skiing. Those at Wengen werechallenged by the Kandahar Club from Mürren in 1925. In response tothe smart uniforms of the Kandahar Club, the Wengen skiers calledthemselves the Downhill Only Club to make the point that they couldtake the train up to Kleine Scheidegg and ski downhill, whereas atMürren there were no trains or lifts for skiers, only an uphill trudge onfoot. In 1987 I took a party from our church in Hotwells, Bristol, to do acampsite chaplaincy at Carnac. We lived in very close quarters and hadmany laughs and little comfort. Somehow we found our team of‘Hotwellies’ entered into a volleyball contest against Germans, Frenchand Dutch opposition. We were totally outclassed. When we werelosing something like 12-0, I noticed the captain of the Dutch team givea knowing look to the server, a huge Dutchwoman, who thendeliberately served the ball out of court to give a chance to the poorEnglish ‘Hotwellies’. For some years Thompson-Tui ran ‘Young atHeart’ holidays, complete with tea dances and chaplains. Margaret and Iwere employed by them one Christmas at Benalmadena on the Costa

del Sol. Our attempts at dancing were not successful; the tea danceswere taken over by groups of sequence dancers, who were keen to usethe latest steps and were not very patient of our stumbling efforts. My most recent experience of overseas chaplaincies has been two spellsas a locum on the Spanish island of Lanzarote in the Canaries. Margaretand I were there in July and August last year, followed by a further sixweeks over Christmas and the New Year. We stayed in the ChaplaincyHouse, and drove all over the island with its lunar-like landscape ofvolcanic rock and ash. Services were in three different venues onSundays, mainly in Roman Catholic churches kindly lent out by theRoman authorities. On one occasion I found myself in a packed churchin Teguise taking a joint English and Spanish funeral service with thelocal Roman Catholic priest. We flew by the seat of our pants since Idid not speak Spanish and he did not speak a word of English! On thelighter side, I even managed to enjoy my first ever Burns Night Supperin Lanzarote.Next time you are going on holiday in Europe, do look up your nearestEnglish speaking church.
