INTRODUCTIONTheUCLAGraduateSchoolofEducation&InformationStudies(GSE&IS)andthe

UCLADivisionofStudentAffairscollaborativelyoffertheMastersofEducationin

StudentAffairs.HousedwithintheHigherEducationandOrganizationalChange

(HEOC)divisionofGSE&IS,theM.Ed.isanintensivefour-quarterprogramofstudy

thatconcentratesontheory,practice,andresearchinStudentAffairsin

postsecondaryeducation.Studentsattendclassesasacohortonafull-timebasis

withinasupportiveandrigorousenvironmentandparticipateinthreequartersof

directedinternship.ClassesaretaughtbyHEOCfacultyandStudentAffairs

professionals,manyofwhomarerenownedscholarsandnationalleadersinthe

field.Throughguestpresentationsandexperientialwork,studentsmeetwithand

learnfromoutstandingStudentAffairsprofessionalsfromUCLAandneighboring

Upon completion of the M.Ed. in Student Affairs, students are expected to have

developedandbeabletodemonstratetheprofessionalknowledgeandcompetencies

describedbelow.Theselectionofthesespecificlearningoutcomeswasinformedby

areviewoftheCouncilfortheAdvancementofStandardsinHigherEducation’s(CAS)

(2003)“StandardsandGuidelinesforMasters-LevelGraduateProgramsforStudent

AffairsProfessionals.”Theseoutcomesinformthedevelopmentofrelevantcurricular

and internship learning opportunities as well as provide students, faculty, and

Practicalexperienceisamongthemostimportantaspectsofanypreparationprogramin

studentaffairs.Theopportunitytoworkwithpracticingprofessionalsandtoaccomplish

TheProgramDirectorprovidesstudentswithclosesupervisionandevaluationof

professionaldevelopmentopportunitiestositesupervisors.

SiteSupervisorRole

ThesitesupervisorswillpossessatleastaMaster’sdegreeinstudentaffairsorarelated

field,orpossessappropriateprofessionalexperience.Theywillhaveaminimumoftwo

yearsofpertinentprofessionalexperienceintheareainwhichthestudentiscompleting

theinternship.ThesitesupervisorisexpectedtobeknowledgeableoftheM.Ed.inStudent

Affairsprogramandthefaculty’sexpectations,requirements,andevaluationproceduresas

theypertaintotheintern.Sitesupervisorsaretohelpthestudentdevelopandarticulate

appropriatelearninggoalsfortheinternship,provideonehourperweekofdirect

Theselecteddepartmentalsiteshouldenrichaspecialtyinterestareaenablingthestudent
