Voluntary standards used to improve production practices in many industry sectors

Not all biofuels are the same; certification helps to distinguish between good and bad actors.

The Case for Voluntary Certification

Stakeholder meetings held throughout the world

Thousands participated in the standards development through in person meetings and electronic discussion

Standard Setting: Community Driven

RSB Certification Systems: Central Elements

Separating these 3 central functions: avoids conflict of

interest, and

ensures comprehensive, consistent, credible, transparent, effective and efficient implementation of the different parts of the RSB certification systems

Need for feedstock-neutral approach – Biodiesel may be produced from many different feedstocks

Users want to be able to make a claim for a sustainable mix under a single certificate.

Rapid biofuels growth and high commodity prices emphasize the need for credible standards

The greatest strength of the RSB standard is its broad stakeholder support in the NGO, public and private sectors

RSB Tool includes a user-friendly, freely available, and scientifically credible GHG calculator for biofuels

RSB is in the process of beginning its first certification activities now

Conclusions and timeline
