ETHOS LUGGAGE DELIVERING QUALITY & INNOVATION
THE NEW TACKLE BRAND FOR MATCH, PLEASURE AND FEEDER ANGLERS
Welcome to Matrix, the new British tackle brand for match and feeder anglers of all abilities and pleasure anglers who use match styles and methods. The ethos behind Matrix is simple. To design and produce tackle which helps you catch more sh. Tackle which meets your needs and how you sh, using the latest methods, offers innovative solutions and provides excellent value.
As you will see when looking at the new Matrix product range, there are some outstanding products which offer a superior alternative to what is already available. We call it fresh thinking. Highlights include items from many different product groups ranging from rods and luggage through to feeders and small baiting accessories.
The Carpmaster rod range, designed for the largest section of modern match shing (commercial waters), includes a revolutionary feeder rod design and made-up transport solution. Since their launch last year these rods have received fantastic reviews by the angling press and anglers are now nding out just how good they are.
Horizon rods, developed for maximum distance casting, and designed in conjunction with top feeder anglers who often sh at 90m plus, offer anglers shing large waters stunning casting performance combined with sensible sh-playing actions.
Seatboxes are now an important part of modern angling, which is why we have developed the new Matrix Superbox. Based on popular 25mm legs, the minimalist black chassis oozes class and the drawer and tray units are some of the best engineered
examples you’ll ever see. To complement the seatbox is a range of hardware called Snag-free. These products
feature a revolutionary snag-free knuckle design which greatly reduces the chance of line getting snagged
in the mechanism. There is also a new pole roller which comes with a new feature called a ground spike. This enables you to use the roller directly at ground level, perfect for sheries where there is a small bank behind the peg.
As a company that looks at providing new solutions, we pay special attention to the smaller things too, things that can really
make a difference to your catch rate. The new Evolution Method feeders are a classic example
of our ethos. Available in two models these new feeders let you use larger hookbaits like large pellets
and boilies more effectively and the new ‘Squeeze and Feed’ mould, which can be used with almost all Method feeders, is quite simple the most effective
way to load a Method feeder we have ever seen.
Nearly all of the products in the Matrix range are unique. Designed and tested by us, for speci c uses, they offer an
alternative to what’s already available and in many instances a better sh-catching solution. Matrix - it’s fresh thinking.
The new Matrix rod range has received excellent reviews by all who have seen them. The range covers a wide range of match and general shing styles and has been developed for both UK and European anglers. There are currently four ranges. The Carpmaster has been designed for the latest match carp shing methods and covers everything from short range feeder work to long range Method feeder shing and also all oat methods.
The Horizon range is designed for long range feeder shing, primarily on large European waters where distance casting is essential.
The Ultron range covers a broad spectrum of oat and feeder methods and offers excellent value for money, whilst the Re ex oat rods have superbly re ned actions more suitable for traditional stick oat and waggler shing.
Finally there are two poles. The Finesse is a agship 13m match anglers pole designed for international competition shing throughout Europe where length limits are imposed. The Power X offers outstanding power and value making it suitable for carp shing in the UK and harbour (line to hand) shing in Europe.

BY MARK SAWYER [email protected] is the first look at what I strongly believe could be the best range of short-to-medium-distance commercial feeder rods ever to have been produced. The 10ft Matrix Carpmaster Feeder is the longest blank in the four-rod set, which has been built using a unique method that eliminates the need for a mid-blank joint. Obviously there are joints – two of them in fact, otherwise we would be looking at a one-piece 10ft rod – a great idea, but highly inconvenient. However, both joints are placed on the blank in such a way that they have very little inuence over the rod’s actual performance…and boy does it perform!Firstly, let’s look at the handle segment. This has been built with a 34cm length of carbon section, which is nished with a male spigot, which in turn ts into the single mid-section. Basically, it’s an elongated dolly-butt, but the length is crucial to the rod’s ease of storage, as well as adding to its casting potential. The second joint is straightforward enough, and has been formed to accommodate special Carpmaster quivertips (there are four available in the range from 0.75oz through to 2oz).These bespoke quivers are slightly shorter and slimmer in diameter than most standard
ones, but blend into the Carpmaster blank’s playing curvature so eortlessly that the jointed area is virtually undetectable. The positive consequences of having such a long single section in front of you are, at rst, pretty much unnoticeable. The rod feels crisp and light, and maybe even a bit too tippy for a feeder rod. A quick pull-round on the tip reveals a very impressive semi-parabolic action, with a seamless sh-playing hoop that shows no sign of at spotting. But all this is secondary when it comes to what happens when you actually start shing with this innovative little rod. Let’s start with casting. The tip speed the 10ft blank is capable of generating is nonsense for such a short rod and really does belie its diminutive stature. My guess would be that, at a push, the rod would be capable of casting a 30g-plus gram feeder 50 metres with ease.Bite registration on the shortened quivertips really does have to be seen to be believed. For those that have experienced savage takes when using braided mainlines with feeder rods – the Matrix Carpmaster delivers the same rod-wrenching bite indication – only with monolament on the reel!Next comes the blank’s playing action – it’s sweeter than dipping a sherbet-coated lolly into a jar of syrup before covering it with sugar, and will leave you drooling for more. Forget about non-lock-up parabolic actions, this rod re-writes the playing action book, and has the capacity to handle anything from a small F1, right through to a 20lb lump with equal aplomb.
It’s dicult to write enough eulogies about this rod, it really is that good. Take my advice; be it a case of beg, steal or borrow, you need to have a few hours on the bank with this dreamy little wand – I’m positive you’ll be just as impressed as I was. RRP £134.99 SSP £119.99
under-gunned, and didn’t have enough casting power. But once I had gotten used to it, I was surprised at just how pokey it was, and I found myself being able to launch a feeder a fair old way. What really surprised me though, was just how positive the bite indication seemed to be, with every fish seeming to rattle the tip right round, it was very impressive indeed. The rod’s playing action was completely flawless, and perfect for carp. And
although I have never been a big fan of short rods, it felt as though it would handle anything from the smallest to the biggest of fish with no danger of a hook-pull.Would I buy one? Well, although I thought that the rod was well worth the money, personally I would have preferred it with a much longer handle (18 inches), so maybe I wouldn’t invest, unless I could get it fitted with an extention piece.”
This week’s “Have your say” Angling Times reader is Raymond Poll, who hails from North London. Ray is a lifelong angler who enjoys club matches as well as pleasure sessions on a variety of venues.

Matrix is the all-new brand with
all-new ideas, and was shown
to me in its entirety by the man
responsible for it… Mr Ricky Teale.
Most of you will know or know of
Ricky, but for those who don’t he’s been
a formidable name in the trade for many,
many years. And, he’s
responsible for a great deal
of the developments that
present themselves before
your very eyes when you
visit your local tackle
shop. So, what’s new
about these rods and what
makes them different
from those sitting in your
holdall already? I wanted
to nd out.I joined Ricky on the
banks of the famous
The Glebe complex, in
Leicestershire, with the
primary focus of the day being to shoot
a Matrix DVD. However, this gave Ricky
and me the chance to have a proper
chinwag about the brand and each of the
new products that’ll be hitting the shops
soon. The Carpmaster range of rods is
mightily impressive and with three
versions available, at eight, nine and
10 feet in length, it was immediately
apparent these are tools designed
to cater perfectly for the modern
commercial-water angler.
Our shing on these venues has
changed considerably in recent times,
with tactics like the Method feeder
becoming more and more dominant.
These three rods cover all the tip shing

you could think of, from the shorter
version of the three for little lobs and
‘underarming’ on the pole line to the 10ft
model that’ll chuck a loaded feeder 35 to
40 metres with ease. In brief, this range
precisely covers the vast majority of
commercial-water tip shing that we do.
Anyway, I’d watched
Ricky catch a few sh on
the rods while we were
 lming, but I was itching
to have a go myself.
Eventually I managed to
get him off his box so I
could have a chuck and
catch a couple. It’s often hard to describe
a rod until you’ve had a go
with it yourself; it’s more a
‘feel’ thing than something
you can effectively
describe.As soon as I cast Ricky’s
feeder out I could tell the difference. I
could punch it perfectly straight, down
exactly the same ‘hole’ every cast with
no fuss, thanks to the power in the butt
section.Don’t think that these are tools solely
for carp, though; they’re soft enough for
skimmers and other silver sh that can
play an oh-so-vital part in your catches
during winter. However, I’ve saved one of my
favourite points till last. As soon as I
clapped eyes on these rods I noticed the
extended distance between the butt ring
and reel seat. “What’s the thinking behind that?”
I asked Ricky, who then proceeded to
dismantle the rod to pack it away and
it all became clear. While the rings have
been placed in the optimum position to
get the best from the blank, the position
of the butt ring is placed to align with
your reel’s spool for transportation –
very neat, and one of those brilliant ideas
that proved to me that Ricky has thought
about little other than setting this brand
up to be a very serious contender.
There’s also a very clever little
component referred to at the moment
as ‘the plug’. This basically does away
with any bands to secure your made-up
rods together. All you do is push the
designated sections into the recesses and
twist to lock in place.
There are many other products
available in the Matrix range, from other
rods, feeders and moulds to luggage,
a seatbox and accessories. As you read
this the gear will be hitting your local
stockist.

DEVELOPMENT & REVIEWS
To enable Matrix to produce tackle suited to the speci c requirements of anglers throughout Europe, we have a very active in-house design and development department. This is the direct link between our ideas and our manufacturers and gives us excellent control of both the design and nal quality of all Matrix products.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTAlmost all of the products in the Matrix range has been designed from scratch, using our ‘Fresh Thinking’ philosophy. The design process starts with an idea for a new product that will enable you to sh more effectively, often as a result of discussions with top anglers. This idea is then visualised by our design team and speci ed to deliver maximum performance. Initial prototypes are then produced for testing, adjusted and tested again until we are totally satis ed with their performance before going into production.
The result is a range of products which offer you a forward thinking solution. Rods which not only have
superb casting and sh-playing actions, but are also easy to transport. Feeders designed for use with bigger hookbaits, because that’s what anglers need as sh in match waters get larger. A Method Mould that automatically ejects a loaded Method with a simple squeeze rather than having to be pulled out. A brolly which offers more usable space than a standard brolly design.
These products are all a result of the having our own design team working closely with anglers to produce the very best solutions for match and feeder anglers.

ones, but blend into the Carpmaster blank’s playing curvature so eortlessly that the jointed area is virtually undetectable.

CARPMASTER 9FT FEEDER (SSP £124.99)
MATRIX is a new British name
in coarse angling that we’re
going to hear a lot more about
in coming years.
Aimed at match and pleasure anglers on
commercial pools, rivers and canals, Matrix
boasts a comprehensive range of kit running
from a sophisticated seatbox to swivels.
Three rod ranges are on oer – Carpmaster
for commercial venues (RRPs from £134.99
to £159.99), Horizon long-range feeder rods
(£189.99-£225) and general-purpose float and
feeder Ultron rods (£119.99-£134.99).
With air and water temperatures diving and
bites on the commercials becoming scarce, I
liked the sound of the lightweight, compact,
Carpmaster 9ft Feeder to test, and this
unusual rod turned out to be a winter winner.
An unusual configuration means you get a

1.62m (5ft 4in) fish-playing rod blank and
two, long, very fine push-in glass quivertips
rated at 0.5g and 0.75g. Plug these together
for a sensitive 2.7m (9ft) quiver rod capable of
showing the smallest bite and fish reel lines
from 3lb to 8lb on the commercial carp pools.
The main advantage of this configuration is
that the whole of the rod’s lovely fish-playing
action comes from a single section that plugs
directly into the short butt. Because there’s no
joint in this piece, technicians can engineer
the perfect playing action with a balance
between shock-absorbing upper ‘bend’ to
protect fragile hooklinks and power lower
down the blank to stop big match carp.
The main disadvantage is that it’s not as
easy to transport the rod ready ‘made-up’ in
a sleeve, as it would be with a rod of two equal
length sections. The rod is supplied with a unique EVA
Transport Holder Block which the short butt
and long main section plug into for transport
but I’m not a fan of this set-up. I’ll continue to
use the red elastic bands the postmen insist on
slinging on my drive every morning.
Fishing a 5lb reel line and 0.13mm diameter

enjoyable session on a tough, bitterly cold day.
The ultra fine glass quivertips show every

tip in place the strong undertow on the long,
oblong-shaped test pool kept pulling them
right round, even though I normally like to
fish a fairly slack tip in winter (pics below).
For fishing small bombs and micro feeders
weighing up to 1oz at up to 25m range, when
you really need to pick out the bites, it’s a good

also happily land carp into double figures.
There are also 8ft and 10ft versions.
Strangely, both cost an identical £119.99,
compared to the £124.99 for the 9ft model.
Dave’s verdict Smashing, sensitive commercial rod that
more advanced anglers will get results from.

EXCITING NEW CONCEPTAngling Times asked the man behind the new
Matrix brand, Ricky Teale, to tell us what makes
the new Carpmaster feeder rods special.
“Traditional short rods of up to 10ft have a
single joint in the middle of the blank. The new
Matrix rods have the joint just above the handle,
enabling the blank to achieve as near a perfect
action as is possible with a short rod.
“We have always followed tradition with the
construction of short rods, but when you think
about how the blank flexes, the centre joint is
positioned in totally the wrong place with
regard to casting power and fish-playing
action. The one problem with odd jointed rods
is that they are dicult to transport.
“However, our unique adaptor block now
makes it possible to carry the rods around
ready made-up. Each section is held straight
and firm, without rod bands, and the parallel
section configuration even prevents the
quivertips from bending over,” added Ricky.
This week Angling Times can at last exclusively reveal one of
the best-kept secrets in the tackle trade, the amazing new
carbon concepts that are…Matrix Carpmaster Rods.
This all-new six-rod float and feeder series has been
designed by former Preston Innovations front man Ricky
Teale for modern match methods on commercial waters.
The 8ft, 9ft and 10ft feeder rods reveal a contemporary
build pattern never before seen on any modern-day rod.
The unique design of the blank eliminates the need for a
traditional central joint, and although the rods do have a
spigoted area, it is positioned just above the handle. This
results in a rod without flat spots, because the joint is no
longer aected by the blank’s curvature when placed
under stress. These rods are said to oer a much-improved casting
distance and fish-playing action over traditional
two-piece blanks. All the feeder rods also come with a
revolutionary EVA transport holder block which keeps
the sections parallel and does away with the need for
rod bands.The 11ft and 12ft Matrix
Carpmaster Float rods have a
more normal two-piece
construction and are built on
high modulus carbon blanks
finished o with top grade
guides and fittings. Both
rods have semi-parabolic
actions which help to avoid hook-pulls and line
breakages. The 11ft version has the perfect
action for close to medium-range pellet waggler work, while the 12ft rod has slightly more power for longer casting.
All six of the unique Matrix Carpmaster rods should be available before the New Year, and with prices starting at £119.99 and going up to £139.99, I would expect them to sell like hot cakes.
show of the season.Leading the way in innovation are
the 11ft and 12ft Tournament Multi
Match Float/Feeder rods that have been
designed by the legendary Japanese rod
builder Nori Watanabe specically for
the UK commercial angler. The rods seamlessly convert between
‘oat’ and ‘tip’ modes by means of a
special spigot joint in the middle of the
blank’s top section. This allows for
the application of either a tubular
(oat) tip or quiver (feeder) tip section. Twin-topped
blanks have an impeccable build quality
and action thanks to unique new
non-twist torque carbon and Mega-top
quivertip material, proving conclusively
that innovative rod design matches
versatility with performance. However, perfection comes at a price,
because owning one will set you back

UP CLOSE
Matrix is the all-new brand with
all-new ideas, and was shown
to me in its entirety by the man
responsible for it… Mr Ricky Teale.
Most of you will know or know of
Ricky, but for those who don’t he’s been
a formidable name in the trade for many,
many years. And, he’s
responsible for a great deal
of the developments that
present themselves before
your very eyes when you
visit your local tackle
shop. So, what’s new
about these rods and what
makes them different
from those sitting in your
holdall already? I wanted
to nd out.I joined Ricky on the
banks of the famous
The Glebe complex, in
Leicestershire, with the
primary focus of the day being to shoot
a Matrix DVD. However, this gave Ricky
and me the chance to have a proper
chinwag about the brand and each of the
new products that’ll be hitting the shops
soon. The Carpmaster range of rods is
mightily impressive and with three
versions available, at eight, nine and
10 feet in length, it was immediately
apparent these are tools designed
to cater perfectly for the modern
commercial-water angler.
Our shing on these venues has
changed considerably in recent times,
with tactics like the Method feeder
becoming more and more dominant.
These three rods cover all the tip shing

you could think of, from the shorter
version of the three for little lobs and
‘underarming’ on the pole line to the 10ft
model that’ll chuck a loaded feeder 35 to
40 metres with ease. In brief, this range
precisely covers the vast majority of
commercial-water tip shing that we do.
Anyway, I’d watched
Ricky catch a few sh on
the rods while we were
 lming, but I was itching
to have a go myself.
Eventually I managed to
get him off his box so I
could have a chuck and
catch a couple. It’s often hard to describe
a rod until you’ve had a go
with it yourself; it’s more a
‘feel’ thing than something
you can effectively
describe.As soon as I cast Ricky’s
feeder out I could tell the difference. I
could punch it perfectly straight, down
exactly the same ‘hole’ every cast with
no fuss, thanks to the power in the butt
section.Don’t think that these are tools solely
for carp, though; they’re soft enough for
skimmers and other silver sh that can
play an oh-so-vital part in your catches
during winter. However, I’ve saved one of my
favourite points till last. As soon as I
clapped eyes on these rods I noticed the
extended distance between the butt ring
and reel seat. “What’s the thinking behind that?”
I asked Ricky, who then proceeded to
dismantle the rod to pack it away and
it all became clear. While the rings have
been placed in the optimum position to
get the best from the blank, the position
of the butt ring is placed to align with
your reel’s spool for transportation –
very neat, and one of those brilliant ideas
that proved to me that Ricky has thought
about little other than setting this brand
up to be a very serious contender.
There’s also a very clever little
component referred to at the moment
as ‘the plug’. This basically does away
with any bands to secure your made-up
rods together. All you do is push the
designated sections into the recesses and
twist to lock in place.
There are many other products
available in the Matrix range, from other
rods, feeders and moulds to luggage,
a seatbox and accessories. As you read
this the gear will be hitting your local
stockist.

REVIEW I NEW RANGE FROM A BRITISH COMPANY
Since Matrix was launched last year many of our new products have received critical acclaim from leading journalists for their quality and innovation.
WHAT THE PRESS SAY ABOUT MATRIX PRODUCTSTo be brutally honest we don’t produce products to get good reviews, we produce them to get good results for anglers. However we realise that many anglers are in uenced by reviews and see them as an indication of quality, so we are very proud that many of our new products have been so well received by independent experts.
If you are unsure about buying a Matrix product because it’s a new brand, rest assured that whilst we haven’t been around that long, we have certainly made a powerful impression with people who see more tackle in a month than most anglers see in a lifetime.
Designed for the very latest modern match methods on commercial waters, all Carpmaster models can be easily transported in a made-up state thanks to the positioning of the guides and the unique transport rod holder block.
The Carpmaster 8’, 9’ and 10’ Feeder rods have a unique design which eliminates the joint in the sh-playing area of the rod and provides more sh playing control.
EASY TRANSPORTCarpmaster rods are easy to transport in a made-up state. The transport rod holder block holds the sections parallel to each other and firmly in place without the need for rod bands.
At the heart of the easy transport system is the rod holder transport block. Assembling a Carpmaster rod is easy to do. Firstly remove the sections from the rod holder block.
All feeder rods have a separate short butt section which is easy to place on the main section. This has been designed to remove the main joint from the playing section of the rod.
The hook ring keeper has a fold flat hinged design which makes it easy to attach your hook, a link swivel, or feeder bead to.

CARPMASTER RODS
CARPMASTER RODSSince their launch in 2011, the Carpmaster range has been a huge success. Designed especially for the latest methods, Carpmaster rods are built to the highest standards and incorporate design features that make them easier to transport and better to fi sh with.
The outstanding feeder rods have a unique section design that uses a separate short butt section and a one piece middle section which takes the quivertips. This effectively removes the joint from the playing area of the rod for a seamless playing action. The short butt sections provided more power than normal short rods which improves casting accuracy and also increases fi sh-playing control when catching large carp over 10lbs.

The ‘Squeeze and Feed’ Method Mould is the best mould we have ever used. It works with a wide range of different consistency groundbait mixes and also pellets from micro up to 2mm.
Simply fi ll the mould, push the feeder into the groundbait(or pellets), turn the mould over, squeeze the base and the loaded Method drops out cleanly. FILLING THE MOULD
You can use groundbait or pellets in the ‘Squeeze and Feed’ Mould. The unique design enables you to use a wide range of different mixes (including sticky versions) and pellets up to 2mm.
LOADING THE FEEDERSimply push the feeder into the loaded mould. The deep design creates a taller mound of groundbait than other moulds giving the fish a more concentrated target to aim at.
RELEASING THE METHODOnce compressed all you need to do is turn the mould over and squeeze the sides together along the full length. This squeeze pushes the feeder out into your palm.
READY TO CASTBecause the loaded Method feeder is squeezed from the mould (as opposed to being pulled out) the bond between the groundbait and the feeder is intact and strong.
SQUEEZE AND FEED MOULD FEATURES1. The deep moulded ends accommodate most method
feeders and provide more movement for compression.
2. The unique design of the base, with central slots and compression sides, enables the feeder to be ‘squeezed’ out.
3. The small holes in the base of the mould prevent a vacuum forming during compression producing a better loading.

FEEDERS
4MM WIRE MESHThe wire cage feeders are made with 4mm mesh which makes them perfect for use with fine mix groundbaits.
FEEDER RIGGERS• Micro barbed eyed with in-turned point
• Hybrid round/crystal bend
• Medium wire with bronze finish
There are three hooks in the Matrix range which cover almost
all types of modern match fi shing. The Carp Baggers are
barbless spade end hooks designed for ‘bagging’, whilst the Carp Riggers and Feeder Riggers are out-turned eyed
hooks for knotless knot hair rigs. The out-turned eye has
been set at the perfect angle to create the most positive hooking
performance possible when using a knotless knot.
HOOKSRIGGER HOOK FEATURES1. The angle of the out-turned eye is vitally important for hooking
performance when using knotless knots and hair rigs.
If it is too straight (like normal eyed hooks) the hook will turn inwards too far reducing the chance of the hook point taking hold.
If it is too turned-out the hook will be in line with the hooklength and not create an attacking angle. Matrix Rigger hooks have the perfect out-turned angle which results in maximum hooking performance.
2. The bend of Matrix hooks is a hybrid combination of around and crystal bend combined with a wide gape. This offers the best solution for presenting all typesof baits and increases hooking performance.
3. The in-turned point is at the correct angle for deep penetration. The high carbon content of the steel wire, combined with chemical sharpening, produces a strong sharp pointthat is tough enough to deal with ‘bagging’ without blunting.

The Matrix range of pole fl oats covers almost all
match fi shing situations from carp fi shing with big baits to delicate bloodworm fi shing.
POLE FLOATS CARP The Carp Float Range will cover almost all modern match methods used on commercial waters. Build to withstand the punishment of catching big weights all models have over-sized tips for use with large baits and either carbon of fibreglass stems. Fibreglass stems (Series 3 & 8) go through the body and into the hollow tip.
PENCIL In recent years slim bodied ‘Pencil shaped’ floats have become more popular with both carp and silver fish anglers. The three models in the Matrix range covers all requirements. The Series 4 has a thick tip for using with large baits, whilst the Series 5 and 6 have slimmer tips for use with smaller baits and silver fish fishing. All have plastic tips which can be accurately shotted.
SILVER FISH The first of the new Silver fish floats from Matrix are versatile patterns suited to a wide range of styles. More floats will follow in this range during 2012.
The Series 7 is a versatile float for shallow water and has a good sized plastic tip which can easily be shotted. The Series 9 offers brilliant versatility and is designed for fishing on the bottom with a wide range of baits, whilst the Series 10 is designed for fine presentation and has a fibre tip for excellent sensitivity.
SIGHT TIPDesigned for fishing medium and deep stillwaters, the Sight Tip floats offer fantastic sensitivity in rough conditions. Both have long stems for stability and extra long carbon tips, with thicker plastic sight tips. These extra long, thin tips keep the body under the surface skim and combined with the long stems reduce the amount of movement on the float.

HIGH VISIBILITY TOPSAll Toss Pots have high visibility interchangeable tops, which offers several advantages.
The different tops change the rate at which feed falls from the pot, they also reduce the amount of bait spilled when shipping out. Another advantage is that the bright orange tops enable you to clearly see which way up the pot is at distance and also give a good visual indication when fishing tight to the far bank.
