In the last lesson you learned about the pattern of tens in the base ten number system. In this lesson we will answer the questions:
What is an exponent?
How can you write large and small numbers?
Vocabulary
exponent - the exponent of a number shows you how many times the number is to be used in a multiplication.It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.example: 102 = 10 × 10 = 100
Review: The base ten number system consists of patterns of ten.
How can we use this knowledge and exponents to help us write large numbers?
First, let’s start small.
An exponent is written to the left of a number and looks like it is sitting on the shoulder of the number.

The base is the number that you use as a factor in the multiplication of an exponential equation

The exponent tells you how many times you multiply the base times itself.
