    Lara ReynoldsLara Reynolds has

participated in a variety of programs at Mason Community Center since becoming a member over a year ago. As

part of the Better Your Body Bingo program early this year, she wrote about what motivates her to keep exercising. Perhaps youll find some inspiration in her words.

Conident is the New MeWeve all heard the catch phrases that surround the

ideas of health. Skinny is the new Black, and Strong is the new Beautiful. Heres my version "Confi dent is the New me.

I dont subscribe to the idea that I have to be skinny to be popular, strong to be attractive or anything else that the magazines try to sell. What I buy into is the belief that confi dence in myself is what I need, period. Im not saying that thin isnt beautiful or strong isnt attractive. I am saying that without confi dence, skinny and strong are just that. Confi dence makes you smile bigger, laugh harder and push yourself farther. Confi dence allows you to accept the days when you just dont feel like working out, or the meals that end in dessert. Confi dence lets you forgive yourself for gaining a few pounds in the winter months, or

Member Highlightnot shaking the baby weight as quickly as you had hoped.

Confi dence has helped me to keep going to the gym even when Im not seeing the results I want (because I know Ill get there eventually!), to smile through workouts even when Im exhausted, and to encourage others to join me in classes so they can experience what I do. With confi dence, your skinny is skinnier, your strong is stronger and your potential is greater. So dont call me skinny, strong, or pretty just call me confi dent!

mason Community Center has played an essential role in getting me to this confi dent frame of mind. It started with Kids Korner, where I was given peace of mind every time I dropped my son off so I could enjoy a workout. He was (and still is!) given such excellent care and attention, has the opportunity to make new friends every day and is comfortable enough that I can confi dently go into my workouts. Ive become a group exercise junky as a result of some pretty great instructors who, from the beginning of my membership, have taken an active role in helping me to get back in shape. Ive made friends with instructors who continue to push me and show me new ways to meet my goals, encourage me on the bad days and even check in on me when I miss a class. Ive made friends with other patrons who introduce me to new classes and partner with me to make classes even more fun. I couldnt ask for a better place to help me feel and be my best!

Down To The Coreby Steve Kranjc, Personal Trainer atMason Community Center

Everyone loves a strong and slim midsection, right?

lets do some core work! is a phrase used often in the gym to start work on the abdominal muscles. Core and abs go hand in hand, but there is more to the core than just abs.

The core can be defi ned as the muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis. To picture the core of your body, imagine seeing your body with your upper and lower extremities hidden. Whats left is your core. The abs, hips, and lower back are some of the muscles included in the core.

The most important thing to know, however, is that every muscle relies on your core. It is the base of all movement and provides stability to the rest of the body. To get that toned midsection, each area needs to be addressed.

one of the biggest responsibilities of the core is to help with posture. Do you sit hunched over a desk all day? Training your core can prevent poor posture but can only do so much if youre hunched over the keyboard for forty-plus hours a week. A good tip for people who sit at work is to stay tall through your upper body, keep your head up and your shoulder blades back whenever you start to feel yourself slouching.

So how do you get a stronger core? Start by incorporating exercises that will address your core. my favorite exercise is the plank! I think I just heard people moan, but the plank helps develop strength in the core, shoulders, arms, and glutes. Its a total body exercise in one movement!

The good thing about a plank is that the longer you can hold a plank in place, the more resilient your lower back will be to injury. You can perform a plank anywhere. Just get into a pushup position on the fl oor. Your forearms should be fl at on the fl oor and elbows bent at 90 degrees so that your shoulders are right over your elbows. The weight distribution should be equal from your toes to your forearms. The most important thing is to be in a straight line from head to feet. This will activate your core muscles and help you have a strong midsection.

oh waitdid I forget to mention the goal is to hold the plank for two minutes? Get out, go to the gym, and plank on!

Meet The Prolike many professional golfers, marianne began playing golf when she was young. Her dad got her started when she was just eight years old. She went on to play for middletown High School and the University of South Carolina. In the late 1980s, marianne played the mini-tours in Florida until she qualifi ed for the lPGA tour in 1990. She continued on the lPGA tour until 2006.

marianne came to The Golf Center at Kings Island in the spring of 2008 and has been there for the main golf season each year since then. It has been interesting to her to learn the other side of tournaments participating as an organizer rather than a golfer. She gets even more enjoyment out of teaching and passing on the knowledge she has gained during her career to both young golfers and adults looking to improve their game.

marianne likes to keep it simple by focusing on the basicsgrip, stance, and posture. She loves to talk about the golf swing and how it works. Her goal is to build a golfers knowledge of playing the shot with the greatest amount of success and the least amount of risk.

Dear Mason Resident,You cant miss it. Out is In! is combined issue of Mason Ma ers and CenterPoint has plenty of reminders that this

is the theme for National Parks and Recreation Month in July. e city is proud to provide outdoor recreational opportunities for residents of Mason and their guests. Many of

these would not be possible without the tax revenue generated by Mason businesses. Last year, 82% of the income tax revenue received by Mason came from businesses in Mason. Put di erently, for every dollar paid by a resident, approximately $4.55 is generated by businesses. Residents pay a relatively small portion of what it takes to provide a variety of city services, including parks.

Mason has 291 acres in seven city parks. Opportunities for outdoor fun range from swimming at Lou Eves Municipal Pool to tennis and basketball at Heritage Oak Park to baseball games at several of our parksand more. If you prefer a quieter adventure, sit on one of the benches in Pine Hill Lakes Park and enjoy the birds, or take a stroll on the paved path through Frank Hosea Woods. Most of our parks have paved paths, which makes it easy for those on foot or wheels. I encourage you to visit our parks or check the web at www.imaginemason.org/things-to-do/parks.cfm to learn more about the opportunities available at Mason parks.

One of the next parks to be developed may be Common Ground. E orts are currently underway by the Mason Parks & Recreation Foundation to raise funds for this active park that will accommodate people of all abilities. For information, visit www.masonparksfoundation.org. One of their fundraising e orts is through the sale of the MasonOpoly game being developed for the citys bicentennial. See page 3 of this newsle er for information.

In addition to parks, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor entertainment. Look through CenterPoint for free outdoor concerts and a park scavenger hunt. Try a round of golf or some lessons at the city-owned Golf Center at Kings Island. Join the Great Mason Chase in August, where you and a partner bike through the city and try di erent challenges at local businesses.

Speaking of bikes, bike paths are also part of our outdoor opportunities. Mason has 20.5 miles of bike paths and I expect that to grow in the not too distant future when the Tylersville Road bike path is connected with Kings Island Drive. is summer, the bike path from Mason-Montgomery Road along Nixon Park Drive will be extended into the park, providing a safer entry to the park for walkers and bicyclists.

Opportunities for outdoor fun are abundant in Mason. See you outdoors! Before closing and on behalf of City Council and city employees, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families of Ken Murowski

and Frances Gilbert. Ken was an architect of the citys growth, having served for 18 years as a member of Masons Zoning Board of Appeals and then Planning Commission. His expertise in commercial real estate was invaluable in his desire to guide development to create an a ractive community. He was also a founder of the Race to Anyplace, an event held each year at Mason Community Center to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Frances Gilbert was nearly a life-long resident o
