Masakazu Kusakabe (Japan) is one of the most influential potters in the construc-tion of wood-fi red ovens -where uses its own design- and the fi ring in this type of kiln..

Knowing and controlling perfectly the complexi-ties of loading and fi ring a wood fi red oven, get unique glazes. He work with fi ring techniques to get different effects on the surface of its parts.

Since 1970 he has presented master classes, exhibitions and built different types of kiln as Anagamas, Jagamas (Snake oven), Smokeless... in prestigious places like Harvard and in different countries of America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. He has made several publications and has published a book of over 300 pages “Japanese Wood-fi red ceramics” about fi rings with wood, glazes and various Japanese techniques.

Building a Smokeless oven

This time in the course, smokeless oven will be built from potter own design with similar size to that performed in Harvard.

This wood oven for high temperature and very effi cient and sustainable combustion perform with their creator Masakazu Kusakabe master. The position and the relati-vely large size of the fi rebox and chimney tall enable effi -cient combustion and a good distribution of ashes.

Shino and Oribe glazes

The Shino glazes probably come from an alteration of Temmokus models, and are glazes consist primarily of felds-par and clay. Their colors usually range from milky white to orange. The Oribe glaze also come from Japan of the sixteen-th century, are of Mino type and can be green, black or brown.
