Problem A:

The Question:

A basket ball is dropped from a height of 200cm. It bounces on a solid surface to a height that can be expressed as the dropped height divided by 2. What is the final bounce height?

Formula: Final Bounce Height = Drop Height divided by 2

Drop Height = 200cm

200cm divided by 2 = 100cm

Answer = 100cm

Problem B:

The Question:

Calculate what the bounce height will be if the ball is dropped from half of the original height in the previous question. (Show all working).

Formula: Final bounce height = Half of drop height from previous question divided by 2

Drop height = 100cm

100cm divided by 2 = 50cm

Answer: 50cm

Problem C:

A super bouncy ball was recently advertised as being able to bounce very high. After dropping it from a height of 25m, the ball lost only 25% of its starting height. To what height did the ball bounce?

Formula: Final Bounce Height = Drop Height – 25%

25% of 25m = 6.25

6.25 – 25m = 18.75m or 1875cm

Answer = 18.75m

Extension Task

If a super bouncy ball loses 50% of its start height on every bounce, how many bounces will it take before it bounces less than a centimetre if it is dropped from 100cm?

Keep on dividing it by 2

Working out: 100cm, 50cm, 25cm, 12.5cm, 6.25cm, 3.125, 1.5625, 0.78125

Answer: 7
