A little frightening at first if youve never done it, but youll be surprised at how many passerbys really enjoy listening. There are more outdoor accordionists around now than in the last 5 decades. New England is always one of the last to come around, but I strongly recommend that you try it at least once. You will be surprised. As Joe noted at our July meeting the annual membership drive is upon us. As mentioned in our last newsletter, our overall goal is to increase our membership. So here is a plea to look for some stray accordionists, who are looking for a place, once a month, to release their pent up accordion energies. Thanks again to Dan for his efforts in pulling together the play around. This was our second attempt at this and proved to be a great time. All who come to a meeting, with an accordion, are invited to join along. Dan Dempsey gave us a member tech tip in discussing the Hemiola of Hemiolia, a rhythmic technique of super imposing 2 notes in the time of 3 notes, or just the reverse, 3 notes in the time of 2. Used in Scandanavian music. The term hemiola (from the Greek, ’one-and-a- half’) may also be used where, in a triple time rhythm, two bars are arranged to have three beats where the middle beat is tied across the bar-line; so, for example, in a piece in 3/4, two bars are made up of three minims (half-notes). Joe entertained us with his version and sing a long of O Them Coconuts. Another great time had by all. Donna returned from her world wind tour and luckily was able to get to our July meeting to bring the ensemble back together again. This time, Donna stretched our sight reading abilities with the on the spot multi part performances of Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer. It is always better to have a teacher push you a little to improve your abilities. The outcome was definitely entertaining and helped improved my sight reading. Hope to see you all at our August 23rd meeting at the VFW Hall...Bob Thank you to the performers at our July meeting! Now is a truly great time to take your accordion outdoors and play around. A little frightening at first if youve never done it, but youll be surprised at how many passerbys really enjoy listening. There are more outdoor accordionists around now than in the last 5 decades. New England is always one of the last to come around, but I strongly recommend that you try it at least once.

Think there is a chance that we Accordionists will ever see an ad like this one again?

I doubt it!

This ad appeared in the August, 1931 issue of "THE ETUDE Music Magazine".

What is interesting to note is that this ad appeared during the height of the Great Depression in the U.S.A. which began in October, 1929.

I wonder how many musicians took advantage of this "opportunity"?

A bit of nostalgia for your enjoyment! Long Live the Accordion!
