ROCK N ROLL TRIVIA Did you know that 1. The airplane that Buddy Holly died in was called American Pie.  And of course, that was the day the music died. Waylon Jennings was the one who

gave up his seat for Buddy that night. 2. It cost $24 at the gate to get into Woodstock.

DENNIS & JONIIt seems that every week we hear about another one of our rock hero’s passing. In reality it probably seems like every 23 days, but you get the point. These losses bring back memories of a time in my life when the music provided the soundtrack. It might not even be a happy memory. While the Beach Boys “Good Vibrations” can take me back to my first date, there’s a beautiful song by the Counting Crows that takes me back to the night my father died. Such is the power of music. It also reminds me of my own mortality, especially when I realize just how long ago it was that I was listening to the music.

We must keep in mind that the “norm” of a life of a rock and roll artist in the day typically included partying hard and substance abuse. Clearly this must have contributed to their longevity - Keith Richards being the obvious exception. Partying did not have an effect on the life of Sir George Martin however. He was 90. And as we all know he was instrumental in The Beatles’ success. The Beatles seemed to have been there my whole life and my first memory of music was my sister’s 45 of “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. In fact, the first record I EVER bought was “Hey Jude”! Sir Martin’s death is just another reminder that I am alas getting older. I first heard David Bowie back in the early 70’s when “Space Oddity” was playing on all the AM radio stations. His music was a constant in my life from then on and I own more than one Bowie CD with quite a few favourite songs. When I think of going to night clubs in the 80’s, I think of the driving beat of “Let’s Dance” propelling the dance floor. Glenn Frey of the Eagles. So much good music. During their prime years their songs were truly a staple of my life. We all focus on “Hotel California” but I think I liked “One of These Nights” better. I saw the Eagles during their “Hotel California” tour and even saw the actual Hotel California last year when in Mexico. I was a teenager in the 70’s and the Eagles’ music was in the background on many road trip adventures. And of course now we have lost Prince. Prince came out of the 80’s and will always be remembered for the album and movie “Purple Rain”. My first introduction to his music was the album “1999”. Beyond that, I honestly didn’t follow his career that closely until “Purple Rain”. Was too funky for me I guess. I honestly don’t believe the average person would be able to list 5 Prince songs, but I knew one girl who had every one of his albums, and he did have a huge influence on many artists, and that speaks highly of his talent. We do have one thing in common though: For about 5 years, I was known as “The guy formally known as Bruce”. Another thing we have in common is that we were born the same year. As was Michael Jackson, Madonna and Donny Osmond. Madonna is still alive. I think Donny is still alive but am not sure how important that is. JK.

And so I repeat – Live each day as if it is your last. You never know what the universe holds in store, and I know I don’t want to spend my last day complaining about, what is in the big picture, irrelevant crap.

WHITE ROCK ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: BRUCE’S CORNER

Dennis Pook & Joni Anderson have been performing music together for more than a decade, entertaining at many local White Rock venues including West Beach Bar & Grill, Iguanas, Five Corners Bistro, Beecher Street Café, Uli’s, Tudor Ale House, Belles, Tommy Salsa’s and many more.

“We discovered each other when my wife, Roberta, bumped into Joni at a local market and happened to mention that I played some guitar and had a gig at Iguanas Restaurant,” mentions Pook. “Joni offered that she also played some guitar… Before you know it, Joni and I had arranged a little jam session where we discovered we had a serious mutual love of harmony singing.”

As such, the strength of “Dennis & Joni” are the beautiful vocal harmonies sung through their extensive repertoire of old and new classics. They take turns singing the lead vocal although a lot of their material uses both voices all of the time! They play many “Boy & Girl Duets” such as Picture (Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow), Leather & Lace (Stevie Nicks & Don Henley), Lucky (Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillet) and I Need You Now (Lady Antebellum). Accompanying themselves on acoustic guitars, their music passes through several genres including folk, country, pop, rock and blues. Dennis & Joni have also enjoyed performances at many special events such as Canada Day celebrations, White Rock Sea Festival, Surrey Library Grand Opening and the Surrey Arts Centre events. Be sure to catch Dennis & Joni at West Beach on Saturday May 7!
