“The Sutcliffe Nine” Thank you for joining us at the Bear Bottom Restaurant. This year marks our sixty-first year of hosting lake lovers from this very spot. Originally built in 1959 by Mr. Eddie Bryant, the resort opened under the name the Holly Aire Resort. The original brochure is located in the present day resort office. The complex was constructed as a modern retreat; complete with air conditioning in each cottage and available for the fair price of $50.00 per week. Believe it or not, you could rent a boat, complete with motor, for $6.50 a day with the first tank of gas included! As you stroll through the resort now, you can still relive those days as one of the 12 original fishing boats, a 1959 Richline, manufactured locally in Richland, MO, welcomes you at the Boat Bar on our lakeside deck. The Holly Aire Resort operated through 1968, when it passed on to what would become a series of owners, sometimes operating as a resort, and other times as a private retreat. The present day incarnation was last owned by Betty Sue Davies. She operated the property as a resort for 17 years, and helped develop the resort’s reputation as one of the best venues for live music on the Lake. On August 1st 2008, our family, the “Sutcliffe 9”, dove in and began the campground and waterslide complex renovations you see today. Our love for the outdoors, as well as our kids’ wanting to spend most of the summer “bare”, became the inspiration of our name, “The Bear Bottom Resort.” While change is certainly inevitable, our desire is to maintain an atmosphere of clean, family fun, where parents and children alike can create lifelong memories together, is our main focus. Nowadays children may text rather than talk, and it seems TV’s are almost always in color. . . but the memory of a boat ride or the thrill of hooking the first fish of the weekend will ALWAYS trump the high score of any video game.
