4th Sunday of Lent March 31, 2019

Dear Sisters and Brothers, Our gospel today is the parable of the ‘Prodigal Son.’ In itself it is a beau ful parable but it has a very deep lesson for all of us. I’m sure we can find ourselves in some or all of the characters in this gospel passage. Are there mes we come across as the Pharisees and Scribes – judging the worthiness of others? Are we maybe like the indifferent, shallow, and thoughtless young man who believes he is ‘en tled,’ not sparing a thought about how his ac ons would hurt and affect others and his rela onship with them? What about the bi er brother? Has bi erness influenced my reac on to the plight of others or prevented me from forgiving others? Or what about the caring, forgiving Father? Can I honestly put my hand on my heart and say that I allow him to dwell and work through me? Over the last number of months there has been a lot of sadness in this country especially regarding the dignity of human life. New York legislators passed laws that basically stripped the child in the womb of all human rights, and New Jersey legislators have passed bills that will allow doctors to give terminally ill pa ents the means to end their lives. All that is needed now is for Governor Murphy to sign them into law. This is truly a very sad state of affairs, where human life is seen to be disposable or only as valuable as one’s usefulness. Many people are deeply hurt by what their legislators have done in their name and have cried out for public ac on. The Archbishop of New York was challenged on why he hasn’t looked to have Governor Cuomo excommunicated and all the other Catholic legislators for the laws they have passed. In light of the last number of months I believe our gospel today has a lot to say to us about how we should react and respond. There is the danger of becoming like the Pharisees and Scribes viewing them as dead to us – they are evil people beyond redemp on. Another danger is to become like the son who stayed at home with his father but spent all his me reminding himself why he hated his younger brother becoming a slave to his own hatred. We can spend our me ha ng to the point where we become slaves to hate and grow to despise not just some poli cians but all poli cians. Or, we could be like the ‘Father’ and become a person of hope that one day the ‘Prodigal Son’ will come back repentant and changed. So, do we just sit and do nothing and wait? No – if we are to be like the Father then we need to be parental, we need to help our legislators realize what they have done is wrong and reprehensible, we need to assure them of our prayers and of our compassion. The Pharisees and Scribes were judgmental and spiteful. The elder son was bi er and resen ul but the Father was loving and forgiving and the younger son felt safe to come back, not because of the fear of being judged or the fear of his brother’s bi erness but because of the Father’s love and forgiveness. Let us pray, pray, and keep praying for our legislators not just privately but as a parish family and as a family at home. Keep wri ng, emailing, twi ering, and phoning our legislators affirming them but le ng them know how disappointed you are. Some me we wonder if this really works but look to the other States that have changed laws that be er protect life. Christ Jesus said, ‘Nothing is impossible for God.’ May God bless you and keep you forever close to His heart. ~Fr Martin

This spring break I was lucky enough to go on a life-changing, rewarding trip! An amazing group of friends, fellow students, missionaries, priests, and I went on a mission trip to the Galápagos Islands (Santa Cruz Island) to serve one of the local parishes. This was the best experience and

decision I have ever made. It not only changed my outlook on life but also changed my entire relationship with my faith and brought me closer to God. I am so Blessed and cannot thank everyone enough for donating to help me go on this amazing journey! Nicole Perri

In today’s Gospel the prodigal son repents and finds mercy in the heart of his father. Know that your penance during Lent can give the poor the grace of finding the merciful heart of God the Father. For the first three months of this year, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 22 adults and 16 children remain in their homes and have heat and electricity through cold winter weather. In addition, one young working mother didn’t have to drop out of school, allowing her to receive her nursing degree this June.

Annual Chapter Baby Shower—Bins have been placed at the exits of both St. Mary’s and Holy Assumption to collect Baby Wipes, Diapers and Baby Formula for our Annual Chapter Baby Shower hosted at St. John the Baptist in Allentown. We will be collected throughout the Lenten season. The donations collected are to help First Way of Burlington County and other Pro-Life clinics in the area. In addition, if anyone was interested in attending the Baby Shower it will be Sunday, April 28th at 10am at St. John the Baptist. Tickets are $10 per person and includes a full buffet breakfast.
