StackAn elegant meeting or all-round chair, it is up to the user. The chair is designed by Fredrik Mattson who is a trained furniture designer and interior designer. He endeavours to identify a straight-forward design without deviations or shortcuts. One distinguishing detail, in addition to the shape of the chair, is the linking and stacking feature as it stacks very tightly. There is also a number of versions and different options available, for instance, with or without armrests, with wire sled base frame or 4-legged tube frame. Stack is also available as a bar stool made of polypropylene or FSC® certified wood.

Meetings between people drive our innovative design. We are highlighting this through our communication concept “Design meets…”. This is one of the images we are using in 2014. Another one can be found on the front of this newsletter.

We take responsibility for our actions.

Everything can be customised, if you wish.

The design group Front is made up of Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Anna Lindgren. They currently work as external design partners with galleries, museums and companies. But we at Materia have known them for some time. Ten years ago we worked together in designing the waste basket “Bin” which also received the Guldstolen [The Golden Chair] award.

Close collaboration from the outset Materia was the first company Front decided to work with. Now, ten years on, the collaboration is renewed for a new product.

“Materia has been with us from the start. Today we look back and smile at the requirements we had, requirements that could not be met in pure pro duc tion terms. But since the results were a success, we are confident that Materia can come up with a solution to any demanding task,” says Front.

New product for Stockholm Furniture Fair Front and Materia have worked together for a few months designing a new piece of furniture. The first prototype is ready and the launch will take place at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2015. Visitors will get to see a new, comfortable sofa where comfort is defined by textile qualities.

Closer collaboration in the future Ten years have passed between both collaboration projects, but hopefully it won’t take as long for Front and Materia to team up again.

“We know each other well and have gained extensive experience of the production process. There is no doubt we will work together in the future, and more often than previously,” says Front.

We are extremely committed to the environment and social responsibility. From major to minor issues. One simple yet smart way for instance is to use local suppliers as this reduces haulage distances. And there are many of these nearby our factory in Tranås.

Regular inspectionsMore complicated work is carried out using the Möbelfakta product labelling system. To comply with their stringent demands, our manufacturing processes and our suppliers and sub-suppliers must be in compliance with technological, environ mental and ethical production demands. We therefore regularly inspect these aspects, both in Sweden and abroad.

FSC® certificationIn contrast to many other furniture manufacturers, Materia is certified in accordance with FSC®. This means that the wood used in our furniture comes from responsibly managed forests. The certification regulates the entire chain, from protecting flora and fauna to the working conditions for those working with felling, sawing and transporting of wood.

Defined sustainability policyWe are also certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and have a defined sustainability policy. All a matter of course it may seem but not for everyone.

Down through the years, Materia has become known for its flexibility and its ability to customise almost anything. But are there any limitations to how far anything can be customised? We asked Mikael Johansson, product manager at Materia.

How much can products be customised? “There are really no limits, it can range from every thing from a customised table top stain toliterally an entirely new product. We usually describe it as unlimited possibilities within reason.”

What is it about Materia that allows you to offer customised products? “We focus strongly on our clients and we have a department that works entirely with customised pro ducts. This is why we can offer a fast solution even when it comes to the most complex of requests.”

How would you describe the work process? “We collaborate with both Swedish and foreign designers, and we will gladly get involved at an early stage in processes and work with our clients to come up with unique solutions, customised to meet any specific requirements.”

Does this increase the cost? “The cost of customisation is entirely dependent on what a client wants.”

What are the delivery times? “Everything from four to eight weeks depending on how extensive the customisation work is.”

Who are your target groups? “Our target groups are specifying architects, retailers and buyers in design conscious and culturally aware companies.”

Tell us about an out-of-the-box assignment. “Huddinge Hospital is a good example. Here we came up with customised existing products (Element easy chair and Plint stool) to meet client requirements. It is about taking practical reality into consideration with for instance the use of contrasting colours to make life easier for the visually impaired, different seat heights, exchangeable covers and cleanability.”

Give advice to anyone thinking about investing in customised products. “Give some serious thought to what you want and why. We can also act as a sounding board and will gladly discuss different options and solutions with you.”

Design meets a perfectionist.

Experimental project with Front.

FSC® is short for Forest Stewardship Council. An independent, global, members organi sation dedicated to the promotion of environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable use of the world’s forests through its FSC® certification system. Materia’s certificate code: BV-COC-119122.

Huddinge Hospital is an example where the environment places demands on flexibility. Here the existing Element easy chairs and Plint stools are customised to suit client needs. Good clean ability, durable covers that are easy to replace and different seat heights in the furniture are a number of the demands that are met.

Everything you need to know about the products is compiled here such as images, content, drawings, 2D and 3D files, etc.

The website works just as well on computers as it does on tablets and smartphones.

Are you looking for ideas for a new project? All our image references have been compiled under the heading “Inspiration”. Here you sort through the images based on environments such as office or conference room. Or select a certain product and see how it has been used. Under “Case”, you can be inspired as to how others have used our products.

Eco-friendly product sheets for print on demand.

Premiere in a computer, tablet or smartphone near you.Our website has been rebuilt from scratch. For you, this means that it is now easier than ever to find the information and inspiration you are looking for. We are also introducing a number of new and improved features.

The fact is if you know our product range you will probably recognise both of these products. They are our bar stool Elephant, which is now being launched as a bench and the Stack bar stool which we are launching with armrests.

Elephant bench Elephant has a design that reminds us of the stools used in circuses. It has a very robust design and as it looks the same from all directions, it always looks good. It is 1,220 mm in diameter and 430 mm in height. The seat can be covered with fabric or leather. The steel wire frame is available in chrome or silver grey powder coating. The Elephant range also includes bar stools of varying heights.

Stack bar stool with armrests Our popular bar stool Stack is now being launched as an armrest version. The armrests can be used to hang the stools on tables which makes cleaning easier. The seat shell is made of polypropylene; white, black, red or dim turquoise with frame edge in a matching colour or seat shell made of oak veneer, birch veneer or white-pigmented ash veneer with black polypropylene frame edge. Upholstered seat in fabric or leather available as optional. Frame in two heights: 630 mm or 780 mm in chrome or white, black or silver grey powder coating.

Welcome to a fresh-off-the press newsletter where you can read about everything that is related to furniture, design and meetings.

Our own language. A number of months have passed since we launched the new communications concept “Design meets...”. A concept that deals with design but just as much with functionality. There has been much positive feedback. Most people say that we have reinforced the image of us as an innovative, design-oriented and contemporary company. We simply have our own language that distinguishes us from others on the market.

New inspirational website. Another important aspect of our communication is our website. When you read this, you have surely been to our new and inspirational website. The website has been rebuilt from scratch to make it easier than ever before to find information and offer you the inspiration you are looking for. Read more about the website elsewhere in this newsletter or test it now by browsing to www.materia.se.

Collaboration on a wide Front. One exciting project that has recently intensified is the collaboration with the design group Front, which is the brainchild of Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Anna Lindgren. The hallmark of their products is that beholders are often provided with a story about the design process and the materials used in their making. The group has previously designed Bin, Hanger, Peg and Screen for Materia, and there is a new exciting product in the pipeline. Read more about this and much more in the newsletter.

Enjoy the read!
