Tacoma Defiance (2-6-0, 6 points) and San Anto-nio FC (2-4-1, 7 points) on Friday will play the first of two contests in 2019. The clubs will square off again in Tacoma on Friday, August 30 (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+).

Tacoma continues its stretch of five consecutive road games that ends on May 4. Defiance is looking for its first victory away from Cheney Stadium in 2019. San Antonio has won its last two home matches and is 2-1-1 at Toyota Field this season.

Following Friday’s match, Tacoma wraps up its five-game road stretch with a matchup at OKC Energy FC on Saturday, May 4 (5:30 p.m. PT / ESPN+).

Forward Austin Brummett on Saturday at Phoenix Rising FC became the youngest player in USL Championship history to make his debut at 15 years and two months old. He surpassed Efrain Alvarez of LA Galaxy II, who made his debut at 15 years and three months of age.

Brummett played 35 minutes after coming on as a sub for Shandon Hopeau in the 55th minute. The Sounders FC Academy player recorded one shot on goal and won one foul for Tacoma.

Last season, Danny Leyva became the youngest player in club history to make his professional debut before being surpassed by Brummett on Saturday.

TACOMA REBRANDIn a series of key announcements on January 30 at a press conference inside Cheney Stadium, the Tacoma Rainiers and Seattle Sounders FC unveiled the long-awaited new brand for the organizations’ United Soccer League club: Tacoma Defiance. Set to begin play under this new identity immediately, Tacoma’s professional soccer side now officially bears the name of its hometown, while proudly pay-ing homage to the city’s maritime roots and deep sense of civic identity. LAST MATCH RECAPTacoma Defiance (2-6-0, 6 points) on Saturday eve-ning dropped a 4-0 decision at Phoenix Rising FC (2-1-4, 10 points). The match was the third in a stretch of five consecutive away contests for Tacoma. Junior Flemmings scored two goals and added one assist to lead Phoenix, while Jason Johnson and Solomon Asante each recorded one goal and one assist.

Flemmings tallied his first of the night in the 33rd minute on a blast from outside the box. He dribbled to his right before firing a shot with his right foot to the right corner of the goal past Tacoma goalkeeper Trey Muse to give Phoenix a 1-0 lead. Johnson made it 2-0 when he finished a cross from Solomon Asante inside the six-yard box just three minutes later. Flemmings completed his brace just before halftime on a header off a cross from Johnson to make it 3-0. Flemmings collected a loose ball right outside the box in the 53rd minute and found Asante who calmly finished past Muse to give Phoenix a 4-0 advantage. Six players under the age of 20 saw action for Taco-ma tonight, including one First Team player in Muse. Austin Brummett made his USL debut at the age of 15.

2019 TACOMA DEFIANCE STARTING XI BY THE NUMBERS


Chris Little is in his first season as Head Coach of Tacoma Defiance. He is also the Sounders FC Academy Director of Coaching, where he oversees the development of Sounders FC’s youth system.

Little joined Sounders FC in 2017 from Elon University, where he was the Associate Head Coach from 2010 until 2013 before being promoted to Head Coach in 2014. He guided the Sounders FC Academy U-17 squad to the 2017-18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Na-tional Championship, and also captured the 2018 U-17 Generation Adidas Cup championship. He has coached 20 Academy players that have been involved with U.S. Youth National Teams,

and eight players from his U-17 squads have signed professional contracts with S2. Little was named the 2018 U-16/17 U.S. Development Academy West Division Coach of the Year, and his club won the conference’s Com-munity Award for the second consecutive season.

During his time at Elon, he won four conference championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearanc-es. Little was named the 2015 Coach of the Year in the Midwest Region, and has had six former players from Elon sign professional contracts. In 2012, he was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the South Region.

Wade Webber is in his second season as Assistant Coach. He joined the staff prior to the 2018 season. The former Sounder brings a decade of professional playing experience, including 53 MLS appearances for Dallas and Miami from 1997-1999. Since retiring from playing in 1999, Webber has coached youth soccer extensively throughout Western Washington, including the last two seasons with the Sounders FC Academy and the previous seven as Director of Coaching for Washington Premier FC. Webber has a USSF A License and a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Seattle University. He has also served as a radio analyst for Sounders FC broadcasts since 2012.

Marc Nicholls was named Academy Technical Director in July 2014 before being promoted to Director of Player Development prior to the 2018 season. The two-time U.S. Academy coach of the year (2010 and 2012) joined the Sounders FC staff after three years (2011-13) as the Head Coach of the Carolina Dynamo of the USL PDL, where he led the team to the division title in all three seasons, including a PDL National Final appearance in 2012 and U.S. Soccer National Championship in 2013. He also served as Technical Director for NC Fusion, leading the club to three appearances in U.S. Academy Nationals, including a third-place finish for the U-18 squad in 2012. Before arriving in Seattle, he also combined his PDL coaching posi-

tion with a scouting role for Montreal Impact. Nicholls holds his USSF National “A” License, the FIFA Futuro III program, as well as the prestigious French Formation License. He is currently a national staff member for U.S. Soccer. He is married to his wife, Claire, and has two daughters, Cally and Leah.

SOUNDERS FC DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT MARC NICHOLLS

Josh Ford is in his first season as Assistant Coach of Tacoma Defiance. Prior to joining the staff ahead of the 2019 campaign, Ford served as the Goalkeeper Coach for Sounders FC Academy. He began his career playing for the Rhode Island Stingrays after spending four years at the University of Connecticut where he was named the 2010 Big East Goalkeeper of the Year. He set career records at UConn in shutouts (50), consecutive starts (85) and wins (54). Ford spent four seasons with Seattle Sounders FC, 2011-2014, before being selected by Orlando City SC in the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Draft. In 2015, he spent time on loan to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers where he made 16 starts. At the start of 2016, Josh signed with San Anto-nio FC for their 2016 debut USL season, before joining Sounders FC Academy staff.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE2018 (S2): After a breakout season in 2017, Rogers was named Vice Captain of the squad ahead of his second professional campaign. Though his number of USL appearances decreased from 25 to 11, primarily through frequent U.S. Youth National Team call ups, he managed to demonstrate significant progress on the pitch, with the defender recording 22 interceptions, 22 aerial duels won, and 45 clearances in just 813 minutes.

2017 (S2): Rogers made his professional debut in the sea-son-opening loss to Sacramento Republic FC on March 26. He scored his first professional goal against San Anto-nio FC on April 25.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCERogers was called into the U.S. U-18 camp in March of 2017. He has since become a mainstay with the U.S. U-20 national team, receiving call ups to several domestic and international camps.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE2018 (S2): Scored his first professional goal, the game-winner, against Portland Timbers 2 (March 16) in the opening match of the season. Was selected to the USL Team of the Week after scoring the winning goal against Portland (March 16). He also pitched in with two assists on the season. While the majority of his starts came in a wide midfield role, Hinds managed over 10 starts at left back, a role he played while in the Academy and with U.S. Youth National Teams.

2016 (S2): Played in seven games for S2, making three starts.

2015 (S2): Appeared in one game for S2.

COLLEGE EXPERIENCEHinds spent two seasons at one of college soccer’s most storied programs, the University of Akron. After locking down the starting left back spot as a freshman, he was moved into an attacking midfield role later in the season. Hinds started 30 matches across two seasons with the Zips and made a further 14 appearances a substitute, recording 11 goals and eight assists.

He scored his first professional goal on October 10, tallying a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. In his next match, a 4-1 road win over Tulsa Rough-necks FC on October 13, Diaz posted a goal and two assists.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE2018 (S2): Hopeau took another step forward in 2018, staring 24 matches as he recorded two goals and 27 chances created. He opened his account on August 12th, scoring a long-range goal in a 3-2 home win over San Antonio FC. He found the back of the net once again on September 6th, tallying a dramatic late equalizer in S2’s 4-4 draw with Tulsa Roughnecks. In recognition of his growing leadership within the group, Hopeau captained the team on several occasions throughout the season.

2017 (S2): Hopeau made his season debut in a 2-1 sea-son-opening loss to Sacramento Republic FC (March 26) and recorded his first assist in a 3-2 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (April 29). He also appeared in two matches for S2 as a member of Sounders FC Acade-my in 2016.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE2018 (S2): Scored his first professional goal against Rio Grande Valley FC, which was the match-winner (April 14). Gonzalez enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2018, leading the team with three assists and finishing fourth with three goals. He bagged his second goal of the campaign in a 3-1 road loss to San Antonio FC. The Academy alum then bagged a goal in the very next match, a 2-1 loss to Orange County SC (October 6).

2017 (S2): Gonzalez made his USL debut in a reserve role in a 3-2 home loss against San Antonio FC on April 25, 2017. He recorded his first professional assist in a 3-0 win over the LA Galaxy’s USL side on June 3 at Starfire Stadium. In January, Gonzalez joined the First Team during preseason.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCEIn October of 2016, Gonzalez played for the United States U-16 squad during a tournament in France. He also partic-ipated in the International Dream Cup in June 2017.

PERSONALVargas was a Sounders FC Academy product since 2016 and was initially signed from partner club Central Califor-nia Aztecs earlier that year. He became the fourth player born in 2001-02 to sign a professional contract with S2.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE2018 (S2): The Haitian built upon his impressive rookie season with a breakout campaign in 2018, leading the team with 2,466 minutes played. All 28 of his appearances on the year were starts. The defender also led the team in interceptions (78) and duels won (144). An attacking outside back, he finished the season with the third-most chances created (20). Ulysse was named as the third-best player in the 2018 USL 20-Under-20, an annual list rank-ing the top teenage prospects in the league.

2017 (S2): Made his USL debut in 30 minutes of action against San Antonio FC on April 25, 2017.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCEIn October 2016, Ulysse was named to the Caribbean U-20 Best XI following Haiti’s championship win in the qualifying tournament for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Prior to signing with S2, Ulysse played for Real Hope in his native country of Haiti.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCEOcampo-Chavez has been a mainstay on the U.S. Youth National Team circuit ever since he joined Sounders Acad-emy midway through 2016. Along with teammate Josh Atencio, he led the Stars and Stripes to the 2016 Torneo Delle Nazioni in Italy, defeating the likes of England and Portugal. Later that Summer, Ocampo-Chavez guided the United States to a second-place finish at the 2015 CON-CACAF Championships. The young forward has been a key component of the U-17 national team since the start of the new cycle.

YOUTH EXPERIENCEAtencio joined Sounders Academy in 2016 as one of the youngest members of the U-15 squad. The midfielder has racked up over 100 matches played for Seattle’s youth teams. Throughout his four years in the Academy, Atencio has been an important start on teams that won the Youdan Trophy in England, Generation adidas Cup, and the 2017-18 USSDA national championship. He was also the Player of the Tournament as the Sounders U-15s finished third at the Manchester City Cup, beating the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Daley recorded his first assist with the club at Reno 1868 FC in just his second appearance (May 19).

He signed with S2 after previously competing for Queensland Lions FC in his native country of Australia. Daley recorded four goals and one assist in five appear-ances for Lions FC in 2018. He is a former captain of his Brisbane Roar A-League Academy club.

The Australian scored his first goal for S2 in a 3-0 win over Las Vegas Lights FC on July 26. Operating in box-to-box and attack-ing midfield roles, Burke-Gilroy tallied 16 key passes and three goals.

Burke-Gilroy signed with S2 on May 1, 2018 after playing for the Newcastle Jets A-League club as a full-time schol-arship player. From January to June of 2017, he was on a six-month loan to club Academica Coimbra in Portugal.
