From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers

In our discussion of obstacles to our mission, we have mentioned a few foundational “spirits” and discussed the topic of personal sin. When we give ourselves to growth in holiness and to the mission of evangelization, we give our whole person – body, mind, and soul. It is not only explicitly spiritual and moral areas that can hinder our giving of ourselves to that mission. Psychological issues can also get in the way and become obstacles to personal growth in holiness and mission. Carl Jung said, “Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside awakes.” Beginning on December, 2, 2012, I began a series on psychological deterrents to growth in holiness. Let us review them in light of the question of mission.

Denial. Denial is a survival mechanism, and it can be a good thing in that it gives us time to regain the strength that we need to look at and deal with difficult things. But if we get stuck in denial, it seriously impedes our growth toward healing and holiness. It causes a person to believe nothing is wrong, or that what is wrong is external to the individual. It clouds the person’s view such that he or she cannot see that the struggle toward holiness is within and that real change on his or her part is necessary.

Co-dependency. The Mayo Clinic describes co-dependency as follows: “a pattern of psychologically unhealthy behaviors that are learned by individuals as a way of coping with a family environment marked by ignored or denied emotional turmoil . . . people with codependency seem to habitually form relationships that are one-sided and emotionally destructive.” They give, but their giving is not free – it flows from woundedness and can be obsessive and even desperate. In mission and ministry, the person living with co-dependency may exhibit behaviors such as over-responsibility, self-neglect, unassertiveness, indirect methods of communication (games, insinuations, triangulations), an inability to set healthy boundaries , approval-seeking, controlling behaviors (they make themselves indispensable by becoming a “switchboard” to facilitate communication between groups. This is actually a way to secure their position and to control the flow of information), rigidity, defensiveness (they are not open to critical feedback), and comparing (they evaluate their worth by measuring it against others).

Passive Aggression. Passive Aggression has been described as “a personality trait disturbance characterized by immaturity and a failure to develop an adequate balance between dependence and independence, and between aggressiveness and submissiveness.” In mission and ministry, the person struggling with this psychological issue carries anger which can be exhibited in three ways: 1. Timid, helpless, always needs reassurance and needs others to make his or her decisions. 2. A sullen, disgruntled attitude and actions that disrupt the wishes of others. 3. Becoming irritated and openly hostile at the slightest frustration, rebelling and taking unwarranted authority. Such anger under-mines the communion of those walking together in mission and ministry.

Narcissism. The Mayo Clinic defines personality disorders as “conditions in which people have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in relationships and in other areas of their life, such as work or school.” People with Narcissistic Personality Disorder believe that they are better than others and exhibit arrogant behavior that manifests a lack of empathy for others. They generally think the world revolves around them and come across as cocky, self-centered, manipulative, and demanding. They are convinced that they are special and act accordingly. They often gripe, criticize and complain (because, “obviously” they could do it better). They are inflexible and demanding. All of this, though, usually masks a fragile self-esteem. Such people are very damaging to mission and cannot “follow,” which is a necessary spiritual posture for the Christian who desires to answer the Lord’s command, “follow me.” Many who have struggled to reach for holiness on our shared journey of the past five years have experienced the ugliness that narcissism, arrogance, and pomposity can bring to a community. It was a rather prophetic word from the Spirit that, in my first bulletin column for St. Augustine, printed August 8, 2010, I quoted our patron, St. Augustine, who said, “Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.”

If we are to be free to enter into mission and ministry, we must address our human psychological needs and their impact on our mission. If necessary, professional help ought to be sought. While directed at a specific audience, St. John Paul II’s words about the importance of human formation can be applied to all who seek to collaborate in mission and ministry, when he said that they “should mold [their] human personality in such a way that it becomes a bridge and not an obstacle for others in their meeting with Jesus Christ the Redeemer of humanity.” (Pastores Dabo Vobis, 43).
