the year and are entitled to a free quarter page space. We
would love to hear from you! If you have an item you want
mentioned in the “Matters” you can either contact me at the
address below or drop it into the RED BOX in the window at

MAUNGATUROTO’S NEW ADDITION
If you have driven through town lately you have probably noticed the large notice board across from the St John’s Ambulance Station. This was built on behalf of the Maungaturoto Business Association for the community to use for advertising up-coming events. We would like to thank Ken Finlayson for all his hard work re-building and erecting the sign and also a big thanks to John Massey for his help bending and welding the stands. It is good to have such a wonderful sign for all to use. Please respect it and look after it, it takes a lot of effort and fund-raising to provide such items. If your group has something they wish to adver-tise please give me a ring on 4318 599. You may have also noticed that our small notice board has recently been tidied up. I will endeav-our to keep this up, but a few small requests from me: please keep ad sizes to a reasonable size, all notices are to be dated as notes will be up for one month only. If there is no date on a note please don’t get put out if it is removed, it just means I have no idea how long it’s been up and may re-move it, and please no business advertising, it’s a community notice board not a newspaper. On a different note it was great to see some new faces at the last Business Association meeting, and as always more are always welcome, just give Gale a ring (4318 786) for all the info and she will be more than happy to help you out. Till next time

BUSABOUT TRIPS MAUNGATUROTO
You would have seen the flyers arriving in your mail boxes about Busabout.
What a wonderful scheme this is and a great service for the community. It is the brain child of Joyce Brooks with the aid of Pat Tuhy and Doug Slater. The purpose of Busabout is to enable those who choose not to drive long distances, or those who for various reasons are no longer driving, to enjoy visiting other areas at a very reasonable cost. This enables one to enjoy the journey stress free and in the company of friends. The last trip on 24 February was to Whanga-rei, a previous one was to Dargaville. At present Busabout is operating once a month, but obviously if the call is there for the service, then Joyce and her group will look at increasing the service. Busabout is for everyone, not just the elderly and a very personal service is guaranteed. An example is that one passenger had to be at Whangarei Hospital, so the bus detoured and drop the passenger right at the door, thanks to the thoughtfulness of the driver. I’m not sure which one, but Les Chapman and Bill Lewis are the gentlemen who drive the bus. Options for the future depending on demand, are trips to shows and the theatre. This is a much needed service in Maunga-turoto and fantastic that we now have it. Support for such a venture is paramount and we all should utilise it . You know what they say - “Use it or Lose It” Best wishes to Joyce, Pat and Doug for having the foresight to introduce such a much needed service into our community.

General information on Maungaturoto Ambulance
Last year attended 430 ambulance jobs (record month in January being 62 jobs) The 17 members and pride themselves in providing a 24/7 service to their community. There has not been a day in the last 50 year that the ambulance has not been crewed. They need more volunteers to ensure this vital service continues to provide its high standard of care. Their area covers from Waiotira (in the north), Te Hana (in the south), Te Arai Pt/Mangawhai (in the east) to, Matakohe/Tinopai (in the west) but at times backups Bream Bay, Wellsford & Warkworth areas. The Kaiwaka First Response is down to 6 members and finds it very hard to cover their area during the week days.
An Information Day and FREE 4-hour first aid course is being held on Sat 11 March at the Maungaturoto ambulance station (12-5pm) and at the Kaiwaka Ambulance station on Sun 12 March (12-5pm). Phone 0800 STJOHN (0800 785 646) if you are interested in becoming a volunteer or attending the FREE 4-hour first aid course. Pat Hosford (Volunteer Station Manager) Why she joined

Maungaturoto & Kaiwaka join “30 in three” campaign
The dedicated St John team at Maungaturoto & Kaiwaka would welcome more volunteers They are holding a campaign to recruit operational volunteers to work on ambulances The campaign launches a wider push by St John to recruit 30 volunteers, Northland-wide, in the next three months. St John rural support officer Mark Going says St John volunteers are everyday people who make a differ-ence. “You don’t need a medical background, St John provides all the training you need.” Mr Going says previous volunteers in Northland have liked it so much, they have decided to pursue full-time careers with St John. “St John volunteering is a way for people to help their community, gain personal satisfaction, learn new skills, gain free clinical training and be part of a team.” Until May, St John is touring 16 Northland towns and holding free blood pressure checks, station open days, free mini- first aid training courses, distributing information brochures and posters and answering people’s questions about ambulance work. Look out for these opportunities in your local area from February 20, culminating in the station open day and a free four-hour course at Maungaturoto station on March 11 (12-5pm) and Kaiwaka station on March 12 (12-5pm). “We welcome the opportunity to help clear up myths and misconceptions about ambulance work,” says Mr Going.” People think of it as all blood and guts. But injuries are just a small part of our work - more often it is about caring for our community at medical incidents.” Mr Going encourages people who want to make a difference in their community to phone St John on 0800 ST JOHN (0800 785 646) or visit the website www.stjohn.org.nz

NEW EXHIBITION COMING TO THE KAURI MUSEUM:
Gowns to party in …. From the 19th & 20th Century
From the sedate waltzes of the late 19th century to the flappers and Charleston of the 20th comes a dazzling array of “gowns to party in”. Rarely do these gowns see the light of day as they are held in archival storage at The Kauri Mu-seum and if the truth be known probably did not see the light of day back in their heyday of late night balls and parties! But on this rare occasion a wide selection of these glamorous old gowns are to be displayed for one month at The Kauri Museum in Matakohe. It is interesting to note that the ladies kept their ball gowns and party dresses while the formal wear for men has all but disappeared. However for the exhibition a few dinner suits including that of former Prime Minister Gordon Coates will make an appearance to partner the beauty of the la-dies’ evening wear. For those who nostalgically recall those party days of a bygone era this is an exhibition not to be missed. On show from FRIDAY 3RD MARCH – SUNDAY 2ND APRIL 2006
BEAUTIFUL GOWN WITH LOCAL HISTORY A ball gown, originally worn by Mrs M Glenie at the Ruawai Country Womens Institute Debutante Ball in 1956 is just one of the many stunning gowns on show in the upcoming exhibition “Gowns to Party In”. It is made of pink satin taffeta overlaid with black lace and now is part of the extensive textile col-lection at The Kauri Museum. The provenance of the gown is really lovely. Mrs Glenie was President at the Presentation of the Debutantes Committee. It is said that on the day of the ball she was surprised with a gift of this dress from her husband. It was apparently a perfect fit.
Ed’s Note: Regretably the photos of these beautiful gowns did not copy well into the ‘Matters”
Well the year has started with a bang and we are of and running down the track trying to keep ahead of all the plans
and players out there.
Our first parenting programme was a great success and helped solve a few problems for some worried parents.
This programme will be running again this year in April and then again later in Sep-
tember. Phone us to get your name down before it fills up...094319080. Our next workshop, ‘Healthy Relationships’ is starting in early March and we are taking registrations now for that. This is a 6 week course, Mondays only and deals with relationships between you and others, a great self esteem
building course helping you to better understand and communicate.
Remember these courses are all funded and brought to you free of charge.
The Community health Plan
This started 16th Feb with a good number of people all keen to find out what we were on about and all had expectations of something different. The public health Dietician gave a brief talk on the basics of eating healthy and this was fol-lowed by questions and answers, a chart of what to eat and how much was handed out and added was a little questionnaire that asked… what did you eat today? This was followed by a one minute health check, blood pressures and a weigh in for those that wanted it, from the District nurse then came Renee from Sports Northland with the pedome-ters and the challenge to do 10,000 steps a day. Looking forward to seeing the improvement weekly There were so much interest but we were running out of time and had to defer questions to the next session.
Following week we had a guest speaker by way of a local Homeopath and many more questions were answered ,
we are also making available a 1st aid kit of homeopathic remedies and look forward to meeting next month with the
Diabetes society president who is taking us for a trip to the supermarket
That’s every Thursday 4pm to 5pm Homebuilders House Maungaturoto. In future Maungie Matters we intend to print the details of who’s coming to talk and what dates but as yet we are
not quite organized enough in advance with our gust speakers.
Pahi Kids Big day out is coming February 26th and fingers crossed for the weather but this goes to print before the
event has happened so I hope I can report next month that it was a great day out for the families.
Good Old Days Luncheon is on again 1st Wednesday of each month and we look forward to seeing our
team of senior citizens and hearing their tales of Christmas treats and trappings.
That’s about it from us at homebuilders, remember we are here to help and welcome you all to drop in to our commu-
nity house in Hurndall St, Monday to Friday, or phone us if you have a problem and we will do our best to help you
thru whatever it is that you are struggling with. Ph 094319080

Losing Your Sight What is it like to lose a great deal of your sight? I found this out quite suddenly when I de-velop0ed Maculate Degeneration which in my case was caused by a haemorrhage behing the eyes resulting the loss of my central vision. This mean I can no longer focus on anything. Colours become indistinct, everything and every-one become mere shadows. I can not recognize a friend or even my daughters. My ears become by “eyes” . A small group of acquaintances can be a lonely place when I can not see who they are. Because everything I see is a shadow of grey, people can be skeptical when I can see a dark spot on the floor but not them. The Royal NZ Foundation for the Blind have been very helpful in the beginning. Talking books have made up for my inability to read. Talking magazines give me the topical news. The talking clock and watch are invaluable. Very large specially designed cards allow me to while away time playing patience. Help that is not overpower, people saying who they are when we meet and special friends and family are my life line. I cannot thank them enough. Lou Roadley Maungaturoto

I’d like to introduce myself
My name is Tiger L.
I belong to Hayden Lupton
And he treats me very well.
But often in the holidays
He goes off to the beach.
And though I try to walk there,
It’s a place I cannot reach.,
I get bored staying on the farm
When he is far way
And so across the paddocks
I venture on my way.
I chase after a butterfly
And then a great big rabbit.
I try to catch a native bird
(I know it’s a bad habit!).
Before I know where time has gone
I’ve wandered much too far
And wind up in a stranger’s place
Hiding under their car.
The lady’s name is Margaret
And he is Uncle Fred.
I have a smooch of all their stuff
And clamber on their bed.
Lady Margaret has these plates and stuff
It all is really nice.
But I think it is a bit too posh
And it doesn’t smell of mice.
She takes me to the vet’s next day
Though she is fond of me.
(I’d tried to smooch her royal plates
And it ain’t her cup of tea!)
There really isn’t anyone
Who seems to know my face.
I’m feeling rather lonely
A cat lost out in space.
I have another car ride
(Not my greatest thrill,)
And end up in this groovy place
A cat retreat on a hill.
They give me heaps of food to eat
And lots of love and cuddles.
I even get to catfight
And play out in the puddles.
But luckily my owners
They read the Maungie Matters
And race up here to find me
Or my life would be in tatters.
So if you see me wandering
A tabby with white feet
Then take me to the Luptons’ place
And I’ll think you’re real neat!
This poem is based on a true story and the name of the char-
acters has been retained to protect the innocent (or at least
get our cat back). Thanks to Lady Margaret and Uncle Fred
for their wonderful hospitality (Tiger says ditch the dogs next
time) and to the wonderful people at the Animal Shelter in the
Brynderwyns. They do a fabulous job and deserve our sup-port.

“Was Humpty Dumpty Pushed?”
Many media commentators bemoan the scarcity of insightful investigative journalism in New Zealand's metropolitan dailies. In an attempt to address this I present this expose as an exclusive scoop for our own local publication.
Recent shocking revelations have rocked the foundations of the nursery rhyme world. Whilst it has long been be-lieved that:
“Humpty Dumpty, sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty, had a great fall All the kings horses And All the Kings men Couldn’t put Humpty together again”.
It seems a review of the case has thrown doubts over the accidental nature of Humpty’s untimely end. In an exclu-sive interview, eminent psychologist “Little Jack Horner” revealed “Without Doubt” Humpty was a victim. In a raw and fragile state he was put in a vulnerable position then pushed beyond his ability to cope he simply cracked up.
He maintains a more accurate account of the tragedy would be:
“Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty wasn’t happy at all That same old problem depressed him again What came first, the egg or the hen?”
He adds that, “although Humpty had been diagnosed with Minor shell shock, treatment providers failed to foresee the possibility of a total breakdown. An OSH investigation has shown that warning signs were not displayed on the wall and their report also notes, “allowing an egg to sit on a wall clearly breaches the egg safety code of conduct.” Charges have been laid against the walls owner who has been granted interim name suppression.
Egg Rights advocate and close family friend of the Dumpty’s “Mother Goose” instead lays the blame on All the Kings horses and men saying:
“The King was in the counting house, counting out his money, The Queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey, The horses were incompetent, the men were mean and grumpy, No-one seemed to find the time to put together Humpty Dumpty”.
Mother Goose’s view is supported by a former Sergeant in the “Kings Men”. He said “There is an attitude that if you’re going to make an omelette you’ve got to break a few eggs”
However, a spokesman for Horses and Men defended the department. A prepared statement said, “All reasonable steps to ensure a positive outcome were taken. However, lack of trained staff and inadequate resourcing means that some eggs inevitably slip through the cracks”. Additional training will be given and there is to be a review of proce-dure to minimise future egg repair failure.
In response to issues raised by the Humpty Dumpty case, the minister for fairy tales said today from the Beehive, “In the interest of egg safety we will be instituting heavy penalties for eggs found sitting on walls, ledges and shelves. This will send a clear message to all imaginary characters to make sure they put all their eggs into one basket.
The four and twenty blackbirds assert that the proposals are an insult to believers of nursery rhymes and have threatened to peck off noses in retaliation. The feelings of most though are best expressed by Goosey Goosey Gander.
“In nursery rhyme or nation Filled in law and regulation Many words are spoken But still some eggs get broken And as politicians ramble Eggs are getting scrambled Not for want of legislation But for want of will to save ‘em”.
I apologise to readers who might find this a bit “out there” but have you read the real news lately?? Another Worzel exclusive!

PTCA News
A major fundraiser that the PTCA is currently or-ganising is the Buy a Block campaign. For $40.00 you buy a metal plaque with your name and/ or business engraved on it. It will then be cemented on to the exterior wall of the new Gym-nasium extension. Your donation will contribute to new gymnasium equipment and to permanent shade shelters around the school. We are par-ticularly grateful to see local businesses partici-pating in this scheme. For further information, please contact Nikki Donaldson at the school of-fice (09 4318230).
Archives Board No 4 Installed The 1981-1985 Archives Board was presented to the school at Assembly on Friday 17 Feb. Head Boy in 1984, Todd Morgan, performed the unveil-ing honours. Our grateful thanks are again ex-tended to Margaret Mulholland who has tirelessly tracked down photographs and names of this, the most challenging era we have researched to date, owing to some gaps in our collection of photographs. Thank you, as well, to all who have helped in any way to enable this board to be completed. We are working hard to have a full set of boards installed in the hall for your interest and perusal at the forthcoming OHS Reunion. Events Calendar up to 31 March 2006:

Our AGM was held on the 13th of Feb and it was great
to see all positions filled. Mike Schimanski is our new
president with Tracey James as vice-president and also
secretary. Peter Cave stays as treasurer with Karla
Shadbolt as Women’s Club Captain and Colin Storey as
Men’s Club Captain. Heather Lupton is Publicity
Officer.
Business House will get underway shortly and Kenny Finlayson is organizing this. If you are new to the area and would like to give squash a go Business House is ideal. It is not too serious (though very competitive off court) and a chance to meet others and have a drink together after the game. If you are interested then call Kenny on 4318599. Subs will stay the same as last year and I will put out a
newsletter shortly with details.
So enough excuses get out there and start squashing! The
first tournaments will be here before you know it.
For more info call Kenny Finlayson, Heather Lupton or
Colin Storey.

MAUNGATUROTO GARDEN
CLUB February 15th the club had a wonder-
ful day out visiting Nurseries and
gardens in the Matakana area.
The Bromeliad Nursery Exotica was
the first stop with a huge number of
plants for sale.
The Protea Patch a nursery full of
Porteas and many other plants for
sale.
After lunch on the Matakana Wharfe
we visited Sally Greenwood’s extensive
garden with an interesting collection
of Dahlias. Some members became
lost on the way to the garden!!!
We then headed for Villa Mt. Tama-
hunga where after climbing a steep
bush track to the house, we could view
the terraced garden and Olives and
grapes growing on the hillside.
March Meeting another day out on the
15th. To be advised later.

MAROHEMO HALL NEWS
Hi, there doesn’t seem to be much to re-port from the Marohemo Area this
month! Remember that if you do have any news let Ted or Heather know.
As some of you will know by now the rally won’t be gracing our area this year which is a shame as it has been
quite a draw-card. It has also provided a great fundraising opportunity for our hall and we will miss this. There is however talk in the wind of a similar event being staged here so keep an ear to
the ground.
Remember that our hall is available for hire
and could well be the perfect spot for
that party to celebrate a wedding,
anniversary, birthday….
Our hall hire rates are very
reasonable.

PAPAROA GOLF CLUB
Looking back at last season, which must have been one of the kindest seasons on record and where those balls just kept bouncing, we can reflect on what was a good year for the friendliest little club in the north. The good crop of new members, who not only proved themselves to be an interesting bunch of characters, but who also achieved a good share of the silverware in the competitions, with Gayle Albert and Alan Martin both being winners
Results:
Ladies matchplay winner : Liz Crooks\ runner up : Lynne Causer Ladies 9-hole winner : Gayle Albert\ runner up : Christine Smith (bravo to our tireless secretary\ treasurer\ handicapper!)
Men's stroke play winners : Intermediate : Grant Ferris: Junior : Alan Martin: "D" Grade : John Saunders
Men's handicap champs. winner : Alan Martin
Men's matchplay winners : Intermediate :Grant Ferris: Junior : Alan Martin "D" Grade : John Saunders
Well done to all of the above and to all of the near misses, keep at that swing and better luck this year! A special thanks to all you guys who have worked on getting the course ready for this year and to all the ladies for their painting, and their new age colour scheme. Our new fairway mower is looking like just what we needed, our first machinery improvement in a little while, one of hopefully many improvements we will be making this season. I' ve mentioned the top job that Christine does, but there's another fellah who does a top job, (in between his other 44 commitments) and that is Vern Powell - our greenkeeper and bar manager (pretty important areas for a golf club, eh!). We hosted a level 1. coaching clinic for golfers who want to help beginners and juniors learn to play golf, something we will repeat later in the year. Which brings us to the next major happening at our club-- Opening Day! When; Sunday 5th.March.@ 10.00a.m. Where; Golf Road (off Golden Stairs Road from either Gorge Road or Swamp Road--from Paparoa-Oakley Road. What for; To play some fun golf, share a meal and meet some great people. Enquiries to Dave Churcher-4318 773, Lynne Causer-4318 050 or Christine Smith-4316 819
