Nhlapo represents SA abroad

KwaThema - Professional ball-room and Latin American danc-er Adonia 'Donny' Nhlapo (32) is ready to put is name, and that of KwaThema, on the map abroad.

The young man will be repre-senting the South Africa, along with his partner, Megan Walker (20), from Fourways, at an upcom-ing dance competition to be held in Boston, in the United States of America.

The pair leaves on February 14 and will compete in the Eastern United States Championships on February 17 and 18.

"This is a great honour and privi-lege for me, especially since it will be my fi rst time going abroad," he

says.Nhlapo started dancing at an ear-

ly age while he was still a learner at the Job Maseko Primary School.

At the time, his brother, Penwell Nhlapo, who is also a dancer and his former teacher, Pinky Mthet-hwa, coached him.

As the years went by, so his love for dance blossomed.

"I carried on with ballroom and Latin dance throughout high school.

"Then in 2013 while looking for a partner, Walker and I met and that is when our partnership began.

"Over the years we have com-peted in many competitions and last year, one of them was dancing

at the South African Dance Foun-dation Championship, which was hosted in Kempton Park.

"We competed in the ballroom category and managed to take fi rst spot, which has awarded us this opportunity," he says.

Nhlapo says this is one of those events that have the potential to open great doors for him and his partner.

And they aim to use the opportu-nity wisely.

"I am defi nitely looking forward to this and hope we will do well," he says.

After this competition, the local star plans to compete in the Neth-erlands.

KwaThema -The KwaThema Com-munity Health Centre will host a pregnancy open day next Friday.

Sister Vuyelwa Mahlangu says: “It is aimed at exposing pregnant women and residents to the different services

the clinic is offers.“We want them to stop using clinics

in other areas because they doubt that we are well enough equipped as we now have state-of-the-art equipment.

“On the day they will be taken on

a tour of the clinic and motivational speakers, dieticians and doctors will share health tips as well," she says.

“They will also tell them about the importance of starting early with ante-natal check-ups at the clinic."

Megan Walker and Ado-nia ‘Donny’ Nhlapo will compete in the USA next week. (photo sub-mitted).

KwaThema - The elderly people of Dlaulale Agricultural Co-operative have joined hands to help feed the poor residents in their community.

The project was started three years ago by Mapula Nhlapo (65).

She says she has always loved working in the garden in her back-yard.

“I believe in healthy eating and keeping fi t.

“I don’t trust some of the veg-etables sold in the supermarkets because they have chemicals which might affect one’s health negatively.

“I decided to start my own veg-etable garden. That way I know what goes into my vegetables."

She says she shared some of the produce with her relatives and poor neighbours.

“I felt that my small garden was not helping enough people.

“I decided to invite some of the elderly and unemployed people in the area to join me.

"We identifi ed a piece of land where we started the project.

“This was to empower them to

be able to support their children and keep busy during the day."

Nhlapo adds that most of the pensioned people in the area don’t have anything to do.

“They end up being depressed and stressed because they are al-ways on their own.

“Through the project we are able to keep them busy and share advice,” she says.

She says that once a month they cook their produce for the community.

Another member of the proj-ect, Fannie Masemola (36), says they also sell their produce in the community.

“The profi t is used to buy the seeds to be able to sustain the project.

Masemola says they are plead-ing with anyone who can donate working tools to come forward.

“We also need seeds, safety uniforms and a security fence.”

“The donation will help us to cover more households and cen-tres in the area,” he says.

The group can be contacted on 081 598 8164 (Fannie Mase-mola).Some of the members of Dlaulale Agricultural Co-operative.

Mzwandile Jongwe has his sights set on the township and African markets.

KwaThema - Mzwandile Jon-gwe (35) is breaking into the African fashion design market.

He is the founder of the cloth-ing brand One Day Sopopa, town-ship slang for "one day you will succeed".

He says that the brand was formed in 2010 while he was op-erating a programme called Youth Connection.

“Among other life skills pro-grammes we offered the unem-ployed youth, we also introduced the youth to the printing and fash-ion design industry.

“This was to empower them to start their own businesses and be-come leaders," he says.

He says that while working on the programme he came up with the idea of starting his own brand.

“I decided on the name be-cause it is a popular township slang aimed at motivating others not to give up on their hustle and to keep pushing until they suc-ceed," he says.

Jongwe says that working on his own brand has improved his business and marketing skills.

“I stay awake at night trying to come up with new ideas to im-

prove my business. “It was not easy in the begin-

ning, trying to introduce the brand to the market.

“I started by targeting the youth in my township, who re-sponded positively to it,” he says.

He says that it has not always been smooth sailing.

“When I introduced the brand, I had to compete with other repu-table brands which had been in the market for years.

“But I could not allow this to stop me from achieving my goal.

"I am a born 'hustlerpreneur'. I worked hard to make sure that the business grows.

“I had to make sure that the qualities of the clothes satisfi ed the clients,” he says.

He says that he lives for the success of his brand.

“I want to make my brand accessible to all and not limit myself by only targeting clients in the province but across the country, and want to eventually break into the African market,” he says.

Jongwe's fashionable brand can be seen on T-shirts, caps, golf tops, sweat pants and jackets.

Kwatsaduza - Nyaope addicts have invented a new way to get high while saving money at the same time.

The new method, which is called "bluetooth", involves an addict shar-ing his drug-fi lled blood with his peers.

Addicts mix powdered nyaope with water, suck it into a syringe and then inject the solution into their blood.

They then draw this intoxicated blood into the syringe and share it with fellow addicts.

Drug addict Nkosinathi Masi-mini (26) says he started smoking nyaope at the age of 17.

“I started sharing nyaope blood with my friends last year.

“We heard about it from friends and decided to try it.

“It gives us the best feeling, un-like smoking it [nyaope] mixed with dagga,” he says.

But he says he only takes it when he is desperate.

“I know that I am putting my health in danger by mixing blood and using the same needle over and over with others, but the crav-ings can be unbearable at times.

“It is better that I risk my life because I am eventually going to die one day,” he says.

Nkosinathi’s arm is covered with cuts from repeated injections.

“I no longer feel the pain be-cause I am used to it,“ he says.

He says that he has been ad-

mitted to a rehabilitation centre twice.

“I always relapse because I re-turn to the same environment that led to my addiction,“ he says.

Duduza police spokesman Ser-geant Harry Manaka says that they are discouraging the addicts from using the bluetooth method.

“This is very dangerous because they can contract different ill-nesses from this.

He encourages addicts who are ready to be admitted to a rehabili-tation centre to go to the Duduza Clinic.

“There are different stakehold-ers who avail themselves on Tues-days and Thursdays to work with the addicts,“ he says.

KwaThema - A hawker was caught selling expired groceries at a pen-sion pay-out point on Wednesday morning.

This was after one of the pension-ers bought peanut butter from him on Tuesday only to discover it expired in 2010.

She reported the matter to the po-lice.

The EMPD's Const Jerry Motlak-eng says they responded to a resident who complained about a man selling expired food.

“We found the man had displayed groceries that expired many years ago.

“We immediately confi scated ev-erything and arrested him,” he says.

Motlakeng urges residents to re-frain from buying anything before checking the expiry dates.

“The residents can report dubious businesses to the police,“ he says.

Ward 76 Councillor Zanele Nyakale says the hawker was taking advantage of the elderly.

“He was selling the groceries to the elderly people because he knows that they can’t read and won’t check the expiry date fi rst.

“He is putting people’s lives in dan-ger and he is not remorseful about it.

“The man was selling food that expired in 2010; there is nothing that would expire in 2016 or 2017 at least.

“The elderly who we spoke to me

revealed the man has been selling gro-ceries in the same spot since the begin-ning of this year,” she says.

She adds they are worried that there are people in the community who are sick and not aware of the cause.

“He told me that he was not aware that the groceries were expired.

“This tells me that he doesn’t care about his customers' health.

“We no longer want him selling anything in this community,“ she says.

EMPD traffi c wardens pose behind the confi scated groceries with ward 76 Councillor Zanele Nyakale (centre) and the ward committee members for health.

Kwatsaduza - Tsakane Old Age Home is asking for help in tracking down the family members of the late Kenny Nkosi (66).

Kenny died in December after a short illness, but his body has not yet been buried.

He was moved to the centre in 2015 after con-cerned residents com-plained about his poor liv-ing conditions.

The centre manager Phoko Mokubung says they found him staying in an old vandalised taxi rank in Duduza.

“The place was dirty,

unsafe and not suitable for anyone to live in.

“We immediately moved him to the centre and of-fered him an emergency bed while trying to fi nd his family.

“He told us that he was originally from Swaziland but could not remember which area," he says.

He adds that Kenny told them that he moved to South Africa at the age of 23 in search of employ-ment.

“He never went back home again and lost con-tact with his family.

“We tried asking around

the taxi rank about his fam-ily members, or anyone who might know anyone who knows him, but no one knew anything about him.

“We also tried to verify whether he had a South Af-rican ID from home affairs, but the results came back negative. He never applied for it," he says.

Mokubung says they are unable to bury Nkosi be-cause they cannot fi nd any of his family members.

“We are calling on anyone with information about his relatives to come forward and call us on 083 744 5170,” he says.

Volunteers get roof fi xedTsakane – Volunteers from the African National Congress (ANC) Ward 83 branch gathered on Sat-urday to help rebuild the Mokoena home, after its roof was blown away by strong winds last month.

Regional executive mem-ber of the party Nomadlozi Nkosi was also present, along with Ward 83 council-lor Busi Masuku.

Nkosi explains that the family, which found them-selves in trouble when the

natural disaster occurred, was forced to move out of the house.

This resulted in them hav-ing to fi nd refuge at neigh-bours' homes.

“The community tried to assist the family where they could but then we also de-cided to come on board.

Duduza – Local police have arrested a young man (21) for playing with a fi rearm, after he accidentally shot a pass-er-by in the left leg.

According to the po-lice, the incident took place on Saturday at about 10.30pm while the suspect was playing with a fi rearm.

“He was raising the fi rearm and showing his friends that he knew how to cock it open.

“The fi rearm suddenly went off, fi ring a single shot that hit a passer-by

He adds that the police responded quickly and were able to trace and ar-rest the young man.

Pedestrian shot accidentally

KwaThema - On Saturday at about 8am, a 24-year-old man was on his way to a tuck shop when he was approached by two un-known men.

One of them men con-fronted the complainant,

asking for his phone back. The startled complainant

said he did not know what the man was referring to as he only had his cellphone, which he showed to the duo.

"One man then allegedly showed the complainant a

fi rearm and the complainant handed over his phone.

"After that the two fl ed the scene," says police spokes-man Capt Thabo Sibuyi.

No arrests have been made but police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

KwaThema - Two armed men robbed a local man of his fi rearm on Monday evening.

According to the police's Capt Thabo Sibuti, the com-plainant was walking along Mohlabi Street, in Riverside, at about 6pm, when the inci-dent occurred.

The two men approached the complainant and one al-legedly took out a fi rearm and pointed it at him.

The second man searched the 53-year-old man and managed to take the com-plainant's licenced 9mm fi rearm from his waist.

Thereafter, the duo in-

structed the complainant to run away.

Police are still investigat-ing a case of armed robbery.

As no arrests have been made, anyone with any in-formation that can help the police can contact KwaTh-ema detectives on 011 812 4600.

Robbers steal man's fi rearm

KwaThema - A resident has lost his cellphone, wallet, bank cards and R600.

This happened when the complainant was allegedly attacked by three unknown men on Thursday evening.

Police say the 31-year-old man was walking along Nyaweni Street, in Masimi-ni Section, at about 10pm,

when the trio approached him.

"One of the men alleg-edly pointed a fi rearm at the man and the other two searched him and took his valuables.

"All three then fl ed the scene on foot," said Capt Thabo Sibuyi.

He added that they urge residents to be vigilant at

all times and to avoid walk-ing alone, especially at night or in the early hours of the morning.

Tsakane – The Zamokuhle Youth Career Centre (ZYCC) hosted its annual Tsakane Matric Awards for the class of 2016.

The event took place at the Ekurhuleni World Out-reach Centre (CWC), in Ex-tension Five, recently.

Among the prominent guests were the MMC of Human Settlements in Ekurhuleni, Clr Lesiba Mpya, Tsakane councillors, and Gauteng Department of Education (East District) representative Stephina Modisane.

Chairman of the ZYCC

Zamokuhle Mabena ex-plains that the ceremony was held in partnership with the Mzwakhe Ngomane Leadership Institute, Tha-mandla Construction and Tsakane local councillors.

The awards are aimed at making sure that more learners have access to higher education after mat-ric and at limiting the num-ber of gap years taken in the township.

“ZYCC has seen the im-portance for matric awards to be recognised at a local level to acknowledge those learners who performed

very well in their matric year, so that they can be motivated as they go on to tertiary institutions.

“It is also to encourage quality education in town-ship schools, which is why we give awards to Tsakane's top 10 overall achievers, top 10 learners per subject and the top performing teachers per subject.

“We hope that these awards will continue to have a positive impact as some schools have also adopted this initiative to en-courage their own learners,” he says.

KwaThema - The KwaThema police re-cently donated new school uniforms to learners from two primary schools in the area.

These were Ntokozweni and KwaThema primary schools.

Thirty-seven learners benefi ted from this initia-tive.

The donation was made possible by members of the Visible Policing Unit, Men for Change and Women’s Network.

The last two are forums made up of SAPS offi cers.

Also present at the handover ceremonies was the KwaThema Acting Sta-tion Commander, Lieut Col Mareketle Elsie Malapane.

“These noble offi cers dug deep into their own pockets to ensure that these needy learners are taken care of, especially in the new school year.

“This also forms part of our many projects that we conduct as a station, to continuously show our

love, care and support to the community we serve,” says police spokesman Capt Thabo Sibuyi.

Principal of KwaThema Primary School Marcus More applauded the ges-ture.

“It is really heart-warm-ing that these offi cers, de-spite their busy schedule, managed to come and visit our school and donate to these learners.

“These items will truly go a long way, hence we truly appreciate this,” he says.

Ward 83 Clr Busisiwe Masuku (left), Gauteng Department of Education, Gauteng East District representative Stephina Modisane and MMC of Human Settlements in Ekurhuleni Clr Lesiba Mpya.

Tsakane - It has been a great start to the year for 85 learners from Sizuzile Pri-mary School, who recently received brand-new pairs of school shoes.

The donation was made possible by a local mall in Tsakane, as part of its annual back-to-school drive.

Along with the shoes, the learners were also given sta-tionery.

Representatives from the mall, visiting the school dur-ing the handover, say this donation is aimed at helping underprivileged learners.

"As a mall, we recognised a need to contribute in a posi-tive way to communities sur-rounding our shopping centre.

"We have done this for many years by committing ourselves to supporting their educational initiatives.

"Providing these essentials is a tangible and practical so-lution to provide relief to the children and their families," says mall spokesperson Zani Dludlu.

School principal Somahle Mavi shares her appreciation for this donation.

"We are happy, while the

children are excited, as some started the new academic year without proper shoes.

"This has been such a bless-ing, especially since they called and offered to donate.

"Teachers then identifi ed those learners who were most in need, and seeing the joy on the learners' faces when they saw these shoes was so over-whelming.

"Thank you for this ges-ture.

"It is truly appreciated and will make a huge difference, especially since most of our parents don't work," she says.

Shopping centre gives back

. . .. THE SPRINGS AFRICAN REPORTER | www.africanreporter.co.za 7Friday, 10 February, 2017 OPINION

Today I'd like to talk to your parental units.Hands up who saves?

I can hear you all saying – don’t be silly you usually have lots of month left over after your money and that there is none left to save.

Or that you don’t have enough to live on, let alone save.

It might not be as hard as you think.

Here are some tips on how to start saving.

Write down everything that you spend

Record how much you spend – yes - every single last thing that you spend money on.

Use credit card state-ments, bank statements, etc. to help you fi gure out what you do with your money.

Once you have all your information, organise it into categories such as rent, medical, food, clothing, car payments, petrol, and entertain-ment.

Make a budget Now you know

what you are spending, it is much easier to make a budget for all your monthly expenses.

Do remember to budget in for things that don’t hap-

pen all the time, like getting your car fi xed.

If you are spending way more than you earn – then it’s time to fi gure out which are the non-essentials and start to trim them down a bit.

Plan on saving The aim is to spend less

than you earn. You should plan on sav-

ing between 10 and 15% of what you earn each month.

Choose something to save for

This is the fun part. You could be saving for

short-term stuff like having a holiday or a new car.

Or things like a comput-er, cell phone, new handbag or a fancy matric dance dress.

Then there is long-term saving like for your educa-tion, your retirement or a deposit for your own home.

Decide on your priori-ties

No point saving for a holiday if you know you are going to need a new car soon.

Of course, you can al-ways save for more than one thing at once, you just have to be even more care-ful and clever with your money.

Pick the right tools to save

Do some re-search and fi nd out which place is going to safely look after your savings and make

them grow. Most banks offer

automated transfers.This way your

money can zoot straight into your sav-

ings account at the be-ginning of each month and you won’t be

tempted to skip a month. Then sit back and watch

those savings grow!Sibo

Kwatsaduza - We are of-ten bombarded by motiva-tional messages encourag-ing us to adopt a positive mind-set but how often do we put this into practice?

How often do we accom-modate negative thoughts?

Did you know that your thoughts and emotions can impact on your physical health?

We spend a lot of time concentrating on things that are not going our way with-out fi nding ways around the problem.

If you are entertain-ing negative thoughts this simply means that you are channelling a negative en-ergy into your system.

This could lead to health complications like chronic stress which upsets the body.

We tend to give up on things with the fi rst encoun-ter with a challenge.

We opt to take the sim-plest way out by giving up because we doubt our strength and fear failing.

There is nothing wrong with failing to achieve a goal.

Some of the most suc-cessful people in the world failed but never gave up.

They fought hard for their dreams until they made it.

They never threw in the towel and labelled them-selves as losers.

They are still working and fi ghting to the core to keep their dreams alive.

An upset body is not productive; nothing good comes out of a negative mind-set.

Have you ever thought of adopting a positive life-style?

This comes free; all you need to do is occupy your-self with positive thoughts.

This will manifest into leading a positive life and attract positive energy.

It will boost your well-being and makes you glow with health and it will rub off on the people around you.

This should be taken as a

learning curve.Take a few steps back,

evaluate where you went wrong and try to work on the problem again.

Start believing in your own strength and push harder, with tears in your eyes, until you succeed.

We are all born winners. The journey to success is

not paved on a smooth road; but there will always be thorns and turbulence, but hold on.

Positive energy boosts well-being and makes you glow with health.

Your positive vibes im-pact on everyone around you.

Always aim for a good day and challenge yourself to get on the positive side of every grey middle zone.

Look yourself in the mir-ror every morning and tell yourself that you are beauti-ful, talented and a winner.

The positive attitude will bring good in your life.

When the going gets tough, toughen up.

Tsakane – Local rapper Lindokuhle Njokweni Hlatshwayo (20), better known as Saint, has always had a love for hip-hop music.

He started his music jour-ney in 2011 but only under-stood the art in 2012 after his father died.

It was during that tragic time in his life that Saint was able to use music as an escape from the trauma.

Though he has been infl u-enced by Teargas and Drake, he says his current musi-cal style is mostly swayed by his life experiences and Rapid Lebron, a local rapper from his township.

In mid 2012 he released his fi rst track, titled For the Hood, featuring Payne.

Describing his music jour-ney, Saint says: “It’s truly amazing. I’m learning a lot

each day.“Most importantly, it’s

helping me grow both as a person and as an artist and I’m happy I chose this.”

He describes his music as being inspirational and heartfelt because he writes from the heart and tries to put his feelings and emo-tions into a record.

Being a dedicated artist, Saint wants to fi nd his music on commercial radio sta-tions, the press, television, billboards and charts.

He has recently released his mixtape, titled The Out-come, which is available on hard copies.

Planning for the future, he is working on a few ideas, and no doubt the future looks bright.

He has performed around the whole of Tsakane, once in Witbank and in Soweto.

“I see myself one day per-forming at Maftown Heights among the greats,” he says.

He would love to get the opportunity to work with great artists, such as Tella-man, Kyle Deutch, Kwesta, Tweezy, Ruff and Gemini Major.

Behind the music this young man is a normal, cool guy who enjoys chilling with his friends.

His hobbies include watching series and listening to music.

“This year my supporters should expect nothing but greatness from me,” he says.

For more information on Saint he can be found on 074 508 9096, Facebook: Lindokuhle Saint Hlatsh-wayo, Twitter: @yourboii-saint, Instagram: @yourboii-saint, Fan page: Saint The King.

Big plans for local rapper

Moganedi the entertainerKwaThema – Leago ‘Equiv Smalz’ Mo-ganedi is a 16-year-old from KwaThema who says entertainment is where his heart belongs.

He loves rapping, acting and presenting and, as a result, last year he was able to join an advertising and acting agency to make his dreams a reality.

"I am into entertainment and started rap-ping when I was in Grade Eight. However, I stopped for about three years then went back to it again last year.

"Now I have a song which I released in December produced by Masikela ‘Krazy’ Motsai and Thabo Mopohlo, of Soon Pro-ductions, and the response I have received has been overwhelming.

"This is not the only song I have worked on, there are many others," he says.

Moganedi says when he raps he is inspired by what is happening around him and he

hopes to be one of the rappers in South Africa to bring change and put more focus on lyrics so that they can have more meaning.

Leago ‘Equiv Smalz’ Moganedi.

Poems to crush social illsKwaThema -Young poet Edgar Masha-ba (22) is using his talent to fi ght social ills.

He started writing poetry at school when he was 13 years old and has never looked back.

He says he was motivated by his English teachers to write and perform poems.

“Poetry has allowed me to be able to speak my mind on issues such as social ills," he says.

Mashaba believes poets are the eyes and mouths for those who cannot speak for themselves.

“We communicate the seen and unseen situations.

“We are able to speak out on behalf of those who can’t speak for themselves,” he says.

Masha is working on his fi rst offi cial al-bum titled Visions of a Born Free, which is due to be released later in the month.

“I chose the title because often born frees are labelled as absent minded and not being in touch with the challenges of the country."

Mashaba says the album covers poems on some of the challenges that South Afri-cans face on a daily basis.

“They include rape, women and child abuse, crime, teenage pregnancy, dropping out of school and xenophobia.

“It motivates and encourages my listen-ers and victims that there is a better day ahead to change the way we see things and react to situations.

“People from all walks of life will be

able to relate to the album,” he says. Mashaba can also be spotted on the

small screen presenting Vision and En-counter on Tshwane TV.

“The platform has offered me the op-portunity to improve my craft as a public speaker.

“I am able to express myself better than when I fi rst started,” he says.

He adds that the video of his upcoming album is shared on YouTube.

Edgar Mashaba aims to fi ght social ills through poetry.

The Infi ltratorDVD review

Reviewed by: Samantha KeoghReview made possible by: Times Media Films

This crime drama, based on the autobiography of the same name by Robert Mazur, takes a harrowing look into the world of Pab-lo Escobar’s money laun-dering and the man who uncovered the operation.

Mazur was a US Cus-toms special agent who, during the '80s, infi ltrated Escobar’s organisation by going under cover as a corrupt businessman offer-ing to help do Escobar’s "washing".

Using the alias Bob Musella, he pretended to have played a pivotal role in laundering money for smaller drug lords, which then allowed him to in-fi ltrate one of the world's largest cartels.

Gaining the trust of in-creasingly “bigger fi sh”,

he was able to gain access to the Colom-bian’s cocaine busi-ness as a money laun-derer, which in turn led to the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce Inter-national.

The Infi ltrator is a gritty account of the danger and violence inherent in the world of money laundering and the risks taken by undercover agents who are prepared to die to eradicate crime.

At a time when Escobar was respon-sible for the supply of about 80% of the cocaine being taken into the USA, Mazur and his team of undercover agents were responsible for 100 indict-ments and an estimated 3 100 pounds (1 400kg) of cocaine being seized.

The Infi ltrator in a mix of interesting facts, tense moments and a feeling of victory for the good guys in an area where the crimi-nals so often triumph.

For anyone who enjoys true crime, mafi a-type movies, this is an excellent addition to your collection.

Cricket development in townshipsDuduza - Cricket SA has formed new cricket hubs and Regional Per-formance Centres (RPC) in town-ships across the country.

Head coach and former Easterns fi rst-class cricketer Tshepo Mofokeng says the initiative is aimed at develop-ing quality African cricket players.

“We are working towards develop-ing and maintaining effective cricket structures from the grassroots level to the senior structures.

“This will also broaden access to the game among the disadvantaged black communities.

“We are focusing on providing the

schools with access to the facilities."These new hubs have helped town-

ship children take part in the sport. “We have 64 boys and 48 girls from

12 primary schools and fi ve high schools in the area.

“In 2016 we managed to produce nine national players in the school cricket tournaments.

“Two girls were also selected and this is a big achievement for us.”

He says they want to remove the children from the streets and drugs by keeping them busy playing sport.

He adds that the hub also offers courses to the players who want to

become umpires, scorers, coaches, ad-ministrators and cricket managers.

Mofokeng says one of the chal-lenges they face is that parents and the community cannot support the teams when they play away from home.

Cricket, he says, is regarded as a game for the privileged.

“We have 12 primary schools that play the sport in the area with only four primary schools that feed to the Duduza Cricket Hub.

“We also have fi ve high schools and only four of them feed to the hub.

“We are encouraging other schools in the area to participate in the hubs."

KwaThema - The KwaThema Dis-ability Sports Academy is grateful after having recently received a donation of brand new sporting equipment.

The team received the donation of the goods on January 25.

According to chairman of the academy, Aubrey Mathibela this was all made possible by the Gauteng

Department of Sports."The equipment was handed to

those teams who have been perform-ing well.

"We are truly grateful for this as it will help in training our athletes and improving their standards.

"Ten athletes from our group have also been selected to join high performance centres. On Saturday,

they will be going to perform at Germistion Stadium in preparation of upcoming national competitions," he says.

Mathibela thanks the department for thinking of them and helping to fi nd better ways to improve the training and performance of their athletes so they can compete locally and internationally.

KwaThema - Five local tennis players from the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy are preparing to go and visit Soweto.

The purpose of the trip is to at-tend a two-day camp, from Febru-ary 25 to 26, which will be hosted at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre.

These athletes range from the junior to senior phase and include Isaac Mthombeni, Njabulo Sen-gwayo, Thapelo Motsapi, Simon Mbonani and Sibusiso Khuzwayo.

"On the fi rst day of the camp, the selected tennis players will be training.

"And on day two, there will be selection for those who can com-pete in the SA Open Tournament.

"My wish is for at least two or three of our players to make the cut," says chairman Aubrey Mat-hibela.

The youngest of the pack to be going to Soweto is Sengwayo, who says it's a great feeling to be going to the camp.

Mthombeni, on the other hand, says it is an opportunity for them as players, because it is a chance to prove themselves.

"This camp could award us a chance to qualify to participate in local and international tourna-ments.

"We are therefore looking for-ward to the experience and perfor-mance," he says.

He adds that other young people living with disabilities should come and join them.

"There are plenty of opportuni-ties, especially through sports," he says.

The team practices from Mon-day to Friday between 3pm and 5pm, at the KwaThema Stadium.

New Kia Sportage worth considering

Updated Corolla celebrates 50 yearsTHIS year marks 50 years of the Toyota

Corolla. It is one of the best-selling vehicles in motoring history with the previous generation

selling around 45 million units worldwide. Just over one million of those were sold in South Africa. Now in its eleventh generation, which was launched back in 2013, the Corolla has been given a refresh and I travelled to the Western Cape to try it out.

→ STYLINGI’m not going to waste your time, I like it. I find

that the front-end with its newly designed grille and sleeker headlights, which features daytime running LEDs on higher spec models, gives the car a more modern look.

The bonnet has also been raised and the bumper corners have been deeply sculpted to give the car a more modern look. At the rear, the car has been given new LED tail lamps as well as some chrome inserts to enhance the styling and overall width.

→ INTERIOR The designers have also given the Corolla a

few improvements on the inside. For example,

the instrument panel has been updated with a layered structure that hides joins, along with a redesigned climate control panel and circular air vents.

Other upscale touches include a piano-black centre-cluster surround and chrome plated ornamentation. On Prestige models, the touchscreen infotainment system has been increased from 6.1-inches to seven inches for better viewing and usability.

I also found the spacious interior to be quite pleasant. The materials used throughout have a sense of quality about them, which has been brought abut by the combination of good plastics as well as soft touch materials.

→ UNDER THE BONNETAs before, the Corolla will be offered with three

tried and tested VVT-i petrol engines and one frugal diesel which comes in the form of a turbocharged 1.4 D-4D. As for the petrol motors, well they range from a 73kW/128Nm 1.3-litre, a 90kW/154Nm 1.6-litre and the range topping 103kW/173Nm 1.8-litre.

The diesel model with its 66kW and 205Nm

> JUSTIN JACOBS is my pick of the bunch tough. It not only has the power advantage, but also sips diesel at an average of around 5.0 litres/100km. A six-speed manual gearbox can be found throughout the range, however, the 1.6 and 1.8 models can also be had with a CVT depending on the trim level selected.

→ ABOUT THE TRIM LEVELSThere is a Corolla for just about every need. Toyota

is offering a choice of three trim levels to choose from. Each builds upon the next one with added comfort and safety features. The Esteem models are the entry level units and feature the items such as steering wheel controls, central locking as well as ABS and a number of airbags. Prestige models add items such as the touchscreen infotainment system, leather trim and cruise control. Finally the top spec Exclusive, only available on the 1.8, features niceties like push button start, keyless entry, auto wipers and lights, and a TFT colour screen in the instrument cluster.

→ VERDICTThe Corolla remains a dominant force within the

market, however, sales figures have shown that the lower priced tenth generation Quest continues

to outsell it on a month-to-month basis. This is because Toyota is trying to re-position the Corolla as a more luxury-based alternative whereas the Quest is better suited for fleet usage.

The Corolla definitely has appeal in terms of styling as well as an impressive ride quality. It is clear that someone at Toyota is copying notes from Lexus, which is a good thing no doubt.

Last year, Kia Motors south africa introduced us to their radically revamped sportage. I remember seeing pictures of it floating around on the internet and being really impressed. the sportage is an important car for the brand as many south africans have taken ownership of the previous model, which it understandable.

the sportage looks good, the interior is classy and the engines are impressive. Does this new one live up to the standards set by its predecessor? Well, when it arrived at the Autodealer office, I grabbed the keys to find out.

On the outside, Kia has adopted a rather brave design for the front end. I like the prominent facia with its big grille which looks as though it’s grinning. It’s modern yet classy as well as easily identifiable.

Down the side, the sportage genes really shine through with its angular design and somewhat sloped roof line. It is the rear end that I fancy the most. I love how the slim tail lamps are joined together by a strip that runs the full width, while the turn signals and reversing lights are separate,

located lower down which add more visual weight. the sportage Gt-Line I tested also features

chrome detailing as well as dual exhaust mufflers and a metal-effect rear underbody diffuser for a sportier appearance.

On the way back home to Witbank from our offices in Boksburg, I got a chance to not only experience the quality interior but also the ride. as for the former, I was impressed. Kia has used many high quality materials and seeing as the Gt-Line is the range topper, all the toys you could possibly wish for.

I had a centre mounted infotainment screen with navigation, a wireless smartphone charger, which incidentally failed to charge my iPhone 7, heated and air-conditioned front seats and even heated rear pews. there were also many buttons on the newly designed steering wheel, which controls the radio as well as the menu and phone functions.

Interior space is also adequate inside in terms of head and leg room, while the rear tailgate on the Gt-Line is powered for added convenience. the boot is large, 503-litres to be exact. Kia has also improved the noise cancelling refinement, which means noise levels within the cabin are kept to a minimum.

as for the engine, well there are a few options

to choose from but my tester was fitted with the 1.6-litre turbocharged unit. It delivers 130kW and 265Nm of torque. add to the mix a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and aWD, you should have a real sporty sUV on your hands right? Well, not quite.

With the added aWD system in place, the sportage feels a bit heavy and the gearbox is not the smoothest or fastest one out there, even in sport mode. that said though, out on the highway the Kia’s performance is noteworthy. In eCO mode, I managed an impressive 6.6 litres/100km on the highway and an average of 8.5 litres/100km over my test week.

after spending time with the car, I really did like it; sure it has its flaws but it makes up for it in style, quality and features.

One thing I really liked was the look of the

New Kia Sportage worth considering19-inch wheels, which I also tended to hate at time in terms of functionality. each time I drove the car around town, I felt as though there was a pothole just waiting to ruin my day. I also found that with these big wheels, you are somewhat limited to exploit the aWD and centre diff-lock as it would be silly to venture out into areas that demand those features with hardly any rubber on the tyres.

that said though, the sportage is happy to skip around Sandton and definitely won’t look out of place there either. It carries a sandton price tag as well, the Gt-Line comes in just shy of r600 000, but before you gasp and turn the page, remember it comes fitted with many standard features likely to command a substantial premium on its German rivals. Is it worth considering? absolutely.

VW EMISSIONS SAGA A MERE BLIP COMPARED TO FORD KUGA FIRES

Congratulations on winning R250 courtesy of Williams Hunt Randburg. Phone: 011 889 0722 to collect. Winnings not collected within 30 days of publication will be donated to charity. Winners need to produce a valid form of identification to claim prize.

Dear Editor

Which is more serious, Volkswagen lying about its car’s emission figures, or Ford selling self-igniting Kugas? Having recently read a number of newspaper and magazine articles, then watching an eNCA documentary featuring Ford SA’s CEO and a number of ‘customers’, I am shocked by the cavalier attitude of Ford South Africa and its parent company in the USA towards these customers.

As the interviewer asked, “don’t South Af-rican’s lives not matter?” Whilst on a recent

visit to KwaZulu-Natal, I became aware of how popular the Kuga was down there, then read with shock in a Sunday newspaper that owners couldn’t give their cars away, least of all at Ford dealerships, where Ford South Africa has appar-ently ‘instructed’ dealers not to accept Kugas as trade-ins on other Ford products. In other words, these vehicles have become worthless. My wife is in the process of looking for a new compact SUV, and the Ford Kuga was ‘top of her list’, but no longer. She wouldn’t touch a Ford with a barge pole after seeing and reading the numer-ous articles about Ford South Africa’s appallingly insensitive behaviour towards its customers, who

have suffered not only the extreme trauma of being in a motor vehicle that caught fire, but then receiving zero assistance from the parent company.

Volkswagen was taken to task for ‘being naughty’ and fudging fuel emission figures, resulting in valu-ation plummeting on the world’s Stock Exchanges. As far as I know, no one died from this ‘fib’ whereas Ford has had numerous Kugas self-ignite, causing at least one death, yet no one seems particularly con-cerned about this major design-cum-safety defect.

Surely, a life-threatening, self-combusting vehicle is a far more serious ‘crime’ than one that emits slightly more pollutants than its manufacturer said it would? Priorities seem to be skewered here. Why have seat-belts, airbags, side impact bars, ABS and all the myriad other safety features now become standard in virtually all modern vehicles, yet Ford continues to produce a self-igniting Kuga and appears not to be held accountable?

Ford should be sued and ordered to fully reimburse every owner of a burnt-out Kuga (with costs), and ensure that all owners, who wish to ‘get rid’ of these potential death-traps, get substantial ‘trade-ins’, or their money back, for having trusted in a Ford product’s safety. Anything less would be a travesty of justice.

The South African authorities should order Ford to recall all these vehicles en masse, until such time as Ford South Africa can offer unconditional guarantees that this fault has been fully resolved.

Finding the 2017 COTYTo see the latest pics and videos go to www.autodealer.co.zaOpiniOn

www.autodealer.co.za

- Ziphorah Masethe

The South African Car of the Year competition has a rich history, with winners stretching back decades. The 30-odd year old competition has seen arduous testing by many of the best local motoring media since its inception, and 2017 was no different. But before I get to the 2017 instalment, let’s have a look at where it all started.

For those who can remember, the year was 1986 when the first official Car of the Year was crowned in South Africa. That car of course was the Toyota Corolla Twin Cam. Since then, we have seen brands from all over the globe take the title and in one unique instance, share the spoils.

Brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Porsche, Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Audi, Renault, honda, Mazda and hyundai are all former winners and often feature as finalists too. The competition is the most prestigious of its kind in South Africa and continues to evolve as quickly as the media and automotive industry on which it is based.

This year, I was honoured and indeed privileged to have been nominated by my peers as one of the jury members for the competition, which started with ten finalists announced late in 2016. By the time the testing days came around, the 28 jury members had nine cars to put through their paces over the two-day testing period.

The one car missing was the Mazda CX-3, a small crossover that has impressed motoring media around the globe. however, Mazda South Africa took the decision to not enter the vehicle in to the competition. Their reasons were varied and considered by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) over the weeks leading up to the testing days.

In the end, the SAGMJ accepted the wishes of

Mazda to not be involved in the 2017 edition. I found this decision to be quite bizarre as the CX-3 is a fantastic product and certainly the right type of vehicle for the modern iteration of the competition.

having accepted the fact that there would be nine vehicles from which we had to pick a winner, we set off from the Velmore hotel in Centurion on Day 1 of testing, and headed to the updated Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit to conduct several tests on the finalists.

Now before we are accused of putting everyday driving machines through their paces on a racing circuit, hear me out. The only reason that a track is used and has been used over the years is to

provide the jury members with a safe, controlled environment to test things like braking ability, agility, handling, manoeuvrability and indeed the technology and engineering that has been integrated into each vehicle.

After completing things like a 50km/h emergency swerve test, a 60km/h emergency braking test, chassis control on a small circuit and indeed the efficiency of the electronic stability programmes and other safety systems over a short section of the iconic track, we were ready for Day 2, which was where we drive all nine cars back-to-back over a set loop on the road. This is where we could see how each vehicle copes on the road.

There was even a section of gravel available if we wanted to test out how well the SUVs coped in a mild off-road situation.

After the two days of testing, we then had to vote. For this year’s competition, the MAPO-supplied

tablets now featured a new electronic scoring system which gives each judge 12 categories from which to score each vehicle on a scale of 1-10.

The tricky part is that we are restricted to a certain number of 1, 2, 3 scores and a certain number of 8, 9, 10 scores. This meant that hours of thought had to be put in to which vehicle(s) would get the higher scores and in my opinion, will make the winner at the end of the day that much more deserving.

Now it’s simply a waiting game. On the 15th of March, we will discover who will be crowned the 2017 Wesbank SAGMJ Car of the Year, until then, it is pure speculation.

The 2017 installment of the Wesbank SAGMJ Car of the year competition has been one of the best in recent memory.
