The start of this academic

year saw Tau Psi enter into a

new period where we have

set and met goals and made

intentional moves on our

brand and our cementing

our legacy here at the Uni-

conference, we made a very

intentional move to keep so

busy that we wouldn’t have

time to be lazy or compla-

cent.

Our goal was simple...make

a difference. We leaned on

one foundation and three

principles: Service with a

principle of serving our com-

munities, serving our cam-

selves. This is our year to

shine and absolutely noth-

doing so.

During our planning meet-

ing in June, we sat down

with the intent of develop-

ing programs that left some-

thing with attendees. We

wanted to extend our out-

reach by collaborating with

other organizations in efforts

to be more effective in our

mission.

We are excited about what

this academic year has af-

forded us and what we still

have left to come.

I want to reintroduce you all

establish this newsletter as

the premier organ for what

LIVING MY LIFE LIKE IT’S GOLDEN

Tau Psi started the Golden Girl Project in late 2008 as a means of identifying dynamic

young women who were doing positive things on campus, but hardly received recognition

for having class, dignity, and academic achievement in their desired fields of study.

The Golden Girls started out with 3 individuals, Sharnae Smith, Whitney Maxey, and

Kaneshela Cox, but expanded to include girlfriends of some of the brothers and other young

women who assisted us in our early stages of development. These women included Court-

ney Moore, Dominique Wilson, Mildred Lanier, Ashley Nichols, Brandi Campbell, and

Angel Fair.

Each woman exudes class and grace and many have moved on to pursue membership in

D9 Sororities and other organizations. Now the Golden Girls are few. Each year,

the chapter will select 7 women who dare to be different...women, who believe in

service, academic stability, and most importantly know the value in self worth and respect.

This issue, we pay homage to our Golden Girls who have parted ways and graduated from

this institution of College rank, as well as those still grinding it out to matriculate. We pay

homage to our very 1st Miss Black and Gold, Miss Leslea Robertson, who made history for

the Tau Psi Chapter and most importantly to our recent Queen, Miss Gabrielle Mary Lewis

who made it all the way to the Regional Pageant in Raleigh, NC. We pay homage to Whit-

ney Maxey and Sharnae Smith who have an undying love for the brothers of Alpha Phi Al-

pha.

Most importantly, we look forward to seeing the Golden Girls of tomorrow. Representing

class, sophistication, vision,

grace, and intellectual rapport. To us, the Golden Girls are the

total embodiment of what we

believe a good woman to be

and we the brothers of Alpha

Phi Alpha strongly believe that

quality over quantity is vital for

this initiative to live on. Should

you be so fortunate to be cho-

sen, expect to assist in per-

forming ser-vice projects with

the brothers and enjoying many

of the social activities afforded

to the brotherhood. I want to

take this moment to thank all

of our Golden Girls past and

present and say that without

your love, guidance, and sup-

port; I truly believe that we

would have been crippled in

our early years of development

as a chapter! We honor you

ladies and love you with all of

our hearts!

A Commitment to serve

This newsletter will follow a very different format

for us in that we will showcase a variety of events

and projects that have spanned since our last Dis-

trict Conference. We have compiled all of our Ser-

vice Projects and Events and included the many

accolades of various brothers in an effort to show

you the many faces of brothers that have crossed

through the gates of the University of Tennessee

at Martin. We hope that throughout this newslet-

ter, celebrate with us our many heights and jour-

ney with us as we show you undoubtedly that

the spirit of Alpha NEVER DIES.

“May the true spirit of the fraternity, rule our

hearts, guide our thoughts, and control our lives

so that we may become through thee...servants

of all.”

Amen

Although we are committed to service,

the thing that we genuinely enjoy

about Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is

the brotherhood. Every now and then,

we get together just to catch up.

On this particular day, Brother Joseph

Brandon was in town for the weekend,

so we quickly got up a group gathering

and went to a Mexican restaurant in

Memphis, Tennessee.

This event occurred on November 30,

2013 and in the photo you can find

brothers from Beta Xi, Tau Psi, and lines

represented are as follows:

Life : the year of me

Brotherhood lunch

Life: The Year of Me is the first book by Brother Anthony

Prewitt. He defines it as an anthology of thoughts, citing

that it’s a collection of thoughts, poetry, songs, essays, let-

ters, and narratives that chronicle his life from a very young

age to the present.

Life has something for everyone and is the realization of a

lifelong dream. It was a very painful, yet rewarding experi-

ence and I am excited to share with you my story. The

beautiful thing about this story...is that it’s one that is ongo-

ing. I came out of my past and came into my being so re-

newed in my strength and my purpose.

I am a firm believer that everyone has a story to

tell...sometimes you just have to find the right vehicle in

which to release it. If you would like to order the book, you

may find it online through www.amazon.com or if you

would like an autographed copy, you may purchase

through my paypal account ([email protected]).

It is my hope that there is something within these pages

that will be exactly what you need it to be. I thank you all

for your support and ask that you continue to keep me

lifted in prayer.

The price is $20.00 and if you have any questions, please

feel free to contact me via email or through social media.

A Belleville, Ill. native, Newson

was a two-time All-Ohio Valley

Conference performer – including

a spot on the OVC’s first team in

2005-06 when his 18.8 points per

game ranked second in the

league. Despite the fact that he

only played three years at UT

Martin, he left the program as the

third all-time leading scorer with

1,347 points. He still ranks in

eight UT Martin all-time top-10

career statistical categories, in-

cluding field goals made (452),

free throws made (378), rebounds

ber 25, 2014 and honors a brother

who has been a huge inspiration

to so many. Brother Newson has

played in the NBA D League and

worked his way up to go on and

play for the Dallas Mavericks. He

still continues to play profession-

ally oversees. Not only does he

serve on the court, but he still

finds time to give back.

He is living proof that hard work

pays off and dreams do come

true. Once again congrats on your

accomplishments and God Bless

my good brother!

SOME OF OUR SIGNATURE EVENTS

YEARS AGO WHEN WE NOTICED THAT

WE HAVE THE SAME PHILANTHROPHY

AND THAT WE BOTH WERE TRYING TO

PULL RESOURCES FROM THE SAME

TARGET AUDIENCE. WE THOUGHT

THAT IF MAYBE WE JUST COMBINED,

THEN NOT ONLY COULD WE DO

SOMETHING AMAZING, BUT WE

COULD BE MORE IMPACTFUL FINAN-

CIALLY WITH OUR DONATIONS.
