“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.
Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his
bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a
community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know
their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its
confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life.”

her divine maternity and by her sufferings at the foot of the Cross in the Incarnation and Redemption, she has deserved to co-operate when they are continually applied to creatures by the Most High. “By the communion of sorrows and of will between Christ and Mary,” says Bld. Pius X, “she has deserved to become the dispenser of all blessings which Jesus acquired for us by His blood.” (Encyclical, February 2nd, 1904). Such is His will, but it is essential that she should constantly intercede for each one of us. This she always does, relying on the blood of Christ by whom she was herself saved and who alone saves us. This actual intervention of Mary plays a preponderating part in the salvation of the world.” —St. Andrew’s Missal, 1952 edition, Notes on the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mediatrix

OOOOn this last day of May we close out the month of special devotion to Our Lady mindful of all the graces Mary’s prayers have obtained for us.
The graces which the Holy Ghost pours down on us are due to the merits of Christ on Calvary; but in order that God may bestow them on the world it is necessary that Mary should intervene. Having co-operated by

ST. LUKE CHAPTER 19:41-48
AAAAfter the euphoria of Jesus' triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, the following two passages raise sobering realities that lead the reader into the anguish of Passion-tide. The first episode takes place while Jesus is still making His way toward the city precincts. The second
takes place in the Temple. In each case, Jesus laments and critiques the widespread unbelief and dysfunction amongst the people and the religious establishment of His day. Before we consider Jesus' words of judgment, however, we do well to note His sorrow. St. Luke relates the following to us in v. 41: "As He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it." God's wrath always springs from a place of deep sorrow at the sinfulness of man, and a profound sense of loss in the wake of sin's destructive consequences. God's unchanging nature is self-giving love, but this love is necessarily grieved and offended by human wickedness. Thus, while God is ever ready to forgive, and extremely long-suffering, He also justly punishes man from time to time for willful unbelief and wickedness. The combination of such sorrow and wrath are evident in Jesus' prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem in vv. 42-44: "If this day you only knew what makes for peace- but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides. They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
This prophecy was fulfilled in A.D. 70, when the Roman general Titus besieged Jerusalem, and
SCRIPTURE STUDY looted the Temple. Jesus sees this catastrophe as being linked directly with the populace's rejection of him: "you did not recognize the time of your visitation." There is a simple explanation for this link. Since the majority of the people failed to recognize Jesus as their Messiah, they were susceptible to the empty promises of false messiahs that arose in the years following Jesus' death and resurrection. These false messiahs were insurrectionists who stirred up the people and agitated Roman political authority, thus precipitating Rome's military assault. The next episode St. Luke relates for us in vv. 45-46 is Jesus' cleansing of the Temple. As the com-mentary in the Ignatius Study Bible notes, Jesus "pre-enacts" the destruction of Jerusalem in this scene. As He expels the Temple salesmen, He says, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.'" The Temple had its own currency, for which people had to exchange Roman currency at an unfair rate in order to buy their sacrificial animals. Jesus' wrath is directed at those selling at this unfair rate. There are parallels between this episode and the finding of Jesus in the Temple (cf. Luke 2:41-52). In calling the Temple "my house," Jesus identifies Himself with the Father, to whom He refers earlier as a Child, noting His need to be "in [His] Father's house." Additionally, as Mary and Joseph find the boy Jesus instructing the teachers, so here, St. Luke de-scribes Jesus "every day...teaching in the Temple area" (v. 47). For St. Luke, Jesus has divine authority to execute judgment, because He is the God to whom adoration at the Temple is due. Jesus is also the divine Teacher, upon whose words we should be "hanging" with attentive devotion (v. 48).

A MOTHER’S TESTIMONY:A MOTHER’S TESTIMONY:A MOTHER’S TESTIMONY:A MOTHER’S TESTIMONY: Mrs. Laura (Goguen) Keough wrote the following
testimony on her experience as the expectant mother of a Down’s Syndrome child :
“It most likely has down syndrome. I’m sorry. You have two options from here, to continue with the pregnancy or
terminate it.”
For about 17 weeks Winnie and I had been doing everything together. Errands, work, visiting family and friends, going to church, praying. I sang to her everyday. She danced around in my warm belly. We were so happy.
I had prayed and waited for her for so long and she was finally here. And now as I lay in the dark ultrasound
room, my husband and I joyfully watching her twist and turn on the monitor, I was being asked if I still wanted her. She may have a learning disability, they said. She may be sick. She may need surgery. And for that did I want her to be mutilated and thrown away? Was I on the scene of
a horror film? I shook my head and muttered “No.” Utterly confused as to why this was an appropriate
question to be asked. Three separate times we were asked the same thing. But I didn’t understand...Is not the best
place for a sick child in the loving embrace of their parents? And don’t parents want nothing more than to comfort their children and make them happy? Didn’t she deserve a chance at a long and beautiful life just like any
other baby? While I write this, my sweet Winifred is sleeping on my shoulder. I am so tired. My mind is tired. I wonder if there will ever be a time when I am no longer tired. But my soul, my soul is so alive. More alive than ever before. It’s pumping my blood, moving my muscles,
keeping me going. It’s full of joy, love, the grace of Our Lady, from one Mother to another. My life is just beginning and it already feels so perfectly complete. All because
of her. My dear daughter that God so graciously blessed me with. If only the other parents knew. If only the doctors knew. If only the
ultrasound technician knew...

SECRET Sanctify, we beseech Thee, O Lord our God, by the invocation of Thy holy name, the victim of this oblation, and by its means make us an eternal oblation to Thee. Through our Lord.
Preface of the Holy Trinity COMMUNION: Tobias 12:6 We bless the God of Heaven, and before all living we will praise Him; because He has shown His mercy to us.
