In the last lesson you learned about the pattern of tens in the base ten number system. In this lesson we will answer the questions:

What is an exponent?

How can you write large and small numbers?

Vocabulary

exponent - the exponent of a number shows you how many times the number is to be used in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.example: 102 = 10 × 10 = 100

Review: The base ten number system consists of patterns of ten.

How can we use this knowledge and exponents to help us write large numbers?

First, let’s start small.

Page 8: Math 5 Exponents Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner. In this lesson we will learn about exponents and powers of ten.

An exponent is written to the left of a number and looks like it is sitting on the shoulder of the number.

The base is the number that you use as a factor in the multiplication of an exponential equation

The exponent tells you how many times you multiply the base times itself.

10 base: 10 exponent: 2

10 x 10 (the base times itself 2 times)

What is the solution to this problem?

10 base: 10 exponent: 3

10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000

Does that match one of the places on our place value chart?

Page 14: Math 5 Exponents Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner. In this lesson we will learn about exponents and powers of ten.

What do you notice about this equation and its relationship to the place value chart? What about the relationship of the exponent to the number of zeros in the solution?

10 = 1,000

Write your answer in your Math Notebook.

Scientists use exponents to represent very large and very

small numbers. They call it scientific notation. Let’s see what these numbers mean in a

real world situation.
