Henri Matisse
Painter
1869-1954
We are going to make a self portrait that is inspired by the “paper paintings” of
Matisse
STEP ONE
• Use the construction paper on your table to draw and cut out ORGANIC shapes like Matisse’s.
• You must keep everything you cut out, even the scraps!!!
• Remember, ORGANIC, means shapes that are found in nature.
STEP TWO
• Glue down everything you have cut out on the sheet of white paper you are given.
• Use glue sticks.
STEP THREE
• Use the white paper you are given. Draw a large picture of your FACE,NECK, and SHOULDERS.
• Remember, Matisse worked in abstract art too. Your picture does not have to be perfect.
STEP FOUR
• Color in the FOREGROUND of your picture with the chalk you are given. It does not have to be realistic colors.
• Remember, FOREGROUND means the objects that are in the front of the picture.
STEP FIVE
• Using the oil pastels you are given, color in the BACKGROUND of your picture with patterns and designs.
• Remember, the BACKGROUND is all of the objects in the back of the picture.
STEP SIX
• Outline your FACE, NECK, and SHOULDERS with the black paint provided.
You can choose to use black paint on your eyes, nose, and lips if you like.
