SAINT PAUL CHURCH HAMILTON / WENHAM

A Big Thank YOU!...Over the past few weeks numerous toys and

Ziploc bags full of toiletries quietly appeared under the Christmas trees at

the entrances of the church, in addition to the huge box in the hall for

Wellspring. Once delivered, these gifts will provide much needed relief

to many families in the area. St. Paul’s is blessed with such a loving and

generous community. Thank you!

The Church is Our Mother and Teacher

Dear Friends,

In our parishes the Month of May brings forth our Marion devotions, (i.e. May Procession and the recitation of the

Rosary) among others. We honor and pray to Mary who is the Mother of the Church and our mother, too. We

celebrate our First Communion Masses with our children who advance further in their faith formation through this

sacrament of initiation…the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist together with the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation,

introduces us into full communion with the Church. On Mother’s Day, May 8, at Saint Paul’s we remember our

mothers, living and deceased at each of the Masses.

There is a common thread as we honor Mary, celebrate with our children, and show gratitude and remembrance for our

mothers. The one main theme is the Church, which Christ has given to us. Mary is Mother of the Church. Our children

are initiated into the Church with their reception of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and it is our mothers,

together with our fathers, who first bring us to the Church. In thanking our mothers this month, we should be ever

grateful for the true nurturing in the faith they gave us. It is a gift, which used correctly, will bear rich dividends for

eternity.

Pope St. John XXIII wrote an encyclical letter entitled, Mater et Magister (Mother and Teacher). These are beautiful

and significant titles, which tell us of the importance of the Church in the life of a Christian. Christ has given us a

mother and teacher to nurture, feed, and guide us on our pilgrim journey to the kingdom of heaven. Later, Pope St.

John Paul II gave us an apostolic letter entitled Christofideles Laici (Christ’s Faithful Lay People). This letter gives

further development to our understanding of Church and our active involvement.

In each local parish and in the households that comprise each parish, true “communion” with Christ, Church, and one

another exists. There is “communion” when we gather for Mass as consecrated sons and daughters of Jesus Christ

through baptism. There is a “communion” with God through Jesus Christ and with all the saints when we gather to

worship at Mass. We never want to forget all that God has done for us through his Son, Jesus Christ. We must always

remember, thank, and beseech the Father with our intentions as we worship at

Mass. By strengthening our friendship with God, we hope to “love tenderly, act

justly, and walk humbly with God” (Micah 6.8). This is “communion” as we

strive to deepen our bonds of charity with Him, our family and neighbor.

Christ’s Faithful Lay People reminds us that every Christian participates in the

evangelical mission of the Church. How? Every person is called to holiness.

This is concretely realized by your good example which you display in your

home, parish, workplace, and community. The saving work of Christ continues

through your witness. This is your unique vocation and what a beautiful vocation

each member of the laity is called to render.

Our witness will only be as strong as our ties are to the Lord Jesus. May we

appreciate the Church as mother and teacher. She bids us not to stand idle, but to

live with a purpose and a passion here on earth. May together with Christ we

seek eternal glory in fulfillment of God’s plan for us through our communion

within His Church
