It is designed for use in vertical and horizontal joints in concrete slabs and peripheral walls of structures and conduits conveying orcontaining liquid and of buried walls of pumping stations. Masterflex PVC Waterstop is composed oftwo sections: Moving and anchoring part The surface of the anchoring parts of the Masterflex PVCWaterstop is furnished with ribs and naps. This profile has two important functions to fulfil: To increase the anchoring power of the waterstop in the concrete To lengthen the way of penetration around the cast-in waterstop Even under high stresses, the anchoring parts of the embedded waterstop will not be stretched and could anchor to th e concrete. This tight bondin g will prevent the water to flow around the separated concrete and waterstop. The movement part of the waterstop alo ne will absorb the differences in width of the joint through contraction or constructural movements. Masterflex PVC Waterstop is resistant to attacks from ground and leakage water containing natural alkaline, acids and salts They are also non-rotting and resistant to the effects from short time exposure to oils and greases. When exposed permanently to oils and greases the most suitable raw materials should be specified. Masterflex PVC Waterstop is made in accordance to the corps. of Engineers Specification CRD C-570, C- 572, C-573 and ASTM D-412, D-638, D-746, D-792, D- 2240. It is also approved by WRc for suitable use with potable water. Selection of waterstopCentrally placed or surface mounted types can beapplied when the waterstop has the function of preventing water penetration from outside to inside(ground water, rain water, etc.)
For structures where water is intended to be retaininside for long periods such as swimming pools, sewerage plants, tunnels, channels etc., centrallyplaced types of waterstops should be fixed on the sidewhere the water pressure is existing or expected. Therefore, surface mounted waterstops are not advisedin the above mentioned situations as the risk of
mechanical damage for the unprotected surface type isconsiderably increased.
Steel shutters make it difficult to fix the waterstop ontothem; therefore centrally placed types are preferred insuch case.
Structures with tight and complicated reinforcementsmake it often impossible or it is too time consuming toinstall centrally placed waterstops; in such cases, surface mounted ones are preferred and advised.
Where high water pressure is to be expected, centrallyplaced types are preferred. This is because thepassage for the eventually penetrating water to runaround the waterstop is longer for the centrally placedones than for the surface mounted types, providing that
they have the same width as illustrated in the sketchesshown. Centre bulb types must be used for expansion joints and all other joints where the reinforcement barsdo not pass through the joint between the slabs.
Dumb-bell types are sufficient for construction jointswhere no differential movement is permitted and theplenar movement is only by concrete contraction.
Selection of size of waterstopExperience has proved that the application of a fewsimple rules will ensure a satisfactory choice:
The overall width of the waterstop should be equal or little less than the thickness of the concrete slab intowhich it is placed.
The width of the waterstop should be at least six timesthe size of the largest used aggregate.
The waterstop should be positioned in the centre of theslab.
Fixing and installationThe sealing functions of a waterstop however, can onlybe achieved properly, when all necessary measures are
taken into consideration for the installation. Besidestight weldings, it is essential to fasten the waterstopproperly to the reinforcement rods or to the formworkshutters, so that the profile cannot be moved out of position during placement of fresh concrete. Fullattention must be paid also while concrete is beingpoured so that no air pockets are created; the profilemust be embedded completely in the concrete, therefore it is important to prevent leaks along the faceof the shutters and the waterstop. To enable thewaterstop be wired securely to the reinforcement barsto other suitable points.
