What: Within a Micro-unit, kinetic elements are necessary to fit all the functions of a typical apartment into the compacted footprint. This thesis explores how all of the functions of the unit can be compacted into a single wall, achieving spatial efficiency and a thickening and compacting of the kinetic elements. This is intended to enhance the seven senses of user experience through the tactile quality of materials.

Why: As city populations continue to grow and their boundaries remain the same, it has become a necessity to live efficiently, resulting in the condensing of our habitations. In the past few years, the urgency of efficient housing solu-tions has become most prominent; May-ors of cities such as Boston and New York City have challenged designers to begin implementing these smaller unit typologies within new developments de-spite their size, which do not meet the current code requirements.

For Whom: This unit type is intended for either one or two young profession-als within an urban environment that may be interested in living a Hi-Tech, efficient lifestyle without sacrificing the tangible connection with nature that is achieved through the use of Low-Tech materials. The siting of the project will best serve the intended demograph-ic, allowing for easy access to public amenities and entertainment facilities as well as a short commute to the work-place.
