As a result of the management courses, I was able to learn how to manage and maintain a successful retail establishment by evaluating all aspects of an organizations’ external and internal situation. This merchandising plan incorporated creating a collection with (!'$.9&./#'$/8 $#',,6+:$(/$"$#.'%6*%$("&:'($market, developing a merchandising assortment and delivery plan, planning a retail selling space, implementing visual merchandising techniques, and designing a marketing plan for the collection.

During the summer of 2011, I was fortunate to have a visual merchandising internship with Ralph Lauren. After the internship ended, I continued with the company as a freelancer. Through the internship experience, I created a portfolio documenting my experiences. I learned the processes of interior displays, window displays, and semi annual changes in the home department. After being trained during the internship, I have developed several interior displays. This involves using directives from corporate to understand the lifestyle and create looks, pulling the merchandise from stock, dressing and pinning the mannequin, and accessorizing and styling the mannequin.

Residing in Chicago, Paige Shanley is a student at Columbia College Chicago and works as a visual merchandising freelancer for Ralph Lauren. Growing up on a farm in a small town, she loves being immersed in the city’s fashion industry through her involvement in Columbia College Fashion Association and volunteering for fashion events with StyleChicago.com. Upon graduation in May 2012, she is looking forward to utilizing her coursework and freelancing experience to pursue a career in the fashion industry. As for her career path, she has interests in retail management, visual styling, and retail buying, however she is staying open-minded and is willing to relocate as needed.
