Air Pacific briefed its staff of generous options available to them as it restructures and downsizes work force numbers. They include up to near half a year of severance pay, and continuing travel benefits on the national airline. Reports indicate that managing director/Chief Executive Officer Dave Pflieger began advising all Fiji staff of the extensive voluntary staff reduction programme. Staff were apparently briefed that the loss-making national airline is restructuring to ensure it can return to sustainable profitability in the face of growing pressure from increasing fuel prices and competition from low-cost carriers such as Virgin/Pacific Blue and Jetstar. Officials were not available for comments. But as reported earlier, Mr Pflieger appears focused on rebuilding the company to ensure lower costs, better customer service and industry best practices. Air Pacific has apparently noted that because of the critical nature of their roles, pilots and engineers are not eligible to apply for these voluntary release programmes. The company, which has already eliminated 20 per cent of its senior management positions in this restructure, is believed to have offered three options to its Fiji staff. 1: Early Retirement Programme for employees 50 years and over, who have a minimum of 10 years of service to Air

Pacific. Applications accepted for this programme will receive the equivalent of 24 weeks (approximately six months) of severance pay; payment for any accrued annual leave; payment for any long service leave earned but not yet taken; retiree travel benefits and continuation of medical insurance for six months from the date of retirement. 2: A Voluntary Separation Programme for employees who have three years or more of service. Applicants accepted will receive their choice of the better of two options: (a) The opportunity to permanently separate from Air Pacific with the equivalent of 24 weeks (approximately six months) of severance pay, payment for any accrued annual leave, payment for any long service leave earned and two ID90 travel passes for the employee and eligible family members per year for five years from the date of separation, and; (b) Whatever payout would be required in the case of redundancy set out in their employment contract or collective bargaining agreement 3. Redundancies. While the company hopes to reduce the number of involuntary job reductions, a number of additional roles and positions are expected to be permanently eliminated. The invitation to apply for these voluntary separation programmes is apparently open until May 30. It is believed the company hopes to finalise all applications and advise each applicant on the status of their application by June 13.

concerns that elections will not be held. But Mr Kubuabola said “real progress” was being made towards preparing a new constitution and electing a new government.Fiji had received a lot of international backing and encouragement for the planned reforms, especially from Indonesia, which would be assisting in election planning, the minister said.Brij Lal, a professor of pacific history

at Australian National University in Canberra, said Fiji’s military regime was becoming increasingly frustrated at Australia’s lack of engagement.“With so little progress, Australia has stepped right back but Fiji’s regime very much wants that engagement,” Professor Lal said.“Kubuabola is slinging mud out of frustration that Canberra refuses to engage while the country remains in this terrible state of limbo.”

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will be invited to lead Fiji’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) team to the NCD High Level meeting in New York in September. He is also going to be approached to become the NCD Champion for Fiji. Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma confirmed that the invitation for the high-level New York meeting will come from the United Nations and the World Health Organisation. The New York meeting is a follow-up to the recent WHO NCD Summit in Russia, which Dr Sharma attended. The Russia summit agreed that political leaders need to be involved in the fight against NCDs, with the New York meeting planned as the first ‘get together’ where leaders will be asked to lead the fight against NCDs in their respective countries. “There needs to be a strong political and social will regionally to continue the fight against Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs),” Dr Sharma said. “We need to have leaders who can become NCD champions. We are going to approach the Prime Minister to be the Fiji champion, similar to the role played by the President for the HIV/AIDS programme.” Dr Sharma said there needed to be a united campaign against NCDs. Figures recorded by the Ministry showed the battle cannot be won without a united front. Dr Sharma said in Fiji, just under 20 per cent of the population were patients of hypertension. “Sixteen per cent of the population are

FIjI PM TO lEAd NCd MEETINg IN NEw YORk

diabetic and do not care for themselves. Only 50 per cent know of their conditions and 10 per cent are in adequate control. “Despite, the provision of medication, advice on active lifestyles with diet, exercise and advice on reduction of alcohol, tobacco, and national statistics show that we are not progressing. Individuals continue to deny that they are suffering from diabetes and resort to all sorts of traditional measures without results. “Too many patients continue to fool health care providers by turning up to clinics and lying about their control of sugar. Some alter their records,” he said. “Point taken that the clinics are large and busy. Patients want universal cover and free medication.” He said kidney end stage disease is only cared for by dialysis and transplants. Dialysis in Fiji has been provided by the Kidney Foundation of Fiji (KFOF). The Government grants to KFOF are intended for use on the poor patients for a three-month period with a view to progressing them to renal transplant if they can afford it overseas. He said people should eat in moderation, locally-grown food low in fats and oils. “Exercise regularly, plant your own vegetables, root crops and fruit in your backyard gardens. Reduce your grog, alcohol intake and stop smoking tobacco products,” he said. “As a nation we’re becoming obese, physically unhealthy and developing hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The complications of these diseases lead us to end up with kidney and heart diseases. We are dying prematurely,” Dr Sharma said.

PEOPlE OF FIjI HAS SUPPORT FOR THE gOVERNMENT

Fiji’s Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the people of Fiji have shown a willingness to embrace and support the Government. He made the comments in a sent address to the dual citizenship Seminar in Sydney and Melbourne. The PM said the reforms taking place in Fiji were all part of the Strategic Framework for Change.“The Strategic Framework for Change sets out the path of legal, constitutional, economic and social change for a fair, just and modern Fiji - not just for now but for the years to come,” said Bainimarama.“My Government is undertaking steps to modernize Fiji’s laws, bringing about gender and social parity.”“We have implemented comprehensive laws against domestic violence. We have child welfare laws which protect children against abuse. We are in the process of removing red tape that has led to inefficiencies and corruption. Importantly, we have adopted a Crimes decree that has zero tolerance for corruption.”He also said that the Strategic Framework for Change was aimed at developing the economy and attracting investors.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola visited Fiji’s High Commission in London and met with staff of the mission on May 3. While in London he also met with Amitav Banerji, who took office as Director of Political Affairs in January 2009 and is the chief political adviser to the Secretary-General and is responsible for managing the Commonwealth’s political activity. This was also Ratu Inoke’s first official visit to the High Commission in London, and during his visit he discussed with

RATU INOkE’S lONdON VISIT mission staff the needs and priorities of the mission, and ways in which it could proactively seek to achieve its objectives. The minister took the opportunity to also brief mission staff on developments in Fiji that will guide their work including an update on the Roadmap to Democracy and the Strategic Framework for Change. The Fiji High Commission in London is accredited to the United Kingdom, Israel, the Holy See, Egypt, and Germany, as well as the International Sugar Organisation and the International Maritime Organisation.

“The first important step of the Strategic Framework for Change is focused on the growth of the economy through infrastructure development and agricultural output, productivity and investments.”“We have made it easier to do business in Fiji by creating an investor friendly and conducive environment, as exemplified by this dual citizenship initiative.”“The Government is now providing direct assistance to the poor and marginalized, as well as tangible assistance to our school children, who represent our brightest hope for the future,” said Bainimarama.Bainimarama added the MSG summit had helped Fiji to strengthen regional ties.“We have also enhanced our regional ties with our Melanesian brothers and sisters by successfully hosting the 18th MSG Summit a few weeks ago. We are working in collaboration with a number of countries with the aim of sustainable peace, justice, dignity and respect for all.”“In all of these reforms, the people of Fiji have shown a willingness to embrace and support the Government, including the announcement of the dual citizenship initiative,” added Bainimarama.

The Independent Legal Service Commission (ILSC) office has confirmed that disbarred lawyer Dr Muhammad Shamsud-Dean Sahu Khan has complied with all the requirements of his penalty handed to him by Justice John Connors earlier this month. With his compliance of the orders, the ILSC says the President of the Fiji Football Association was handed back his passport on Tuesday and is free to travel.Dr Khan is expected to attend football’s world governing body’s (FIFA) 61st Annual Congress in Zurich, Switzerland later this month. One of the orders given to Dr Sahu Khan by Justice Connors was that he pays Sashi Kiran - the applicant who filed a complaint against him and local lawyers, Mehboob Raza and Vipul Mishra - a total of $120,478.Justice Connors had ordered Dr Sahu Khan to pay the said amount within 28 days after his sentencing on May 4.Dr Sahu Khan was also found guilty of professional

misconduct along with Raza and Mishra who were also slapped with hefty fines. The ILSC office says Mishra and Raza have yet to comply with their orders and have until June 5th to do so.Meanwhile, two separate applications of charges against Dr Sahu Khan have been filed by the office of the Chief Registrar.State lawyer, Virisila Lidise says they’ve submitted one application of professional misconduct by Dr. Sahu Khan and while another application has been submitted in which he faces a total of 11 charges.“One count is against his law firm (Sahu Khan and Sahu Khan) while 10 of the charges is against him personally,” Lidise reported. The trial for the 11 charges will be heard between July 14 and July 22.

MAHENdRA PATEl ANd TEVITA MAU REFUSEd BAIl PENdINg APPEAlConvicted Motibhai Group owner Mahendra Patel and former Post Fiji Managing Director Tevita Peni Mau have had their application for bail while waiting for appeal to be heard, have been refused by Court of Appeal judge Justice William Marshall.Justice Marshall ruled against Patel and Mau’s application for bail while they await the outcome of the appeal against their prison sentences of 12 and 9 months for charges of office abuse. However, Justice Marshall did grant the two men leave to appeal against their conviction and sentences. In his ruling, Justice Marshall said that submissions made by Patel’s lawyer that he needed bail for medical treatment overseas did not affect his ruling in not allowing bail for the 71 year-old.In reference to Mau’s application for bail, Justice Marshall also said this was a case where bail pending appeal should not be granted.Mau and Patel’s appeal session will be held between August 30 and September 30 this year.Meanwhile, an application for the recusal of Justice Marshall has been filed by the prosecution in this matter. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has confirmed the filing of the application.FICAC says the application seeks Justice Marshall to abstain from participation in the bail application pending Appeal, the Appeal hearing and any future matters arising out of the trial of FICAC vs Tevita Peni Mau and Mahendra Motibhai Patel.

COMMITTEE MEETS FOR dUkE OF EdINBURgH AwARd The Duke of Edinburgh Awards national executive committee led by the Ministry of Youth and Sports director Ms Makereta Sauturaga met for the first time at the Tanoa Hotel in Suva. This was to discuss details of awards for youths in Fiji this year. The committee consists of representatives from the Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Education, Fiji Girl Guides Association, Young Peoples Department in Davuilevu, Foundation of the People of the South Pacific and other stakeholders.Senior youth officer Sakiusa Regu updated the committee on the awards.“One hundred and thirty-one countries around the world participate annually in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards of which 11 countries fall within the Asia/Pacific Regions,” Mr Regu said.“This is an international award for young people and ‘challenging young people everywhere’ is the international strap line this year.”Mr Regu said this year they would organize a gold event for students and they would also be sending two representatives to the international world meet in Kenya.

“We are glad that we are able to convene this first meeting for the committee,” he said. “It is an important committee that we oversee the Duke of Edinburgh program. In this first meeting is about information sharing with members before we progress in terms of the running of the committee so that they are well versed with the program.“So the intention is for members to know each other and to understand the background of the Duke program.“The program basically looks at young people between 14 to 25 years-old” he said. There are three levels of awards: • Bronze• Silver • Gold“We’ve been encouraging young people to start with the bronze program before they move on to silver and gold awards,” he said.“Really it’s a voluntary program for individuals to really develop their potential as a young person.”Last year the program in Fiji was sponsored by Amalgamated Telecom.

MARkETINg CONTROlS OF FOOdS FOR INFANTS ANd YOUNg CHIldREN Manufacturers, distributors and retail outlets of foods marketed for infants and young children have until the end of May to comply with the Marketing Controls Regulations 2010. The Marketing Controls (Foods for Infants and Young Children) Regulations 2010 promote and protect breastfeeding and adequate nutrition for children from birth to five years. The Marketing Controls is regulated under the Food Safety Act 2003.The regulations apply to products imported into, packed in, or produced and processed in Fiji for domestic distribution and consumption or export/re-export.Maximum penalty for an offence specified in Section 66 (3) of the Food Safety Act

2003 is a fine of $50,000 or imprisonment for 10 years or both. Marketing Controls Regulations 2010 came into effect May 1st last year and a grace period until end of May this year was given for compliance. The Ministry of Health promotes exclusive breastfeeding which is breast milk only for the first six months of a baby’s life. The Marketing Controls 2010 prohibit advertising and promotions of breast milk substitutes. Substitutes include infant formula, follow-up formula, complementary foods, or relevant feeding accessories. Offering or giving any gift, prize, discount coupon or any free item, having special

or prominent displays that encourage the sale of breast milk substitutes is prohibited under the regulations.According to the Marketing Controls Regulations 2010, a breast milk substitute product can only be recommended after the age of six months. Some stores in Fiji are marketing formula milk from birth and food for infants four to six months which does not comply with regulations.Exceptions would be ready-to-use therapeutic food or milk for special medical purposes or dietary requirements used in the management of acute malnutrition in children. The Marketing Controls 2010 specify text and text size on the containers or

labels of infant formula and follow-up formula regarding breastfeeding and food preparation. Pictures of infants or any graphic that idealises the use of infant formula is prohibited.Full cream milk in powder or in liquid milk form should only be sold if the container or labels contain the words. This product should not be used as an infant’s sole source of nourishment. The National Food and Nutrition Centre together with the Consumer Council, Dietetics and Nutrition Services and Nursing Services support the Marketing Control Regulations 2010 and its monitoring and enforcement by the Environmental Health Services.

CASSAVA MARkET FOR USAGovernment has identified a market in the United States of America for cassava export. This is part of the Government’s efforts to help farmers and boost the agricultural sector. Government is also shifting its focus to other agro-products, not only dalo. Fiji Agro Marketing Company Limited chairman Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga said they signed the deal with the US-based company last week. “We are awaiting our first consignment and details will be released once we send that consignment across,” he said. Colonel Tikoitoga said they have been concerned with the non-availability of a dalo market. Dalo is one of Fiji’s main agricultural export products. “We want to balance it and focus on other agro-products,” Colonel Tikoitoga said. “Government is committed to securing more markets for our farmers and we are seeking all avenues to meet the local demand.” He said more dalo had been wasted because of the unavailability of a market. Meanwhile, Fiji Agro Marketing has now come under the Prime Minister’s Office in their bid to revive the industry.

National airline Air Pacific is reportedly planning to announce extensive and unprecedented voluntary reduction programmes for employees later this week. This will be part of the company’s continuing efforts to restructure and revitalise an airline that is critical to the nation’s economy and tourism development. Sources indicate that the voluntary programmes will provide incentives for employees to retire early or voluntarily separate from the company in the next few weeks. This is apparently an effort to shrink the size of Air Pacific’s workforce and reduce the overall number of redundancies that are expected sometime this year. Air Pacific officials declined to comment on this report. But Managing Director/CEO Dave

AIR PACIFIC PlANNINg

TO dOwN SIzEPflieger has been spearheading extensive efforts to return Air Pacific to sustainable profitability since taking charge one year ago. Based on prior interviews and reports, Mr. Pflieger appears focused on rebuilding the company to ensure better customer service and value, lower costs, and industry best practices. It is believed that the company’s need to restructure is even more pressing given increasing fuel prices and more competition from nimble low-cost carriers Virgin/Pacific Blue and Qantas-owned Jetstar. This expected new initiative follows the major restructuring of loss-making domestic and regional airline Pacific Sun. Efforts there included redundancies and absorbing many duplicate Pacific Sun roles into Air Pacific.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa has had a demanding and successful month picking up on the tourist industry’s start of the peak season. It included media hosting, numerous weddings and contributions towards the local community. “It was a progressive month for the resort,” said Sanjeshni Nand, the property’s marketing executive. The hotel seems to be tracking well for the first quarter of the year, hosting a total of six weddings for the month of April itself. “The weddings team tailored special events for six couples for the month. According to Miss Nand, the first event was the post visit for the Society of American Travel Writers. “This group consisted of professional high-end writers, journalists and photographers who visited Fiji to capture information on travel destinations, facilities and services,” she said. Korean Air photographer Benjamin Crawford was the second media personality was hosted at the five star property. “Mr Crawford, who is a commissioned

Cabinet has approved the Liquor Act (Amendment) Decree 2011. Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The Liquor Act 2006 provides for a liquor licensing authority in every division in Fiji. The licensing authority is known as the Divisional Liquor Licensing Authority (DLLA) and one DLLA exists for each of the four divisions in the country. A DLLA issues licenses for liquor sales. The Attorney-General said the Liquor Act (Amendment) Decree 2011 amended the Act by removing the requirement for the appointment of a magistrate as chairperson for a DLLA. “It empowers the Minister to appoint any person to be

The Solicitor General or his nominee can render legal advice to the authority as a member.” The Attorney-General said the Decree empowered the divisional commissioners to appoint a nominee to represent the Commissioner on the authority. He said the Decree also removed the 6-year limitation on membership of the authority thus allowing a member to serve for as long as warranted by the Minister or until the member resigns.

photographer for the Korean Air Magazine called the Morning Calm, visited the resort. His focus was on local cuisine and spas that we have in Fiji,” Miss Nand said. In April, the resort staff and management also paid another visit to Malomalo Primary School, presenting children with gifts donated by resort guests and the incentive group. The resort made two significant staff announcements with the addition of a new director of sales. “InterContinental Fiji has now welcomed Lisa Rangitutia as a director of sales,” Miss Nand said. “Lisa joins the team from The Lancemore

Group based in Melbourne, where she was the director of sales - MICE. She has worked in other tourism organisations which include the Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Rydges Hotels and Resorts and IHG.” In a second appointment announcement by the resort, Takahisa Erikawa holds the position of chef de cuisine. Mr Erikawa joins the resort from Japan where he worked for the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Narita. His career included stints at InterContinental Hotel Wellington, Crowne Plaza Hotel Christchurch, Octagon Trinity and The Palazzo del Marinaio.

Cabinet has approved the introduction of three new vaccines to the Fiji immunization programme. The new vaccines are the pneumococcal vaccine, and rotavirus vaccine for children under five years, and the HPV vaccine for 12-14-year-old girls.Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma. The Minister said that immunization is a key public health intervention in protecting humans against harmful infections or diseases.“It is considered one of the most important cost effective public health interventions for the protection of children and women’s health contributing to the attainment of MDG 4 and 5.”Dr Sharma said that Fijian children are currently protected from 9 serious infectious diseases, namely measles, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough),

new vaCCInes approved for fIjIpoliomyelitis, tetanus, rubella, tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis B and Hemophilus influenza type B (Hib) in its immunization schedule. The Minister said that government would foot the bill for vaccines within the country. “The Government fully finances the cost of these vaccines at $F1.2M annually through the Vaccine Independence Initiative, a revolving fund managed by the United Nations’ Children’s Fund (UNICEF).”Dr Sharma also said that Fiji has been recorded as having one of the highest rates of this disease with 14% of cancer deaths in women in this nation attributed to cervical cancer. “Additionally the human papilloma virus has been seen as a key contributing factor to the development of cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine is now being used globally for its prevention.”The Minister said that the HPV vaccine was introduced to the Fijian population for

The increasing leptospirosis fatality count in Fiji has alarmed health officials who are calling on all to take proper precautions. This after the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported another three deaths last week. The MOH has confirmed that altogether seven people have died so far at Lautoka Hospital due to the influx of the disease. It states the total number of people affected by leptospirosis now stands at 45 compared to 42 last week.Ministry spokesman, Peni Namotu confirmed that all deaths have been at the Lautoka Hospital. He said currently 18 patients suffering from

girls aged between 12-14 years old in 2008 on a limited trial basis and this was made possible through a donation by Merk, a pharmaceutical company. He said that there were minimal untoward effects seen in its introduction. The Minister said that although the pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines will not impact substantially in averting mortality rates their impacts will be mainly on marked reduction in morbidity or ill-health in children as these diseases are significant causes of presentations to health facilities.“Additionally the Pneumococcal vaccine has also been trialed in the Fijian population and has not shown any adverse or untoward events in the use of these vaccines.”He stated that all three vaccines are safe and effective and have been widely used in both developed and developing countries globally.

Fiji will soon have its own man made fresh water pearl farms. This has been confirmed by the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni.Dr Luveni said they are in talks with Chinese investors in setting up fresh water pearl farms in Fiji by the end of this year. She said the idea triggered during her visit to China where they saw fresh water pearls being cultured in man made ponds beside individual houses.Dr Luveni said the fresh water pearl farming will target the women of the country for self income generation.“We are currently looking at women landowners for fresh water farming and once we get the issue of lands sorted out than we can move ahead with the idea.” she said.Dr Luveni added that if we get ample women landowners showing interest than we will call the Chinese investors to carry out feasibility study.

Amendments made to the 2008 Water Resource Promulgation have been approved by the state following submissions made by Minister for Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.According to a statement released by government, Sayed-Khaiyum said the amended promulgation with further explanation provided through the application of the tax rates. The amended now reads; “For the avoidance of doubt, where a person or business extracts 3,500,000 litres of water or above in a month, that person or business shall pay water resource tax at the rate of 15 cents for every litre of water extracted in that month and not only for every litre extracted over and above 3,500,000 litres.”Sayed-Khaiyum said the Decree also amends the Water Resource Promulgation 2008 by removing the 15% wastage tax allowance which currently exists thereby mandating that all water that is extracted from the underground water table is taxable.

Fiji’s men and women of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces 1st Battalion serving in Baghdad are doing a difficult job in a dangerous environment and holding Fiji’s name high.In thanking them, Fijian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson said they were meeting standards of excellence expected of them. Ambassador Thomson said he had heard nothing but praise from UN representatives in New York and Iraq for the battalion’s conduct of duties.Ambassador Thomson was in Iraq from May 3 to 7 visiting the 1st Battalion, RFMF, at its Baghdad garrisons. The United Nations Mission to Iraq (UNAMI) is protected by the UN Guard Unit (UNGU) made up of the 1st Battalion, at strength of 223 Fijians led by Colonel Netani Rika. Fiji’s Ambassador told UNGU he was in Iraq to show them the respect they deserved and to thank them on behalf of the Government and people of Fiji for their service. With the draw-down of US Forces from Iraq he said the United Nations had to increase its security services for UNAMI. Accordingly Ambassador Thomson said he was in Baghdad for talks with UNAMI officials and to take the opportunity to inspect UNGU conditions on the ground. The RFMF’s 1st Battalion has been in Iraq since 2004. It is tasked with guarding the facilities and personnel of the United Nations as they undertake their work of assisting the Iraqi people rebuild their nation after many decades of war.At an UNGU church service at Diwan Compound, Baghdad, on May 6, Ambassador Thomson told the gathering that for all Fijians, “It can be said with great national pride, that from just a few years after Fiji’s independence, UN peacekeeping has been central to Fiji’s foreign policy”. He said this has been so because, “Fiji is determined to play a positive role as a signatory to the United Nations Charter, and because small countries like ours depend on membership of the United Nations for our security, sovereignty and independence. Thus Fiji’s firm commitment to peacekeeping and peace-building around the world is a manifestation of Fiji’s trust in the multilateralism of the United Nations”.To date, Fiji’s peacekeepers have served in Angola, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cambodia, Croatia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Namibia, Rhodesia, Rwanda, Sinai, Solomon Islands, Somalia and Timor Leste. Two ancient hawksbill turtles thought to be 150-170 years old were rescued from a certain slow death on the Nuku’alofa waterfront by local conservationists who saw their plight and rallied local businesses for support to save them. All species of sea turtles are listed as

threatened or endangered in the world but the hawksbill sea turtles are on an IUCN red alert list of critically endangered species. Hawksbill turtles are relatively small sea turtles but it took five men to lift the exhausted pair onto the back of a truck,

after a settlement was reached with the Touliki-Ma’ufanga family that was selling them for food. The turtles were rushed off to a recovery immersion in the tanks of the fisheries department. Then, later in the day, three more very old sea turtles, including hawksbill and green turtles, were discovered at the home of the fisherman who had received them in an overnight shipment from Ha’apai. The turtles were all suffering from injuries, and bleeding from damaged shells after being dropped upside down and dragged on the ground. It is usual for fishermen to turn turtles upside down to keep them alive, while they try to find buyers. Turtle LadyJo Kupu, also known as Tonga’s “Turtle lady” said she had rescued over 600 turtles over the last six or seven years but the pair were among the largest she had ever seen. She believed they were females and that it was illegal to harvest them.Their great size meant they were very old, “they are probably between 150 and 170 years old,” she said.“They suffocate when they are upside down; they choke and drown on their own saliva.”

A MAKESHIFT outrigger canoe carrying six passengers, including children, has disappeared off the tiny Pacific island group of Kiribati. A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion has been searching seas around the atoll over the weekend since it was discovered the three-meter boat had gone missing last Friday. The group of two men, aged 19, and four girls aged 8, 9, 12 and 14, were on an expedition to collect palm leaves for roofing off the west coast of Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean.Their canoe, which was towing a smaller dinghy, was believed to have drifted out of a lagoon and into the open ocean. The Orion is searching an area of one thousand square nautical miles.Families of the young group will be hoping their children have the same fortune as the three teenagers from the tiny isle of Tokelau who survived 50 days at sea.The boys, two aged 15 and one 14, had gone in search of vodka but got lost, and were eventually found floating 1420km from their island home.Their home island of Atafu held memorial services in their absence.

A major drug bust in Cook Islands last week has resulted in the arrest and court appearances of 13 people in the capital, Rarotonga.Names of all the 13 individuals charged have been with-held until their next court appearances.Police Commissioner Maara Tetava says the 13 have been charged with various drugs and corruption-related offences. The media reports the list of offenders include a nightclub owner, a policewoman, a couple of restaurant workers, two public servants and a self-employed investigator. In a well-executed sting, Cook Islands Police conducted an operation that took a year and involved 11 officers from New Zealand. The Police Commissioner has warned the importation and distribution of drugs into the Cook Islands won’t be tolerated, nor will corruption among those public officials engaged in drug trafficking. The Crown Prosecution opposed bail for the 13 people charged saying police needed to finalize the charges and prevent offenders from influencing any potential witnesses. The drug raid found cannabis but Police are also looking at charges involving a Class A narcotic.

The B.C. government is putting the brakes on plans by ICBC to raise rates for drivers who rack up speeding tickets, run red lights or cause collisions. The provincially-owned insurance company said Wednesday it plans to overhaul its rate structure to reward safe drivers and punish those with traffic violations. The penalties would cover all moving violations, including unsafe passing, following too close, and running a red light. But the news was given a rough ride in the legislature later in the day, with NDP MLA John Horgan telling the

house, “Stop the highway robbery. End it before it starts.”Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Shirley Bond said she wanted to reassure B.C. drivers that the ICBC plan would only proceed if it was fair and reasonable.“I think I share the concerns that imply that even if you have a single speeding ticket you should be deemed a bad driver in British Columbia,” Bond said.Bond says she would have a “thorough discussion” with corporation officials before the increases would be allowed.Spokesman Mark Jan Vrem said earlier that the corporation has been listening to

motorists who say safe drivers should not have to pay the same rates as those with speeding tickets or those who’ve caused a couple of collisions.“We agree with those customers. It’s not fair to those customers with clean driving records. So we’re proposing these changes to the B.C. Utilities Commission,” said Jan Vrem.Minister questions thresholdBond said that ICBC should not just penalize problem drivers.“I do think British Columbians think if you are a better driver there potentially should be bigger benefits,” said Bond.If the commission approves the changes,

those with clean driving records will pay less and about one third of drivers will pay more.It won’t happen right away, but drivers are already being warned to slow down. Jan Vrem says the corporation wants to phase in the changes starting in 2014, but the new rates could be based on moving violations before that date.ICBC says the changes are not a cash grab and will be revenue neutral — claim critics are likely to challenge. Any rate increase would also be limited to about five or six per cent a year, he said.

Full cream milk powder and liquid milks sold in Fiji will soon have additional labels. This after the Ministry of Health’s implemented Marketing Controls Regulations 2010 draws closer to its enforcement date.Ministry spokesman, Peni Namotu said prior to the regulation, full cream milk in powder or in liquid milk form should only be sold if the container or labels containing the words: “This product should not be used as an infant’s sole source of nourishment”. Namotu said the Marketing Controls (Foods for Infants and Young Children) Regulations 2010 promote and protect breastfeeding and adequate nutrition for children from birth to five years. He said the National Food and Nutrition Centre together with the Consumer Council, Dietetics and Nutrition Services and Nursing Services support the Marketing Control Regulations 2010 and its monitoring and enforcement by the Environmental Health Service. He added that failure to place the necessary labels will result in fines of $50,000 or imprisonment for 10 years or both. The Marketing Controls Regulations 2010 came into effect last year on May 1 and a grace period until end of May this year was given for compliance.

A SHoCKING paparazzi photograph of a dying Princess diana is to be screened for the first time in a documentary about her fatal crash. Unlawful Killing, which will be shown at Cannes this week, is backed by actor Keith Allen and Mohammed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi died with Diana. The 90-minute film will include a graphic black-and-white close-up of Diana. It was taken moments after the Mercedes carrying the couple crashed in a Paris underpass. The distressing image, Diana’s blonde hair and features clearly visible, has never been publicly seen in the UK.It will be shown around the world but not in the UK, prompting Allen to say: “Pity, because at a time when the sugar rush of the Royal Wedding has been sending republicans into a diabetic coma, it could act as a welcome antidote.”Similar pictures shown to the Diana inquest jury had her face pixilated.Allen’s film is due to be screened amid a blaze of publicity at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday and Mr Fayed is reported to be travelling to the south of

The actions of photographers following the car were also cited.

Mr Fayed has accused Prince Philip of masterminding the 1997 crash in which Diana and Dodi died and even suggested Prince Charles was involved. He alleged the plot took place to stop the Princess marrying his Muslim son.Allen said Unlawful Killing was “not about a conspiracy before the crash, but a conspiracy after the crash”.

The banking industry has abandoned its legal fight over the mis-selling of payment protection insurance, paving the way for thousands of customers to get compensation. It follows a High Court ruling in April which forced banks to invite previous customers to lodge claims for mis-selling.The British Bankers’ Association met last Friday and abandoned plans to challenge the court’s decision. The climb-down comes after Britain’s biggest retail bank, Lloyds Banking Group, last week said it was pulling out of any further legal action and setting aside £3.2bn to compensate customers.Barclays has also announced it will pull out of the legal fight and has earmarked £1bn to pay claims.Barclays chief executive Bob Diamond

• Sickening and selfish murders on the rise •“He drove back, and ran... over the girl again” • “I was afraid of future trouble so I chose to kill her”

A motorist in China allegedly hit a six-year-old girl by accident, and then returned to his car and hit her again, in the latest suspected murder of a hit-and-run victim, state press reports. An accident in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, comes after a man was sentenced to death last month in China for fatally stabbing a woman after first hitting her with his car, the reporter said. The incidents, which often involve hit-and-run drivers, have led to hand-wringing over the moral standards in the nation, whose citizens have become increasingly brash following 30 years of booming economic growth. The killing in Fuzhou occurred as numerous witnesses watched in shock. The unnamed driver, seeing he had hit the six-year-old girl, returned to his car and hit her again.“He drove back, and ran the right front wheel over the girl again,” the local Strait Metropolitan Daily quoted witness Chen Yi as saying.“I was immediately so frightened that I closed my eyes. It was so horrible.”The girl was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, the report said. A police investigation is ongoing.Last month, 21-year-old music student Yao Jiaxin was sentenced to death in the northern city of Xian after confessing to hitting a woman on a bicycle and then stabbing her to death after he got out of the car.Yao said he killed her because that “peasant woman would be hard to deal with” in the aftermath of the accident, state press reports said.Yao’s case has sparked a national debate over China’s “rich second generation,” a group of youths raised during the boom whose morals have been called into question. In January the son of a senior police official, 23-year-old Li Qiming, was sentenced to six years in prison after a hit-and-run.In another incident, Tian Houbo, 21, was arrested for hitting a beggar on a roadside in southwest China’s Chongqing city in December and then returning to the scene and running over her again with his truck, the report said.“Since I killed a beggar, I didn’t think anyone would pay any attention to her,” Tian was quoted as telling the Chongqing Morning Post.

• Woman dies 10 minutes after returning from hospital • Rang an ambulance after pain, breathing difficulties • Taken to hospital twice but wasn’t seen by doctor • Autopsy found she had died from an enlarged heart

A woman who died 10 minutes after arriving home from hospital for the second time in a day was not even seen by a doctor, a coronial inquest has found. June Owen, 63, died after visiting Stawell Hospital. There was no doctor there, and the one on call decided not to come in to see her.Janice Campbell said it was shocking a doctor had not seen her mother, who was in pain and suffering breathing difficulties.Coronial findings made by magistrate Richard Pithouse last week – 18 months after the inquest – had left her family “confused”.

“It still leaves many questions unanswered, and it contains no recommendations on changes that need to be made to prevent this happening again,” Ms Campbell said.On the day of her death, Mrs Owen contacted Rural Ambulance Victoria four times, and was twice taken to Stawell Hospital. She first visited the hospital at 5pm on January 21, 2008 with abdominal pain, and a nurse gave her two Panadeine Forte tablets and sent her home.At 10.15pm, she again arrived by ambulance and a nurse phoned on-call doctor Briandha Jeremiah, who decided not to attend to examine her.Dr Jeremiah told the nurse to give her a pethidine injection, to relieve her pain, but the inquest heard conflicting reports on how long Mrs Owen should be monitored afterwards.Mrs Owen was released from hospital 40 minutes after her injection.“A taxi took her home. She travelled home alone. It appears that five minutes later, Mrs Owen entered her bedroom,” the report said.

Her partner noticed she was breathing heavily, and five minutes later he returned to find her dead.An autopsy found Mrs Owen, who suffered heart and lung disease, had died from an enlarged heart.

A 1.46m-tall Bronx woman claims a New York City job counsellor got her fired from her gig as a Parks Department janitor in Queens because he thought she was too short to do the job. Sandra Petersen, 51, claims she never had a problem at work until she asked Counsellor Louis Marchi about switching her assignment, the media said.“I could do the job,” Ms Petersen told the reporter. “The managers really liked me and know I worked hard.”Ms Peterson landed the six-month, subsidised city job in June, a position that was later extended by several months. But she hoped to work as a home health aide, and wanted to discuss the change with Mr Marchi.“He said, ‘You’re too short. Are you sure you’re working for Parks?’” Ms Petersen recalled from their first meeting. In a lawsuit filed last week against the city and Marchi, Ms Petersen claims the counsellor got her booted from Parks. She is now seeking $12 million in damages for alleged discrimination.“I lost sleep. I lost appetite. I was crying,” she recalled. “I was going out of my mind. I felt humiliated.”The city Law Department had no immediate comment.

Apple has unseated Google as the world’s biggest brand, bringing an end to four years of dominance by the search giant. The value of Apple’s brand has increased by 84 per cent over the last 12 months, leap-frogging over Google which has been rated as the world’s largest brand for four consecutive years, according to global research agency Millward Brown.Apple’s meteoric rise was driven by the word’s infatuation with the iPad, the first genuinely successful tablet computer, and continuing growth in its iPhone and iPod brands.According to the survey the value of Apple’s brand grew to $US153.5 billion while Google’s brand slipped 2 per cent to $US111.4 billion.Google was the only brand in the top ten to see its value slip.Other major brands to make the top 10 included IBM, McDonald’s, Microsoft and Coca-Cola.The brand valuations are calculated by Millward Brown Optimor, part of the WPP Group, which has seen the valuation of Apple rise by 859 per cent since 2006.

4. Pack Your ShovelYour shovel is one of the most important pieces of camping equipment you’ll take with you. You can use it to level the ground for your tent, control your camp fire, fill in ruts, and countless other things. Don’t forget it!

Camping is my favorite activity and when it comes to camping you have all kinds of choices. You can tent camp, base camp, canoe camp, RV camp, tent trailer camp and even back yard camp. No matter how much camping you do or which type of camping you do there is always something new you can learn. Here are some camping tips:

World News

1. Get OrganizedOrganize your gear before you go. Organize your gear so that the stuff you will need first and most often can easily be accessed. So for example your tent will be the first thing you need when you reach the campground so put it right at the front where you can grab it quickly and easily.

2. Choose a CampsiteWhere ever you will be staying you need to choose a campsite. Know vehicle patterns in the campgrounds, which sites are sheltered from wind and rain, which sites get the sun. Then choose a site that works for you.3. First Aid KitRemember to pack your first aid kit with your camping gear. Everyone in your camping group needs to know where the kit is and how to use it. Leaving it locked in the vehicle isn’t very smart because you won’t be able to access it in a hurry. A better plan is to have a designated spot in the tent.

5. Choose The Right TentThe type of tent you choose will depend on how many of you are going camping, what type of weather is expected, and how long you are going for. The bigger the tent the better. The extra space allows for you to relax and sprawl out to read your favorite book, or have a game of cards.

missing B.C. man’s Family hopeFul

Members of the Chretien family are vowing to stay in the U.S. until their missing patriarch, Albert, is found.“We’re uncomfortable leaving a loose end and we all want some closure here,” said Lorraine Hoving, sister-in-law of Rita Chretien, who was rescued after being stranded for seven weeks in remote Nevada wilderness.Speaking from the Twin Falls, Idaho, hospital where staff say Rita of Penticton, B.C., is making remarkable progress in her recovery, Hoving said the family, including Rita, have been preparing for what authorities suspect: that her husband, who hasn’t been seen since March 22 when he ventured from their mud-stuck van to fetch help, did not survive.“She’s prepared herself as much as you can - this is a woman of strength. She’s been out seven weeks, so she’s already prepared herself that Albert may be in heaven already. At the same time you never want to give up hope - look what happened to Rita,” she said.Search and rescue crews from Elko County Sheriff’s Department continued combing the lands between Rita and Alberta’s van and his likely destination, Mountain City, about 35 km away.Meanwhile, staff at St. Luke’s Magic Valley hospital said Rita’s condition continues to improve and her diet has

B.C. smokers oFFered Free paTChes, gum

B.C. smokers who want to quit can get 12 weeks worth of nicotine gum or patches starting in September.Premier Christy Clark announced the program in Vancouver Monday, making good on another one of the promises made in her campaign for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party. The program will cover prescription anti-smoking therapies through PharmaCare. The government estimates it will cost between $15 million and $25 million annually, depending on how many smokers take advantage of it.The B.C. health ministry estimates that 6,000 people die each year from cancer, heart disease and other smoking-related illness. The cost to the B.C. economy is approximately $2.3 billion annually, including $605 million for direct health-

care costs.Clark said the province also collects $682 million in revenue from tobacco taxes, and some of that should be used to help people break their tobacco addiction. The health ministry will work withthe B.C. Lung Association, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon, the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. Pharmacy Association, pharmaceutical manufacturers, health authorities and the B.C. Medical Association on the method to implement the program.“Quitting cold turkey can be tough, and quit smoking aids can help people not

only quit but also prevent them having a relapse and starting to smoke again,” said Scott McDonald, CEO of the B.C. Lung Association.

This page contains basic information. If you are concerned about your health, you should consult a doctor.

EAT A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET AND STAY ACTIvE

The key to a healthy balanced diet is not to ban or omit any foods or food groups but to balance what you eat by consuming a variety of foods from each food group in the right proportions for good health. The five food groups on the eatwell plate are: Fruit and vegetablesThese should make up about a third of your daily diet and can be eaten as part of every meal, as well as being the first choice for a snack. You should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Research suggests this can help to protect against cancer, obesity and various chronic diseases such as heart disease. This is because of the unique package of nutrients and plant compounds they contain.

Bread, rice, potatoes and pastaThis food group should also make up about a third of your diet and contains the starchy carbohydrates that are the body’s main source of energy. When selecting products from this food group, choose unrefined carbohydrates over those that have been refined, as they will contain the whole of the grain. Wholegrain foods are rich in fibre and

Milk and dairy foodsThese should be eaten in moderation because of their high saturated fat content, but they’re an important source of calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Choose low-fat or reduced-fat versions.

Foods and drinks high in fat and/or sugarThis group makes up the smallest section on the eatwell plate and includes foods that should only be eaten sparingly because, although they’re an important energy source, they contain very few nutrients and are often known as ‘empty calories’.Foods from this group are high in unhealthy components such as saturated fat, trans fatty acids, sugar and salt – all of which are associated with an increased risk of developing certain diseases. They should only be eaten as occasional treats, or to increase the palatability of other important foods (such as olive oil on salads, a scraping of spread on bread, or a sprinkling of sugar on some tart fruits).

How to eat a balanced dietEat a variety of foods to obtain all of the essential nutrientsToo much as well as too little can be bad for you – balance is required

other nutrients that have many health benefits, and people who consume wholegrains seem to have a reduced risk of certain cancers, diabetes and coronary heart disease. The final third of the eatwell plate is made up of three groups containing foods that need to be consumed in smaller proportions than the other two principal categories. These food groups also contain nutrients essential to our diet, so it’s important not to leave them out altogether.

Meat, fish, eggs and beansThis food group includes both animal and plant sources of protein, which is a major functional and structural component of all cells. Protein provides the body with between 10 and 15 per cent of its dietary energy, and is needed for growth and repair.

Everyone’s plate will look slightly different as we all have different requirements depending on our body’s shape and size, and our levels of activity.Maintaining a healthy, balanced dietThe Food Standards Agency’s eight tips for eating well are:• Base meals on starchy foods • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables • Eat more fish • Cut down on saturated fat and sugar • Try to eat less salt - no more than 6g a day • Get active and try to be a healthy weight • Drink plenty of water • Don’t skip breakfastPortion sizeIn recent years, portions have been gradually getting bigger with the introduction of king-size chocolate bars, bigger bags of crisps and super-sized meals. Larger packets and plates can encourage us to eat greater quantities of food, which increases our energy intake. Studies have found that consuming additional food doesn’t increase your sense of fullness, so think of ‘down-sizing’ rather than ‘super-sizing’ for most foods, except fruit and vegetables.Energy densityThis is the amount of stored energy in food. Just 1g of fat provides nine calories, which is more than double the calories in 1g of protein or carbohydrate. This means you can feel fuller on fewer calories if you choose the right foods, and in the long term you’re less likely to gain weight.Healthy living Food is there to enjoy, which is often forgotten amid all the media hype surrounding various food items. Just remember to keep a check on portion size and energy density. Food habits change slowly, but• try new foods • join a local cookery club to boost your culinary confidence • have a positive attitude about food – it’s one of life’s pleasuresExercise helps to maintain your body weight by balancing your energy intake (food eaten) with energy output (exercise). Take small steps if you’re new to exercise - use the stairs instead of the lift at work, get off the bus one stop early and walk the rest of the way, or try to exercise with a friend.

Canadian Tire To Buy Forzani group

home for his 12,000 employees.Canadian Tire will operate Forzani as a separate business unit.“In the 34 years I have been there, I had several conversations with people, some were serious, some were in passing, some were fishing expeditions,” Mr. Forzani said. “But this one turned out to be pretty serious.“I am not sure that there is a good time to leave, as much the right time is when all things are right.”Mr. Forzani said he returns often to that first store, now a Thai sub shop next to Western Canada High School near the city’s downtown.Growth happened quickly. Within five years he was running 23 locations across Alberta and Saskatchewan. One of the early stores, opened on 4th Street S.W. in 1977, looks the same as it did in its early days and remains a favourite with Calgary’s running crowd.Further expansion came with the acquisition of Sport Chek International Ltd. in 1991,

Forzani group ltd. Chairman of the Board and founder John Forzani.

Canada News

Hogarth’s Sport and Ski in 1992, and Sports Experts in 1994.Born and raised in Calgary, Mr. Forzani obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University, but returned to play professional football for seven years and remains active as a co-owner of the club.He said he made many mistakes along his retail career, including not knowing much at the beginning about basics such as inventory management and advertising. After working many 100-hour weeks, he now plans to spend more time in Palm Springs and Kelowna, where he has second homes. He remains a big supporter of people who take risks.“I have risked everything many, many times in building this business,” he said. “It’s very stimulating and very rewarding when you risk everything and you have success. And if you don’t, you start over again, and away you go.”

Forzani Group risked it all ‘many times’In 1974, when John Forzani started Forzani’s Locker Room on Calgary’s 17th Ave. with $9,000, most people’s idea of a lunch break was two Martinis with a pack of smokes. But Mr. Forzani and his investors — his brothers, Joe and Tom, and his best friend, Bas Bark, all professional football players with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League — saw the potential for a new business when they couldn’t find athletic footwear anywhere in Canada, at a time the fitness craze was beginning to take hold.“We said, [we could have] this little store, with products that real athletes wanted to have, and who knew it would grow so much?” Mr. Forzani, 64, said in an interview Monday. That 1,100-square-foot store, where Mr. Forzani did a lot of the work and his late mom, Audrey, worked the till for free, grew into Canada’s largest sporting goods retailer. It was sold to Canadian Tire Corp. Monday for $771-million.The sale marks the end of an era for one of Calgary’s most cherished business icons, the grandson of Italian immigrants and a philanthropist associated with a variety of causes, including the Forzani Mothers’ Day Run and Walk, organized in five cities across the country. It began in Calgary 30 years ago to raise funds for health programs, equipment and charities in honour of his mom, who passed away last month at 96.Mr. Forzani said Canadian Tire made an unsolicited, one-page offer in February at a time his company was focused on growth from annual revenue of about $1.4-billion and 550 retail outlets across Canada. The deal was successfully concluded after long negotiations.Mr. Forzani, who owns about 5% of the stock (down from 70% at startup) and is the chairman of the company, said he feels good about the sale because the price is fair and it involves a stable Canadian company in a complementary business that will be a good

Charges of mischief and uttering threats have been approved against a union researcher for an incident involving Vancouver-Mount Pleasant MLA Jenny Kwan.A special prosecutor has approved charges against Kimberly Burton Pollock, a researcher with the United Steelworkers. Pollock was scheduled to appear in court in Vancouver on May 12.At the legislature Monday, Kwan declined to comment on the case, or whether it is related to her leading role in the ouster of former NDP leader Carole James last fall. One of the incidents is alleged to have taken place on Dec. 1, 2010, the day Kwan released a letter criticizing James at length and calling for a leadership review.A second incident took place April 1 of this year.A statement from the Attorney General’s ministry says the charges relate to alleged threats of death or bodily harm against Kwan, her husband and children. The media reported that the mischief charge relates to feces thrown on the roof of Kwan’s home in East Vancouver.

Just for Kids

Subtraction

Infants will pass a thick, green-black stool (meconium) in the first 24 to 36 hours of life. As feedings become established, the stool becomes more yellow-green. Most infants have stools daily, but some have them only every two to three days. If that infant is feeding well, has soft stools and isn’t uncomfortable, she’s probably not constipated.Formula-fed babies tend to have drier, less frequent stools than breastfed babies. Breastfed babies are rarely constipated. Just after birth it seems they have a stool every time they eat. But after a few weeks the pattern can change to a stool every two or three days or even once a week. If the baby is not uncomfortable and the stools are soft, there’s probably no problem.Even if your baby strains to pass a stool, he may not be constipated. Babies often grunt, become red in the face and pull up their legs when passing a stool. If it’s soft and passes without pain, these behaviors are normal. If your infant appears to be having difficulty, curling the knees up against the baby’s chest might help.If your baby’s diet changes or he’s sick, the stool pattern may also vary. If stools become drier, try adding a

little water or juice to the infant’s diet. For older babies, adding fruit or vegetables can make stools less dry. For a formula-fed infant, ask your healthcare provider about changing the formula. When your infant hasn’t passed a stool in the usual time and seems uncomfortable, try lubricating a rectal thermometer and holding it in the rectum for three to five minutes. Inserting a small piece of glycerine suppository may also help. If it doesn’t, or you keep having to do this, consult your baby’s healthcare provider. True constipation can be a sign of a more serious illness or an obstruction.Never give an infant an enema or a laxative unless your healthcare provider advises this. These treatments can cause life-threatening shifts in a young infant’s fluid/electrolyte balance. When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider* Your infant is feeding poorly or vomiting.* There is abdominal swelling.* Your baby is in pain.* There is blood in your child’s stool.* Home remedies don’t help.

Rashes in the diaper area are fairly common. Most are due to wetness, friction and irritation from urine and stool. Your baby may be sensitive to a specific brand of disposable diaper or laundering method on cloth diapers. Neither kind of diaper is better at preventing diaper rash.If your baby gets a rash, the key to treatment is keeping the diaper area clean and dry. Leave his bottom exposed to air as much as possible. Cleanse the diaper area with warm water, using a mild soap after a bowel movement, if necessary (rinse well). While diaper wipes rarely cause rashes, they can irritate broken skin. Use water at home and wipes for trips. Allow the area to air-dry.The stools of diarrhea can make the skin of the buttocks and anus become shiny red and painful. Don’t use a washcloth if the area is raw; instead, sit the baby in lukewarm water to cleanse away stool. Expose the baby’s bottom to air as much as possible, and apply a soothing diaper cream to put a barrier between the skin and future stools. As the diarrhea lessens, the skin will begin to heal. If a diaper rash doesn’t respond in two to three days and the baby was recently on antibiotics, you might be dealing with a yeast infection. A yeast rash tends to extend into the skin creases; it can be a solid red area with a little peeling or prickly rash at the edges. Apply Lotrimin Cream (now available without prescription)

two to three times a day. Yeast thrives in a moist environment, so again expose the skin to air as much as possible. Continue the cream for several days after the rash fades.Infant skin can be sensitive to soap, detergent, fabric softener, even metal snaps on shirts. Use the mildest possible soap and detergent. Before you call your healthcare provider for advice on a rash, notice the following: * Is it flesh-colored or red? * Flat or raised? * In one place or all over the body? * Is there a fever or other sign of illness?* Does the rash bother the infant?* Is it only in the diaper area or everywhere but the diaper area?* And for diaper-area rashes, is it only on the skin that touches the diaper or does it extend into the creases and skin folds?* Then ask yourself whether there is anything new in the baby’s diet.* New medication?* Have you changed your soap, detergent, fabric softener? Be sure to tell your healthcare provider. When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider * The rash is accompanied by fever.* Your baby is acting sick.* Your child has blisters or open sores.* The rash doesn’t respond to simple measures in a few days.* The rash is painful.

The Fiji Times The most trusted name in news and sports

Canucks finish off PredatorsThe first fatality was entertainment. The second was Nashville’s Stanley Cup hopes. But while the Predators now sleep with the catfishes, the Vancouver Canucks continue their quest to be the first Canadian-based team to bring the Cup north of the border since the Montreal Canadiens did it in 1993.On a night of tough sledding on the choppy ice at Nashville’s hot and humid Bridgestone Arena Monday, the Canucks again strapped their wagon to their big horse, Ryan Kesler, and let him pull them through the slop to the Western final.Kesler set up both goals as Vancouver edged the Predators 2-1, a win that eliminates Nashville in six games. The Canucks will now face the winner of the series between San Jose and Detroit. This is the Canucks first time in the conference final since they met, and wiped out, the Maple Leafs in five games in 1994. It’s the third time in the history of the franchise that they’ve made it this far.In what is a new tradition – one that may eventually rival the octopi toss in Motown - a few catfish, including one huge one, hit the ice before the game but the gesture would have only been useful if one of them could have strapped on a helmet and helped out on the power play.It certainly couldn’t have hurt. The Predators extra-man unit smelled as bad as one of those finned creatures left out in the Nashville heat for the day.The Preds stunk when they had a chance to do some early damage, going 0-for-4 on those power plays in the first period, including two in the early minutes.Meanwhile, Kesler continued his dominant performance in this series with a terrific first period that set the tone. He picked up two assists as the Canucks scored on two of their first five shots to build a 2-0 lead.Kesler now has five goals and five assists in the last four games and he has established himself as one of the favourites for the Conn Smythe Trophy should Vancouver come out of the west. Even without the points in this one, the centre was dominant. While Kesler set the tone, everything

went well for the Canucks in that opening frame. Mason Raymond and Daniel Sedin both scored their first goals of the series, less than two minutes apart midway through that opening frame. The Sedin goal came on the power play, underlining Nashville’s difficulties on special teams. The Preds penalty killing hasn’t been very good either.Kesler, who chipped the puck across the goalmouth to Sedin, has been in on 11 of Vancouver’s last 13 goals.Pekka Rinne, so solid in the Nashville net all season, looked out of sorts through the entire game. He probably wasn’t helped by the soft, choppy ice but he appeared to have trouble tracking the puck through the first.Maybe it was the crappy ice that made this one of the ugliest games of the post-season. The entertainment value was virtually non-existent but for a flurry in

the second period when Nashville came to life.A fluky goal from behind the net from David Legwand – again - briefly ignited the home side but – again - the Preds couldn’t get it done on the power play. They pushed it to an imperfect 0-for-5 late in the second period with an absolutely horrible stretch of play while Vancouver’s Raffi Torres was in the box.Nashville did have one chance to tie it up previous to that in the second when Martin Erat was in alone on a breakaway but Vancouver’s Jeff Tambellini, making his playoff in place of Mikael Samuelsson, caught him and bowled him over with a great check. It was the defensive play of the game. The Canucks had only two shots in that middle frame but didn’t appear worried as the likelihood of Nashville scoring from in front of the net was negligible.

Tiger Woods withdraws after

9 holes Tiger Woods lasted only nine holes Thursday at The Players Championship. After struggling to a six-over 42 on the front nine, Woods withdrew due to multiple injuries. The 2001 Players champion sprained his medial collateral ligament in his left knee and strained his left Achilles tendon at the Masters. This was his first start since.“The knee acted up and then the Achilles followed after that and then the calf started cramping up,” said Woods, who also stated he started feeling pain on his first tee shot. “Everything started getting tight, so it’s just a whole chain reaction.”Woods, who also withdrew from The Players last year, had three bogeys and a triple-bogey on the front nine. At the time he walked off, Woods was tied for last place with Stephen Ames. This was the fourth time, as a professional, that Woods withdrew from a tournament. He also withdrew from the 1995 U.S. Open, when he was an amateur. This marked the first time Woods failed to complete at least one round of a tournament in his career.“The (doctors) said I could play. The more rest I get, the better it would be, obviously,” Woods stated. “Obviously, it’s a big event. I want to come back for it and play, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish.”Woods is still winless since the scandal broke about his personal life in late 2009.

Manny PacquiaoThe greatest boxer in the worldManny “Pacman” Pacquiao has asserted his position as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer in the world and one of, if not, the best boxers of all time, as last Saturday he dominated fellow boxing legend “Sugar” Shane Mosley through all rounds of their 12 round WBO Welterweight Championship bout. Shane Mosley came into the fight with LL Cool J performing the song “Mama said knock you out” live beside Mosley while Manny took a much classier route by bringing in the lead singer from the rock band Survivor who sang the iconic song “Eye of the Tiger” which was featured in the classic boxing movie “Rocky”. Manny donned yellow gloves to express that fighting poverty is really the biggest fight of his life and also encouraged everyone before the fight to wear yellow in a show of unity against this global issue. Pacquiao used his speed, power, excellent ringsmanship and beautiful footwork to outclass Mosley throughout every single round. In the early rounds of the fight Pacquiao and Mosley showed great respect for each other’s power with each trading shots to feel each other out. This continued until the third round when Pacquiao landed a jab and a follow up straight left which knocked Mosley down onto the canvas! This also was the first time since 2002 that Mosley had gotten knocked down which can tell you how great of a fighter Pacquiao is. From the third round onwards Mosley went on the defensive as it seemed he was just trying to survive getting knocked out for the first time in his boxing career. Although, Pacquiao said he suffered from leg cramps after the fourth round and Mosley said he had a blister on his foot that almost made his corner stop the fight but, Pacquiao kept pouring on the shots as he didn’t slow down the slightest showing

his great conditioning, speed and power throughout all 12 rounds. The big question for me after the domination of Shane Mosley is what more does Pacquiao have to prove in boxing? He already is arguably the greatest champion in history as he is the only boxer ever to win world titles in an unprecedented 8 different weight divisions ranging from 105-145lbs or rather Flyweight – Welterweight. Manny also hasn’t lost a fight since 2005 and practically defeating all the top contenders in whatever weight class he was in at the time. He is known as the “Mexecutioner” as he has defeated Mexican legends: Erik Morales, Jorge Solis, Marco Antonia Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Antonio Margarito and even the Golden Boy of boxing himself Oscar De La Hoya. Pacquiao also knocked Ricky Hatton out cold in what was one of the most devastating KO’s even when Hatton only had one loss to his name, TKO’d Miguel Cotto a man thought to be too big and too strong for Pacquiao in what was Manny’s first fight at Welterweight. Everyone wants the super fight and what some say the biggest match in boxing between Manny and Floyd Mayweather Jr. to happen but unless Mayweather stops ducking and finding excuses such as random blood tests and accusing Manny of taking steroids this fight will never happen even though Manny himself is willing to

fight anyone. Money is never the reason to fight for Manny even though he made a cool $20 million last Saturday and can probably make the biggest match, money-wise, with Mayweather happen at will by accepting his foolish demands but all should know rather that Manny fights for his country of the Philippines and is already satisfied with all he’s done in boxing. Manny Pacquiao is the “Fighting Pride of the Philippines” and a national hero, literally. It has been recorded that when Manny fights live, the crime rate

in the Philippines drops to 0% as everyone is watching the fight. Manny Pacquiao is also a Congressman of his country and it so happens that when he’s fighting Congress shuts down for the duration of camp until he comes back to the Philippines. Manny has said that he will fight only because he wants to fight and because the people want the fight which ultimately means his country, every other fan in the world which includes every man, woman, boy and little girl.

Things the Sharks need to win Game 71. QUICK START SHARKS: The San Jose Sharks haven’t gotten off to a good start throughout these playoffs. They might want to find a sense of urgency right now. Their season is on the line. They’ve got no choice. The Wings completely outplayed San Jose in the first period of Game 6, outshooting them 18-6. The Sharks need to set the pace if they’re going to win this game. Detroit is older, but the Wings sure haven’t looked it lately.2. THE RETURN OF RYANE CLOWE: He is suffering from an upper-body ailment that kept him out of Game 6. Clowe is the

club’s scoring leader in the playoffs with 4-9-13 points in 11 games. He is their best player. The Sharks need to have him back in the lineup. The lines were out of sync without him. Logan Couture didn’t look comfortable on the wing. If Clowe does play, how effective will he be? He’s going to have to gut one out.3. THE GOALTENDING DUEL: Jimmy Howard and Antti Niemi have been nothing short of spectacular in this series. You could argue Howard has been better at HP Pavilion than he has been at home. He’s a rock out there.

The Sharks haven’t gotten to Howard since Game 3 and, of course, that’s the last victory they had. Niemi has to pick up right where he left off in Game 6 because he’s been a force in this series. He deserves more support.4. THE PRESSURE OF GAME 7: The Sharks played all season to get home-ice advantage for this situation. In the first round, three of the four home teams won the deciding game. Tampa was the only exception over Pittsburgh.San Jose blew a two goal lead at home in Game 5. That’s when the meltdown really started. The Wings don’t have any pressure

at all. No one expected them to close this gap and tie the series. Sharks are feeling the heat big time.5. THE COACHING BATTLE: So, who is going to make the change that makes the biggest difference? Mike Babcock has a Stanley Cup ring and Olympic gold medal. He knows what it takes to be a winner. He makes the right moves.Todd McLellan hasn’t been outcoached, but he has been outfoxed by Babcock in the last three games. The changes in the lines haven’t really worked. Better find the answers or this season is going to be over pretty quick.

UFC champ Frankie Edgar says UFC 130

cancellation due to bulging discs

Bulging discs, not his rib injury, ultimately were the reason UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar was forced out of a UFC 130 title fight with Gray Maynard on Monday. In fact, he said, he planned to fight through both injuries. But as UFC officials recently announced, the fight instead was scrapped when Maynard also fell victim to injuries, and their headlining spot has been replaced by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Matt Hamill. Now off the May 28 card, UFC president Dana White said the fight – which is a third meeting between the two 155-pounders – could take place in “August or September,” as reported.“All of the reports are talking about my ribs, (but) it’s actually my back,” Edgar told UFC.com’s Mike Straka. “My back’s been bothering me for quite some time. A few weeks ago, I had to take a week off so that my back could calm down, and I was trying to fight through it. I got through it, and it kept blowing out on me here and there, but then I ended up blowing out a rib last week.“My rib kept popping in and out, and then last week, my back went out on me really bad. So I went to see a doctor, and he said I’ve got bulging discs, and now I’m going to go see a specialist to see what he can do about it.”While in Las Vegas for the annual UFC Fighter Summit on Monday, Edgar met with one of the UFC’s specialists and learned his L2 and L5 discs are bulged. The injuries can cause fraction between the vertebrae, which causes pain.Edgar (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC), who had back surgery as an 18-year-old due to wrestling injuries, said he isn’t sure when he’ll be ready to fight again. However, the New Jersey native could end up fighting Maynard (10-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) on the UFC 133 card, which takes place on Aug. 6 in nearby Philadelphia.“I don’t know how long I’ll be out,” he stated. “I’m hoping surgery won’t be an option right now. I’m hoping I can rehab it and get better and get back to training in a month, but I can’t give you any solid answer right now as to how long I’ll be out.”

Another dramatic finish at Empire Field on Wednesday night sent fans home still buzzing, as Davide Chiumiento scored his first goal for Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He left it late, tallying in the 91st minute and earning his team a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes. While the fans left happy, the players, once again, left unsatisfied.

“I’m happy to score, but it’s not important,” said Chiumiento after the match. “We wanted to win this game and it was most important to have three points. In the end, we’re happy with a point, but we need to start to win.”Whitecaps FC didn’t start the game well, giving up numerous chances to San Jose in the first half and eventually getting punished by last year’s MLS Golden Boot winner, Chris Wondolowski. By the time the ‘Caps woke up, there was little time left to get the result they desired.

“Obviously, I think we left it too late,” said goalkeeper Jay Nolly. “We scrambled

home fans on Wednesday

Whitecaps FC’s Davide Chiumiento battles San Jose Earthquakes defender Steven Beitashour at Empire Field

a little bit in the first half, but we were [eventually] breaking through, and I thought we were going to get an early goal in the second half. If we’d done that, we would have put a lot of pressure on them. At the end of the game, we were chasing to tie it up and we didn’t leave ourselves much time to get a winner.”The draw extends Vancouver’s MLS winless streak to nine games, though the

‘Caps have generally played well during that run. However, playing two contests in a week for the third straight time made it a difficult game for the ‘Caps.

“In most of the games we have created three to five good chances, and that’s not bad on this level,” said head coach Teitur Thordarson. “Today, we didn’t manage that and I think the reason is that some of the players are lacking energy. We’ve played so many games lately, every third day, so that obviously will be seen somewhere.”One of those players running on empty is

Despite earning draw, ‘Caps wanted more’

defender Alain Rochat, who has played every minute in all competitions this season.

“It was a hard game,” said Rochat. “We tried to get our rhythm late to get the win, but we missed too many passes. The offense wasn’t good enough throughout the game, but we always fight until the end and we battled to a point.”While his players were clearly frustrated with another draw, Thordarson was again proud of his team’s perseverance.

“We are definitely struggling a bit energy-wise, and that is understandable,” added the head coach. “But I want to say one more time that I am impressed with the character of the team. Confidence-wise, it was without a doubt a very important goal. In situations like this, there is a big difference between drawing the game and losing the game, and there’s no doubt that it means a lot to us. It’s great for the guys to see that it pays off in the end.”

Romantic Bollywood MoviesTreasure the feel of love with your sweetheart by watching some romantic Bollywood movies. Indian film industry is a big reservoir of love stories. Stars of yesteryears have created some great romantic moments which are highly enjoyed by today’s generation.

Awara: It is one of the true classics which created a very intense on screen chemistry between Nargis and Raj Kapoor. Most of the story occupies the flashback in which a slum boy falls in love with a lawyer. The reunion of the two after twelve years was one of the most heart touching scenes.

Dil: Dil starring Madhuri Dixit and Aamir Khan was one of the hit romantic drama movies of 1990. It is a love story leading to a quarrel between the families of the two lovers. Like any other Hindi movies, story had a happy end with the two living happily ever after.

Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini are in love, and expecting some opposition from Ajit, they marry in a simple temple ceremony. But Rajesh Khanna’s dad opposes this marriage, and refuses to accept Hema Malini.

Forced by circumstances, Paro marries a rich but ageing zamindar. Heartbroken, Devdas takes too drinking and gains sympathy of a girl Chandramukhi. The film has a tragic end with Devdas dying in front of Paro house.

Bobby: Bobby is amongst the top romantic movies. The movie revolved around two teenagers falling in love with each other. The song in which Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor gets locked up in a room is truly romantic.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge: DDLJ as it is popularly called was the biggest hit of its time. Top Bollywood stars, Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan made the story seem real. The romantic scenes and the common Indian family scenes gave it rave reviews.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is also one of the big romantic movies. It is a love triangle where one dies (Rani Mukherjee) and gives the responsibility of reuniting the other two (Shahrukh and Kajol) to her daughter.

Andaz: The movie is a comic love triangle which shows complexity of love and silent longing. Andaz captures the imagination totally.

Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor. Rajat Arora is the scriptwriter for the film. This same team collaborated earlier to deliver the hit movie ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’.Milan Luthria is very particular about his actor and actresses delivering the ‘real feel’ on the screen. Tusshar and Vidya are watching different movies following his instructions. Tusshar states simply that they are working hard to get the demands of the script and director satisfied.

Steven Sushil SharmaTusshar Kapoor, Vidya Balan are learning loveSilk Smitha is the sex siren from the southern part of India and depicting her life on big screen will surely include passionate and bold love scenes. Therefore, the stars of the upcoming movie “The Dirty Picture” are concerned about performing well in the love scenes. The co stars Vidya Balan and Tusshar Kapoor are desperately busy to learn all about love in a bid to act well. They were recently seen watching the performance of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit in the movie Parinda. On being questioned about this, Tusshar replied that everyone should learn from others and there is nothing wrong in viewing a film but there is definitely no chance of copying shots.Milan Luthria is directing the film and it is getting produced by Ekta

Deepika to take legal action if ‘Ragini MMS’ not shown to her

Delhi-based Deepika, whose real life story inspired Ekta Kapoor’s upcoming film “Ragini MMS”, said that if the film is not shown to her prior to its release, she will take legal action against the producer.“I want to see the film. I have spoken to Ekta about it. She doesn’t want to show it to me, I don’t know why?” the 22-year-old told reporters.“I’m coming from Balaji office right now and the only answer I get is that the movie is not ready. How is it possible? The movie is releasing in one week. If I’m not shown the film before release, I will take legal action,” she added.Deepika, who was shown the script of the film before it was filmed, said she wants to see whether she has been portrayed in the right light or not.“When the film was being made, I was shown the script and I did read it. I have no problem with the

script. But there is a lot of difference between reading the script and interpreting that on the screen. I want to see how they have portrayed my character. Because if there is something bad, then my image will be ruined,” said the Delhi girl.“Ragini MMS”, which is produced by Ekta and directed by Pawan Kripalani, is slated to hit screens May 13 and is about a couple who goes for an adventurous weekend and gets filmed by 24 cameras amid some paranormal activity.Ekta has maintained that only 30 percent of the film is based from Deepika’s incident and the rest is pure imagination.According to Deepika, she was offered money as compensation for her story but she refused.“Ekta asked me if I want to be paid. But I said no. she didn’t mention an amount but she said she can pay me for this. But I told her that I don’t want anything because it’s a story on my life,” she said.In the real life incident, Deepika said, her boyfriend secretly filmed both of them involved in intimate physical contact.

Katrina

Madhubala ConnectionKatrina Kaif’s career seems to be only sky rocketing despite her films bombing at the B.O of late. The latest news is that Katrina would be dancing to a special number in the film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan which will be a tribute to the gorgeous and talented Madhubala. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is a Yash Raj Film’s production co-starring Imran Khan and Ali Zafar. The buzz is that the song sequence would be triggered after Katz sees a picture of Madhubala at a roadside dhaba.Apart from the Madhubala tribute in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, rumors is also adrift that Katz will also be donning the role of Madhubala is Anurag Basu’s biopic on Kishore Kumar. We don’t know if Katrina has the ability to pull off a Madhubala but, it is sure something to look out for in the coming days. Katrina could potentially change

her Sheila tag to Madhubala if she is able to pull this off.

Thor (PG) * * * * *

Hammer Time!By ROBERT WALLDMAN

Summer finally arrives at the movies with THOR, a monumental epic from Paramount Pictures now reaping in huge crowds at Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City Cites around B.C.Kids the world over know Marvel Comics. Brand names count big time when it comes to creating awareness and the Thor comic books have a legion of fans. Expect admirers of the God of Thunder to grow as this majestic 114 minute film opens. High camp collides with ageless intrigue as noted director Kenneth Branagh (Sleuth) mines the depths of those priceless pages to thrust us into a world of make believe sure to delight.By use of a very smart technique of alternating between parallel universes the key figures in Thor are charted out. Basically the

movie begins in Earth, moves on to a literal ice age, then hurls into modern times in of all places New Mexico. Aboard for this fateful journey are a Norse warrior named Thor, various pretenders to the throne and a race of ice dripping demons just itching for a fight. You get the picture. This is high camp all the way in the best comic book tradition in decades.Cast in the pivotal role of Thor is Australian hunk Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek). Most folks likely don’t know who this actor is but it’s only a matter of time before he charms you into his corner. Converting Thor’s temper for the purpose of good is one of the challenges here as Thor and his colleagues take on a truly evil menace led by the mercurial King Laufey. Canadian Colm Feore (The Sum of All Fears) is completely unrecognizable under all that thick blue make-up as the mastermind of a race that is hell bent on destroying Thor, his family, and their civilization. Expect lots of palace intrigue and behind the scenes machinations as Thor’s dad, the good king Odin, must name a successor amidst

all the chaos exploding around them. Academy Award winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) lends some respectability to the warring factions as a king on a mission who doesn’t exactly relish his oldest son’s penchant for action. More meek and mild is the king’s number two son, Loki. Actor Tom Hiddleston simply aces this role.So while we try to sort out the goings on and growing restlessness on a far away planet back on Earth Thor is jettisoned to lead a life in exile. Being a stranger in a new land can pose problems and this man runs into all sorts of unexpected predicaments. Thanks to a total fluke he meets up with some young earthlings headlined by roving scientist Jane Foster. Fresh off her big Oscar win Natalie Portman (Black Swan) appears rather flustered when she meets this stranger in some of the movie’s funniest moments. Why Portman was cast in this role is the question of the day as she really offers little to the proceedings and any actress could have played this role equally well at a fraction of her pay. Hints of the romance unfolding here are rather feeble, tepid and somewhat disjointed. All the scenes on Earth, though an important part of the story, pale in comparison to the computer generated images of the “other world.” Loads of special effects dominate this movie and they truly are state of the art. Tongue in cheek dialogue simply ramps

Oprah Winfrey Guarantees Return to Broadway

Oprah Winfrey ends its 25-year run on May 25. What will the talk show queen do once she’s done interviewing famous celebrities and sharing inspiring stories with her viewers?

The mega star made it clear in a recent interview with The Chicago Tribune: it will soon be off to Broadway.“I have a stack of plays in my bag right now that I am reading,” she said. “And just this past weekend, I was in New York meeting with producers. We were just talking about what would be the best route to take. But yes, this is really going to happen.”Adds Winfrey, who recently produced The Color Purple and was openly critical last week of OWN: “(After The Oprah Show wraps) it’s time to do something for fun. This next phase of my life should be pure delight.”Oprah says she’s looking for an “ensemble” production.

up the whole entertainment value to Thor which is truly enormous. Consider Thor to be one of those epics that must be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated. Do not waste your time trying to see this film on a computer screen or on dvd. Big films like Thor demand a big screen experience. Unfortunately, the 3-D effects aren’t that pronounced. After the movie, notice the hundreds of professionals who helped bring this comic hero to

life. Pay attention: Do not leave the movie when it ends. A key scene from the upcoming Avengers film is talked on at the end of the credits. For people who value imagination, creativity and the ultimate confrontation between good and evil with a touch of good humour thrown in and a star in the making performance by a relative newcomer from down under, Thor can’t be beat and will simply pound all competitors in the marketplace. Brave the crowds to see this event movie. And to coin a patented phrase from rapper M.C. Hammer, it’s hammer time!

Successful rose growing begins with proper attention to these same 4 basic elements. Get this right, and you’re well on your way to classic rose growing in your own backyard: Soil • Roses prefer a soil pH ranging from 6.5 to 6.8. • Soils with good drainage are best for rose growing. When improving the soil through the use of soil amendments, don’t forget to promote drainage by incorporating peat moss. Irrigation • Watering requirements depend greatly on conditions. But on the average, it is best to water rose bushes twice a week – and to water them thoroughly. A regimen of two deep watering per week

is preferable to four shallower, less thorough watering. • Avoid late-evening watering, which could foster powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is a very common disease among roses. Spacing • Rose growing in conditions where adequate spacing is not provided can foster powdery mildew, as well. Let your roses breathe: don’t plant them too closely together. Follow spacing requirements for each particular variety when purchasing rose bushes, as indicated on the plant label. Sun• Roses like six hours of sun per day • Six hours of morning sun is preferable to six hours of afternoon sun.

High-risk driving campaign reminds us

to make smart decisions The province, the police and ICBC launched a month-long campaign to help raise awareness about the importance of smart driving behaviours and the impact of high-risk driving on our roads. One thousand pairs of shoes set the backdrop for today’s event, representing a small portion of the 76-thousand people injured in crashes each year in B.C.*Driver actions are a contributing factor in 63 per cent of all police-attended crashes involving injuries and fatalities in B.C. That’s why during the month of May, police are stepping up enforcement across the province targeting high-risk driving behaviours including speeding, failing to yield, following too closely, ignoring a traffic control device and improper passing. ICBC will also be partnering with Speed Watch volunteers throughout the province to help make drivers more aware of the actual speed they’re travelling.“We know that many crashes and injuries can be prevented and it’s something that we should all seriously think about,” said Mary McNeil, Minister of Children and Family Development. “Many driver behaviours may seem harmless, such as tailgating, but the reality is they increase the risk of causing a crash.”“Don’t take risks that will endanger yourself or others. We’re stepping up enforcement to let people know we’re serious about reducing crashes so that what we’ve seen doesn’t happen to you,”

said Inspector Ted Schinbein, VPD Traffic Services. “High-risk behaviours have no place on our roadways.”“We need to shift our mindset about what we consider risky behaviours,” said Jon Schubert, ICBC’s president and CEO. “Driving is one of the most complex things we do. And driving smart is about shifting our attitudes – asking ourselves how we can all be part of making our roads safer.”The advertising component of the campaign aims to remind drivers that if they slow down, they’ll see more of the road. The campaign includes radio, television and an interactive game on icbc.com/drivesmart to help illustrate how much is going on at intersections at any given time.We can all do our part to help keep our roads safer if we follow a few tips:• When making a left turn, be extra cautious and yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic. • Leave enough space between your car and the one in front of you. • Leave early and allow for extra travel time in case of delays. • As a reminder: yellow lights mean you should stop if you can do so safely. • Slow down and drive smart. For more drive smart tips and information about the campaign, visit icbc.com.*Five year average based on 2006-2010 ICBC data.

Honda can, without a doubt, be considered an environmentally friendly car company. Their small cars, the Fit and the Civic, are versatile, fuel-efficient and produce low levels of CO2 emissions. Their hybrid models, the Insight and CR-Z, are extremely efficient. So how can they justify an 8-passenger SUV in their product line-up?Well, it has to maximize fuel economy. It has to maximize interior space. And it has to avoid being perceived by the public as a dirty, socially-irresponsable truck. The Pilot manages to meet at least two of these three conditions.Under the hood of the Pilot resides a 24-valve, 3.5-litre V6 that’s found in various Honda and Acura products. In this case, it gets cylinder deactivation systems across the model range and develops 250 horsepower as well as 253 pound-feet of

torque. The sole transmission choice is a 5-speed automatic; Honda does have a 6-speed in the tool shed, which equips

the Odyssey Touring and several Acura models, so why don’t they quit fooling around and put it in the Pilot?

Whatever. Zero to 100 takes 8.8 seconds, which isn’t bad by truck standards, but some of its rivals are quicker. As for fuel economy, our average of 13.2 L/100 km is decent but didn’t trigger any high-fives in the office. The Advanced VCM system, or Variable Cylinder Management, helps a little but isn’t a miracle worker. The V6 is smooth while providing enough muscle for a tow rating of 4,500 pounds (or 2,045 kg). That’s better than the Mazda CX-9, but not as good as pretty much every other mid-size, 7- or 8-passenger SUV.The VTM-4 all-wheel drive system works the front wheels under normal conditions, and sends up to 70 percent of engine torque back to the rear during acceleration or when wheel slippage is detected. The system can be locked in four-wheel mode with the help of a dash-mounted button, but it only works under about 30 km/h.

‘BAd’ CHOLESTEROL IS ACTUALLY ‘GOOd’A new study has found that low-density lipoprotein (LdL) or so-called “bad cholesterol” is not as bad as it has been made out to be in recent years.Walls, causing a slowing of the blood flow that often leads to heart disease and heart attacks. But researcher Steve Riechman from the Texas A and M University said, “LDL serves a very useful purpose. It acts as a warning sign that something is wrong and it signals the body to these warning signs. It does its job the way it is supposed to.”Riechman conducted the study with colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh, Kent State University, the

Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. They examined 52 adults from ages to 60 to 69 who were in generally good health but not physically active and none of them were participating in a training program. The study showed that after fairly vigorous workouts, participants who had gained the most muscle mass also had the highest levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, which Riechman said, “a very unexpected result and one that surprised us.”“It shows that you do need a certain amount of LDL to gain more muscle mass. There’s no doubt you need both

MEN THINk ABOUT FOOd, SLEEP MORE THAN SEx, MYTH ExPOSEdThe saying, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, seems to be true, as a study has shown that men, who are believed to have a one-track mind, actually think more about food and sleep than they do about sex.The research also found that contrary to popular belief, men do not think about sex every seven seconds, and that in reality, it is more like once every waking hour.Professor Terri Fisher, a psychologist at the Ohio State University in the U.S. carried out the study on 163 students, both male and female. They were asked to carry around a chart and mark it every time they thought about sex, food or sleep. It was found the numbers varied widely, as one student recorded only one sexual

thought a day, and another male wrote down 388 in 24 hours. But on average, men thought about food and sleep more often than they thought about sex, but they thought about all three more often than women did.“Men are more aware of need-related states such as being hungry or tired or sexually aroused, and focus on those,” the reporter quoted Fisher as saying.“They are also better at detecting these states in themselves than women and more willing to express their thoughts,” she revealed. She added that even the student who thought about sex 388 times in a day was only thinking about it every 158 seconds – far fewer than the “every seven seconds” that myth suggested.“When people hear about some of these differences, I think sometimes

they don’t question it because it fits the stereotypes we have of men and women,” Fisher said.“When you stop and take a closer look at the origins of some of these alleged differences, they sometimes have no empirical support,” she explained.Behavioral Psychologist Jo Hemmings, author of How To Have Great Sex, explains why men are so preoccupied with their stomachs.“There tend to be more trigger mechanisms to thinking about food,” Hemmings said.“The sights and smells associated with eating, as well as simple hunger or thirst, tend to be more commonplace in everyday life than the trigger mechanism for thinking about sex, so inevitably we think more about it,” she added.

CHOCOLATE, REd wINE SHARPEN

YOUR MINdRed wine and chocolate make for a deadly combination to keep your mind sharp and alert, a study suggests.Polyphenols, plant chemicals abundant in dark chocolate and wines, dilate blood vessels, speeding the supply of blood to the brain. This provides it with a rush of oxygen and sugars, making complex calculations easier and quicker. Besides polyphenols are more effective in combination than alone, the media reports. The theory follows two Northumbria University studies into the effects of polyphenols on the mind. In the first, healthy adults were set a series of tests after taking a capsule packed with resveratrol, the ‘wonder ingredient’ in red wine.Scans showed a marked increase in blood flow to their brains after taking the supplement.Greater improvements may be seen in the elderly, said doctoral researcher Emma Wightman from Northumbria, because blood flow to the brain naturally decreases with age.Unfortunately for wine lovers, the quantities of resveratrol used in the study would equate to drinking crates of the stuff. But it is easy to get the same amounts from supplements sold in health food stores. And with resveratrol credited with abilities from extending life to burning off junk food, Wightman says there is nothing to stop people from stocking up.“There is research showing quite a lot of health benefits and there is nothing to suggest there are any adverse effects. You are not going to come to any harm,” she said.

THE NATURAL ‘SUPER-SMOOTHIE’ THAT CUTS CARdIAC RISkScientists have concocted a cocktail of seven fruit juices, including grapes and the not-so-familiar lingonberry that boosts health that cuts the risk of heart disease and stroke and also tastes good. The ‘super-smoothie’ contains grapes, apples, blueberries and strawberries. However, there are exotic additions. These include so-called superfoods cowberry (aka lingonberry), a tart red fruit related to the cranberry, and acerola, a red

cherry-like fruit that has 30 times more vitamin C than orange juice. The final ingredient of the smoothie is aronia, or chokeberry, an American blackberry once described as the “healthiest berry in the world”, the journal reports.Past studies have shown that compounds in fruit called polyphenols protect the heart and help prevent clogged arteries.French scientists say their smoothie contains the healthiest and best tasting combination of fruit juices. Blends of 13 different purees and juices were

– the LDL and the HDL — and the truth is, it (cholesterol) is all good. You simply can’t remove all the ‘bad’ cholesterol from your body without serious problems occurring,” he said.“People often say, ‘I want to get rid of all my bad (LDL) cholesterol,’ but the fact is, if you did so, you would die.“Our tissues need cholesterol, and LDL delivers it. HDL, the good cholesterol, cleans up after the repair is done. And the more LDL you have in your blood, the better you are able to build muscle during resistance training.“The bottom line is that LDL – the bad cholesterol – serves as a reminder that something is wrong and we need to find out what it is,” he added.

analysed in a lab for their effects on pig arteries. But the finished recipe was selected after tests by 80 volunteers. In tests, heart artery walls relaxed when they were exposed to the fruit juice cocktail. The researchers, from the University of Strasbourg, France, say that in a human, this would boost the flow of blood to the heart and ensure it got a healthy balance of nutrients and oxygen. The team also measured the antioxidant ability of different recipes to neutralise harmful molecules in the body that can

damage DNA and cells. The study found that some polyphenols were more potent than others - and that their ability to mop up harmful ‘free radicals’ that can damage DNA and cells was more important than the amount of polyphenols in each fruit.Said Tracy Parker of the British Heart Foundation: “This research adds more weight to evidence that eating fruit and vegetables is good for us in terms of reducing our risk for heart disease.”

Upset Hindus have welcomed apology from an Australian swimwear label over the depiction of image of Goddess Lakshmi on swimwear at Rosemount Australian Fashion week in Sydney last week.

AUSSIE FLAG BURNED OVER IMAGE OF GODDESS LAKSHMI AT ROSEMOUNT AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK

Indian activists of the right-wing Hindu organisation Shiv Sena held photocopies of models wearing swimwear featuring Lakshmi as they burned an Australian flag during a demonstration in Amritsar. A statement attributed to Lisa Blue

Swimwear, headquartered in Byron Bay said: “We would like to offer an apology to anyone we may have offended and advise that the image of Goddess Lakshmi will not appear on any piece of Lisa Blue swimwear for the new season, with a halt put on all production of the new range and pieces shown on the runway from last week removed.“This range will never be available for sale in any stockists or retail outlets anywhere in the world. We apologize to the Hindu community and take this matter very seriously”.In a statement, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, said the apology was “a step in the right direction”.He said inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for commercial or other agendas was offensive to devotees. Symbols of any faith should not be mishandled, he added. In an earlier protest statement, Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, asked the swimwear

manufacturer and RAFW organizers to publicly apologize and immediately recall all swimwear which showed the Hindu goddess.

A nurse jailed for raping another woman in the toilets at a popular Brisbane hotel had not got a fair trial because the judge misdirected the jury on the issue of mistaken belief of consent, a court heard. In the Court of Appeal in Brisbane Jeff Hunter, SC, was making submissions on behalf of Anne-Marie O’Loughlin, now 26, who was convicted in a District Court trial last year on two counts of digital rape and one of deprivation of liberty at the Caxton Hotel, near the CBD, on November 29, 2009.O’Loughlin was found not guilty of a fourth charge of sexual assault. She was jailed for 2-and-a-half years with a release date in March next year. The five-day trial heard O’Loughlin attacked the 32-year-old woman in the female toilets of the hotel where she digitally vaginally and anally raped the woman. The victim, who cannot be named, told the court although she kissed O’Loughlin in the toilets for up to three minutes, she had not given consent for Ms O’Loughlin to pull up her top and bra and touch her breast. She further claimed she had not consented to being digitally penetrated by O’Loughlin. In the Court of Appeal , Mr Hunter said the jury asked for a direction on how it could use intoxication when resolving the issue of mistaken belief. The judge given an incorrect direction and the jury was given a written version of it

which would have complicated the matter.“The complainant’s inability to set out how she ended up in the cubicle with a woman she didn’t know is a significant matter,” Mr Hunter said, pointing out the woman had never explained the origins of the offence.Mr Hunter said the complainant had also given different versions of the incident to her boyfriend and police. He said it should have given a properly instructed jury real concerns about whether they could convict beyond reasonable doubt. Her boyfriend had been very angry and he was the one who wanted to call police.Mr Hunter said the fact the woman was wearing tight fitting hipster jeans also

raised the question about how her buttons were undone so O’Loughlin could get her hands in a position for digital assault.“In a case of word versus word a properly instructed jury should have had reservations about consent,” he added. However, Michael Copley, SC, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, said there had been no direction which had disadvantaged O’Loughlin. He said when read in its entirety the direction had properly explained the concept of intoxication and reasonableness and mistaken belief.Mr Copley said on the tight jeans the evidence showed penetration had taken place and it was not an issue. The Court of Appeal reserved its judgment.

TEN cyclone shelters will be built in north Queensland after a $30 million donation from the Emirati state of Abu dhabi. United Arab Emirates Minister of State Reem Al-Hashimy announced the donation while visiting Brisbane. It was immediately matched by Premier Anna Bligh, who said the $60 million would be used for multi-purpose shelters along the north Queensland coast. She said the exact locations had yet to be finalised, but would likely include

A MAN who allegedly hit his wife with a tomahawk and stabbed her with a fork has been arrested, Northern Territory Police say. The 35-year-old man appeared in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court, accused of seriously assaulting his 39-year-old wife last Friday night. In a statement released on Monday, a police spokeswoman said Alice Springs police received a telephone call at about 9pm about a domestic disturbance in a house on Ellery Drive.A woman at the house told police her husband hit her in the leg with a tomahawk and stabbed her in the head and wrist with a fork. She also said he hit her twice over the head with a plastic chair.“The woman said her husband had also dragged her from a car earlier in the night and kicked her to the head and stomach,” the spokeswoman said. The woman was taken to Alice Springs Hospital by ambulance for treatment. The man has been charged with aggravated assault and two counts of being armed with an offensive weapon.

Cairns, Townsville, the Cassowary Coast, Proserpine/Airlie Beach, Mackay, Rockhampton and Weipa.Ms Bligh said the gesture was an extremely generous and unsolicited gift.“This is what friends do for each other,” she said. The Premier said work would begin by the year’s end, with shelters being completed in the next 18 months to two years. The lack of category five cyclone shelters became an issue when Cyclone Yasi hit the state in January.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark squeaked out a narrow by-election victory Wednesday night that will see her return to the provincial legislature.Clark barely defeated B.C. NDP challenger David Eby in the tightly fought contest in the riding of Vancouver-Point Grey.As the votes were being counted, Eby was actually ahead of Clark for much of the night. But when all 167 ballot boxes were tallied, Clark had pulled ahead with 7,371 votes for 48.92 per cent of the votes cast. Eby’s garnered 6,776 votes for 44.97 per cent of the vote.Clark’s victory marked the first time in 30 years that any sitting government in the

province had won a by-election, and she it shows people are endorsing the direction she is taking the province as Premier.“We are going to build on the change we have begun to bring,” Clark said.“We are going to build on things like raising the minimum wage, like eliminating parking fees in parks, we are going to continue to work and make sure that the total burden of costs put on families gets lower.”Clark is no stranger to the legislature in Victoria. She was an MLA and a prominent cabinet minister for a Vancouver-area riding from 1996 to 2004, when she resigned to spend more time with her family.

PM HARPER TOURS MANITOBA FLOOD zONE

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is touring the Assiniboine River flood zone in western Manitoba, getting an eyeful of the desperate situation facing residents.Meanwhile, Brandon Mayor Shari Decter Hirst is urging people not to visit her city.“Don’t come to Brandon now,” she said, noting it is not business as usual in Manitoba’s second-largest city.“Don’t send your children here. Don’t visit

Brandon right now. We are in a state of emergency.”That said, she appreciates the visit by Harper on Wednesday afternoon. It’s important that he gets first-hand look at the situation, she said.“We will be looking to the federal government for expedited help for assistance. The Prime Minister will see the urgency of the situation here.”

B.C. PREMIER CHRISTY CLARK WINS CLOSE BY-ELECTION

A Canadian man accused of taking millions of dollars from unsuspecting American seniors has been ordered deported to the U.S. to face charges.William Dixon is alleged to have been the most successful salesman in a telemarketing fraud operation based in Surrey, B.C.Court documents claim Dixon and the company he worked for collected about $3 million from unsuspecting seniors by telling them they needed to send money to

claim fake lottery prizes. In June 2009, the B.C. Supreme Court ordered his extradition, but Dixon went to a higher court, asking for a judicial review of the Justice Minister’s decision to extradite him to face charges.Dixon wanted to be tried in Canada and claimed that his rights to a fair trial in the United States would be hindered. The three-judge B.C. Appeal Court panel rejected all his arguments, opening the door again for his extradition.
