INTRODUCTIONTheUCLAGraduateSchoolofEducation&InformationStudies(GSE&IS)andthe

UCLADivisionofStudentAffairscollaborativelyoffertheMastersofEducationin

StudentAffairs.HousedwithintheHigherEducationandOrganizationalChange

(HEOC)divisionofGSE&IS,theM.Ed.isanintensivefour-quarterprogramofstudy

thatconcentratesontheory,practice,andresearchinStudentAffairsin

postsecondaryeducation.Studentsattendclassesasacohortonafull-timebasis

withinasupportiveandrigorousenvironmentandparticipateinthreequartersof

directedinternship.ClassesaretaughtbyHEOCfacultyandStudentAffairs

professionals,manyofwhomarerenownedscholarsandnationalleadersinthe

field.Throughguestpresentationsandexperientialwork,studentsmeetwithand

learnfromoutstandingStudentAffairsprofessionalsfromUCLAandneighboring

institutions.Studentsgraduatefromthisscholar-practitionerprogramandentera

varietyoflevelsandsettingsinhighereducationasprepared,experienced

practitionersfamiliarwithresearch,ethics,andtrendsinthefield.

TheM.Ed.inStudentAffairsdegreeisaone-year,four-quarterprogramthatbegins

withfull-timeenrollment(6-10units)intheUCLAsummersession.Studentswill

receivespecificinformationabouttheprocessofenrollinginsummercoursesand

applyingforsummersessionfinancialaidonceadmittedtotheprogram.

Pleasenote:Ifyouwishtobeconsideredforstudentaidduringthesummersessionyou

M.ED.INSTUDENTAFFAIRSLEARNINGOUTCOMES

Upon completion of the M.Ed. in Student Affairs, students are expected to have

developedandbeabletodemonstratetheprofessionalknowledgeandcompetencies

describedbelow.Theselectionofthesespecificlearningoutcomeswasinformedby

areviewoftheCouncilfortheAdvancementofStandardsinHigherEducation’s(CAS)

(2003)“StandardsandGuidelinesforMasters-LevelGraduateProgramsforStudent

AffairsProfessionals.”Theseoutcomesinformthedevelopmentofrelevantcurricular

and internship learning opportunities as well as provide students, faculty, and

supervisorswithavaluableself-evaluation,feedback,andprofessionaldevelopment

tool.

1.SocialJusticeEducation&TransformativeStudentAffairsPracticeGraduateswillbeableto:

A. Advancethefullandequalparticipationofallgroupsintheuniversitycommunityandsociety,whereindividualsaresafe,self-determiningandinterdependent.

B. Designdemocraticandempoweringeducationalprogramsandlearningenvironmentsthatfosterunderstandingandrespectfordiversityandcultivatetheactiveengagementofothers(students,faculty,colleagues)insocialchange.

C. Design,conduct,and/orinterpretinstitutionalassessmentactivitiesthatexamineallformsofdiscriminationandusetheseresearchfindingstoinformprofessionalpractice.

D. Demonstrateacriticalunderstandingofhighereducationandthestudentaffairsprofessionandtheirroleinpromotingsocialjustice.

A. Demonstrateanunderstandingofandtheabilitytoapplytheoriesofintellectual,moral,identity,psychosocial,career,andspiritualdevelopmentwithinthecontextofamulticulturalcampusand/orsociety;theintersectionofmultipleidentities;andlearningstylesthroughoutthelateadolescentandadultlifespan.

B. Demonstratetheabilitytoassessthelearninganddevelopmentalneedsofstudentsacrossallcollege-goingagegroups.

C. Demonstratetheabilitytocreatelearninganddevelopmentalopportunitiesinformedbyrelevanttheories.

D. Demonstrateknowledgeofthedifferentialstrengthsandapplicationsofstudenttheoriesrelativetostudentage,gender,ethnicity,race,culture,sexualidentity,disability,spirituality,nationalorigin,socioeconomicstatus,andresident/commuterstatus.

4.StudentCharacteristics&EffectsofCollegeonStudentsGraduateswillbeableto:

A. Demonstrateknowledgeofhowstudentlearningandlearningopportunitiesareinfluencedbystudentcharacteristicsandbycollegiateenvironments.
