Hi everyone. Old Man in the Kitchen here. I need your help on this Old Wives Tale, I can’t remember the ending. If you know, let us know at The Villager. “Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day….”
Really good pancakes for breakfast or a light brunch:
2 cups of buttermilk pancake mix.
1 cup of mashed bananas.
Prepare batter as directed on package, adding mashed bananas. Cook as directed.
Serve warm with brown sugar topping: Cream ½ cup butter until fluffy, gradually add ½ cup brown sugar and beat until blended. Stir in 1 teaspoon grated orange rind, if you enjoy oranges.
Take care friends.
After years of listening to a friend talk about her medical humanitarian trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Westlake City School District school nurse Dorothy Beyer is giving up two weeks of her time to join the aid effort.
Beyer will join a team of Lorain County Community College (LCCC) nursing students, Vermilion dentist Dr. Ihor N. Suszko of the Cap Haitien Den- tal Institute (learn more at http:// chdentalinstitute.org/) and other health professionals from across the country in providing dental care to residents in the city of Cap Haitien. The team will work in a local hospital, Hospital Universitae Justinien, and two nursing schools, as well as poor communities in the Haitian countryside, during their stay to treat patients and discuss community health and nursing.
In Haiti, where poverty and hunger are rampant, parents quell their children’s hunger by giving them sugar cane because it’s readily available and satisfies. But it also leads to severe den- tal problems.
Beyer is taking a sabbatical from her Westlake nursing duties to help her

friend, Pat Sedlak, RN, an associate pro- fessor and director of Surgical Technol- ogy at LCCC, set up a study abroad pro- gram for the college. Sedlak has been making the trip to the area for about 12 years.
“I always wanted to go, but the times never lined up in the past,” Beyer said. “My husband (Dan, director of Human Subjects Research at the Cleveland Clinic) really wanted to be involved, so we made it happen.”
The team will leave on March 13 and return March 27. Beyer’s son, Joe, 24, accompanied Sedlak on a similar trip seven years ago as part of a high school project.
Each team member will bring a large suitcase filled with supplies – including cloth diapers, diaper pins, folders, pen- cils, markers, calculators, surgical drapes and surgical scissors – to help the local residents.
Along with attempting to pen a blog and potentially Skype with Westlake High School classes from Haiti, Beyer said she hopes to put together a program to present to Westlake High School stu- dents during a diversity week.
Benjamin Sposet, a Parkside Intermedi- ate School sixth grader, has qualified to rep- resent Westlake at the state-level National Geographic Bee on April 1 at the Ohio State University Mansfield campus.
Benjamin qualified as a state finalist by taking a 70-question test and earning one of the top scores in the state. Benjamin will com- pete against about 100 intermediate and middle school geography students for the chance to go to Washington, D.C., to repre- sent Ohio in the National Bee.
The National Geographic Society de- veloped the National Geographic Bee in 1989 in response to concerns about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people. Benjamin is the sixth state finalist from Parkside Intermediate School. He is preceded by Ingold Huang (2002), Ben Aghajanian (2003), Jason Linger (2004), Ryan Milowicki (2006) and Vinay Manayathara (2007).
