Overview
Masdar
MISSION
To advance the development
and adoption of commercially
viable solutions in renewable
energy and sustainable real
estate that address the
sustainability challenges of
the UAE, the Middle East and
international markets.
VISION
To make Abu Dhabi the
world’s reference for
knowledge and collaboration
on the advancement of
renewable energy, clean
technologies and sustainable
development.
PURPOSE
To forge a link between the
fossil fuel economy of today
and the clean energy
economy of tomorrow -
helping to build a resilient
knowledge-based economy
as the most effective strategy
to secure the long-term
prosperity of the UAE.
HOW WE OPERATE
Masdar has turned vision into reality by:
• Deploying landmark clean energy projects in the UAE and
international markets
• Pioneering sustainable real estate
• Advancing clean-tech innovation
• Delivering world-class industry and knowledge platforms
Masdar
Masdar City
Masdar City aims to be one of the most sustainable urban
communities in the world.
A clean-tech cluster, free zone and investment zone,
Masdar City attracts companies seeking to commercialise
and deploy new energy technologies in the Middle East.
Masdar City buildings
designed to be at least
40%more energy and water
efficiency than
conventional urban
buildings
Masdar City to be first
“4 PEARL” community in Abu
Dhabi based on the
emirate’s mandatory
sustainability
Masdar City is pioneering sustainable mobility:
Driverless Personal Rapid Transport (PRT), providing electric mobility to more than 2
million passengers since 2010, operates 18 hours a day
Early adopter of electric vehicles, including Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan Leaf, converted
electric bus, etc.
Masdar recognizes that mobility is a key component of sustainable urban development

Masdar and MobilityMasdar Driverless Personal Rapid Transport (PRT)
Operational at Masdar City since 2010
Fleet size: 9 PRT vehicles
2 million+ passengers transported to date
Average daily passenger numbers: 1,500
Average total distance driven daily: 550 km
18 hours a day operation, 365 days a year
Average power consumption: 0.2kWh / km
Quiet operation
Light weight electric vehicles
Carbon benefit:
70% reduction over car
50% reduction over bus
Electric VehiclesTwo million and counting…
Global electric car stock still accounts for a small fraction, 0.2%, of the total passenger light-
duty vehicles in circulation worldwide (1 billion) (Source: Global EV outlook 2017 by IEA)
UAE:
Tesla opens its very first showroom in the region in Dubai.
50 new electric vehicles have been added to Dubai Taxi fleet and to reach 200 by 2019
Transportation is one of the key pillars of UAE Energy Strategy for 2050
Masdar City installed the first rapid charger in the Middle East back in 2011 and recently
added Tesla superchargers
Masdar EV rapid charger
Electric buses are available from various suppliers, and in operation in various cities around
the world
The electric bus market is moving beyond the demonstration phase into commercial
deployment
E.g. Public transport operator in Paris is planning to replace 80% of its existing bus fleet with electric
buses by 2025 – this translates to roughly 4,000 electric buses being deployed in the next 8 years
(RATP, 2017)
Adoption in the UAE (or Middle East) has been slow at best due to:
Concerns on the long-term performance of batteries
Higher requirements on thermal comfort management, during a long warm and hot
season
Electric Buses
Electric Buses
Benefits:
Reduction in CO2 emissions
Reduction in noise pollution
Improved air quality
Expected reduction in operational cost
Less tear & wear on the vehicle which leads to less maintenance
Reduced fire and explosion hazards
Less dependence on gas filling stations
Challenges:
Higher initial purchase price
E-buses are new to the market
Uncertainty on long term battery performance
Detailed operational testing is required
Masdar and Hafilat Industry, a bus manufacturer
based in Abu Dhabi, partnered to jointly develop and
test an operational prototype electric bus specifically
designed to operate under UAE’s challenging climatic
conditions
This project has four main strategic benefits:
Positioning Masdar’s role as one of the leaders in
electric transportation in the UAE
Overcomes the climate hurdles that make most
electric transportation unsuitable in this region
Develops a local design and manufacturing
capability
Leverage on Khalifa University of Science &
Technology (KUST) expertise
Current concept allows flexibility in developing different
sizes
Masdar InitiativeElectric Bus for Masdar City
Launch of E-Bus Concept in ADSW 2017
Length: 10.5 m; width: 2.5m; height: 3.2m
27 passenger seats + standees
≈ 150 km based on stop-start operation (ideal for Masdar City)
Light weight as it is made of unique Aluminum profiles
Low entry floor
Water cooled batteries
Batteries located at the rear of the bus for safe containment & enhanced modularity
Advanced AC cabin design
Electrochromic windows for smart & adaptive shading reducing cooling needs

Design reviews and support on components selection
Battery management and cooling
Heat mitigation and energy consumption
Route planning and charging
Monitoring and evaluation of performance of the bus
Monitoring of customer satisfaction
