An exciting and thought provoking new group exhibition of 9 Khmer and international visual artists.

TRIBE and Rosewood Phnom Penh invites you to explore the theme of masks, whether physical, mental or spiritual.

At sometime in our lives we have to wear a form of mask to survive or thrive.

The last year around the world we have been forced to wear a face mask, to cover up and to protect each other which

has sometimes caused great divisions in society. For 1000’s of years masks have been used for many reasons, theatre,

medical, rituals, religious, protection, super heroes, disguise, civil protests, halloween and of course to celebrate carnivals.

So TRIBES artists invite you to ask,

WHO AM I?

Nat DiMaggioI believe the role of a curator is to reflect the state of the world – people’s emotions, connections, opinions and reflections. It enables the heralding of a new direction in art and it gives a voice to the diverse range of artists.

Natale Antonino Di Maggio, known to his friends as Nat, was born in the UK in 1969. His father was born in Sicily and his mother had a Scandanavian/Irish heritage. With a large extended family that included artisans, art was able to bridge the cultural differences and languages. Francesco, Nat’s father and his mother, Emma, didn’t speak the same language when they met, however Francesco won Emma’s heart through singing to her and creating art.

Nat has had an interest in the arts from the tender young age of seven, where he won a national award for his design of a poster for a local community initiative. In 2008, Nat became a freelance art curator in the UK ranging in collections from school art projects to Turner Art prize winners.

In his diverse career, one of his most memorable experiences was being awarded the 2016 Citizen of the year for a Community Art project in East London. Nat and his partner of 30 years, Terry began travelling to SE Asia in 2008, and fell in love with Cambodia, its culture and people. This led to them opening Tribe Art Gallery in SiemReap in 2018. The mission of the gallery is to nurture and support local Khmer talent, established and emerging. Inviting international artists to showcase their work, share their experiences and skills, tell their stories enabling Khmer artists to realise their global artistic talents.The range of artists represented by Tribe Art Gallery is diverse and includes artist specialising in photography, fine art and street art.

Nat strongly believes that art can bring people together; it doesn’t discriminate, poor from rich, young or old or different cultures. Art is a bridge that can straddle the differences, enlightening, informing and sharing different beliefs, culture, stories of despair, travel, hope and above all love.

Carne GriffithsWorking primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as tea, Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a com-bination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life. Images are recorded in a dreamlike sense onto the page where physical boundaries are unimportant. His work creates a journey of escapism which focuses on scenes of awe and wonder, projecting a sense of abandonment and inviting the viewer to share and explore this inner realm.

Originally from Liverpool, Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone in 1995. After completing a one-year KIAD fellowship and moving to London he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. Here he worked as a gold wire em-broidery designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director. Carne produced intricate designs for the military and film, theatre, fashion and advertising industries. His designs for ‘Red Death Coat’ was used in ‘The Phantom of the Opera‘.

Since establishing his own studio in 2010, Carne has exhibited in the UK and overseas with work shown at the Royal Academy and with solo exhibitions in London, Hong Kong, Milan, Hamburg and Siem Reap.

EveEve is an independent, self-taught photographer from London. Although pho-tography is her main medium, she experiments with photo-editing software in order to create unique pieces. This will be her first exhibition.

“The idea behind my work is to create pieces that are unclear and slightly ambiguous to remain open to interpretation. My artwork prompts the viewer to create their own narratives and interpretations for them.”

Interpretations will vary which then creates a multitude of truths, making it impossible to clearly define what these artworks actually mean or represent overall.

Photography is my chosen medium as it enables a moment in time to be captured; creating something that exists on its own and something that exists beyond or outside of the photograph.

The artworks are left untitled due to the inspiration taken from the follow-ing quote by Pierre Bonnard: “The precision of naming takes away from the uniqueness of seeing.”

Nak NoyNakNoywas born and raised in SiemReap, Cambodia in 1999. For as long as he can remember his need to create art was the only thing that he could think about. All through junior and high school he spent his days obsessively draw-ing and painting on paper, in books and on his family’s farm walls. Every min-ute of every day his passion for art drove him forward and filled his life with joy. He used his art to escape to another world, a world full of hope and love, even though real life has its ups and downs in NakNoy’sworld there is always beauty & love. His signature style is instantly recognisable and highly collect-able. His paintings are highly intricate and multi-layered with metaphors & symbolism. The recurring themes of strong women and female empowerment come from the love of the strongest women in his life, his mother and also the hopes he has for his younger sister to be a strong, independent Khmer woman. He also adorns his women with jewellery and intricate costumes, these are to further enforce the message of women’s beauty & strength.Nan Noyis a self taught artist, however we are delighted that he starts a three year visual arts course at PharePonleuSelpakin Battambang January 2021, watch out NakNoyis going to fill this world with more love & beauty.

Kak Sok PhiromPhiromwas born in 1988. He is the eldest of 11 siblings and was born in ‘Site B’ a Cambodian refugee camp on the Thai borders. He now lives in SiemReap.In 2009 he began working as a tour leader. His keen eye coupled with his passion for his country, its heritage and his ability to enable his guests see his country “through Khmer eyes” set him apart.Today he works as an established commercial and events photographer. He organises and runs unique Cambodian immersive photography tours and takes time to further explore his passion for both photography and his beloved country by going ‘walkabout’.

He grew up with a father who had a passion for photography and was once again immersed in this world when surrounded by clients trying to capture their experiences. His passion returned and a truly naturally gifted photogra-pher began to emerge.

Phirom’spassion is clearly communicated through his work. His ability to connect with his surroundings and the people he encounters along the way shines through in his work.

He builds relationships, trust and a true connection with his subjects and has a natural gift to be able to capture these emotions and feelings in his work.“I photograph with my heart, my emotion, when I feel that connection to my subject I take the picture”.

Jinx DavisI am presently living in Zagreb, Croatia and missing Cambodia dearly. I grew up in the USA surrounded by artists, writers, and performers and knew in childhood that I didn’t want to live without color, contradictions, movement, and contrast, in whatever form they could be explored.

I have been an entrepreneur and actress for over five decades and have directed a small arts non-profit since 1992. The Living Arts Corporation has accomplished delightful acts of love and art that have introduced tens of thousands to theater, literature, performance, and visual arts.

Freedom is meeting each other without preconceptions or labels.Inner Gardens by Jinx Davis The world has been fascinated with tattoos for thousands of years. These markings have served as self-expression, amulets, status symbols, fashion, declarations of allegiance and love, signs of religious beliefs, and even forms of humiliation and punishment. Yet they may also exist because humans fail to see each other deeply and we feel invisible. We can feel so invisible that we tattoo our bodies with ink deep beneath our skin.I explore the inner gardens, markings and tattoos of the soul by imagining what is behind a face. I look for the Face behind the faces. No one should feel invisible.

These five pieces are donated to Tribe Gallery in the hopes that clients and friends will purchase them knowing the proceeds will go to the Terry Mcllkenny Education Fund.

Din TeangborinDin was born in Kampot where he remembers, as a child, obsessively creating images with a stick in the soil.

He trained as an architect but his true love has always been visual art. He set up his studio in Phnom Penh some ten years ago and now sells work all over the world.

Din has exhibited extensively all over the world and is always in demand and highly collectable.

His work has a primary focus of the dancers of the Cambodian Royal Ballet and his floating Apsara are instantly recognised and loved.

These two pieces reflect him in his pure form.He has been very alone during this Covid period and had used this time to focus on his love for art and to produce his best work to date.

Pure EvilCharles Uzzell Edwards a.k.a. PURE EVIL grew up in South Wales, UK. He spent his teenage years customising his own clothes this love of urban street style led him to do fashion degree in London where he earned a bit of a reputation as a troublemaker, he decided to leave London for a two week trip to California, which ended up being a 10-year stay in San Francisco.

It was there that Charles started to notice the character street artwork of ‘TWIST’ and ‘REMINISCE’ and the work of other skateboard and graffiti artists. It was upon his return to London in 2000 that he hit the ground running and after a stint working at Banksy’s SANTAS GHETTO Guerrilla retail show, he started stencilling and spraying his signature bunny tag around London. The character came from the guilt he felt when he shot and killed a rabbit in the countryside when he was 10.

In 2007 Charles opened Pure Evil Gallery, his first gallery in Shoreditch, London. Six years later opened up the second, larger gallery just two doors from the original space. The galleries have been an incubator for up and coming street artists from around the world as well as being the studio for Charles’ own PURE EVIL artwork. The success of his Nightmare series of dripping celebrity portraits has taken him around the world and has recently had successful shows across the USA, Hong Kong, France, Brazil, SiemReap now Phnom Penh.

Hour SobenBorn in 1998, Sobenwas relatively unknown in the Cambodian art world until 2018. After working in a gallery in his native province of SiemReap he was inspired to take to the canvas himself. Sobencreates beautiful, colourful compositions marrying traditional and contemporary Khmer motifs.

In the past year Sobenhas been developing his signature style grey-stone faces juxtaposed with vibrant almost psychedelic backgrounds. Sobenhas won and placed in numerous art competitions across the country, including winning the 2018 KbachArtist Competition and placing second in Soo Art Gallery’s Young Artist Competition.

Sobenhas collaborated and apprenticed with internationally renowned urban artists from UK, Germany & Poland and was also the first Khmer artist commissioned to publicly paint a government building in Phnom Penh. His murals can be viewed across the city at the German Embassy, British Ambassador’s Residence & Factory Phnom Penh.

Fin DacSelf-taught artist and nonconformist, his modern geishas and Apsara are exhibited around the world. Fin Dac works with stencils and free hand, a specific painting leaving the impression of spatters with pop colours around the eyes, just like a mask.

Fin Dac loves beautiful women and is fascinated by Asian mystic and mysterious beauty. With a keen eye on details, he has a real aesthetic style that makes him different from other urban artists.

On the artistic scene since 2008, Fin Dac gets his influence from dark and graphic novels of Francis Bacon or Audrey Beardsley. His first creation was made when his friend T-wat asked him to realise a graffiti painting in front of the passers-by during an art show for Banksy.

Since then, he paints and exhibits with well-known artists like Goldie, Nick Walker, Jeff Aerosol… He participated in a festival in ‘Vitry sur Seine’ where he left a wonderful portrait of Samuel Beckett. He also was in Brest in 2011 and took part in the Crimes of Minds project, where he made a gorgeous geisha with impressive details.

“When I paint, I forget everything for hours, even days. I have no plans until when I find something,” says Fin Dac.Recognized by the art community, he works for top brands such as the Royal Albert Hall, Armani, G-Star, Red Bull and also worked for the Olympic Games of London 2012.

A/P Artists’ ProofThe initials ‘AP’ instead of a number at the bottom of an image

means ‘artists’ proof’. With artists’ prints these are a necessary partof the production process, where proofs are taken until the artist is

happy with the print.

H/c Out of TradeHors Commerce means ‘out of trade’ in English. HCs and APs are

very similar except the former is only available directly fromthe artist. A HC is given as a gift to the artist for allowing the

publisher to print their images. Of all the special prints, the HCs arethe most valuable, because of their rarity.

This exhibition is dedicate to one of the co-founders ofTRIBE, Terry McIlkenny who sadly & suddenly passed in

July last year.

He always knew who he was and dedicatedhis whole life to helping others reach their goals.

An art education fund has been set up to honour him,And in January 2021 the fund sees a new students start a 3

Nat បានចប់អារមមណ៏កលើវរ័ិយរិលបៈតំាងពីកៅកក្មងេចីក្នុងវយ័្បំាពីរឆ្ន ំមក្កមែុះ ជាកពលន្ែលគាត់បាន នុះពានរងាវ ន់ថាន ក់្ជាតិកលើការរចនាតទ ំងរបូភាព ក្នុងក្មមវធីិគំនិតផតួចកផតើមរហ្គមន៍មូលោា ន។ ក្នុងឆ្ន ំ២០០៨ គាត់បានកាែ យជាគទនុរក្ស ឯក្រាជយមាន ក់្កៅច្ក្ភ្ពអ្ង់កគែរ ក្នុងចំកណ្តមអ្នក្ន្ែល្តូវបានក្ជើរករ ើរពីគក្មាងរិលបៈស្ថលា និងអ្នក្ នុះរងាវ ន់ Turner Art ។ ក្នុងអាជីពច្មុុះរបរ់គាត់ បទពិកស្ថធន៏ែ៏ចង់ចំបំផុតមួយគឺ ការទទួលបានពានរងាវ ន់ Citizen ២០១៦ ្បចំឆ្ន ំ ក្នុងគក្មាងរិលបៈរហ្គមន៍ (Community Art project) កៅទី្ក្ុងឡុងន្ប៉ាក្ខ្ងកក្ើត។
