Workplace Apprenticeships Continued investment in workplace learning has resulted in the growth and success of apprenticeship schemes across the UK. They address the need for essential skills development and performance expectations in today’s modern business environments. In the UK, over 130,000 businesses offer apprenticeships.

According to the Skills Funding Agency (June 2014) there were 751,900 funded Apprentices registered between August 2013 to April 2014

So, what are the essential components that constitute an apprenticeship? Typically, 30 hours per week of paid employment, knowledge and competency-based elements and skills which are key or transferable. Employers are incentivised to take on apprentices through funding. Course content is designed in conjunction with the Sector Skills Council.

For many existing employees and youngsters looking to forge a career, an apprenticeship is a great alternative to traditional further or higher education routes to work. From an employer’s perspective it provides an opportunity to start with a ‘blank canvass’; introducing the individual to the workings and culture of the company in a planned and progressive way. Managed properly, apprentices can contribute to the stability of the business and that all important competitive edge. For the apprentice, there are significant benefits that include being paid to learn, paid holidays, skills acquisition and a valuable qualification at the end of the contract.

The employer is responsible for induction, wages and ensuring the Apprentice has on-the-job training for the duration of the scheme that can run from 12 months to four years depending on the qualifications sought. Other responsibilities include:

Business benefitsTalent acquisition and staff retention are major challenges for many businesses. The cost to hire and train suitable staff can be very high so the organic growth and development of apprentices provides the environment to shape young people over an extended period of time. This allows the apprentice to grow into the company’s culture and develop stronger bonds of loyalty whilst fostering desirable attitudes.

Apprentices also address the need for home-grown skill sets and vocational training qualifications that are essential for the company’s growth and sustainability. In addition, for businesses where specialist skill sets are required, these can be developed to ensure business risk is managed.

The results of a survey conducted by Populas on behalf of the Funding Agency revealed the majority of employers found that apprentices improved productivity

Balancing in-the-workplace training and off-the-job learning ensures that all your apprentices receive the skills training they need to support them and your business now and in the future.

Fast Facts• Around 130,000 employers offer apprenticeship schemes in the UK• One in five employers are hiring more apprentices• The Government funds training for 16-18 year old apprentices – the employer pays the salary• Apprentices receive a minimum wage of £2.73 per hour – many employers choose to pay more
