From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers We continue our sharing of the second part of the sixth year review discussing our Baptismal Vocation. 5. Stillness

(The “From the Pastor” Column of the Bulletin of February 28, 2016.) My identity does not come from what I do or from how “useful” I am. My identity is found

in the Heavenly Father’s love for me. My life is not meant to be drudgery. Jesus came that I might have life and to have it to the full. Practicing stillness is an important tool in helping me rediscover who I am, and WHOSE I am. In silence, stillness, and leisure, I can rest from the weariness of racing and be comforted by the arms of a loving Father.

6. Beauty (The “From the Pastor” Column of the Bulletin of March 6, 2016.) Exposure to the arts, to the humanities, to beauty, is essential in spiritual and human formation. Any program of formation

must include training in the appreciation of beauty. For this reason I was so insistent, at the end of my first year here, to begin a concert series. Beauty heals us, forms us, and lifts us from despair. Beauty tunes our eyes to see the stars, to gaze heavenward toward the infinite for which we were made.

7. Trust (The “From the Pastor” Column of the Bulletin of March 13, 2016.)

To be open to an emotionally and spiritually intimate relationship with someone requires vulnerability and the capacity to open one’s heart. While entering into an intimate relationship with God requires the act of the intellect to assent to God’s will in faith, it too is a relationship of vulnerability that is augmented by the more psychological assent of trust.

8. Humility (Homily for Holy Thursday, 2016.)

St. Teresa of Avila teaches that humility is “walking in the truth.” By this she means walking in the Truth of God and the truth of ourselves. For her, the basis of humility is self-knowledge. The goal is to see ourselves as God sees us. This means a recognition of one’s God-given talents as well as a confession of one’s sins and defects. And yet, true knowledge of oneself can be had only in relationship to God, for we are all creatures of God.

9. Tenderness (Homily for Good Friday, 2016.)

Since roughly the fourteenth century, “tenderness” is a word that means: "kind, affectionate, [and] loving." In many areas of our culture today, however, tenderness is seen as weakness. Many people are taught to live as sharks, attacking at the slightest sight of blood. Many are taught to wear masks that do now allow the heart to be revealed authentically to others. . . Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has called for a “Revolution of Tenderness.” In the homily of the Mass to inau-gurate his Petrine ministry, he reflected on St. Joseph as the protector of the Holy Family. . . “Saint Joseph appears as a strong and courageous man, a working man, yet in his heart we see great tenderness, which is not the virtue of the weak but rather a sign of strength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love. We must not be afraid of goodness, of tenderness!”

10. Joy (Homily for Easter, 2016.) “Joy” is an effect of charity and means “delighting in divine friendship for God and others.” Far more significant than hap-piness, a word that comes from the same root as haphazard, joy is an experience of the depths of love. It is possible to crowd a lifetime with superficial and passing pleasures without ever experiencing authentic joy. As the Venerable Fulton Sheen says: “Man alone, of all creatures [of the earth], has a soul which is capable of knowing the infinite; he alone has aspirations beyond what he sees and touches and feels; he alone can attain everything in the world and still not be satisfied. That is why, when he misses the infinite and eternal for which he was made and which alone can satisfy, he despairs.”

Together, We Change Lives

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made a commitment to the 2016 Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 220 families and individuals have responded generously, con-tributing $329,915. That is 70 percent to the goal. However, we need the support of all members of St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center if we are to be successful in reaching our parish com-bined goal of $476,456. If you have not yet responded to the 2016 ABCD, please make a gift by using the pledge envelopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it!
