MatterBy Brooke Elwell:)

I am Persnickity the Perfectly Perfect Panda. I am perfect at

all smarts. Today I will help you to learn about matter! Think about this while you learn: Matter matters! Why does matter matter? I will help you learn throughout

this presentation.

Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. The three states

of matter are solids, liquids, and gases.

Matter also has properties. Properties are characteristics of something you can

observe. Examples of properties are color, texture, shape, size,

buoyancy, and hardness.

What is matter?

What is mass?It doesn't matter if it's a solid, liquid, or a gas, it

all has mass. Mass is the amount of matter making

up an object. Mass is measured in grams or

kilograms, depending on the size of the object. You would measure object on a balance pan with known

masses.

This is a balance pan. I am showing

how you would measure mass.

I am measuring my earbuds. I start with 50 grams, and that was

way to heavy. I kept trying out known masses and eventually came out with

11 grams.

Solid

I am Paulie the People Smart Panda. People

are Solids. I am Persnickity's

LiquidStop your

shaking! Your getting my rice wet!

It is getting wet because it is

liquid.

Area

Area is the amount of square units that it takes to cover a surface. Area is measured in square inches, centimeters,

yards, etc. To find the area of an object, you would calculate the LengthxWidth. This is how you would find area.

Perimeter

VolumeVolume is the amount if space an object

takes up. You can calculate volume using LengthxWidthxHeight.

Elements of matter!☔️

And more info...

AtomsThe atoms of one element are all alike. They are the smallest particles of an element. Each atom has special parts to it. The nucleus is the center. Inside the nucleus are protons and neutrons. There are always the same amount of neutrons as protons. Outside of the

nucleus is a cloud. There are two shells to the cloud. The inner cloud can only have two electrons whereas the outer

shell can have up to eight electrons. To make an atom balanced, there will be

the same amount of protons, neutrons, and electrons. To make an atom

electrically charged, you would add more electrons because you can't take

away protons. To make an atom positively charged you will take away

electrons. On the periodic table elements are organized by their state

of matter and by the number of protons. For example hydrogen has 1

proton so it is the first element.

Elements

Elements are the building blocks of matter. They are made up of only

one type of matter. Examples of

elements are gold, silver, and oxygen. Elements are made

of atoms.

Mixture

A mixture is two or more types of matter

combined. Each type keeps its original

properties. Examples of a mixture are mixed

vegetables, salt water, and grape juice. A

solution is a mixture too, but it is blended

completely. A mixture or solution can be separated

by picking, filter, or by evaporation.

CompoundA compound is when two or more types or

matter combine chemically. All

elements combined in a compound lose

their properties when combined. Examples are salt, sugar, and

rust.

Alloy🏆An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements-

one must be metal. Mixing metal with another element

makes it stronger. For example, you would mix pure gold with

another metal to make it stronger that pure

gold.

Physical change

A physical change begins and ends with the same

type of matter. In a physical change, the mass stays the same. There are four types of physical changes. There

are changes in size and shape, change in texture, change in position, and change in state. Heat

energy and the loss of heat energy causes matter to

change state. 🚿

Chemical Change

A chemical change is when matter changes

itself. It always involves energy. You start with one

type of matter and end with another. An example of a chemical change is

copper acetate. It always involves energy.
