The Lion part for me was the first week spent in Florida at the Calema Mid-Winters on my Formula equipment. We had some amazing conditions with winds blowing over 40knots on the last day, we only were able to race on day one and two on 10, 11 and 12. But it was some of the best racing conditions I have had at Calema. There was some very tight racing with the top Brazilian racers, myself and Taty. In the end I had a great time getting back to this event and seeing Tinho and Susie as well as catching up with all my other friends from the mainland and making some great new friends as well.

I returned to Maui and reported back in with Art, Barry and Phil on how the racing went and they were all very pleased with the performance and very excited for the Formula racing season for the new TR8’s. We were also very keen to start work on the next generation of sails and already have some new ideas in the pipeline to start for next years sails.

After this it was time to switch back to slalom mode with lots more testing and tuning of my slalom gear with Phil. We had a number of good days at Kanaha running buoys and testing out different fins, boards, and masts. I think in total I have tested around 40 new fins in March and have found some really good ones. We also had some early sessions down at the harbor on big gear with Werner from JP. He arrived on the 21st of March with some new proto type slalom boards. After some very good test sessions with him we have found some very good results on the new boards as well and have already started a second round of improvements.

March came in like a Lion and went out like a Lamb.

I also continued my off the water training with some solid gains made in the gym, on the bike and running. All the preparation is in anticipation of April and the first slalom event of the PWA season in Italy. It is coming up fast and my preparation and training base is building nicely. With a couple more weeks to go till I leave Maui I should be right where I want to be once I board that first plane out of Maui.

There was also some very special family time in the middle of the month with Lance celebrating his 8th birthday on the 19th of March we had some nice family parties as well as a great friends party time. His choice of interests changes rapidly and for this birthday it was almost going to be Lego’s again and at the last minute Skylanders came in and won out. He was very excited and with his great choice of lobster and steak for dinner the party was a great success!!!

The lamb part for me was the ending of March on the weekend where I had a chance to relax and reflect on the productive month of testing training and tuning. It is amazing how fast the year is going by but that by no means reflects the amount of work that has gone in to it, the results are starting to show and I am getting more and more excited to get my 2012 slalom season kicked off.

I hope that you all were able to watch my Formula video at https://vimeo.com/38391151 from the race in Calema as well as read my report and hopefully you caught my "day in the life" video as well. If not they can all be found on mauisails.com or micahbuzianis.com. Ok back to the water Phil is calling..........

What up, amigos?

If time flies when you are occupied, doing a bunch of windsurfing competition and training sure is a positive thing in life. My first travel for this month was to fly to the U.S to take part in the 2012 Calema Midwinters festival. It was an interesting event for me, as I haven’t been competing with the Formula big dogs and racing against Micha, Gabriel, Paolo and some of the best guys in the U.S. was new to me.

I really didn’t know how fast I would be, because it was my first time, and basically light sailors don’t go so fast on big stuff, but you will never know where you at, unless you go out and sail with them. I like challenge and that’s how i learn to be competitive ;). Somehow my formula TR8 9.2 and 10.0 sails didn’t arrive in time for the event so I ended up borrowing Rick Whidden’s TR8- XT sails. He had all of his sails in Technora but I prefer the monofilm. It’s just my personal feeling and I like monofilm better. Thanks, Rick, it was great anyway.

Racing went good. I just wanted to get top five but, hey, a sixth place is also not bad. Being on my first Formula event and competing with the best in that discipline is just great. Well I kinda know where I am, just need more training and some better fin’s and I’ll be hard to catch :) .

Flying back home after the event was uhmm, awkward this time: Rick dropped me and Micha at the airport I went to to the check in counter. They charge me 150$ for a formula board bag with just the boards inside. Pretty tight for American Airlines. Then as I was at the security check point and I had the fin in my hand because I couldn’t put it anywhere else. The security girl told me you cannot take this, what is it anyway? I said it’s a windsurfing fin made of carbon, and they are like checking the edges so the security went to another security girl and they where talking, and then they both looked and me and i started smiling. So one came back and I was all smiling, because it shouldn’t be a problem. I came with it in my hand, why can’t i take it back by hand carry?

So she came to me and said you have to check this in, sir. I was like I can’t, I have to hand carry it. I was pretty much smiling the whole time, giving them a happy face day and just being all nice, so the other security girl came. They had a little girl talk so they told me, okay you can only go with the fin IF, ooooh, if you show us your abs. So I am there standing with a blushy face smiling, just saying no... no... i won’t. And they are like, ’Come on, you look so nice.’ I just kept smiling and then they gave me the fin.. phew. Menh... what security.

Getting back on Bonaire was just so good. It had been windy and the wind kinda stuck there for weeks. Freestyling was the most I did on the Loco’s bra :).. Just love those Loco’s. And I had some small sessions slalom sailing with my TR8 7.6 in the afternoon when the wind got lighter. It was 15-20, and I could get the perfect settings of boom height, and lines positions and trimming it with the downhaul settings. Pretty much the sail specs on the sail is all you need to look at for rigging it right, and basically by adjusting the outhaul to suit your own sailing style. I use negative outhaul, it’s better for me, more power and more control.. :)

Well the days fly. I bought the ticket to Maui and just the other day I remembered sailing on Bonaire now I am in the plane heading to Miami-LAX-Kahului.. DAMN BRA :)

Aloha Maui is windy.

March was an epic month with nonstop wind and waves pounding the north shore all month long. I kicked off the month by surprising my dad for his birthday, bringing him over here from the mainland for a weekend of windsurfing action to start his season! I was bummed when I picked him up because the forecast seemed a bit light and I really wanted him to get a lot of water-

Spring is here!time, but karma seemed to be on my side and it turned out to be great 4.7 Ghost conditions with small waves, perfect for my dad to get back in the saddle and for me to blast around on my TR-7 7.0 all weekend long. We even managed to sneak in a quick trip over to the west-side and hang out with Barry for a bit on his boat, it was a perfect weekend and a great start to the awesome month ahead.

It seemed like just as I was dropping off my dad at the airport the rest of the windsurfing world was just arriving. The next day at Hookipa the beach was packed with all the top pros and it was evident that the photoshoot season had officially begun. Since I was little it has always been a dream of mine to be on Maui during the spring, I can’t believe this is actually my 3rd one in a row- yeesh where does the time go? I always enjoy when everyone’s here for photoshoots because you really feel the incredible energy of the windsurfing community.

It’s awesome to look out at the Hookipa lineup and see the world’s best riders on an epic day just killing it, almost 10 photographers in the water shooting the action, helicopters flying overhead, and wide-eyed spectators everywhere who can’t even believe what they’re seeing! Our photoshoots don’t start until April and I can’t wait for the whole team to arrive and to get on the water with everyone and the new toys! I’ve been really enjoying the 4.2 and 4.6 Mutant lately, and can’t wait to try out the rest of the 2013 line soon!

if its not a dolphin its a seal.... pretty funny..... he came really close to me.. i wanted to give it a hug! but instead i said hello gourgous and gave it a playfull splash.... in return i got splashed back... that was the funny part and the face expression it gave me when i did that... and of course my face says it all. I wanted out.. it wanted in ...who was in the way?.... the playfull splash may have been taken as..... "hey you..you in my way.... and the splash back... "what?..who u think you are... I want in"

When stuff starts happening in the domestic realm, it just grabs you and whirls you around sometimes. After years of calmly suggesting my Mother should move here so we can help her (she’s almost 97), she finally made up her mind and said, "Well, what are you waiting for? I thought I was going to move there!"

And so it began. The search for a new home that would be good for someone approaching the need of a walker or wheel chair, that would be close to hospitals, business activity, and a social life. By mid-month we committed and gave notice. Thus began the seemingly endless chore of packing and shifting and really not living in one place or the other for some weeks.

Moving also included the dispensation of a collection of MauiSails product that was maintained under my house. Masts, carbon and aluminum booms, some accessories, and a few cartons of sails, all needed to find a new home. After shifting that load to a new storage area in a more convenient location, the crew loaded and shifted the entire contents of our home in one box van load. Pretty easy, that part. Getting it all settled and sorted, ready for the momoccupation, that’s still a work in progress.

MARCHING INTO CHANGE

Art has been banging it on all cylinders with the new Mutant designs and the continued refinement of the Legends and Ghosts. With Camille and Casey here we are getting hot response every day and the tweaking is getting better and better results. Micah seems ready to race, Taty fully had his hand in the new Locos, and Phil is keeping busy checking them all out.

Cornelia has had to rest for some weeks. She got new coamings to support the spray dodger frame and soon will be getting the fabric cover for that. Three layers of corefoam laminated into the smooth curved shape were covered with heavy fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. Some filling and sanding and a coat of enamel and they are ready for the next stage. Soon we will be going to weather in dry comfort, main hatch wide open.

More to come.

Aloha,Barry Spanier

You always get asked about your local spot, “how’s the wind this time of the year”? I always tell people it’s windy in Maui all year round. When you’ve have lived here for over 25 years it really is windy in Maui all the time. Maybe a few weeks during January and February can be lighter, but generally, there is something in the form of wind, whether it’s for Formula, slalom or waves. If you want it, you can go and find it somewhere on the Island. This March has been super windy, no just 20 knot windy but over 30 knots of wind. The beginning of March we had some ballistic trade winds. So for those of you who visited Maui before in the hope of the super strong trades, but only got light 8-15 knots, this March was the time for you to be here.

We have great conditions for testing the wave sails and continue to enjoy the fruits of our labour with the TR8’s now in full force all over the North shore coast. When people see the TR8 on the water and rush up to us and want us to put them a quiver aside for pick up later, we know we have a good product. It’s been a good training month as well, working closely with Micah on all areas of testing/tuning and preparing him for the coming season.

Aloha,Phil McGain
