THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love.

LA PRESENCIA DEL ESPÍRITU SANTO Hoy tenemos un episodio único en los Hechos de los Após-toles. ¡Un grupo de personas que llena una habitación es bautizado con el Espíritu Santo antes de que se bautizaran con agua! La palabra que se usa para describir el suceso: “el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre ellos” (Hechos 10:44), es característica de la forma en que el Espíritu obra en todo el libro de los Hechos: de manera poderosa y sorprendente. Aunque este “bautismo” no es la norma para describir el bau-tismo en el Nuevo Testamento, es sin embargo un buen re-cordatorio de que el Espíritu Santo no está controlado por si hemos vertido el agua o no, sino que nuestros signos sacra-mentales revelan al Espíritu presente y obrando entre noso-tros. Y tenemos un doble refuerzo de cómo esta obra se lle-va a cabo en la carta y el Evangelio que llevan el nombre de Juan. Es el amor, el auto sacrificio y el amor de entrega, que manifiestan al Espíritu de Jesús entre nosotros. El amor es el más grande de los mandamientos. El Espíritu se manifiesta también a través de los que viven en ese amor.

Today, Sunday May 13th, we celebrate "Mother's Day" and through the parish bulletin we want to greet and congratulate all the mothers of our parish of Mary Immaculate. In a special way we want to say "CONGRATULATIONS, DEAR MOTHERS!" on this day and may God bless you for everything wonderful and good that you bring to the family, the Church and society. We also want to thank you for giving us the "gift" of life, for having so deli-cately, affectionately and tenderly cared for us in your wombs. Thank you mothers, for all your dedication, sacrifice and love for your children. We can never repay our mothers everything they did, do and are doing for the children. We pray for them in a special prayer on this day, especially for mothers who have passed away so they are able to rest eternally in the peace of God. Finally, ask we want to ask for "FORGIVENESS" to our mothers for all the ingratitude and indifference that often as children we have with our mothers, sorry for all the times that we have not responded to the love and sacrifice of our moth-ers. Did You Know? What’s Your Plan in the Event of an Emergency? Did you know that every Catholic school in the Los Angeles Archdiocese is required to have a written plan for emergency procedures? The plan must include provisions for fire, earthquake, disaster and evacuation drills and lockdown procedures that conform to local, state and county requirements. Each school’s plan must be updated annually, and made available to parents. Does your own family have a similar plan for what to do and where to gather in the event of an emergency? City and County disaster preparedness agencies are a good resource to use for making your own emergency plan. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.
