WEEKEND PRAYER @ HOME

each week fr. bill is streaming our weekend parish mass

online go to our Parish Website www.ivanhoecatholics.com

Introductory Reflection Today’s Gospel includes a number of so-called ‘hard sayings’ of Jesus. They identify the basic paradox of our Christian faith: it is only by emptying ourselves in imitation of Jesus that we can receive the full-ness of life which is his gift. There can be no real growth in the Spirit if self-interest prevails.

Introductory Rites + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord Jesus, you came to heal the wounds of sin and division: Lord, have mercy.

Christ Jesus, you came to help us see one another, not as strangers, but as sisters and brothers in God’s family: Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you help us make room in our hearts for the lost, the lone-ly and the outcast: Lord, have mer-cy.

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glo-ry, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Fa-ther, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer for this Week All-powerful God, your incarnate Word commands our obedience and offers us true life. Make our

ears attentive to the voice of your Son and our hearts generous in answering his call, that we may take up the cross with trust in his promises. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

1st Reading 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16

A reading from the second book of Kings

One day Elisha was passing through Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to have a meal. So whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for a meal. She said to her husband, "Look, I am sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God. Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a ta-ble, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us." One day when Elisha came there, he went up to the chamber and lay down there. He said to his servant Gehazi, "What then may be done for the woman?" Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old." Elisha said, "Call her." When the servant had called her, she stood at the door. Elisha said, "At this season, in due time, you shall embrace a son."

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord

I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord; through all ages my mouth will proclaim your truth. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever, that your truth is firmly es-tablished as the heavens. R.

Happy the people who acclaim such a king, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face, who find their joy every day in your name, who make your justice the source of their bliss. R.

For it is you, O Lord, who are the glory of their strength; it is by

your favour that our might is ex-alted: for our ruler is in the keep-ing of the Lord; our king in the keeping of the Holy One of Israel. R.

2nd Reading Romans 6:3-4, 8-11

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans

My brothers and sisters: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has do-minion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy people. Praise God who called you out of dark-ness and into his marvellous light. Alleluia!

The Gospel Matthew 10:37-42 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. + Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus called the twelve to him and sent them out with the following instructions: "Whoever loves fa-ther or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and who-ever does not take up the cross and follow is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

"Whoever welcomes you wel-

comes me, and whoever wel-comes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a right-eous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and who-ever gives even a cup of cold wa-ter to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple - truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward."

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection Spend some time in silent reflection and/or read the homily attached this newsletter.

Prayers of the Faithful Whether at home or in church, we remain honoured guests of God. As members of God’s household, let us pray with the confidence of children.

For Pope Francis and the whole college of bishops, that like the apostles Peter and Paul they will serve the people of God with deep humility and never cease to proclaim the gospel boldly. Lord hear us: R/ Lord, hear our prayer.

We give thanks for the ministry of Ruth Villani who has served this parish as its secretary for almost 16 years: May retirement bring opportunities for new horizons, re-creation and the grace of renew-al. Lord hear us: R/

For artists and performers, for work-ers in hospitality and tourism, and for all in unsupported industries, that fresh initiatives in the new fi-nancial year may ease their hard-ship. Lord hear us: R/

For our Prime Minister, State Prem-iers and their health advisors: may they continue to lead our nation with wisdom, compassion and cour-age through this time of crisis and may we and all Australians act re-sponsibly to protect the lives of oth-ers. Lord hear us: R/

For all who are suffering physical-ly, mentally or economically through this pandemic, especially

those in third world countries and those living under political leader-ship that is devoid of wisdom, un-derstanding, integrity or compas-sion. Lord hear us: R/

For healing mercies for the sick and those in need especially, Re-becca Bolden, Jillian Champness, Martin Stenhouse, Maree Nunan, Joseph Lau, Silvana De Iulio, Car-mel Garonzi, Margaret Canty and for all who are suffering from the coronavirus or whose lives are severely impacted by it. Lord hear us: R/

Holy God, you have called us out of darkness into your marvelous light. Help us reflect that light brightly to all around us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father…..

Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacra-ment. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my life today. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramental-ly at Mass, come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and remain with me forever. Amen.

Concluding Prayers Almighty and eternal God, our ref-uge in every danger, to whom we turn in our distress; in faith we pray look with compassion on the afflicted, grant eternal rest to the dead, comfort to mourners, heal-ing to the sick, peace to the dying, strength to healthcare workers, wisdom to our leaders and the courage to reach out to all in love, so that together we may give glory

to your holy name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the Lord be with us to protect us. May he guide us and give us strength. May he watch over us, keep us in his care, and + bless us with his peace. Amen.

Hail Mary, etc...

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, your Son, was made known by the message of an an-gel, may by his passion and + cross be brought to the glory of his resurrection, through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

28 June 2020 Homily for 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Bill Edebohls

Modern travellers, at least before Covid-19 closed down our travels, have become reliant on the easy availability of roadside cafes, service stations, motels, B & Bs, pubs and restaurants.

Back in Old Testament times, in the days of Elisha the prophet, there were no guest houses or fast-food stops. Those who travelled beyond the territory of their own family or tribe had to depend on the hospitality of strangers to survive. As we see from today’s first reading, Elisha is lucky in his travels: he meets a woman of means who invites him to break his journey and eat at her house. The hospitality must have been pretty good because Elisha makes a habit of stopping there on his travels.

In the tradition of ancient tribes who move from place to place to find new grazing lands for their cattle, hospitality from strangers becomes a matter of life and death. Their modern equivalent might be the migrant workers who leave home to find jobs in different areas and countries, international students currently stranded in Australia without support, asylum seekers seeking refuge and safety in a foreign land.

All these people depend on welcome if they are to thrive. In the sacred tradition of our own scriptures hospitality is regarded as one of the chief responsibilities of a caring people. The stranger, the outsider, the wayfarer, anyone outside home territory – all were regarded as people who needed welcome, special care and hospitality.

The reason for this was enshrined in Biblical Law: “If a stranger lives with you in your land, do not molest them. You must count them as one of your own and love them as yourself – for you were once strangers yourselves in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:33-34).

One of the important values of the tribe is the fact that its social security is the tribe itself: everyone can look to the tribe for help. But when the tribe becomes settled, people’s security moves away from the tribe to their own work and their own land. They can no longer look to the tribe because everyone is looking after his or her own property! Turning inward – becom-ing self-centred. By the time Jesus is born, the people of Israel have long settled into the land of Palestine. They are no longer nomadic; they are landed. And their values have changed.

As soon as Jesus is born Matthew portrays him in the Gospel as the one who is born into a place where he is not accepted: he has no security, and must be taken to Egypt for safety and shelter. At the beginning of his life Jesus is marked as the one who must depend on the hospi-tality of others. As an adult, Jesus learns that he cannot depend on the acceptance of his own family when he begins his ministry as a prophet. He takes to the road with his own band of itinerant supporters. As they leave their own region of Galilee behind them, they become a travelling people who have to depend on others’ hospitality to receive them and welcome their message.

When Jesus is welcomed into towns and villages by people who see him as a holy messenger from God, the people receive a holy prophet’s reward: the poor hear Good News, the sick are healed, sinners come to know the forgiveness of God. The people receive their own reward

Page 6: Mary Mother of the hurch atholic Parish · 2 days ago · MARY S HOOLS As a atholic ommunity we respect the Mary Immaculate Primary School Principal: Veronica Antrim resides, and

for the hospitality of a faith that welcomes Jesus. Their hospitality is not a matter of bed and breakfast and goodbye; it is the act of opening their heart to the visit of God who comes in the person of Jesus. Jesus’ presence rubs off on them: they catch something of his goodness and values; they are changed because of his visit.

When Jesus and his disciples face closed doors and closed hearts in other towns, all that the people receive is a cloud of dust.

In our spiritual tradition, we learn that Jesus often comes to us in the shape of a stranger, a foreigner, someone seeking refuge and hospitality.

If we refuse hospitality, if we close our hearts and minds to the wandering stranger, then we too can expect little but dust and ashes.

But if we see the face of Christ in the stranger, opening our hearts and minds, opening our arms in welcome, then we can also expect a prophet’s reward. We will sit at table with Christ, break bread together, share a glass of wine, hear the Good News and be changed forever – a glimpse into eternity – a glimpse into the life of God.
