VALUE CARD PROGRAM BRINGS DISCOUNTS One of the ways the Chamber creates member value is through unique membership services. These include the very valuable referrals
through the “Hometown USA Visitors Center” at the Chamber office. One other benefit is the availability of the Chamber’s “Member
Value Card” to all employees and associates of Chamber member businesses and organizations. Other Chamber members offer discounts
on their various products and services exclusively to holders of the “Member Value Card.” This member-to-member discount program
has several purposes: to showcase Chamber member businesses, to bring new and increased business to participants, and to provide
another opportunity for area folks to shop locally.
Business members can opt in, change offers, or even opt out at any time since a current list of discount offers
is maintained on the Chamber’s www.masonchamber.org website under “Shop Mason Values.” Quantities of
Member Value Cards are available to members from the Chamber office. Companies that look to gain
marketing exposure by participating in the program may call the Chamber office at 676-1046. You may also
contact the Chamber at [email protected] by e-mail. Stop by the office and get your free
cards today! Start saving money!

MASON IS ROOTED IN THE PAST AND GROWING TOWARD THE FUTURE
In 1836, Charles Noble knew that Michigan
would be seeking a central location for a new capital when it became a state. He purchased an area of forest, cleared 20 acres, and founded Mason Center, named after Michigan’s “boy governor” Stevens T. Mason. The "Center" part was soon dropped. Noble had Mason named as the county seat of Ingham
County. In 1847 however, the state chose Lansing Township 12 miles northwest to be its capital due its potential for greater water power. Ingham County's first downtown courthouse was built in 1843, was replaced in 1858, and then again with the current “quintessential” structure in 1905. In recent years, major movie productions have included a number of scenes of the Ingham County Courthouse and Mason’s downtown district.
In March of 1865, when Abraham Lincoln was still President, Mason was incorporated as a village; in 1875 the town became a city. The community celebrated its sesquicentennial with “Mason 150” events throughout 2015. In the 1800s, Mason was the center of Ingham County activity, even more than Lansing, the state capital. In 1877, Lansing attempted to take the status of county seat for itself, but the two cities made an agreement that moved some county offices and courts to Lansing in exchange for Mason remaining the
county seat. As a result, Michigan is the only state in the country with a capital city that is not also a county seat.
Up into the early 1900s, the local Ojibwa tribe had a visible presence in the town. The Ingham County Fair has been held in Mason for over 160 years. Since the early 1900s, many people were employed producing baby formula in Mason, but that operation was discontinued in the 1990s. Today, Mason is home to the headquarters of Dart Container Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturers of foam cups and food service storage
containers. Ingham County, Gestamp Mason, Ingham Intermediate School District, and many financial institutions are also major employers in the Mason area. However, cattle can still be seen grazing within the city limits on the north side of town.
Mason is not a “bedroom community,” like some of the suburbs of Lansing. Actually, more people work in Mason during the day than sleep here at night. We encourage the sustainable growth and development that an emphasis on buying locally provides to our community. Mason continues to grow, with over 8,200 people living in the city limits and nearly 20,000 in the immediate area.
