Net Landed Cost of Goods, the total cost associated with getting goods into customers’ hands, consists of Cost of Distribution (CoD) and Cost of Manufacturing (CoM). For years, manufacturers and brands have worked to reduce CoM as the means to reducing their net landed cost of goods to compete and succeed in increasingly competitive market- places; as this strategy reaches its limits, companies increasingly turn to the often more rewarding yet complex opportunity to reduce CoD.
Some of the world’s top brands are putting Eyefreight’s Saas TMS in place to boost shipping efficiencies. Utilizing Eyefreight’s patent-pending algorithms for optimizing inventory allocation and distribution planning, these companies are rapidly achieving as much as 30% reductions in net landed cost of goods without renegotiating carrier rates.
• Reduce costs associated with unforeseen deviations to transport plans up to 15%
• Reduce delayed and/or failed shipments up to 10%
• Increase carrier negotiation power by up to 15%

“Train the trainer...” certification or confusionForklift Safety Training Services, Inc.
Don't be fooled by the incorrect term CERTIFICATION when the correct or proper term is CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION. Many training companies boldly advertise and offer a "train the train-er" certification class that hands you a certificate of completion at the end of their course. There are no accreditation or mandated certifica-tion qualifications in order to be a trainer or instructor. There are no government or private agencies that have been approved, endorsed or empowered with certain standardized credentials or qualifications to train instructors and then issue trainer certifications.
The OSHA regulation 1910.178, Powered Industrial Trucks, revised 6/2/2003, paragraph (L)(2)(iii), "Operator Training", clearly states: (l)(2)(iii) All operator training and evaluation shall be conduct-ed by persons who have the knowledge, TRAINING, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their compe-tence. The above excerpt does not reference or imply the term CER-TIFICATION. The word "TRAINING" can imply many meanings since the word is not defined. We can assume "on the job training" would qualify a person doing the training if they are experienced, capable, competent and knowledgeable of the specific equipment and application. With our easy to use safety training kits you can meet OSHA's compliance requirements.
As an employer, if you choose to ignore the new training rules adopted by OSHA, a minimum fine or penalty of $7,000 for EACH untrained operator can be assessed for non-compliance.

Creamer’s Corner
American Lincoln Model 7765 – The Right MachineMike Creamer
From time to time I receive a request of advice. Th is certain request was for a scrubber capable of maintaining on a regular basis some 500,000 square feet of surface space. As with anything, I had ques-tions that needed answers.
#1. Whether it is being used indoor or outdoor.#2. Width of aisles if any or open area.#3. Maintaining schedule, ie: daily, weekly, etc.
He stated that it would be weekly and it would indoors. Th e aisle width is going to be approximately 72" (6 feet).
Th ere are many good machines on the market. Th e Tennant M20 is a good example. Or the PowerBoss TSS90. But for me and with my experience I would recommend the American Lincoln 7765. Scrub-ber. It has a proven track record that always accompanies my decision.
• First. Th e availability of repair parts is always an important deal.
• Second. Machine overall design and quality.• And lastly, compatibility or fi tness of the machine with the
cleaning environment.Th e American Lincoln has many features I like in a machine. First
of all, the overall quality is very good. Th ese scrubbers are built like a tank being made mostly of steel instead of plastic. With proper care, I have seen these types last upwards of 15-20 years.
Th e ESP operating system is going to be a must and I would recommend this option. ESP stands for Extended Scrubbing Process.
During the scrubbing process, fi ltered water from the solution tank is fed to the solution line, where it mixes with detergent from a pump that meters this mix. Th is mixture is then fed to the fl oor where the three rotary brushes scrub the surface of the fl oor.
Another feature this machine off ers and is equipped with is a sweeping and dust control system. Th e debris from sweeping is thrown into the hopper. Th e vacuum fan then sucks the lighter dust up through a fi lter where it is then captured. When this hopper be-comes full it is easily emptied into a dumpster.
So, the cleaning process happens in this manner. Th e machine mov-ing forward #1. Th e side brush sweeps debris in front of the machine where the main brush “being the width of the machine” sweeps all debris into the debris hopper. Th en behind the main broom, deter-gent and water mixes with the rotary brushes to scrub the surface, whereas it loosens the harden dirt/soil and vaccums this from the rear squeegee.
Th e American Lincoln 7765 can do all this, especially equipped with GM 3.0 power plant. Being indoors, obviously you will want this machine LP fueled.
If you ever have questions or comments about sweeper/scrubbers, email me at [email protected]
Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber.

Donating blood is good for your healthMary Strickler
According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and roughly 41,000 blood donations are needed daily. These statistics are staggering and help explain why roll-ing up your sleeve to save a life is so vital to the community. While the benefits are clear for those that receive the blood donation, we now know that blood donors can reap health benefits as well.
When an individual donates blood on a regular basis, they reduce the amount of iron found in their blood. Studies have shown that this reduction of iron in the body can reduce the risk of cancers and aging in the liver, lung, colon, and throat. The Journal of American Medical Association found that donors who donated blood at least every six months, reduced their chance of heart attacks and strokes during the ages of 43 – 61.
Blood donation also helps burn more calories. Did you know that a donor will burn roughly 650 calories per one unit of blood? While this should never be used as a weight loss plan, it is obvious that this activity has some added benefits to get the blood pumping and cal-ories burning. Not to mention that having a blood analysis will also provide free testing for early prevention. The health benefits are clear, and yet the number one reason most choose to donate on a regular basis is to save a life and help those in need.
TVH holds regular blood drives each year with the American Red Cross at several facilities across the Americas. Our last drive in Octo-ber at our headquarters in Olathe, Kansas achieved record breaking donations. Over 50 employees participated and donated a total of 56 pints, meaning that TVH employees have the potential to save over 170 lives. “Our blood drive has been a huge success and we are thrilled to have several first time donors join to support this cause,” said Lucy DelSarto Health and Wellness Coach for TVH. “It’s evi-dent that our employees feel good about helping out our community and realize the importance of saving lives through blood donation.” Additional blood drives are being held at TVH locations throughout the country including Grayslake, IL where they had an amazing 96% donation rate.
With the overwhelming success of our recent blood drives and a need for donation within the community, TVH has agreed to host three blood drives in 2016 at our headquarters in Kansas. This not only solidifies our commitment to health and wellness, but also gives TVH employees an outlet to reach out and help those within our community.

What about me?Mike Marchev
Th is cartoon appeared in last week’s TRO Ezine and I thought of you. It reminded me of the “SBC.” Th is stands for the "Social Bafoon Curse.”
Today's message has little to do with travel, and a lot to do with your social status.
In not so many words, the SBC sounds like this: “You think that is cool, wait until you hear what I have to say.” It shows its ugly face when one person in a group shares some good news only to be trumped by the next person's "exciting information." Th e other peo-ple in the group immediately interpret this as a sign that it is time to play “one-upmanship.”
It may unfold something like this: “My daughter just graduated from Th e University of Miami.” “Oh! My son just graduated and we had a big party and he came with his fi ancé and we bought him a car and 300 people came and he looks like Brad Pitt and I wore my red dress and...and...and.”
I am certain that you are guilty of exhibiting the SBC now and then, and I suggest that you cease this borish behavior at once. It is the fastest way to reach a dead end street when it comes to establish-ing a meaningful relationship.
BETTER: Remember that “nobody cares about your stories.” Too harsh? I’ll say it again.“NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR STORIES.” Th ey care about “their” stories. You are well advised to probe deeper into their stories by asking questions. To the fi rst person announcing her daughter’s graduation, you might say, “Th at is terrifi c. What did she major in? What is she planning to do next? Did she ever skip class and hang out on South Beach? Did she ever spot Don Johnson? (Th at last one was for you old folks lie me.) You get the picture.
Now that I have brought it to your attention, you will notice the SB Curse happening everywhere. Just don’t become a practitioner yourself. Get into other people’s stories. You will be glad you did. You already know your stories and other people only care about theirs. Become Th e Exception. Get into them.

How to quote a pallet rack systemSelective/Structural Pallet Rack Systems are fabricated using hot-
rolled structural steel channels for both the cross beams and upright frames. They are strong and rigid and designed to be used in the drive in / drive thru pallet storage applications, offering immediate access to every pallet load.
hese pallet rack systems come in a variety of sizes and capacities with the option of bolted or slotted beam connections. They are covered with a durable powder coating and baked enamel finishes, providing lasting protection that will stand up to the harshest condi-tions.
Following is the standard information we ask our customers when quoting a selective/structural pallet rack system:
• What material is being stored? What size is the material? Is it individual boxes or on pallets? What are the overall dimensions, WxDxH?
• What is the weight of each box or pallet?• How many boxes or pallets are required per level and how
many levels?• How much space is available for the pallet rack system?• Is it against a wall or are there other obstructions such as
sprinkler systems?• Is the material located outside, in a cooler or a corrosive
environment?• Are any accessories required? Wire decks, column guards,
safety bars, shims, anchors, etc.
The frame depth is typically 6" less than the depth of the pallet. This allows a 3" overhang on the front and rear of the system to help ensure the forklift driver sets the pallet on both beams.
The frame height is determined by the number of levels, 4" lift off per level, the beam height per level, and the pallet height. Example:
3 levelsPallets 40" highBeam profile 4" high 40" + 4" + 4" = 48" first level + 48" second level + 48" third level = minimum 144” tall frame
The beam width is determined by the number of pallets per level, the width of the pallet, 5" space between the pallet and the frame on both ends and 6” space between pallets. Example:
Frame profile is determined by required capacity based on number of pallets per level, weight per pallet and maximum vertical beam spacing. Example:
3 levels2 pallets per level with 2500# per pallet48" maximum vertical beam spacing 2500# x 2 = 5000# per level x 3 levels = 15000# requirement per bay
RUR 31I frame can be used which provides 16,700# capacityBeam profile is determined by required capacity based number of
pallets per level, weight per pallet and beam width. Example:
2 pallets per level with 2500# per pallet96" wide beam 2500# x 2 = 5000# beam, we require a 410 S profile

Tech TalkExtending the life of a reman engineJohn Gelsimino Jr.
Upon purchasing a reman engine your dealership is forming a partnership with the engine supplier. Each party must perform their part to ensure that the engine provides thousands of hours of service. Proper installation, break-in and preventative maintenance is critical to an engine’s long term performance. The following will cover prop-er engine installation and engine maintenance.
Proper Engine Installation
The first step of engine installation is the inspection prior to installation. The technician should check for freight damage or dirt contamination.
The following is a list of accessories/procedures that should accom-pany the reman engine:
• Clean, flush, pressure check radiator.• New water pump, radiator hoses and new radiator cap.• New thermostat.• Clean out the intake manifold and check muffler for
residual oil.• New motor mounts• New or rebuilt starter/inspect flywheel ring gear for wear• New air and oil filters• New spark plugs, wires & distributor cap
Break-in period is the next critical area. Be sure the engine is properly lubricated before startup. Upon starting check oil pressure and running temperature which are essentially the vital signs of an engine.
CAUTION: Never add cold water to the cooling system while the engine is hot. The first five minutes of engine operation determines the longevity of the reman.
First adjust the distributor timing and then adjust the fuel system. Always check for oil leaks first. Adjust the governor to the proper RPM. Consult factory specifications for engine specific governor RPM settings. Make sure the fan blade is on facing the correct di-rection. Some blades can bolt up in either direction. Run at fast idle, approximately 1500 RPM, for 30-60 minutes.
NOTE: Applying a load to the engine for short periods of time increases piston ring pressure against the cylinder walls and helps the piston rings seat. This is important because you are “breaking-in” the engine with heavy duty oil left-over from assembly. Upon rapid deceleration, vacuum increases and provides extra lubrication to the piston and ring assemblies.
After sufficient time at operating temperature valve lash must be adjusted and the cylinder head re-torqued. Times vary for each en-gine, consult your service manual for engine specific times for valve lash and head bolt re-adjustment.
WARNING: Failure to re-torque the cylinder head may result in a blown head gasket.
For any questions pertaining to valve lash settings, cylinder head bolt torque or any other specifications, please feel free to contact us at 877-303-LIFT or visit our online specs at www.all-industrial.com.
Proper Engine Maintenance
In normal operations, periodic engine maintenance should be performed every 250/300 running hours. This maintenance should include but is not limited to:
• Changing engine oil and topping-off all fluids• Changing air and oil filters• Blowing-out the radiator to pre-vent overheating.• If applicable, inspect and/or replace timing belt. Timing
belt failure can result in major engine damage. This is a high maintenance item and should be watched closely upon each PM service.
• Tune-up engine• Check valve lash to prevent excessive valve train wear• Check governor setting and adjust fuel system.• Check and record hour meter reading
Following this general list of guidelines when installing a reman-ufactured engine will help to provide thousands of hours of quality service. Remember that each time you purchase a reman engine you are forming a partnership with your engine supplier.
If you are interested in this topic. Feel free to call John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service at 877/303-LIFT or [email protected]. As always, TechTalk and All Industrial Engine Service bring you current issues that are relevant to today’s material handling industry.

findadistributor.com puts material handling equipment distributors, dealers and OEMs a click away from the buying decision makers re-sponsible for U.S. consumption of material handling equipment worth $165 billion, including conveyors and conveying equipment; overhead traveling cranes, hoists, and monorail systems; industrial lift trucks and stackers; mezzanines, racking and storage products, and more.
findadistributor.com was founded by the CEO Mark Bridger on 1st October 2014. “It was a concept I had been working through in my head for some time. My background is b2b trade media and I had been involved with crane and lifting publications since 2004; originally in London, England before relocating to Phoenix, Arizona in 2009”, stated Mark Bridger. “I was constantly researching for new business and a high percentage of doors I knocked on turned out to be distributors and dealers. I enquired where and how they promoted their businesses. Some relied on word of mouth, others only used local newspapers. When discussed further, the concept of findadistributor.com was embraced by many. There seemed to be a gap in the market and the best way to undergo my final research was to launch the site.”
Mark and his business partner Richard Howes, well-known in the publishing ranks with a special talent when it comes to Twitter, have spent the first year promoting their website through social media. “In our first year we have almost 1,800 followers and activity is so high that we are welcoming about 10 new companies or individuals each day, says Bridger. Bridger enjoys watching the shelves of the Newsstand
on the website fill up with trade magazines and literature. This ads a unique element to the website and our users can keep up to date with industry news and trends by selecting a publication to read with their morning coffee.
“I’d like to think we are well-known for building a reputation for our friendly and efficient customer service and more importantly for providing this niche community with a cost-effective means to market businesses. The internet is still a scary place for many people and can be a minefield when deciding where best to invest your buck. Our low yearly subscription rate allows the ‘little guy’ to compete on a level playing field with the larger corporate enterprises”, explains Bridger.
What will the future hold for findadistributor.com? Bridger hopes findadistributor.com will be on the tip of everyone’s tongues and fingertips when searching for material handling products and services. For now we try to keep our feet on the ground and continue to invest in the concept. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but with a strong founda-tion findadistributor.com will become the forum where buyers need to come to do their business.
We would like to extend a special offer to Material Handling Network customers. Any new business registering on the site before December 31, 2015 can benefit from a complimentary banner with a shelf life of three months simply by emailing [email protected] with the promo code ‘MHN’.
