From the President

One of the c h ie f con ce r n s thes e days is that ofcosts a n d their e ffec t on Club activities. I havereceived quite a bit o f com men t regarding the PanPa cifi c Rally with som e budget esti m a tes whichs eem to me to b e unrealistic. Many members a loem aking a r ra ngemen ts to minimis e the outlay a n dwhile s ome expens e is unavoidable. I 'm sure thos epeople who h a ve a tten ded earlier rallies of t hi s ty pewould regard the ex pen d itu re as well worth it. Dopl an to be there - it co u ld be the ex per ie n ce of a lifetime .

At the time of writing this colu m n the Gulf warh a s finished and we look forward to s ee in g our twoClub members in the support forces safely homea gain . It would be pl ea sing to be a b le to rec ord adrop in fuel prices a lt h ou gh one fears that the fullco sts of the fighting m ay well be gathered from theworld' s mctortsts OVC l" the next few years . I a mawaiting with some foreboding . rev elations a bou tthe h orror undoubtedly unlea shed in that part ofthe world over the pa st grim m onths behind thescen es of what h a s a p peare d to be an a lmos tclinical war.

It wa s good to m eet many entrants in the NationalMotorcycl e Rally a n d see such a range ofold bikes.I wa s particularly impressed to note that t heoverall winner wa s Bu d Grose on the some HarleyDavids on that h e won on in 1973. Burt Munro 1900-1978

Burt Munro corresponded over many years with his friend John Andrews in England, an American V-Twinenthusiast. John found Bun's letters had no equal for showing the determination, ingenuity and persistence in

trying to make, both the Indian and the Velocette gofaster. This article iscompiled from a letter to John dated 21stMarch 1970 which has been edited slightly asit was a bitrambling! but it does express Bun's style and ofhis trials, tribulations and success in the quest for more speed. This is the conclusion to the story we began last issue. Ed.

car could be expanded from thesecomponents .

Riley themselves had entered thefield rin 1896 building both (motorb icycles) and tricars . In 1906 theybuilt the four wheeled 9 h.p. twincylinder engined car which firmlyestablished them in the motor carindustry. They began with simplecombinations tncorporating a bicycletype frame with handle bar steering,a driver's saddle and a wicker baskcl-type passengers chair. Theseearly machines used a three or threeand a half h. p. air cooled engine andthen a four and a half h.p. watercooled engine. With this heavierengine came frame modilkationsresulting in the Riley Trlcar. Thismachine could definitely claim apositive resemblance to the motor

car. It was built on a duplex tubularframe, had conventional steering andthe engine mounted under the driver's seat connected to the three speedgearbox by chain and drive wastransmitted to the rear wheel byroller chain. A 6 h. p. Vee twin enginewas built and then the 9 h.p. enginewhich was two of the four and a halfh.p. cylinders mounted onto a common crankcase brought instantsuccess. The Tricar endowed withthe 9 h.p. engine was said to becapable 01'60 m.p.h. In 1906 the 9h.p. - 4 wheeled car appeared andimmediately made its presence feltat hill climbs and speed events. Itwas also reputed to be the first car inthe world to be offered with detach able wheels.

ect pushed the Riley restoration further back enlivened occasionallywhen some Riley enthusiast wouldapproach Garry and try and persuade him to sell the 9 h.p. bits. Thereply was always the same - "I willrestore it one day".

During the winter of 1986 Garryand his wife Dinah had the opportunity to take an overseas trip to theU.S.A., The British Isles and Europe.Suddenly the Riley project came backto life as the possibility of seeing andexamining a complete car presenteditself.

Of the three remaining cars in theworld. all in the U.K., the mostsuitable subject would undoubtedlybe the one at the British LeylandHeritage Museum at Syon Park inSouth Kensington. Garry wrote to

Ivan and Garry completed theirnegotiations and a 1927 Nortonmotor-cycle needing much work onit was swapped for the Riley bits.

Full of enthusiasm for his newproject Garry advertised in BeadedWheels and contacted countlesspeople trying to locate further partsand information concerning the Rileyproject. Nothing much eventuatedfrom this and Garry came to theconclusion that probably no morethan two or three of these cars evercame to New Zealand and thereforethe possibility of finding many moreparts was most unlikely.

The years rolled by and heavyinvolvement with the MarlboroughBranch and the house building pro]-

A letter to these peopleconcerning the possibility of eitherpurchasing the radiator or swappingit for another was not replied tobefore Garry and Dinah departedoverseas. lJ

ou t is the only real answer to thewelding of cast-iron and aluminiumengine parts. Unfortunately th ereare very few welders with this experience. Almost all manual weldingtoday is arc welding. A cylinder blockperfectly welded would be useless ifit would not fit. Preheating of cast ings in preparation for welding. andstress relieving a fte r welding. is acomplicated business. Where to putthe heat. the type of oven required .the use of expandingjigs to maintainalignment. etc. is a life study. SulTicientto say that distortion problemscan be avoided. and overcome. andthe part perfectly aligned. Stressrelieving will remove strain. and makethe casting less likely to crack. Infact when having a repair. the possibility of improvement should alwaysbe considered. I saw a block recently

that had obviously been overheating. A large part of the jacket was cutaway. and inside. the jacket wasblocked solid with deposit. This waschipped and cleaned away. to allowfull water circulation again. Thejacket was replaced by we lding in.

The s u cces s fu l saving and repairof engine parts is usually the combined effort of several craftsmen. Anexample of how men combine theircraft, and meet the problems encountered in the repair of these historic engines. is well illustrated in arepair my company carried out on anAlfa-Romeo cylinder block. Theblock. which was of cast-iron. wascracked in the dome of a fixed headcylinder. and the cracks extendedinto the two valve seats. It wascarefully placed and supported in agas muffle . and the temperatureraised slowly. At th e correct temperature. fusion welding commenced.welding through the full thickness ofthe metal where cracked. and moremetal was added to the valve seats tobuild them up. Excess metal nowhad to be rough machined away. totest the welds. A tool maker nowtook over. to make necessarv formtools . and bushes to fit in th ~~ bore.ancl these were taken over by anexperienced vertical borer. Machining the valve seats. a blind. andangled operation. was overcome byfirst making a right handed valveseat culler. with a left handed inter-

nal thread. Testing was the nextoperation. and on water pressuretesting. it was found to be leakingbehind a liner in the bore. At someearlier time. the liner had beenpinned. and therefore could not bewithdrawn. The block was thereforeset up on the boring machine. andthe liner bored out. On examiningthe bore. the cause of the leak was anold botched repair. This meant morefusion welding. and machining. Another test showed leaks from thevalve pockets. again from an oldrepair. These were cut out. andagain more fusion welding. and further testing. Finally. two defectivespark plug holes were filled in withnew metal. and bored. and rescrewed. The finished job passed a water pressure test of 30 Ibs per square inch. This is only a rough ou tline of thework done. but it was a combinedeffort of eight men. ea ch a specialistin his particular work. that savedthis historic car.

One minor niggle is that the photographer felt it necessary to introduce fashion models into some of thephotographs and while he has hadthe good sense to allow the cars to bethe centre-piece of the picture andthe young ladies merely a pleasantbackground one does wonder why itwas done.

Never mind! A good read and thesort of book that you can dip into atrandom and always find somethingof in terest to stimulate the imagination.

Veterans1 have recently been to ld tha t a

number of owners of veterans arenot intending to en te r th e Rally asthey consider it to be unsuitable forveterans.

1 would like to say that such anotion is not en tire ly correct as theRa lly has been planned for a ll typesof vehicles. However th e commen tdoes deserve s ome remark and cons idera tion by us.

Most vet erans in classes 11 and12 would be quite ca pa ble of traversing each route in a reasonabletime and returning to Pa lmerstonNorth with in a day a nd this is borneout by th e speed grou ps chosen byowners entering such vehicles.

The real problem appears to be forthe older and s lower veterans . For 1a n d 2 cylinder cars . for motorcyclesand sl ow commercials the ro u tesmay be more difficult or longer thancan be expected to reasonablyac hieveunder their own power in a day . Wewe re well aware of this a n d thoughtto make it easier by a llowi ng such

veh icles as wished to be trail eredover untimed sections . thus effectively shortening th e distance to driveor rid e . but I am now told that this isnot particularly favoured.

Therefore . a s we want owners ofall types of vehicles to feel able toen ter a nd enjoy th e Rally and. therebya lso. to present a good re presentationof vehicles . we Will need to make itmore possible and desirable for vetera ns to en te r and participate .

After con s u lta ti on with ChiefMarshal. Les Allbon, th e obviousso lution is to offer shorter. eas ierroutes of about 40 to 50 mil es dailytot al and . thus effectively offer a rallywithin the Rally for classes 1. 2 a nd3 a nd a ll. or parts. of classes 10 . 18a nd 19 (basi cally a ll the A a nd Bs peed grou ps). Th is would presentno problem to us providing we gotth e s u ppor t of sufficien t entries tomake it worthwhile.

Here is how it would work. For the Monte Carlo routes we

would ass u me th at most veh icles inthose clas ses will be trailered to th evarious Monte Carlo starts wh ereth ere will be opportunities to u s eth em on short s cenic ru ns . For th esake of th e public and th e s piri t ofthe rally we would like all vehicles totake part in th e official Mon te Ca rlostarts and finish . However . a pa r tfrom perhaps a s ho rt co m petitivesection at one end or the other. vehicles in those classes wou ld betrailered to Palmerston North on th efirst day. We would undertake toreunite drivers with back-up vehicles if a nd when required .

Of th e hub routes. Foxton presentsno problem as far as being wit hin th erange and ca pa bilities of slow vet erans. For the other four routes wehave two options. If en tra n ts wish toparticipa te in the lunchstop acti vities a nd a tt ract ions we can simplycrea te a route that s ta rts within easyrange ofeach lu nchs top. This wouldrequire th e vehicle being trailered toth e desi gn ated special start poin tand being driven back to that pointafter lunch for tr ansporting back toPalmerston North. We favour thisop tion as it would provide the op portunity for a ll classes to mix at th elunch stop to the benefit of a ll entrants a nd the public a nd we like tothink that the lu n chs tops a re worthgoing to . But. again . trailering maybe thought to be a problem? Thea lternative is to create four short

Either choice s ho u ld mean thats low vete rans can participate in th eRally without bei ng d isadvantagedor feeling unwanted.
