STATES OF MATTER1. SOLIDSParticles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position.

Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.

STATES OF MATTER2. LIQUIDParticles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another.

Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume.

STATES OF MATTER3. GASParticles of gases are very far apart and move freely.

Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

States of Matter

Label each as either diagram a liquid, solid or a gas.

1. 2. 3.

STATES OF MATTER4. PLASMAA plasma is a gas with a charge.Good conductor of electricity. Indefinite shape and an indefinite volume. Plasma is the most common state of matter in our universe.

Some places where plasmas are found1. Flames

2. Lightning

3. Aurora (Northern Lights)

The Sun is an example of a star in its plasma stateSTATES OF MATTER5. Bose-Einstein CondensateAt incredibly low temperatures needed atoms lose their individual identities and merge into a single blob. AKA: a "super atom"Pure SubstanceChemically combined/bondedHave fixed compositionWater is always H2O2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen

Properties that always stay the samePure water always freezes at 0celsius Sugar always occurs as a crystalPure SubstanceElementsMade of the same type of atomEx: CarbonOne carbon atomA chunk of carbonPure Substance CompoundsMade of atoms from 2 or more elements that are DIFFERENT from each otherCarbon Dioxide

++Oxygen + Carbon + OxygenMixturesPhysically combined.

Made of 2 or more pure substancesKool Aid is made of water, sugar, and flavoringall pure substances.

Homogeneous MixturesPrefix Homo- means the sameThe composition (chemical make up) of the mixture is the same throughout. If I take a sample at the top, it should have the same chemical make up as the bottom.Homogeneous MixturesExamples:Sugar waterCough syrup

Heterogeneous MixturePrefix Hetero- means differentThe mixture isnt mixed well or evenly distributed.

If you let the mixture sit, it will separate out.
