An adjustment disorder  occurs when an

individual is unable to adjust to or cope with

a particular stressor, like a major life event.

Since people with this disorder normally havesymptoms that depressed people do, such

as general loss of interest, feelings of

hopelessness and crying, this disorder isalso sometimes known as situational

depression.

Unlike major depression however, the

disorder is caused by an outside stressor

and generally resolves once the individual isable to adapt to the situation

RISK F CTORS

Various factors have been found to be moreassociated with a diagnosis of AD including:

Younger Age

More Identified Psychosocial And EnvironmentalProblems

Increased Suicidal Behaviour, More Likely To BeRated As Improved By The Time Of DischargeFrom Mental Healthcare

Less Frequent Previous Psychiatric History

Shorter Length Of Treatment

Those exposed to repeated trauma are at

greater risk, even if that trauma is in the

distant past. Age can be a factor due to

young children having fewer copingresources; however, children are also less

likely to assess the consequences of a

potential stressor.

M RRI GE DJUSTMENT PROBLEMS

There are a variety of contributing factors to

marital discord and issues adjusting to

marriage. Most couples continue to feel

happy and excited with the relationship for atleast six months after the wedding. Around

the six-month mark, however, many couples

begin to feel bored.

Ohio State University Extension notes that

"differences of opinion, financial obligations,

bad habits or boredom" can begin to

overwhelm even the most loving of couples

MAJOR CAUSES OF MARITAL MAL- ADJUSTMENT

Marriages end in separation or divorce

usually due to some sort of incompatibility

between the two partners.

Mismatched expectations of each other and

the relationship might lead to dissolution if

communication is poor.

Page 14: Marriage Adjustment Problems

Abuse whether it be self-inflicted or inflicted

on the other partner, is a leading cause of

divorce.

There is a debate as to whether money is a

cause of divorce or if it used as an excuse

that actually reflects some other source of

incompatibility.Disloyalty and sexual incompatibility is

another main cause of marriage break-ups.

C USES

Contributing factors to marital adjustmentproblems include :

The development of routine,

 Unrealistic expectations, Trust problems

Communication differences.

 Age differences Socio economic status

COMMUNIC TION

Poor or absent communication between

married couples might lead to divorce. If both

partners in the relationship are not clear

about their expectations prior to marriage, this might cause high degrees of tension and

disagreement.

Page 17: Marriage Adjustment Problems

Open communication during the marriage is

just as important. If changes in a partner's

career, financial, sexual and affection needs

are not voiced, these miscommunicationsmight make it difficult for the other partner to

meet any new or changed needs.

IMPORTANT TO LEARN

Minor disagreements can get worse if bothpartners do not take the time to state how

they feel and what their objectives are. The

inability to listen and compromise could also

lead to a break-up.

  BUSE

Physical, sexual or emotional abuse could

lead to divorce particularly if one of the

parties fears her personal safety is at risk.

When children are involved, the priority mightalso be to ensure their safety and well being.

Besides abuse that is imposed on one

partner, the misuse of drugs, alcohol or

financial resources creates enough tension

to result in the end of a committedrelationship. This is especially true if the

person who is abusing drugs or alcohol

begins to rise his destructive behavior andrefuses to seek counseling

DISLOY LTY

One of the leading causes of divorce is

adultery. When most partners enter a

marriage they expect to have their partners

remain monogamous. Despite a few

exceptions, the premise behind mostmarriages is that the commitment symbolizes

a desire to remain faithful to each other.

When one or more partners in therelationship go against the commitment of

marriage, it indicates a desire to no longer

remain faithful.

Page 22: Marriage Adjustment Problems

In most cases, this dissolves the idea and

trust behind the relationship. Each partner

may wish to move on and begin romantic

relationships with other people outside themarriage.

FIN NCES

Finances leads to a number of disagreementsbetween marriage partners. While money itselfmight not be the root cause of break-ups,incompatibility regarding lifestyles, spendinghabits and financial ambition typically lead toincreased amounts of tension. If one partnerdoes not see value in saving and prefers to live

beyond the couple's incomes, the other partnermight not be able to justify remaining in alifetime partnership.

Page 24: Marriage Adjustment Problems

Major differences in life ambitions could also

result in the dissolution of a marriage. For

example, if one partner desires a high-

powered career that brings in six figures andthe other is content with a lower middle class

lifestyle, it could result in an incompatibility

issue

Even if a couple has spent several years

dating, the exhaustion from planning and

executing a perfect and beautiful wedding

can be overwhelming. This fatigue can carryover into the first few months of the

relationship, making minute arguments and

disagreements seem pronounced and moredifficult to cope with

CONSIDER TIONS

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to overcomingmarital adjustment problems is to foster opencommunication. All problems, regardless of

their importance or size, should bethoroughly and honestly discussed. Becauseeach person learns to communicate in his orher own way, learning to communicate

positively and successfully with a spouse canbe a trying and difficult process.

SOLUTIONS

When addressed early, marriage adjustment

problems do not have to be major issues.

Marriage self-help books are a popular way

to solve minor marital disagreements and are

available for purchase at any major

bookstore.

Marriage conferences are also a popularchoice for couples who want to grow closer

while working through problems.

Marriage conferences enable couples to spend aweekend at a hotel or resort in a comfortableenvironment and listen to professional speakersdiscuss common marriage problems and offer simple

solutions.  Couples therapy or marital counseling is also a

beneficial way to solve problems by communicatingwith a trained professional in marital therapy.

The Mayo Clinic describes marriage counseling as away for couples to "recognize and resolve conflictsand improve their relationships."
