Inclusive Dates:

Scope & Content:

Consists of approximately 36.6 cubic feet of documents, photographs, and

blueprints related to the various building projects carried out by the Nashville

architectural firm of Marr and Holman. The collection contains five series, with

Series II representing the bulk of the material (see the "Organization/Arrangement

of Materials" section for more information about the individual series).

Among the documents are bills, reports, contracts, accounts, bids, estimate,

project specifications, estimates, booklets, sketches, blueprints, newspaper

clippings, building material samples, and incoming and outgoing correspondence.

While the majority of the outgoing correspondence originated with Joseph W.

Holman between 1911 and 1929, the greatest concentration of correspondence is

between the firm and the contractors and companies responsible for construction.

This correspondence dates from 1920 through 1924, but 1922 was the peak year.

Documents related to specific building projects exist in more than one series. For

example, material related to the construction of a science building at Middle

Tennessee State Teachers College [Middle Tennessee State University] is

available in Series IV and Series V. Other notable building projects represented in

the collection are various buildings for Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial

College [Tennessee State University], the Harry Nichol Building in Nashville, the

Nashville branch of the Federal Reserve, various buildings for the Tennessee

Home and Training School for Feeble Minded Persons [Clover Bottom],

buildings for the Tennessee School for the Deaf, various movie theaters for the

Crescent Amusement Company (which Marr and Holman owned stock in),

grocery stores and a warehouse for H. G. Hill Company, apartment buildings on

West End in Nashville (which Marr and Holman were mortgagers of), buildings

for the Union Ice Cream Company, and the United States Post Office in

Nashville.

In December 2019, archives staff discovered additional blueprints lying on top of

several map cabinets and buried under a stack of various other oversized

materials. The vast majority of these blueprints were of the U.S. Post Office in

Nashville, but there were also blueprints for other projects (an addition to the

Tennessee State Penitentiary, a women’s building at the prison, Cheatham County

Jail, East Nashville High School, etc.). Blueprints joined existing folders in the

map drawers where appropriate. However, many of the blueprints of the post

office were oversized, varying in width from approximately 2.5 to 3.5 feet and

varying in length from approximately 4 to 11 feet.

Administrative/Biographical History

"God closed my ears to the petty noises of the world

that I might better envision beautiful buildings."

Thomas S. Marr

Thomas Scott Marr Jr. was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 20, 1866, to

Thomas Scott Marr Sr. (1830-1897), a prominent Nashville banker and broker,

and Delia Tarbox Marr (1835-1907). At age three, a bout of scarlet fever caused

him to go deaf. He attended public schools before going to the Tennessee School

for the Deaf in Knoxville in 1877. After graduating in 1884, he matriculated at

Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University), the world's only college for the

deaf, in Washington, D.C. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in

1889.

Marr had become interested in the construction of buildings in Nashville at an

early age, so after his graduation he returned to Nashville and began work as a

draftsman in the office of Nashville architect George W. Thompson. Because

Marr only earned $2.50 per week as a draftsman, he realized that he needed more

architectural training. He therefore attended Boston's Massachusetts Institute of

Technology in 1891 to pursue special course work in architecture. He returned to

Nashville the next year and began work at the architectural firm of Thompson and

Gibel as a practicing architect, for which he was paid $12 per week.

In 1897, with capital of $500, he opened his own architectural business in the old

Chamber of Commerce building (also known as the Exchange Building) on 4th

Avenue North. He focused on designing residential buildings. At first, business

was limited, but it grew as Marr's reputation spread. Articles frequently appeared

in Nashville newspapers about the homes he was building in and around the city.

He also occasionally wrote articles about architecture and design for the Nashville

American newspaper.

During the summer of 1904, Marr hired Joseph W. Holman, then thirteen years

old, as an office boy for $3.50 per week ;his responsibilities included running

errands and cleaning the office. He later became Marr's most valuable assistant

and in 1910 they formed a partnership, known as Marr and Holman, Architects.

Holman was responsible for securing new business and dealing with clients, while

Marr supervised the drafting of the architectural designs.

With the addition of Holman and because of the increasing success of the

business, the main focus of the firm shifted from residential to industrial and

commercial design (although they continued to do residential design). Their

architectural designs included the use of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and

prefabricated materials. At the height of their business, from the 1920s through

the mid-1930s, Marr and Holman designed numerous buildings, including public

schools, hotels, courthouses, hospitals, apartment complexes, college buildings,

baseball stadiums, theatres, warehouses, garages, and business offices. Two of

their major accomplishments were the United States Post Office (completed in

1934) and the Tennessee Supreme Court Building (completed in 1937) in

Nashville. Marr also personally designed several buildings for his alma mater, the

Tennessee School for the Deaf.

As business grew during the 1920s, the firm hired additional draftsmen,

engineers, and stenographers. One of the engineers, James L. Howard, joined the

firm in 1928 as a structural engineer. His first assignment was as residential

engineer on the construction of the Russell Erskine Hotel in Huntsville, Alabama.

Marr hired another engineer, Richard S. Reynolds, in 1923. Reynolds was a civil

engineer and a graduate of Vanderbilt University. Much of the firm's success

depended on his ability to master all phases of engineering as it related to the

firm.

Marr died suddenly from a stroke on March 2, 1936. After Marr's death, Holman

continued to control the firm until his death in 1952. The firm was then

reorganized and Reynolds ran it until his retirement in 1970.

Organization/Arrangement of Materials

The collection is divided into five series. Series I contains office files and general

correspondence from 1911 through 1923. Series II holds documents related to

many of the firm's various building projects from 1920 to 1927. Series III

contains contracts and specifications for various building projects from 1920 to

1927. Series IV houses over 500 photographs of various building projects from

1921 through 1929. While there are blueprints scattered throughout Series I-III,

most of the blueprints in the collection may be found in Series V, which contains

over 700 blueprints of various building projects from approximately 1910 to

1965.

Series I-IV were processed in 1985 and were not reprocessed with the addition of

Series V in 2016. However, some of the container list descriptions in Series I-IV

were changed in order for the entries to be more accurate and consistent. But

while some container list entries may have changed, the folders themselves were

not reordered. Thus, the container list entries for Series I-IV do not appear in

entirely alphabetical order any more. For example, one item was alphabetized

under "P" for "Publishing House, Methodist" in Series III but was alphabetized

"M" for "Methodist Publishing House" in Series IV. Both entries are now listed as

"Methodist Publishing House." Similarly, Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial

College (now Tennessee State University) was listed three different ways: "A &

I," "Agricultural, Industrial & Normal School for Colored," and "A & I Normal

School." All of the entries were changed to "Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial

College." Other references to "colored" among the names of the various building

projects were left as is because that is what was used in the original documents.

Likewise, "theatre" is used instead of "theater" because that was how it was

spelled in all of the documents.
