partment of Corrections Secretary’s Journal - 4/22/11 | Soap andobos” (Kudos to Assistant Chief Patti Casey)
sual conversation between our Assistant Chief of Purchasing, Patti Casey, and a representative from a detention supplier a fewths ago should save our Department close to a million dollars over a three-year period.
ing a routine meeting with a representative from Bob Barker Company, Patti learned that South Carolina was piloting a switchwhat we call “Bobos,” canvas shoes inmates wear around the compound, to a Croc-style rubber clog. Patti informed Asst. Dir.
ield Support Svs. Charlie Terrell, who contacted South Carolina staff about their impressions. They reported only having toace two pairs during their one-year pilot. So we launched our own pilots in November at Demilly, Lowell Work Camp and Levystry Camp, and the response has been positive from both staff and inmates.
ording to Lowell C.I. Warden Southerland: “Of the inmates that I have spoken to so far, everyone prefers the clogs. They sayare more comfortable, last longer, are easier to clean, don’t retain odors, and can be worn in the shower.”
ing the pilot, the Majors from the facilities also reported that the inmates love the clogs, and said they had not had to replaceyet. Bobos, on the other hand, have to be replaced routinely, sometimes within days of being issued. The clogs and the bobosvery close in price, but because the clogs last much longer they end up costing less in the long term. I call that a win for Floridaayers.
there’s more. Our staff took a close look at the 17,000 cases of bar soap we purchase annually, and thought we could do better.size of the bar of soap that we were purchasing was really too large for an institutional setting, which resulted in waste. A
sequent bid to locate a vendor that could provide a smaller bar size at a better price will result in savings close to $200,000ually.
at our staff did in both these situations was to look with a critical eye (and ear) at some common, everyday purchases to seere we could save some money without sacrificing quality. I know our field staff come up with cost savings ideas all the time –Prudential Davis Productivity Award winners prove that every year. I challenge all staff to examine your areas of expertise, ther it’s laundry, mail room, food service, work squads, etc., and make suggestions to your wardens and supervisors for costngs and improvements. If you have a cost-saving or efficiency success story, please share it with us by sending it to the Compasslbox, which is “Events” and we’ll highlight it in our “Cost Savings” section. Or you can always send me your ideas directly [email protected]. You’re the subject matter experts, and I really want to hear your ideas.
