Adam Beeken is our new Director of Music Ministries. Here is a message from him:

I am so thankful for the warm welcome my family and I have received in the past few weeks. It is very good tobe home with you and renewing and creating friendships. In worshipping with you all, I am touched and excitedby the beautiful tapestry of faith on display. My hope is that we will all enter more deeply into the mysteries ofour faith in our experiences at Mass.

I believe a key part of this encounter and one of the most beautiful aspects of the Mass is how we offer ourselves(as we are) each time: “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, forour good, and the good of all his holy Church.” We say this phrase at each Mass, but we may not realize its fullimplications. That sacrifice is not only the bread, wine, and monetary offering, but it is also our entire person(body, mind, and spirit).

What does this have to do with music? Well, we are to offer our voice (no matter the quality) during the Massin praise, petition, thanksgiving, sorrow, joy, and in unity. So I encourage all of us to fully, loudly, and sincerelyoffer ourselves and our voices in song at each Mass—as the psalmist says “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD,all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing (Psalm 100).” Our full andactive participation is a beautiful gift, and I believe very pleasing to our Lord. The assembly at Mass is the largestand most important member of our music ministry, and I am honored to work with you all.

As for those of you with a particular interest in music: know there is a place for you in our music ministry. Allsingers, all ages, all instruments, all languages, and all abilities have a place to share for the praise and glory ofGod’s name. Consider joining our Easter Choir which will provide music for the liturgies of Holy Week. Wemeet on Sunday evenings from 6:45-8pm in the music room. Opportunities for children and youth will beannounced soon, and I would love to see awide variety of instruments used at each of our Masses. Do not hesitateto contact me with any questions.

School NewsPreK-B

In the month of FebruaryPreK-B  has been busyworking on identifyingletters in our own nameand  sorting  objects bycolor to help us reinforcecolor names and counting.

In February we also cele-brated Grandparents Day!

Mrs. Negron &

Mrs. Hughes

From the Principal . . .This last month of February has really been a “love”lymonth for us at Mary Queen School. Our PreK andKindergarten students got to show how much they lovedtheir Grandparents in our annual Grandparents Daycelebration. We danced and sang, laughed, it was a greatmorning and we got to spend it with our favorite people. The next day we showed our love with our Dads at ourFather Daughter Dance. The evening started in the churchwith Mass and then we moved to the gym where we triedto teach our Dads a dance move or two and although ourDads won the dance off, a good time was had by all.

Lots of things to be proud of and say congratulationsabout. To our second graders who received the Sacramentof Reconciliation this month. To our basketball playerswho completed another successful season of basketballand to our students who were recognized in the secondtrimester awards ceremony. Shew, it was a busy month.

The students sang "A Bushel and aPeck" and they made specials gifts to show how muchtheir love couldn't be contained. It was a lot of hard work, but they did a wonderful job!

PreK-C (continued)

PreK-DStudying Birds is a wonderful theme to implement in thepreschool classroom.  With spring around the corner weenjoyed learning all about our backyard friends.Childhood is the time to encourage and nurture earlyinterests in nature and understanding of the importance ofGod's living things. While listening to bird sounds thechildren enjoyed painting and decorating their bird box.

Mrs O'Dwyer & Mrs. Lugo

PreK-EPK-E has been enjoying Read Across America bycelebrating Dr. Seuss. We set up a birthday party in ourdramatic play center with party supplies, balloons, andcake. We have also been doing a lot of fun activities basedoff his book. We have been stacking cup towers, workingon rhyming, building and drawing cat in the hat, andjournaling about what we would do with the cat in the hat.We dressed up each day based on his books: we worestripes, hats, wacky socks, the color green, and picked ourfavorite color. We also read as many books as Mrs. Barrcould find.

Page 8: Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary March 2020

FIRST GRADEFirst grade has been busy learning how to write an opinionpaper.  We are enjoying taking surveys and graphing thedata.  This Lent, we are learning how 7-year olds fast, prayand give alms.

Karen Metheny, first grade teacher

SECOND GRADESecond grade students were given cards from their fourthgrade buddies, encouraging them in their preparations forFirst Reconciliation. They received this sacrament in mid-February and were so excited to share this special day withtheir friends and families. We are now beginning toprepare for First Holy Communion. One of the ways wewill do this is by performing a Passion Play on HolyThursday for our families and school community.

FOURTH GRADEWhat would it feel like to be a slave in Kentucky in the1850s? What would you do if you heard whisperings of asupposed path to freedom? Would you risk your life to tryto escape?

In February, 4th graders learned all about the rise ofslavery in the United States, the causes of the Civil War,the Underground Railroad, and the experiences of slavesin Kentucky. One day, the students were asked to putthemselves in the “shoes” of a slave and make somedecisions that might help them achieve freedom. Theactivity opened students’ eyes to some of the hardshipsslaves faced, and allowed them to experience the trust andstrong instincts necessary for slaves to escape on theUnderground Railroad.

Michelle Jackson

FIFTH GRADEThe 5th graders learned about biomes around the world. They spent time researching the individual biomes, thelocations of each, what makes them unique, and theanimals that inhabit the areas. Then, they worked ingroups to create a replica of their chosen biome to presentand teach to the class. They did an awesome job on theentire project. We are now moving onto the planet Earthand it’s valuable resources. Science can be so much fun!

Page 9: Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary March 2020

SIXTH GRADE

As part of Mrs. Richardson's 6th grade Language Artsreading of the book The Lion, the Witch, and theWardrobe, the students became set designers and createdadvertisements for the middle school production of theplay.

Deborah M. Richardson

SEVENTH GRADEThe 7th grade science classes at Mary Queen are finishinga unit about animals. In this unit, we dissected starfish tolearn about the external and internal anatomy of starfishand how they are uniquely created for their habitat andecological role. We also studied mammals and conducteda lab to see how human opposable thumbs affect our dailyactivities. It has been a great unit to examine God'screation more deeply and appreciate how He has createdus uniquely.

RELIGION7B religion students recently worked in groups to createtheir own modern day parable skits. They rehearsed andperformed for their class, and after receiving constructivefeedback from their peers, they made improvements andtook their show on the road (down the hall) to perform forthe 7A religion class. They did an excellent job conveyinga valuable moral lesson in their original parables. The 7th graders are also earning service hours in Religionclass by helping set up the gym on Fridays for the MQ fishfries.

Page 10: Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary March 2020

Social ConcernsBUILD: This is a very busy and visible time of yearfor the BUILD Justice Ministry. Justice MinistryNetwork members were commissioned Feb 29-March 1 and are now inviting people to attend theNehemiah Action which is on Monday, April 27, 6:30at Heritage Hall. There is a display as you enter thefront doors of the church that shows our JusticeMinistry Network of team members, the JusticeMinistry Network Members on these teams, and thenall the people that they have, or will be inviting to theAction. When someone commits to attend the Actiontheir name is highlighted. Our goal is to have 425from MQ at the Nehemiah Action, make sure thatyour name is included and highlighted!

UPDATES ON THE ISSUESCrime: The city has a plan that they areimplementing. It is similar in some ways to theprogram we asked them for, but we are skeptical inthe ways that it differs. As I write this we are at 6murders so far this year, after a record 30 last year.We want a Lexington where everyone is safe in theirhomes and neighborhoods.

Drugs: We had an encouraging meeting with Dr.Humbaugh at the Health Dept! So far 1 million usedneedles have been traded in for clean needles. At lastyear’s Action we asked him to write grants to expandthe program and he has. A grant was received that hasallowed a van to be purchased for a mobile unit. Also,a coordinator for the program has been hired. Greatnews!

Education: On March 2 we had a 2 hourinformational meeting for teachers, administratorsand the community to learn about restorativepractices (RP) that we are asking the schools to adopt. An expert speaker from International Institute ofRestorative Practices (IIRP) and a teacher that usesthe practices from Jefferson County Public Schoolspresented and answered our questions. Then onMarch 3, with our IIRP expert and an administratorfrom Jefferson Co Public Schools who has beeninstrumental in implementing RP in JCPS, we hosteda 6 hr Stakeholder meeting for community leaders tolearn about Restorative Practices and how it works to

restore relationships instead of the traditionalpunitive style of discipline. One misconception is thatdiscipline goes away with RP, but actually takingresponsibility and restored relationships arefoundational to RP.

Mental Health: The mental health committee is stillmeeting with experts and learning about what isworking well and where the gaps are, narrowing thefocus to adults suffering with severe mental illness.

All Justice Ministry Network Members shouldattend the RALLY, Monday, March 23 at MQHR,7 PM! We will get updates on all the issues and heartestimonies from people living with these problems. We will report how many commitments we have toattend the Action. MQ’s goal is 425, the goal forBUILD is 2100! Say “yes” when invited, or give mea call if you don’t get an invitation, we want you thereto improve Lexington in these serious areas. (Kabby,285-9695, [email protected]).
